Can RDM get a little bit of love...

As the title says can Red Mages get a little bit of love, anything would be nice a buff to embolden so it can work on both melee and magic, a buff to our damage, anything. But we could really use something we are weaker than Bard's and they bring better support lol.

the problem is dualcast rez, it's strong enough that if we get any sort of direct buff. it could make smn and blm less than stellar. Unfortunately even if we saw a potency gain, if it doesn't make us the best caster. the community will just treats the job like it's bad.

I would never look for a RDM for my group. I always prefer SMN or BLM. Dualcast rez is just useless for me. I got 2 healers that can rez once a minute, and if more ppl die then the group just deserves the wipe.

Embolden's buff makes sense though. Consider that Embolden is typically used during a RDM's combo. What jobs are in melee range? Hint: Not casters. That's why it buffs physical damage to everyone except you. SE wants you to use it for your melee combo (which is magic damage) while buffing nearby allies (who are all physical DPS and tanks).

That said, I think a few buffs are necessary:

-Increase potency on all spells by 10-15.
-Scatter has a 100% chance of proccing Enhanced Scatter. Scatter cast while under "Enhanced Scatter" cannot proc "Enhanced Scatter". That way it's every other cast, similar to Jolt II - > Impact.
-Increase the potency of Enhanced Moulinet, possibly make it a circular AoE radius instead of cone, as the angle is not so wide and it rarely hits everything. Maybe make it cost 25/25 instead of 30/30.
-Decrease the animation lock of Embolden. Everytime I try to weave Embolden between melee attacks, I clip.
-Perhaps let one of RDM's skills restore 10% of your max MP or something, as RDM has no native way to refresh MP outside of Lucid Dreaming. I'm thinking Enhanced Redoublement can drain a chunk of MP, say like 1200 MP at level 70.
-Remove Tether and replace it with a oGCD floor damage AoE, similar to Salted Earth/Shadow Flare, or the effect can be no damage but enemies in the field take increased magic damage 5%.

Those affect Direct Hit and Critical Hit Rate. There's no such thing as Magic-specific Critical Hit or Magic-specific Direct Hit. There is, however, Magic Damage+X% (old Foe's Requiem) and Physical Damage+X%(old Rook Hypercharge), as well as Damage Taken+X% (Trick Attack). perhaps SE thought RDM having a All Damage+10% would be too strong or something, idk. But my justification makes sense as to the intended use of the current Embolden, that is: to buff the RDM's spellblade combo and finisher spell while buffing nearby party members who would be closest to the RDM during their combo (melee DPS and tanks, who all do phys dmg). It's the same reason why Brotherhood only affects phys dmg.


There's only 1 job that gets a buff that raises everyone's damage directly and it's SMN's Devotion. It's either Phys dmgX+%, Magic dmg X+%, Crit rate+X%, Direct hit +x%. Trick Attack/Hypercharge isn't a buff, it's a debuff that targets the mob not your party and gives them a vuln debuff that responds to any damage source. Devotion is 2% for 15s, which is pretty weak. I doubt they'd give RDM a 20s 10% decaying bonus to both damage sources unless they reduce the bonus by 50% or something.

Dualcast rez cannot be used as an excuse to not buff Red Mage. I know that is not what you are getting at personally but it is SE reasoning.
RM has really bad mp recovery and other then lucid i feel like it should have something better as all casters have access to lucid and better recovery of mp.
Damage is rather sad especially considering it's "utility" is much less then many other jobs like: Smn, Bard, Mach, Ninja, Drg all of which also do more damage outside of their utility

Rdm needs actually useful utility cause right now battle Rez (you get like 3-4 rezzes off before all ur mp is gone and if ur rezzing 3-4 people u ain't clearing anything) and embolden isn't that good to warrant lowest dps amongst all dps jobs. I'd like to see an ability like presence of mind(basically haste) as either a small aoe ability or single target where the party member gets a buff and u get a smaller version of the buff. Also I'd like to see a aoe shield (that doesn't conflict with sch/ast shields) either replace Vercure or go along side it. We can call them VerHaste and VerShell :P . Or just buff damage and keep everything the same, but I'd much rather the utility rework because I think that's what the rdm identity should stay as.

