Dark Knight Feedback on ONLY Dark Mind

I only want one thing. I think if Dark Mind was kept 30% then it would be "ok" but it being reduced to 20% should have it be all damage. The reason I believe this is because of its usage compared to the other special cd mitigations. Square has been seeming like they want to make dark knight the "magic tank" however that identity has already been lost based on info from the media tour. The reasoning behind them wanting dark knight to be the magic tank is no longer valid since Warrior has cooldowns that are for both magic and physical. So warrior having that basically negates dark knights "identity" as warrior will still be able to mitigate all types of damage (including magical) and it has more available to them. Not only that but paladin now having automatic blocks with sheltron which also works on magic damage. I feel that if that was adjusted and that alone it would be extremely fine. While the info from the media tour is subject to change I do hope that this is seen and possibly changed because I feel it would be fair since dark knight would have the only cooldown that is damage type specific when the others have all damage. If dark mind was to be still magical then it should be 30% and Raw Intuition for warrior should be just physical.

Funny how PLD is the one that actually took the Magic Damage specialty from DRK, but of course no mention of that here. Apparently Warriors stole it, I must've missed them telling us that now all War CDs mitigate magic damage :confused:

Dark Mind nerf is rather inconsequential. You now get 20% off the top from stance trait and a stronger TBN to use with it. All in all you'll actually be mitigating more than you were before.

And the "others" do not have All Damage. Only PLD and WAR. Besides, changing it to 30% doesn't do anything to help against physical attacks. Which is really the only reason why you are upset. SE decided to give GNB and DRK cooldowns that were only half as effective as WAR and PLDs.

But who knows why.

And you can change Raw to Physical-only when TBN is changed to Magical-only. How about that?

You apparently cant read but thats ok. I did in fact mention sheltron. Also Im pretty sure that they are going to scale damage to include the 20% mitigation trait. So it will be inconsequential. The problem with what you said about tbn is that tbn is a punishing skill (which thats fine I dont mind that). And all tanks do have skill that do flat damage. PLD and WAR have Sheltron and Raw respectively. Gunbreaker has Camo which yes has the parry thing but it also has 10% flat damage mitigation. That already makes it more usable than dark mind. So the issue I have is the fact that the "magic only" of dark mind is not as usable as the other special cooldowns and especially if reduced to 20%. Dark Mind can basically only be used on magic autos or magic tank busters. But raw and sheltron can be used for both types of autos (magic and physical) and both types of busters (magic and physical). So the usage of that becomes very limited while the usage of those other skills become very flexible. Not to mention that the frequency of usage with Raw being 25 sec cooldown with no cost in usage. Sheltron does have a cost but paladins will have it very frequently with how fast gauge is generated.

If all of this goes too far over your head then thats fine. Just move along then ^_^

Also keeping Raw physical and dark mind magical would be fine. Its clear you dont know how all these skills work but that is ok as well.

Dark Mind doesn't correspond to Raw int. Raw Int is meant to be Warrior's equivalent of TBN, Sheltron, and Heart of Stone (compare durations, amount mitigated, cd).
By the way, TBN is better than Raw Int in basically every way you could compare them given the lower cd and the way it stacks with % mitigation as a shield, unless you manage to take damage equal to 1.5x your health bar in 6 seconds, in which case the % mitigation overtakes the amount blocked by your % health shield.

What Dark Mind corresponds to in the other kits are the "odd" cooldowns. Camouflage, Thrill, Passage of Arms. In that context, Dark Mind is perfectly fine. Thrill can block both types of damage but has a longer CD, Camo is good for autos but ineffective for tankbusters (would amount to about 7 or 8% mitigation) and has a longer CD as well, Passage can block both and even protect your party but doesn't work with Sheltron and renders you unable to attack for the duration. Dark Mind has a low cooldown and high amount of mitigation but pays for it by being unable to block physical damage. These cds are meant to give certain tanks edges in certain fights. On an auto heavy fight, you might consider Camo to be the best. On a magic heavy fight, DRK. On a fight where raid damage is high, PLD. And so on.

Even in magic heavy fights, it still wouldnt matter as much when other tanks have more frequent cooldown usage that do the same thing as dark mind but available more frequently and can be used for all damage.

And its not a high amount of mitigation if its restricted to just one type of damage. I agree with Camoflauge though.

Dark mind 20 % all damage reduction or bump it to 30% if it just applies to magic only. Magic tank is dead. Every class takes damage as well as DRK. So buff it to give DRK the advantage or stop treating DRK like a magic tank and make it a flat 20 % damage reduction. Throw in a reflect damage there for good measure.

