Tank Stances and WHY???

So I know that in ages past, tank stances (Grit, Defiance, etc.) were not actually acquired until after level 15 and therefore in some dungeons were unavailable. However, since Shadowbringers, all tank stances are now acquired at level 10.

Can someone, please, in the name of the twelve, tell me why it is that when you enter a duty now as a tank that is lower level than you currently are that the tank stance shuts off? Even with guildhests, there's literally zero duties that are available under the level at which you receive your tank stance.

PLEASE fix this. I find myself, maybe once a night, irritated at myself for having it on pre-duty then it being shut off once I get in.

Is this only me???

Because when your level gets synced down, all your buff abilities get deactivated - which happens to include your tank stance.
Probably easier to do it that way than having the game figure out which should be shut off, and which should have their effects reduced, and which would be fine to keep activated.

in stormblood tank stance remained active and shb just undid that QoL change. its not hard to implement because it has Literally been implemented before

How difficult it must be to press one button at the start of an Instance. /s

DNC has to target and then press Closed Partition, AST has to press a specific sect button, and they also need to press their Draw button, NIN needs set up Huton, DRG needs to press BotD before combat, MNK needs to get their Meditation stacks and Form Shift before combat, almost as if other jobs also have to press stuff at the start of a duty.

People complaining about requiring to use a couple brain cells at the start of a duty is just sad. Pressing buttons is not difficult.

I think he/she more means that old stances you only aquiered with level 30, so Sastasha and alike you not had it at all and it was changed due how aggro works was changed overall aswell, combos generating aggro, now only stance does purely.

Well, pretty much everything you have mentioned is DPS with the exception of AST. AST's sects aren't available at level 10. Tank role's responsibility is a little more than just "hit harder" and without the tank stance being on, it is quite possible to get a party member killed easily. Regardless of that, though, tank stances are all available at 10. Meaning there's no reason to turn them off. Downsyncing and disabling abilities that aren't available at the level to which you're downsync'd is one thing. Disabling an essential role action that is never not available for group content is, honestly, silly.

I'm pretty sure that was never a thing. Here's a video of a Paladin queueing for Shisui with Shield Oath active, and it's deactivated when he gets into the dungeon because he's level synced.

If you synced down, all buffs we removed including tank stance, ast sect, monk fist stance etc, there was no exception in Stormblood that's why players would often have to reapply stuff on entry. Should be second nature to check stances and stuff though when going in to duties, little personal responsibility.

I could've sworn it was an issue at one point, way back in ARR maybe? I remember hearing stories about WARs who had Defiance giving them a bunch of HP, getting synced down for stuff like FATEs, and keeping the bonus HP despite the lower level which made them hilariously bulky. I can't actually find a source confirming it though, and I'm just going off what I heard in the past.

My point was, it doesn't matter what level you get sync'd down to, other jobs outside the tank role will get affected by it too, in one way or another, it's not a tank only thing to deal with.

In all honesty, this to me, sounds like a, "I'm bad at the game, please hold my hand some more, because I might forget to press one button." It really doesn't take much thought process to put your stance on when you get sync'd down, and usually becomes a habit over time. Besides, what's the actual worst thing that's gonna happen, your group is gonna wipe, big whoopdie do, s*** happens, back to the start you go and you'll remember it next time.

I swear some people make it sound like life and death, it's only a game.

Whether accurate or not, it does stand as an example of why buffs need removed on level sync. Can't have a snapshot of a buff at level 80 in a level 20 dungeon.

I think you like to be argumentative. Have played the game for many years and I think it's silly that you're trying to say I'm bad at it because there's something that could be done that makes no sense not to do. You get sync'd down and lose access to abilities that aren't available at the level to which you're sync'd. Tank stances are never not available for group content. That's my point. It's far from game breaking and it's not a "life or death" thing, it's irritating that it's disabling an ability that shouldn't be disabled.

Maybe I'm only complaining about it in a tank sense because I don't do other roles often enough to see other things drop off.