My first change to RDM is change
Manification from: Resets the cooldown on CaC and Dis, doubles the current values of your BW mana gauge. To: Resets the Cooldown of CaC and Dis, Allows the next 3 weapons skills to become enchanted and reduces the cost of enchanted weapon skills to 0.

This allows RDM synergies better with burst windows and abuse utilities much more efficiently.

You can make anything 'make sense' if you paint a scenario for it.

It's a damage buff. It's bottom line. Any other sort of justification not only doesn't hold water (A party is going to be well within range of each other for standard 15-20y radius) as well as failing on its own merit (Because it also buffs the Red Mage's spell damage, which can be done at range, and at least one spell likely will; The combo finisher following a displacement)

Why shouldn't Red Mage have a decaying 10% to Damage? It averages out to 6% all damage with 16% uptime (1% RDPS on average) compared to -just Bard's passive crit bonus- which is 2% crit, which at base crit levels is 1% more average damage.

heres what i would do to fix RDM

red crystal now gives you a 10% damage buff
if you have blue crystal or white crystal buff it will weaken respected spell by 10%
Monochamy(pvp skill becoming a normal skill) is a 10 second debuff on enemy (similar to foe requiem and trick attack) 80 second CD Cost 50 of each mana to use
Manafiction is now 80 second CD and will restore a little bit of MP
Embolden is the same 10% buff but for the entire 20 seconds no drop off and will give a 10% heal buff too
Displacement now halve enmity
Corps-a-corps now resets the timer on ver fire,ver stone,enhanced scatter and Impact (puts it back up to 30)
Scatters enhance scatter proc is now 50%
when you cast Jolt 2 it turns into impact till you use it then turns back to jolt 2 not a separate button
moulinent now cost only 25 to be enhanced

agree, increase Emolden potency... or make it buff both physical and magical dps of all party members..

if theyre honest, most want drg, nin, brd/ mch, mnk and even smn for theyre "buffs".. (sure, also for theyre other utilities.., but Ive seen it too often, its mostly for the buffs, unless a fight has extreme mp usage for healers or extreme aggro reasons or needs plenty rezes .., but those aside all want buffs in raids)

Rdm dps seemed fine before they fixed the bug. Since they fixed that and the other casters received some unnecessary buffs the job is perceived as weak to the if it’s not the best it sucks crowd.

Maybe they could accelerate entering melee faster to slightly increase dps and the pace of the job without making too many people cry. Especially black mages.

Embolden offers such unique effect and a very high one too when you compare it to the party buffs from other jobs. So it's need to be very careful if you cause it to effect both Phys/Magic damage of all party members otherwise it's essentially just an OP version of SMN's Devotion (without the added healing potency).

RDM could benefit from a slight increase in either potency of certain actions or a little quicker increase of Mana or decrease in their cost for rotations. Definitely Tether needs some rework maybe something similar to the Tri-Bind improvement, as it's pretty much a useless action in high level content (excluding Eureka).

I don't find MP to be an issue with RDM at all unless you are rezzing unnecessarily (i.e. not giving healers the chance first, or having too many deaths in the party).

In pulls that actually lead to a clear, summoners are better at rezzing than red mage. The GCD that red mages spend is worth quite a lot more potency than the gcd that summoners spend. And if you've gotten to the point where more than 3 people die within 60 seconds, you're either running casual content where comp doesn't matter, or you're gonna wipe.

1) It's an interesting thought, but not for pre-5.0, I don't think. A red mage typically spends... say... 3-5 gcds every 40 seconds without a red crystal. Given one of those GCDs is your verholy/flare, I'd estimate that this is quite simply a straight 7% increase in damage. This would shoot red mage from where it is now to somewhere between monk and black mage, but based on its utility it should be put somewhere in the realm of dragoon or machinist. While red mage does need a buff, I think it simply needs it in the form of fine-tuned potency changes, and leave new mechanical changes like that for 5.0.

