Thavnairian Onion plans

My FC has been working on making onions for people. Thought I'd bounce off fellow gardeners here see if anyone had thoughts on how to tweek or if they could use. I don't claim its best way but been working pretty good for us.

Yea I used that to make this. The method they suggest did seem a little outdated to me

Personally I would switch the Nymeia Lily for Jute - Jute at least serves a prupose for several crafts, while the Lily is only used for a hat, I think?

Given that one possible Jute-cross is Jute x Mandrake, you'd also save on seeds once you get the initial breed going!

Without doing the excat math right now, I'd probably end up with one bed that has Jute growing all the time and alternating between Mandrake (to get Jute back) and Curiel (to get onions); and a second bed with Onions and Charmomille (for the Curiel) like you suggested.

That's not really outdated. Onions require crossing two crops that are also crossed, so it takes a really long time before you actually start getting onion yields. iirc the lead time is 21 days if only using one garden and no fertilization. And that's best case scenario where all crosses are successful, as the onions themselves take 10-days to mature. So the question really is which two crops do you want to cross?

Jute is the more profitable choice as the seeds, the crop, and the yarn all sell very well since they are used to make the nicer looking rugs in the game. Unfortunately, the yield rate for onions is much lower than other crosses.

RNG is a bit tougher to stomach when you have to wait several days for the results. Choose the least painful method.

My 3 bed method feeds itself all the seeds needed without gathering, but requires a lot to get started:

Bed 1: Thav Onions + Linseed (Shroud Soil) -> Pahsana seeds + Linseeds
Bed 2: Glazenuts + Pahsana seeds (Thav Soil) -> Thav Onions seeds + Apricot seeds
Bed 3: Glazenuts + Apricots (Thav Soil) -> Glazenut seeds

• Never empty the bed completely; crossing is determined by what is next to a plant when you plant it, nothing else. After you harvest something, re-plant in the same spot before harvesting something else.
  
• If you run out of Apricots, replace them for a round with Pahsana seeds.
  
• If you run out of Glazenuts, don't harvest the ones in the bed until you can replace them, because they still create crosses for what you plant next to them.
  
• If you run out of Thav Onions, you can replace them with Krakka roots to crank out Pahsana seeds and Linseeds

That's v. nice. I was looking for a way to get Onions started for my fc and I have like 40 Jute seeds sitting in my retainer. I'll deffo try this out, thanks for the tip :D

Is what seemed outdated to me being that its all arr stuff(i think) just how I feel your entitled to feel differently. Using shard seeds and fc credit seeds seems more recent, reliable and useful for fc mates. One of the cool things is that there is many ways to do it. not trying to take that from ya. I'm not down with being uber meta so much as useful and reliable I'll remake another one incorporating jute soon

I may try with the perpetual jute loop with one bed. another jute with mandrake then cham and onions on 3rd like Vidu suggested where I'm at now figuring out how root works into it now.

It be Ideal to find a way that uses 3 beds even though we use more and make a basic guide that is a little more up to date for everyone to use. thanks for your input.

If a plant is done can you still cross with it even though its completed? I know you can then pull up finished and with new plants be able to cross something new does it work same way if plant is ready for harvest?

The reason why I say it is not outdated is because the ffxivgarderning.com site itself is continuously updated. I don't know how I 'feel' anything differently. I'm just stating facts to the best of my knowledge. And with that said, I need to correct my previous post because I shouldn't say that the jute route is 'much' lower because it's actually only a 1% lesser chance than the highest. It's just my own personal result of that particular cross that does make me feel that way.

Shards are very profitable too, and my gardening mate in my FC swears by it. I don't personally use this method because I prefer to get maximum yield when using shard seeds, and using seeds for crossing purposes that only take a day to mature becomes tedious and you will burn through thanalan soil like there is no tomorrow. But if this is the method that works for you, I am not going to tell you not to do it that way.

Either way you look at it, you still need to cross two crossbreed crops in order to get the onions. How everyone goes about getting those seeds is totally up to preference, but there is definitely a most efficient, and most profitable approach to going about it.

I like to also make a loop where you make stuff for stable brooms and blood peppers for minions as they make for nice prizes for fc events and using anything that can be fed into the onion loop.

mandrake seeds in 24 housrs not really for the shards more or less to use when things aint done or sneak in there. We all pitch in dirts not an issue. I just wish we had a bag for seeds that all could go in.