Except in this case, the buff is literally only enmity generation. There's no extra health, no extra defense, no penalty to damage. Yes I generate extra enmity or no I don't - but I see your point.

I mean that is one of the points of forums is it not, raise points as to counter an OP post, that way it does not become an all too common thing of an echo chamber.
I do find this thread pointless and complaining about a non issue just for the sake of complaining. Especially when it's an issues resolved simply by pressing your stance button after you get sync'd down.

Then, may I ask, why you're bothering replying? It's fine to raise objections, I don't have issue with that, but calling me lazy or bad because I think it's something small that could be easily fixed isn't exactly an objection, it's just insulting. Sure, it's quite simple, over the years, the games reliance on player awareness has eroded away to the point where, that hand holding is rife throughout the game, and becomes too easy.

Asking SE, to make an adjustment because you forget to press one button is another example of, "SE can you please fix this even though, as a player I can fix it myself quite easily."

Pretty much I have the belief that more agency should be placed in the player rather than asking for SE to fix every minor to non issue "problem", that can be resolved through player awareness. That way devs can actually fix real problems.

To the player, this sounds simple. "Extra" or "no extra." But the game still has to run the numbers, and the snapshot buff may provide a different value/multiplier than what is applied while synced.

You may think it doesn't matter. But consider 8-mans. Consider an off-tank that may have this snapshot potentially-higher generation, with a main tank that simply cannot stay ahead.

Not saying this is definitely what's happening. But, never know when they're something under the hood running unseen.

I hate that Iron Will/Defiance get automatically turned off. Granted, it's not a problem to turn it back on, but if you just wanna rush through a leveling DGN you can sometimes forget it. Then again, someone will probably remind you during or after the first pull.

That's really my point, exactly. It's not a matter of laziness or being a bad player and it's not HARD to turn it on - I have it hotkeyes for that reason - it's just that sometimes it's easy to forget. And yes, lol, often will get reminders on that first pull.

This is something I hadn't considered and as such is a pretty good, constructive criticism with food for thought. I appreciate it.

The reason we still have tank stance is due to the fact that they want to make content that requires more than one tank. It's the easiest way to handle enmity. Binary solution. Either you're getting the aggro modifier or you aren't. If tanks just generated enmity naturally, while we do have tools to make sure one is more consistently MT, it would lead to problems with tank swap mechanics.

It's really not a problem, and it's not too much to ask of you as a player. Before this you had to also pay attention to and use the skills that had enmity modifiers on them several times to build sufficient enmity. If you could do that, with this same "problem" still existing(whoever said it was taken out in Stormblood has misremembered), then you can surely handle this much easier system. If you want to completely delete the responsibility of tanks, then you might as well delete tank.

As others have said, it's simply following the programming rules of all job based buffs. They are wiped on sync. Just accept this small responsibility. It's the least they've ever asked of tanks.

Well, I've been tanking in the game for years and even today there are abilities that generate more enmity than others. I know why we have tank stance - not asking for it to be removed. You've also missed the argument I made where, unlike other job-based buffs that are acquired at a time past when group content starts (level 10 with guildhests), all tanks - even those who start at 30 (DRK) or 60 (GNB) - have their tank stance available at level 10 - so again at the time when group content and party/duty finders become available.

The reason I feel it's an issue NOW where it wasn't before when it happened is because prior to Shadowbringers, tank stances weren't acquired at level 10. Going into Sastasha or Tam-Tara without tank stances happened because they didn't exist until later on. You didn't have them then, so it made sense then to disable them on a downsync when you got those dungeons. Like other abilities, it wasn't available so you couldn't use it.

I didn't ever claim this was game breaking or a deal breaker for me, it's an annoyance that I thought - prior to reading Hasrat's comments - could be simply solved. It is quite possible that it's a question of multiplier or percentage in which case going into Sastasha when sync'd down from 80 with Grit on would mean I'd have the whole place aggro'd on me from the start and wouldn't have to even attack. I concede that point.