2) Red mage is already punished in the form of lowered mana generation, which translates directly to lost potency.

3) 100 mana (50 of each), multiplied by the calculated mana-to-potency value of mana (~4.7 potency per mana) equates to 470 potency. If the red mage wanted to make this damage up, he would have to deal 4700 potency within the next ten seconds, which is... quite simply not gonna happen. Even if you plan ahead and get to 90/91, pop this, then manafication, and use your melee combo as well as line up fleche, contre sixte, displacement, and corps-a-corps with a swiftcast to top it all off right before the debuff falls off, you've squeezed 1520 (full melee combo) + 300 (thunder) + 260 (CaC and displacement) + 420 (fleche) + 300 (contre sixte) = 2800 potency. Yes, it's quite certainly a raid dps increase, but that's not what red mage needs with half of its utility already coming at the cost of its damage.

4) Define "a little bit" and I'll tell you if it's a nerf or a buff. But I'd rather not have it either way, because this class definitely doesn't need any simplification.

5) This is now a better ability than trick attack, and doesn't cost the red mage any uses of a ninjutsu like ninja does. Honestly, trick attack needs nerfing, and embolden is mostly fine. Have it affect all damage types on everyone and it'd be good.

6) red mage doesn't have enmity issues, excepting the first 2 seconds of the fight because its squeezing 1320 potency into that window. To solve that problem, red mage takes diversion. To solve its mana problems, it takes lucid dreaming. Between the two of those, I've often had zero problems with aggro even without ever using diversion again, because lucid takes care of the rest. And displacement would not solve the "first two seconds" problem. Honestly, displacement's damage should be removed and shunted somewhere else into the kit. If bard's mobility utility can be held, why not ours?

7) Hmm... It's an interesting idea. Kinda like it. It'd help solve those issues where you sometimes have too many procs and you're forced to use an impactful proc before it falls off even when you have the other two up.

8) I would personally much rather it was a 100% chance to proc and had some other skills to meaningfully lead into. But that's future-design-space territory. As that is it's just a buffed version of the same old "spam scatter until you moulinet". Don't disagree with it, but don't think it's necessary.

10) I'd have to disagree here. If red mage needs buffs, it's not in the aoe department. You can already fit 5 enchanted moulinets into an embolden window, this would just make it easier to preform and bump it up to 6. Which seems like overkill. I'd rather they focus on red mage's single-target issues.



Red mage definitely needs buffs. And it also has a lot of open design space. However, those are, to me, different issues. Give red mage simple dps and QoL buffs to put it in line with its current level of utility. Save all the neat things, like branching melee combo, or alternate ways to spend mana, or bonuses for having lots of procs, etc, for 5.0 and beyond.

Except... it isn't. While valuable, dualcast raise only really benefits initial prog. Once you've seen the mechanics, RDM's lackluster damage makes SMN a far superior choice. Keep in mind, SMN has a raise too. So you don't necessarily have to clear the mechanic but simply see it once or twice. If people are still making mistakes, well, SMN can pick them up and will help alleviate the lost rDPS better.

Yes but advocating that rdm is poorly balanced because of verrraise isn't the same as saying verraise shouldn't be the reason why rdm is where it is. RDM has low dps because in prog if it could pick up an entire team"hyperbole" or even 2 within the 60secs it would take any of the healers to do while doing more comparable damage to the other casters, SMN & BLM would be practically worthless. It's a very powerful utility when it works, and it does work. I will not discredit the claim that it falls off after prog and i understand that you believe it shouldn't be balanced around verraise but, as of now verraise is far too powerful "when" it works to ignore.

RDM is balanced around verraise correctly, if we want more from the job. ASK for a rework and the removal of dualcast rez instead of meaningless potency increases that won't mean anything if they don't make the job closer to it's counterparts. Lets also be realistic, if rdm gets buffed to where it's more valuable than SMN and BLM, it's going to still have compete with MCH and the double ranged meta

And as noted by JohnnyDevo above, you won't meet enrage under those circumstances in any fight with a strict enough enrage where death matters. You aren't clearing Guardian and God Kefka early into the tier with several deaths in quick succession. Clown Kefka's DPS check within the first few weeks was harder to meet than anything in Ultimate. RDM's value plummets in such a scenario because 2-4 deaths means, you wipe. Go back and stop dying. Even in more casual settings, people still prefer wiping after multiple deaths in lieu of saving a run because it's less of a strain and, admittedly, parses.