What I do is crop rotation because whenever I mass produce Royal Fern, I crash the market. So I'll start with Mirror Apples + Krakka Root. Both have demand on the MB, although the profit will be low. That will get me Curiel Root Seeds. Then I'll use Curiel Root seeds with Royal Fern to produce Thavnairian Onion seeds. Both Curiel Roots and Royal Fern have demand on the market. Then I'll grow Thavnairian Onion with Camomile to get more Curiel Root seeds.

But eventually I need the time to get more Royal Fern seeds (I dedicate 1 garden for blood peppers and old world figs to keep up Royal Fern production and so I don't have to re-plant blood peppers) and Curiel Root seeds so I'm constantly rotating my crops and stockpiling large amounts of seeds.

Here is my rotation.

Keep a bed on pretty much constant rotation with Ala Mhigan Mustard and Linseed to make Mandrake Seeds. The Mustard seeds and Linseeds are very cheap from your GC.

Once I have enough Mandrake seeds, i grow 2 beds of Cieldalaes Pineapple x Mandrake - this usually yields Onion Prince Seeds and if you're lucky Mimett Gourd Seeds.
Fertilize only the Cieldalaes Pineapple as it grows much more quickly than the mandrakes and you can get up to 2 - 3 yields.

Once I have about 8 - 16 Mimett Gourd seeds, and some Onion Prince Seeds in abundance, I cross the Mandrakes with Onion Prince for Pearl Roselle Seeds.
Fertilize only the Mandrakes for two yields because the Onion Prince take a very long time to grow.

I cross the Pearl Roselle and the Mimett Gourd seeds for Thav Onion Seeds.
Fertilize only the Mimett Gourds for a double yield.
I try to get at least 8 Thav Onion seeds before the next part.

I plant 4 x 4 (Thav Onion x Mandrake) in each bed to obtain more Mimett Gourd seeds, since naturally you will have more abundance of the Pearl Roselle.
Fertilize only the Mandrake for a double yield.

This is my personal rotation. Hope its helpful to someone.

Mandrake seeds are very easily procured from a retainer. You can get 4 seeds in 160 minutes.

Heh! My FC mate showed me something similar because she just loves to plant those shards. What I told her though is that I would never use garden beds to cross for seeds that can be harvested. Yes, I know mandrake seeds SUCK to harvest because they share the node with another seed adding another layer of RNG. Basically though, I would tell my FC mate that she's not optimizing the garden beds, adding to overall lead time, and accepting a 50% lower yield on shards for seed packets she can get herself.

To acquire mandrake seeds, I just send my retainer after them, and I will harvest them myself if I am waiting in a queue. If I do this while doing my roulettes, I usually end up with 5-8 seed packets by the time I am done. What's important is that I have another set of mandrakes seeds ready to go by the time the current crops mature. For me, I need to gather 12 packets in five Earth day's time, which is easily done using the methods I just mentioned.

The thing is, she got mad at me and I felt like that one guy in dungeons who tries to push their optimal rotations on someone unsolicited. So please don't think I'm pushing the one all, be all way to do things. That was more of sharing a story between my FC mate and I over mandrakes, while also mentioning an alternative means to go about getting mandrakes if it does interest you :)

I always use retainer to get mandrake seeds or any other seed they can get. Feels a waste to do otherwise and it's a chore to get the than soil for shard crosses.

+1 for sending retainers out. I have a botanist to gather seeds and a miner to gather soils, and you can get a fairly large stockpile going after only a couple of days.

I currently use the curiel/nymeia cross for my onions, since I use nymeia seeds and flowers as part of my mandragora minion/doll business. If I find myself with a larger-than-needed stockpile of nymeia then I'll switch to jute since it is quite useful for various things.

Gotcha! I forgot retainers got them, still cant hurt to toss in a set of shards to get a few now and then if you can sneak in that 2 day wait period if you got the dirt. swap to roots kinda where I'm at with it.

Hi! I'm the developer of FFXIV Gardening. You are right that the current cross diagrams for Thav Onion are pretty outdated (though still relevant). I just haven't really got around to making updated one's as there are so many different ways to go about it producing the seeds. I agree that perhaps an updated one using shard seeds and other newer crosses is in order. I'll see what can be done.

The site is always being updated with new crosses (usually at least once a week, sometimes more). We've discovered about 60% of all known crosses and are gradually chipping away at that number week by week with relentless cross testing! Sylkis Bud + Nymeia Lily = Onion

Shroud Tea + Onion = sylkis Bud

Coerthan Tea + Mandrake =Nymeia Lily

When I need Mandrake I grow Coerthan Tea + Krakka Root which can also give me Sylkis bud or soemtimes Midland Basil + void drake which only takes a day
