How would you guys feel about a "Mystic Knight" type Job?

I only recently heard someone mention this job from past Final Fantasy games, and after looking into it a bit, it honestly sounds kind of cool!

It *definitely* parallels Red Mage in some ways -- being a fusion of Magic and Melee -- but where the Red Mage is essentially a full-time caster with a short melee-combo every now and then -- I feel like a Mystic Knight could still etch out kind of an interesting niche.

The Red Mage, to me, feels the closest thing to a true "Elementalist" sort of job, and I dig the French "Musketeer" vibe of the job! A Mystic Knight, meanwhile, seems like it could occupy a more Melee-oriented space, but still weave in a sort of "magic".

To distinguish it from Red Mage, I feel like thematically, I would have a Mystic Knight drawing on more "cosmic" powers, or even perhaps some kind of "Lunar magic". I could see landing on a Scimitar for their weapon, although part of me also kind of likes the idea of a sword-and-shield caster (low level Thaumaturges use Shields, after all). I think there's enough room for more than JUST Paladins to use Shields.

In the past, Mystic Knights in art have typically been represented with a sort of "Arabian" clothing design, which resembles the Dancer in some ways. I actually wouldn't mind that, but perhaps also add a bit of armor to the mix. Maybe not enough to look like a full-on *Tank*, but things like armored wristbands and anklets, or maybe a breastplate or shoulder-armor, maybe with intricate runes etched into it to convey more "magical" protection?

As for ROLE... well, I honestly wouldn't mind just going Melee-DPS with them. Thematically, they'd be using magic, and maybe have *some* ranged stuff (sort of a weird inverse of the Red Mage, I suppose), but I still lean towards that idea of a "Melee-caster". Maybe summoning star-showers for AoE damage, while imbuing their swords (and shields?) with magical abilities and effects.

Or maybe mix things up, and they're more a sort of "Melee-Healer", giving off an aura to heal those nearby (primarily tanks), albeit at a fairly trivial pace?

It seems like something that could be cool, to me! But what about you guys? It sound too similar to things we already have?

To add a different spin on Geomancer I had also suggested Geoknight (using those three characters I listed as inspiration). The weapon I had envisioned, before Gunbreaker, that they were two large shields that the job could use magically, but since gunbreaker had shifted it so they for that was actually floating pylons you could infuse with elemental power, but that is now (minus elemental infusion) represented by Sage- so maybe something different lol. Of course a huge mace (like Sauron) could be cool. Thoughts of Geomancer because rather than positional on the enemy you might have some sort of positional with your node pylons (emanating effects that you would take advantage of, using them like the Fenrir ice crystals, aoes, standing in one another or both for different effects, some movement / forgiveness skill just incase for certain boss sequences).

I'm too lazy to read the post, just looked at the title, but yes, we need dps spellblade. Real spellblade, RDM doesn't count.

I could see a giant mace/hammer being a cool weapon! Personally, if I was gonna go for a Geomancer tank, I'd probably have something like "gauntlets" that encase your fists in various types of stone. Easy enough to transmog, starting with rough-looking clay, to smoothed-stone with Allagan lights accenting it, to onyx with lava flowing though cracks in the gauntlets. Plenty of room to create, without overlapping with the Monk!

I could definitely see that being a cool mix to the usual "Tanks" we have right now.

An Arabian themed, heavy armor wearing, scimitar wielding, melee-centric mage is literally the blue mage from xi as well, which was also, funnily enough, the best iteration of blue mage ever imo

If you read one of the lore book (I can't remember which one), it basically says that samurai is the far east version of a spellsword (much like how ninja is the far easts BLM and Geo is far east CNJ with astro aspects). So we already have a "Spellsword" of sorts in the game, its just not the traditional sword buffing variety.

Well I didn't want to go on and on about it since you had mystic knight (besides its a fun idea in and of itself), as that job was title poster for the thread lol, but absolutely punching! I had thought these giant tower shields would hold elemental power (floating via magic), the job using them in tandem with their fists- so picture this huge armored mage punching an enemy with much larger bigger elemental infused / encrusted tower shields also hitting the enemy (magically floating). I just wanted to ensure there was a unique weapon and opportunity for strong visual presence. Like the two huge tower shields would lock on the back, then when GNB came out I changed the idea to pylons so the idea lived on as DD (again though Sage kind of used this now, so I'd probably think of something different if trying to re-pitch the whole package- but hey I did have a post on using orbs and other floating objects as a job weapon so... while there is no proof or guarantee I want to say I called it like 1-2 years in advance XD).