If you want to call DRK a magic tank bc it manipulates mp as a resource management tank then fine. But magic only CDs are total bs. Don't give war physical only dange reduction CDs and don't give DRK magic only reduction CDs.

What more frequent CD usage?

Rampart and Sentinel-wannabes (Dark Wall, Vengance, etc) all have literally the same CD.
And TBN has *half* the cooldown of its competitors except intervention which needs you to eat one of your real CDs to even matter on top of the gauge cost. And don't forget that the effect is just better too in general, as shields don't lose effectiveness stacked with other % mitigations, especially compared to the complete garbage that is nascent flash unless the heal is somehow gigantic because as it is, it's going to be a measly 7 or 8% with a crappy delayed heal that's probably just gonna result in overheal because the healers already blew their instants before it wore off.

Being restricted to one damage type isn't going to cripple it. Need you be reminded of HW DRK, where Dark Mind was insanely strong? Even in SB you could find great uses for it in almost every fight, including the ultimates. Again, you can't compare it to raw int or sentinel or vengance or something, that's not the "role" it plays in DRK's kit, that's TBN/Dark Wall's job. Compare it to camo, PoA or Thrill and you realize it's really not that far behind them, even better than than some I'd say given that it has the lowest cd of the bunch. They're meant to fluctuate in usefulness depending on the fight because each adds a bit of unique identity to the jobs (Thrill enforces the BIG HP TANK of War, the protection of others at the cost of yourself for PLD, the anti-magic for DRK. Camo is boring though - no identity there.)

Add MP restore to it when taking magic damage.

Dark Knight is still the magic tank. Its attacks will still be spells and Dark Mind still mitigates magic. Dark Mind has always been inferior to other cooldowns which can mitigate both, but fortunately most bosses you'd need it for deal magic damage and some mob packs spam magic casts.

Sheltron should always have blocked magic because the Heavensward trailer depicted the Warrior of Light blocking fire (a type of magic damage) with their shield, proving it is realistic to block magic with shields in FFXIV lore. For whatever reason, blocking was not actually adjusted to be able to do that in Heavensward.

Paladin has always had an element of casting spells simply because it used to cast Cure, Stoneskin and Protect in ARR. In HW it got its own versions of these in Clemency and Divine Veil and evolved from there.

I don't think any of the tanks will have a problem with Rampart, their 30% and their Sheltron/TBN/Inner Beast/Heart of Stone, so it's better to view Dark Mind and Camouflage as bonus cooldowns.

Man.. Remember the days when DRK had both a magic and physical CD to use. Good ol' nostalgia

They should have added Sole Survivor effect on it so at the end of the duration it gives 1000 mp and 10% of your health back. Otherwise it will be one of those useless skills.

There has to be a considerable amount of magic damage in this expansion for it to be considered useful. Otherwise it is just adding to the skill bloat.

Dark Mind sadly is a one trick pony.

I have no doubt that it will be a powerfull mitigation tool in savage raids. They always add enough magic tankbusters to cater to this skill.

But outside of savage this skill is pretty much useless.


I would say add Dark Dance / Anticipation into the skill, make it more like a copy of Camouflage.

20 seconds duration, 60 seconds cooldown, 20% magic mitigation, 20% parry buff.

the longer duration is useless regarding the magic damage mitigation, since magic fluff damage happens rarely, and a 60 seconds recast for a 20% parry buff is what Anticipation already has. And remember, it used to be a DRK skill anyway.

This will make the skill more usefull outside of savage and gives DRK a fluff mitigation tool.

Camouflage and Thrill of Battle have more than one effect too, these skills also are both usefull against busters AND fluff damage (okay, they are not that good against busters, but at least they are working on all of them).

I would also be okay with an unchanged Dark Mind, when Dark Dance is added back into the game as an additional cooldown, when a parry buff on Dark Mind is out of question because of the name and lore or whatever. Let them share their recast-timer, I don't mind. I mean it's button bloat, but I would be okay with it :O


Oh and SE, when you keep this physiscal / magical damage stuff, please add a visual indicator for magic busters, like a castbar in a different color, thanks.

Although I agree with some who are saying it is a "bonus cooldown," and in some ways homogenization is a slippery slope, but really the amount of identity gained versus the actual mitigation lost (when compared to other tank CDs) just isnt a good ratio. I know magic mitigation has some place but seriously when you stack up all the tank CDs right now (shoutout to Xeno for his work here) DRK is the only one with this special type of damage mitigation and it feels bad. Flat 20% damage is not going to break the game or ruin the identity imo.