Otherwise, if it's a simple matter of "extra enmity" or "no extra enmity" then I don't see the point of having it disable when it's literally available from the start of group content onward.

I really wish people wouldn't assume I'm just being lazy or that I feel it's too much to ask of me. I'm not. I also know I'm not the only person who has issues with this. But I'll use your argument against you, too - if you're using an MT/OT then have the OT be responsible for turning their tank stance off. Just accept that small responsibility. It's the least that could be asked of you.

The reason for it is likely the way level sync is coded to make sure no one can go in with buffs already active. Even though tank stance only gives enmity generation (now anyway), it is still considered a buff and therefore part of this coding that makes it get turned off. Considering this affects all buffs, I do not think SE is going to go out of there way to make it so it doesn't affect tank stance.


Yes its annoying and yes it sucks when you get sync'd down and forget to turn it back on but that unfortunately is just how its coded so we don't have issues with buff bugs going in to lower level content

Because all BLU actions are level 1, they don't have restrictions like all the other jobs. Once you obtain a BLU spell it's available regardless of sync (obviously you need to set it first).

Except all tank stances are available prior to there being Duty Finder/Party Finder availability. The first time there's any sort of group-required content is level 10. All tank stances are available at level 10. There's no case where you will get into a duty that is below the required level for a tank stance.

If you are lvl 10 when you enter a duty which is lvl 10, you do not lose the stance if you have it on before you entered the duty. BLU is an exception to everything. They're a limited class to be played on their own or with groups of themselves. They can't queue for dungeons like normal classes can or else they may be sync'd, too, so it's not a perfect comparison. I was speaking, also, specifically of group content. FATEs, even below level 10, can be solo content, but I hadn't also considered FATEs, so that's a good point. Not a perfect argument, like the BLU comparison, but decent.

I know the when of it happening, I just don't understand the why of it for group content. It did make sense when the abilities weren't available for some of the lower content, but once that was changed, I feel like them being deactivated is an oversight and not intentional.

I'm not the only tank who takes issue with this, either. It's confusing as to the why of it. Hasrat's speculation has been the best defense of it I've seen so far and has given me another possible angle from which to view the deactivation, but it still - to me and a few others I know, not to mention how many I don't know - is a minor irritation that feels like it could be easily remedied.

BLU is able to enter duties and maintain Aetherial Mimicry. So I see mo reason why they can't program the same function for just four other abilities.

I'm fine with having Grit or Iron Will able to be toggled, but when I sync down, it shouldn't turn off because, so far as I'm aware, the reason abilities are disabled when you downsync is that they require a level higher than what you are sync'd to.

In the case of tank stances and the duty/party finders, there isn't a single instance of group content - nowadays, that is - that is below the level at which you receive your tank stance. Ergo, I believe it's unnecessary for it to automatically disable when you are sync'd down in level since there is no point where it would be unavailable to a group.

The sense I get off of it is that when they made the decision to give all tank roles their tank stances at 10 - because they weren't all available at 10 at first - they simply didn't consider/forgot that it wouldn't need to be deactivated. I've seen it as an oversight and not intentional. I could be wrong, I probably am, but that's just how it comes across to me.

They didn't create a new sync mechanism specifically for each place that you could possibly sync, they made one that does everything that it needs to do; removes all of your buffs that aren't level 1 buffs, syncs your item levels, syncs your level.

"Why not" is generally anytime you change code, you create bugs, especially within intertwined functions. From a risk/reward standpoint, it's not worth creating and maintaining 2 separate sets of code that generally do the same thing just so that 1 person in DF doesn't have to hit 1 button while the party loads in/watches a cutscene. Sure, it's annoying, but I would say that it's not worth the dev time to fix.

SE has patched things on the fly that have done pretty simple tasks, from our viewpoint, but I imagine needed lines of code. Like keeping Wanderers out of the Firmament on worlds not their own so they can't take up space for the FATEs. While admittedly this is a much more widespread issue than my tank debate here, they did it. I would imagine it also took a lot more coding to do that than it would to stop tank stances from being deactivated.