If you recall the FFXVI trailer where the character punches an enemy with their own fist and the fist of Titan- like that was what I was thinking with the bruiser mage (infused earth element, Geoknight punches enemy in the face with their bare fist and at the same time their huge floating pylon / tower shield of rock, punches the ground and the earth crumbles to enemy and erupts with fire, clenches fist and raises it to cause water to spew out, etc). I would really love for SE to dig into the 'bruiser' mage. Big bulky crunchy magic, not dainty and elegant, but big honkin tonkin truck to the face. Might also check out Asura Wrath for some inspiration of crunchy anger lol.

Not that I would be against another elegant mage, just think an absolute unit of a freight train focused design of magic would be neat. I think it would work well as a tank but honestly a heavy-armored DD might be a neat concept too, unless they do something to the loot tables it would only really be representable in AF armor though (though in a recent MrHappy interview they did mention they know the looting system can be an issue, so potentially they may rebalance how loot works and in that case you could technically have a tank armor wearing DD which could be quite wild. . . stat allocation would obviously need a unique weighting for this job but it's not a balance issue so long as it's not going to be a looting issue that causes tanks to riot lol).

Either way, tank, dd, mystic, rune, geo, lunar, I think bruiser mage would be a lovely job for the game.

I really dig that idea! And yeah, very different from a "Mystic Knight". You should start a thread, too! I'd definitely support that idea, especially since I love the idea of a "Tank" that literally relies on MAGIC, not the usual heavy armor!

The only job that I actively don't enjoy in some way is SMN so I'm down to try anything really.

Honestly, considering we're going to the Moon itself, and I just saw an image of those adorable "Loporrits", I feel like I could 100% see them helping instruct us on the way to learning this mysterious new "Lunar magic".

To me, it kind of all ties together beautifully, as the Scimitar is already the shape of a crescent moon, you could introduce more "space" abilities like Comet, Meteorain, maybe even a dash ability like "Shooting Stars", temporarily turning into a bunch of.... shooting stars, to rush a short distance while invulnerable. Primarily a damage role, but weaving a few melee abilities in with some spellcasting.

Something I feel would be kind of a cool niche, is maybe they give off a sort of "ambient energy" or "aura", only to allows in their IMMEDIATE vicinity (like melee-range), maybe passively increasing their base recovery or even increasing "healing/damage-over-time" spells, so instead of the usual melee where they're trying to stand behind or to the side of an enemy, they would be encouraged to stand right by the Tanks, but also needing to be more mindful of dodging abilities.

I mostly just like the idea of something a little more mobile, that isn't penalized for moving while "casting". Seems like it could be a fun change of pace!

I was hoping we'd see a sort of reverse red mage where your main source of power is using magic to buff your melee and you're encouraged to spend most of your time in melee range. Maybe even actually have a melee class that uses MP similar to how melee classes used to use TP. Heck, maybe even just make it a full on melee ranged caster that uses casting gear.

I love the archetype of a 'spellsword' class..but i'm not sure if such design is appropriate for FFXIV.
Once i played as spellsword in kingdom under fire 2...felt amazing
a mixture between AST and RDM would be interesting tho

I would enjoy the idea of a melee-DPS job that either focuses on weaponskills and have magic phases (the inverse of RDM if you will) or just a 50/50 mix of the two, perhaps even creating a combo system of weaponskills and spells. I'd be in favor of unique support abilities like a melee-range instant cast "spell" that heals the user on hit (for maybe say, 50% damage) and provides a shield to nearby party members equal to the same amount. Or, to add complexity to it, have the "spell" change its support effect depending on a buff provided by the last combo they performed. Maybe it provides a shield to the user and mitigation to nearby party members, etc. Something like that I feel could get really creative. Assuming you'd want the job to have some interesting support elements not currently employed by other jobs.