Well here's the thing, consider that each of the other "bonus cooldowns" have their own downsides:
1. Thrill - At first glance, clearly the strongest of the bunch when used selfishly. But the fact that it's needed to enhance the normally-weakest Shake it Off means that it can't exclusively be used selfishly, on top of its higher cd.
2. Passage of Arms - In a vacuum as an overall defensive effect, it seems to be the greatest, adding a second raid damage mitigation ability as well as serving as personal damage mitigation by guaranteeing blocks. However, the clunkiness of usage as well as being unable to attack for the duration means effective usage is going to come at a price of multiple GCDs for the PLD. It also has the highest CD.
3. Camoflauge - A great skill for taking autos, but the worst of the bunch at taking tankbusters as it's unreliable, and also has a higher cd equal to thrill's.

Really, in terms of balance, the greater worry is the fact that Holmgang is still the best invul skill. But that's something that the other 3 tanks all have to suffer on.

Here's the thing most of you guys are NOT factoring in: How a permanent 20% in mitigation from tank stance mastery is going to mess with ALL damage reduction CDs. We're in a game where this causes diminishing returns. That said, a 20% CD is more like 16%. Maybe it's not being factored in discussion to keep things constant, after all, this also means that sentinel clones are effectively only 24% mitigation as opposed to 30%.

That said, the gap between the power of different CDs is closer than before. Because of this, CDs that increase our HP by a certain amount are EVEN MORE crucial than ever before. The fact that we are getting an on-demand shield that provides 25% of our max HP, with a 15 second cooldown, that alone should tell you our capability to receive magical tank busters is better than before.

But even then, even if you're trying to ignore our passive 20% damage reduction, then you're mistakenly looking at Dark Mind with the DRK in a vacuum. However, that won't be the case. Every tank buster we receive is practically guaranteed to have the aid of our co-tank, no matter what job that co-tank is. Even if we assume a piddly 10% from nascent glint, we're getting 28% in Damage reduction. "That's still not equal to 30% pre-nerf DM," you may be thinking, but we get a 25% TBN as opposed to a 20% TBN. Do the math, and you see we get stronger mitigation than before, not weaker.

tl;dr- Dark Mind's fine even with the nerf cause 25% TBN and co-tank help.

Mathematically speaking you're getting the same EHP boost.

This gets repeated a lot and it's frankly wrong.

It is worth mentioning that you are correct in your statement, just wrong in your reasoning.

25% TBN is undoubtedly the strongest short mitigation. It affords Dark Knight the 25% EHP based on max health. The other shorts are all based on Current health, so no matter what, you always get the expected value from TBN.

It still keeps its "magical mitigation" flavor, while not being "as bad" as it currently is.

If your going to compare CD between tanks, compare the right ones. Raw intuition has replaced inner beast.

30 sec-ish CD. Designed to be spammed
Tbn. Raw int. Shelltron. Heart of stone.

30ish sec single target support on another player that shares resources/CD with above.
Tbn. Nascent flash. Intervention. Heart of stone.

Rampart. For all.

Shadowwall/sent/vengence/nebula. All 2min, 10 sec, 30%.

Immunities for all.

Job specific 20%:
ToB (10s/90s/20%). DM(10s/60s/20%magic). Camo(20s/90s/10%+50%parry ~20%total). Shield passive.

When you lay them out properly it becomes quite clear what SE is doing. The damage type limited actions have either MUCH shorter CD (dM) or DOUBLE duration (camo). Pld shield is rng, wars is the lowest uptime of everything.

This is the 3rd ot 4th time I've seen people compare raw intuition to dark mind. Raw intuition is competing with 25% hp bubbles and 6 seconds of shield blocks both of which easily match or beat 20% mitigation for 6 sec on RI.

Dark mind =/=Raw intuition.

Tank trait shouldn't even be in the discussion or calculations, it doesn't diminish other mitigations because there's never a point it will be off or not in effect, especially when they ALL have it. Its only relevant in old content and that hardly matters as well because you're not going to compare it to whatever damage you took before.

You mean, Thrill of Battle is actually better than I thought? And I thought a 20% life increase, 20% selfheal and 20% healbuff was already a good skill.

This all comes back to "magic tank". Not to beat a dead horse but I'm about to kick it again.

