The combat was slower but more strategic. It felt like a game of chess on a live battle field.
I would really like to see this form of combat return. It reminded me of Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door.

No you don't. You just think you do. Trust me.
No, you do not miss 1.0. You might miss FFXI's gameplay style, I do too, but FFXIV 1.0 was not that.
i miss the graphic fidelity of 1.0
The combat in this game is pretty watered down.
And it gets worse as we go with jobs starting to homogenize.
Core system makes it like this and it won't return sadly. It'll need to have a rehaul.
Nowadays players are more fond of fast paced combat. If anything a lot of people have complaints about our 2.5 second GCD and want it reduced to a 1.5 second GCD.

Are you wearing the pince-nez?
Wha- no, 1.0 was nothing like TTYD. Where the heck did you get that notion?
I do think 1.0's combat system had some potential, but it was not really more strategic and it certainly wasn't engaging. Even if it had been properly tuned where Feint wasn't the best thing in the game and you miss chance was under 70%, I still don't think 1.0's style would be better than what we have now. And this is coming from someone who really loves FFXI Classic's slow-as-hell combat.
Today's PCs could handle it a lot better than the systems that were available then.
Before I upgraded my graphics card, I could only get 1.0 to look like this:

Legacy mark here. Thank goodness 1.0 is gone forever.
What I miss about 1.0 is the slower pace gameplay, the need to plan ahead before you travel to another city. How world monster were actually a threat even at Lv.50. How gear dammage actually discouraging you from dying.
What I don't miss is the laggy menu. The high level monsters that blocked my path to Mor Dhona. The market place that was a nightmare to find what you need, you litterally wading through hundreds of retainers, and lastly the one thing that made me quit the game....Ifrit AOE lag.
Tried to get back into it after hearing about the Legacy campaign but I had really bad internet back then so I missed out....
Legacy here, and I miss aspects of 1.0. I know that I look back fondly on it, kinda in the same way I look back fondly on FFXI... But I know that if I had to play it again I wouldn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. (And I say that as someone that has tried to go back to present-day ffxi a few times...)
Because they want this game to have low-end specs to allow for a wider swatch of players, and that level of texture fidelity is /way/ too intensive for no pay off. They literally went over this at the last Japanese Fanfest when the asset team got to have a panel and they explained why the original version of the Crystarium that was teased before 1.0 dropped was illogical. (And for exactly the reason I listed. They literally made highly detailed light bulbs /WITH/ animated filaments in them that no one could see - to give you an idea of how extra they were about all the small details.) At some point graphical fidelity for the sake of graphical fidelity is a case of diminishing returns in MMOs.
Edit: Found the fanfest screenshot thread on reddit. Scroll down a ways and it's summarized.
People complain about not being able to play XIV on their PCs NOW. We don't need 1.0 back... it failed for a number of reasons. Hell the combat in THIS game is seen by many to be too slow.
The videos I've seen of 1.0 is the casters cast Fire or something once every 5-10 seconds, melee seem to be autoattacking, and everyone not melee were stacked on top of each other and hardly moved. Oh and occasionally they sent a ranged up some stairs to kill a meteor once in a while, but that was for the final boss.
That's not strategic. That's boring. That's and I quote the president of SE: Boring enough to damage the entire final fantasy franchise.
I feel the opposite, but I also love bigger zones even if there's some copy > paste terrain. I would have preferred this over smaller, more detailed zones. But we got the latter, and then expanded zone sizes from HW onward. So I guess that's fine. Shadowbringers is honestly the only expansion where I feel they tried to push the envelope though. Bigger zones and a good bit more detail.
I miss a lot of 1.0.
The graphics, the animations, the gear sets having FFXI like bonuses.
Sadly it was all thrown away to make the game run on weaker hardware and have a straight vertical progression.
This reminds me when Yoshi-P first started working on the 1.0 game. He took the beetles and rats and just blew them up in scale. Could tell back then I wasn't going to like a lot of the changes coming.
"I miss classic wow and want it back"
"Good news guys we're bringing classic wow back!"
"Oh.. well, life's crazy, I guess, oh shucks oh well" And never touches classic wow.
Same energy.
The main thing Classic WoW has going for it is that it isn't modern WoW. That's a pretty low bar, however. Same energy, the difference is that FF XIV 1.0 was awful enough that it had to be shut down and it will probably never see the light of day again. Meanwhile FF XIV in its current form is actually successful.
Oh wow. Someone else that thought 1.0s combat system had potential. I never really ran into an accuracy issue unless I was out of my weapons sweet spot. Many didn't realize all weapons had sweet spots, even though the games webpage at the time showed it to them. The stamina cost to most actions also helped differentiate sustained vs burst classes.
if not that then what about an hd texture pack? or higher quality meshes? textures and meshes that don't look like they were drawn on with crayon?

NIGHTMARE!
No OP you dont miss 1.0.
You're just saying that because you're not happy with current changes to the game.
1.0 got scrapped because it was trash.
A bit hyperbolic.
Casting a large powerful spell every 15 seconds makes sense. The 1.0 ending cinematic had the BLM focusing his magic. I’d love to have that fantasy.
It would also be amazing for PvP. Set up a 15 second cc chain with sleep and flare IV for 90% of hp.
I miss every race having different death animations.

At least the current version is actually playable on the lowest settings.
Oh you want fun and engaging old PvP with tons of impossible to get out of CC? I gotchu fam say no more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4mNWbkfjf4.
You never know because the same director was working on it and lets say that it worked out you'd never know what it would have turned into today if it had succeeded.
I miss 1.0 because of the music battle music sounded like battle music, large area's, boat rides, all the cool stuff and a different feel to the world with battleships in the sky.
it is what it is and never came to and we got FFXIV reborn into something else I cannot argue but I do miss some stuff from 1.0.