As for a weapon for the "knight" be it mystic, lunar, or otherwise, I think a shield bearing dps job would fit the mold of what our current dps roster is missing. Though, a spear and shield I think offers a more unique take on it.

Same. But I knew it is now impossible now that RDM is here. it would be too similar. My Hope is though that they would rework RDM to be more of a melee oriented mage towards a spellsword.

Yeah. I quite enjoy RDM at the moment but I'd rather see this sort of rework to the job as opposed to the bumbling sort of expansion that some other jobs have gotten in the past when they reach their theoretical cap. Outside of the unrewarding feeling AoE component, RDM is in a very good place right now so I'd rather see them do a complete reimagining of the job than just try to staple more things onto something that already works.

I really thought reaper was gonna be a mytic knight type job, fighting with curved blades. I think they choose Reaper though for marketing purposes. It will be a bigger draw than mystic knight, even though mystic knight would be really cool.

I think there *COULD* be enough distinction between Red Mage and Mystic Knight to warrant both. The Red Mage, as I see it, is a pure Elementalist, more so than any other job we've ever seen. For the Mystic Knight, like I said I would stick to the "Lunar/astral/space" themed magic to differentiate it, and being more Melee-centric (with some ranged utility; the complete inverse of the RDM), I could see it working.

Also, I am TOTALLY down for a Beastmaster job, particularly one dual-wielding axes! I'd lean heavily into "Barbarian" type vibes, with a mix of more savage-looking beasts to tame.

I can imagine Mystic knight as stance dancing mele-dps -- a class that relies mainly on its basic attacks, and a few GCDs, but it plays mainly like the Final Fantasy 5 itteration. A class that enchancts its blade with magic such as blizzard or Fire, and then attacks -- attacks being diffrent and having different effects depending on the spell enchanted with.

For exmaple, i can imagine the mystic knight enchanting his blade with Blizzaga, (With any enchantment he can strike an infinite number times before the enchantment wears off), however each consecutive strike with the same element places on the user a higher and higher penalty, when he striks an enemy with the Blizzaga enchanted blade it deals aoe damage and freezes all nearby enemies, but also debufs the user with a stacking 10% slow debuf. Whereas if he encanted his blade with Firaga instead then it would deal a large fire damage cone behind the target struck, and boost the users damage by 5% for 15 seconds (staking up to 3), but it would also have a 20% chance to infect the user with a stacking pyretic debuf.

Then they would be melee DDs whose rotating elements have the MP bar going up and down in a way that feels very familiar to BLM players. And more powerful, build-up-to-these imbuements like (Burst/Flare/Flood) Blade might be Spells or Weaponskills on their own, imbuing the weapon and performing a finishing strike in one action.

Funny; I've literally never heard the term "Minwu", but upon googling it, honestly yeah that's exactly the kind of aesthetic I imagine! Well, maybe a lightly-armored shoulder or pair of bracers or something, but definitely dig that.

I feel like having them use "Lunar magic" also lines up super well, both with Scimitars being crescent-shaped anyways, but also that the moon is probably much more important to desert-dwelling cultures (also, it could be a GREAT opportunity to give the Keepers of the Moon Miqo'te a meaningful presence in the game).

The problem with geomancer is that they already exist in the lore as a mix of CNJ and AST. It's kind of stuck there now. Even if we do see a similarly themed job someday it will probably be called something else (elementalist?)

I seriously don't think we'll ever get geomancer, but if they did decide to make a geomancer job some day, they could just do what they did with AST and say, "Yes you've seen an IshgardianEastern astrologiangeomancer before, but this is a Sharlayan[Sharlayan|Thavnairian|Whalaqee|SomeOtherCulture] astrologiangeomancer; it's a bit different".

I would love to see a Mystic Knight iteration in Final Fantasy XIV. Especially if they are inspired by FFV and FFIX spell-blade mechanics.

My concerns are how would they make enspells worth swapping especially in a game where elemental affinity have little to no effect. Sure they could go the BLM route of having spell elements have different bonuses like fire = damage and ice = MP recovery but that would make it too similar to BLM. Or they could have a build up mechanic by swapping enspells to build for a enholy or enflare but that would be way too similar to RDM. Also we have too many sword users this iteration should probably use something different like a great hammer.