If you want to call DRK a high "resource management tank" bc most of what you are doing is using mp, manipulating mp/blood gauge, to pump out more damage and bolster shielding and I'm cool with that. But DRK having that magic tank stigma is only hurting it and gives it a poor identity.

For one, if DRK is great as a magic tank where is the tank diametrically opposed theme-wise, 3.x PLD, oh yeah they killed it off by allowing it to block magic. I guess SE thought damage specific tanks wouldn't work for PLD but ok for DRK.

Two, you would expect that if DRK were the magic tank, being strong against magic, that it would have an advantage in most things bc most damaging boss attacks are magic-based. It doesn't. Every other job does just fine taking magic damage. As far as CDs go, this "magic tank" theme is what allows for DRK to get magic only CDs. Powerful in there niche use but a niche use never the less. It's a slap in the face to give damage specific CDs. It's spitting in someone's face to give others the same 20% flat damage reduction when DRK gets the damage specific CD. Dark missionary suffers the very same issue as opposed to its counter parts. If you want to give DM damage specific CD then you might as well spread that across the board and that means raw intuition should be physical only. It's an inherent disadvantage baked in because of a poorly themed job identity as things have been stripped out of the game or have been downgraded in value.

DRKs aren't the only tanks who use magic, yet we are the ones stuck with the moniker "magic tank", and so the job will lag behind the rest until this flawed theme is put to rest.

While I agree, one thing to point out is that healers will be healing roughly 15-20% less from MND no longer having as strong of an effect on thier heals. So technically tanks didnt really gain as much in mitigation as people think.

Oh another edit, we wont have protect either, which for tanks is 5-8% mitigation. (depending on how geared u are.)

100% agree with this. I hate the double standard. If they wanted to push identity over general role usefulness, then DRK should get mp from magic sources and null magic abilities. But this isnt a realistic expectation. All the tanks need to be viable, and like healers need similar tools to do their role, how is it even balanced that the pld has passive magic mitigation, and the magic opposite version cant even block magic passively?
Honestly, the sad fact is that utility is sort of getting in the way, because they cant decide whether to just give tanks a utility, and their identity. PLD should always have 'cover' as a FF troupe, DRK 'darkside/souleater/darkness', WAR/Berserker/Viking 'Berserk' - outside of that identity they just need to be able to handle tanking as effectively as the others. No where do they need to be responsible for party shields and buffing, that should be given to support jobs like healers/support dps, to be blunt. But if theyre going to shift that to the tanks, for balancing, they need to be fair about these skills. They werent FF skills to begin with(well maybe in FFXI I cant really attest to that since I never played it)

ToB is in fact better than you really thought, but understand that TBN is even better!

I mean no disrespect to dungeon tankers, I'm not here to look down from my raiding ivory tower. I love dungeons too. However, let's ask ourselves-- does DRK really need another CD to mitigate trash in dungeons? TBN is the reason we can currently take less damage than WAR in huge packs, with or without tank stance, and perform comparable amounts of DPS. TBN is getting even better, and we're all getting a permanent trait to supplment its power. This means tanking trash is getting EVEN EASIER.

Maybe DM is only good at one thing, but does it matter if your other assets allow you to exceed your competition?

Well, lets wait and see how much mana we will actually have for TBN. The math people said we can use it once every 30 seconds, wich is half as often as we can use it now.

Not exactly, that is just the approximate rate of consistent usage based on how quickly it seems DRK will be able to regain MP as well as how frequently DRK should be using TBN to be equitable defensively to the other tanks while keeping up Darkside.

There will be some level of flexibility because there will likely be small amounts of extra MP generated regularly and bursts of extra MP every 60s and every 90s from Blood Weapon and Delirium. This extra MP makes it possible to store up and use extra TBNs but you may do so at the cost of being able to save up and time extra Edges to raid buff burst windows.

In dungeons raid buffs will not really be a consideration so you could use more TBNs in those, which then means that DRKs could potentially be getting to use TBN more frequently than the other tanks can use their frequent use defensive abilities which could make up for Dark Mind not helping much with trash packs.

Also, interestingly none of DRK's burst abilities increase the damage of abilities used during them, they just enable free usage or give extra resources to use more abilities. This is important because it then means that in situations where you don't have to worry about raid buffs, you actually don't have to sync abilities to your burst ability windows which is a big factor in freeing DRK up to use TBN more frequently in certain situations.

It's just so hilarious to me how Square wants to push this "Magic Tank" crap on us, but they go and nerf the very things that make us a "Magic Tank" XD

Dark Mind got nerfed, and our attack spell Abyssal Drain was butchered.

Fucking thank you finally someone who gets it.

I swear the only people saying that "Dark Mind is fine" or "just TBN LUL" dont try and play DRK at a high level. Now Im obviously not the best dark knight but using TBN as an argument is not a good one cause it is now the ONLY CD that is extremely punishing compared to the other ones tanks have. No other CD that tanks have will cost them damage if not successful (much less 500 potency of damage). You get no loss for using Raw Intuition, Sheltron or any other CD and the Gunbreaker shit doesnt even need to be thrown a shield to already be decent. TBN may be strong but other CDs are almost as strong and have NO drawback to using them where as TBN has the LARGEST drawback. The only way that TBN can be used as an argument as being a better cooldown than the others is to make it to where you gain Dark Arts regardless of it breaking or not. Either that needs to happen or Dark Mind needs to be all damage cause of how high the risk of using TBN will be.

The thing tthay strikes me as strange about DM complaints is that drk is the least focused on magic defense as it has ever been. Every self mitigation tool it has in shadowbringers mitigates any damage, except DM. And that was reduced to a less inportant CD (20% and matches the 20% of other tanks). So they have made magic damage even less important part of their kit. The claims of SE trying to shoehorn drk as the magic tank seem a little disingenuous when drk has been reducing its focus on magic defense in favor of all defense every expac. 3.0 had DM. Did not have TBN. Wall was 3 min. 4.0 tbn added for all damage. Wall reduced to 2 min. Tbn duration buffed. 5.0 tbn mega buffed. DM nerfed. Drks focus on magic for survival has been drastically reduced in favor of wall and tbn buffs. Isnt that what people want(those that complain about the magic tank).

For the other common argument is that it isnt as good as tob. That 8s a debatable point as tob has a 50% longer CD. Would you be fine wity upping the recast from60sec to 90 sec to get that physical mitigation? I see lots of posts saying it needs to cover phy damage. I dont see any mentioning an increase in CD to conpensate. Which is the point. It has a tradeoff for that 1 dimensial mitigation and that is absurdly high frequency and uptime. Are you willing to give up the good parts of the skill to change the negative downside? Otherwise youre just asking for rampart on a 60 sec timer.

Sure, why not? Use it more frenquently when its use isnt a gamble, seems like a fair trade to me.

or how about 10% and the added effect of blood price, if were going the full ToB route. Forget the extra healing were a magic tank nao.

Most people prefer to have versatile abilities over situational ones. That's why the "physical damage only" and "magical damage only" cooldowns tend to be poorly received.

Thematically, if you want DRK to be a "magic tank", have them reflect magic damage. Thrill of Battle is functionally 17% DR on a 90 second recast (against all damage types). Drop Dark Mind down to 15% DR against all damage types on a 90 second recast, and have it counterattack every time the damage taken is magical. Likewise, have Dark Missionary work on all damage types, but have it convert incoming magical damage into extra MP.

You want a magic tank theme? Make it feel like a strength, not a weakness. That's how you build an identity.

Oh of course people prefer to have multipurposed skills. They are stronger all other things equal. I was just pointing out that few posts take note of the upsides of DM and just harping on the 1 damage type. Ie not equal. If you want a generalist akill like tob, then it comes with the longer cd/lower uptime as both camo and DM have either much shorter CD (DM) or double the duration (camo).

If you arent happy with dm/camo and want to buff the effect, you also loose the beneficial part of the tradeoff. Just food for thought as people continue to post on DM.

Personally i dont mind dm as it is, but if they made it TOB 2.0 it would also be fine as both models are effective imo. Ill just work with my cotank so i can use the advantage (low cd) and avoid the downsides by letting cotank eat physical. My group will be stronger than 2 neutrals that way. If its tob 2.0 i just wont do those things.

Hey bud, don't make fun of my grey logs, I can still state facts! If you're using DM in tandem with TBN, it's safe to say you're using it for a tank buster. For sure it's going to break, and there's no punishment. If you want to throw TBN all willy-nilly, that's on you, but don't pretend the "risk" is unavoidable. BTW, vengeance could be argued to carry the same kind of risk of lost damage if you don't use it paired with IR.

But really, let's go back to the main argument that you yourself presented. You're dissatisfied with DM being nerfed, because it means being more susceptible to magical tank busters. However, TBN is a good argument because it will always supplement DM and that has been buffed to compensate. If you only want DM to be fine, then why are you so upset? It's fine! You're crying over nothing!