Buffing RDM's numbers slightly does not mean it monopolizes prog anymore than WHM does. It means players won't be gimping their party by an absurdly high rDPS loss. Currently, SMN contributes 600 more pDPS while offering comparable utility. That's the equivalent of Trick Attack or Disembowel+Battle Litany with BRD. We can close the gap without RDM suddenly dominating prog.

If it must be a dichotomy, I would rather RDM have a significant DPS and/or utility buff with Verraise getting a 60sec lock than keep things as they are. Frankly, all three casters need to be looked at because the answer remains "SMN" in virtually all scenarios.

rdm can't lose its dual-cast / rez ability (become like smn rez), and get more dps instead..., that would make rdm lose its identity

rdm: high rez / low dps (easiest to master in raids)
smn: low rez / high dps (middle easy to master if pet syned pet, hard to master / max with obey pet)
blm: no rez / very high dps (but probably hardest to master in raids)

casters have a certain balance and variety at the same time

rdm low dps is only a problem, if the whole group has low dps or its speed kill / farm ..., still see smn / rdm spots open more often (in UWU), than smn / blm .. many still just like the embolden buff for personal reasons over the high blm dps

but a tick more deeps for rdm can be fine, just rdm is already very desirable in most content and very unique..., whlie blm stil struggles in some PFs

smn is the winner atm, but there will always be a winner...

That's where you and I will have to disagree Shiroe. RDM's identity is not in its dualcast raise ability, and that seems like a very odd thing to even want for an identity for a DPS.

Anyone who thinks RDM should be Rezmage must not understand feeling their damage bottom out while chainressing several people.

I remember the days when brd and mch had the best utility AND where top dps too..., that was just wrong.. (end of HW), even if they depended on drg

rdm wants utility, sure ..., rdm want more dps, sure ..., but with its utility and easy playstyle, rdm should still remain low tier dps..

if you want more dps but less or no utility, play smn or blm

RDM wants more utility to match its current level of damage, or more damage to match its current level of utility. It's a strawman to pretend we want both, and Yoshida has already gone on record saying ease of playstyle isn't what they balance on.

Isnt Red mage sppose to be about balance? Be both good in white and black magic but not excel i those magics while also bringing someting new? I feel like red mage should be a red mage like its ffxi counterpart, ( been playing ffxi and starting as a rdm) can heal and dps, i guess a support more than anything. Maybe thats just me though.

Yes but if you've played the current game, you should for instance know that almost everything is about dps and people number one concern is dps is most case, this is true for dps, tank and heal.


If you go on the healing section, you'll see a pletorad of WHM post complaining about lilies and every single one of them propose rework to increase their dps. Every single post about WHM is how they don't bring enough rdps to the table compared to AST/SCH.
No one ever talk about healing, only about dps.
Since you play healer, you know that healer spend usually around 80 to 90% of their time dpsing in a riad environnement that isn't crippled by bad tank and constant dps death. Which means again that, overall "healing" is a very minor concern even to healer.

Tank "default" stance is dps with 100% dps materia.

Currently, RDM suffers from a low dps and you propose to trade even more DPS for... healing? the one thing we could cut by 50% and still manage to complete everything this game has to offer?
I mean, if you want more heal the one thing that could eventually happen is that RDM heal is potent enough to replace one healer (just give them a Ver Medica). Basically, 1heal 1rdm would be the new "healing" meta for... guess what? more dps.

The only kind of support RDM would need is more dps. It's more than fine on the defense side of things and I really wish they'd put a 60sec cd on that raise so they could bump up their dps.

well but thats the opinion the com built themselves... its not SE opinion yet at least no official word about a mindset like that - if they would think like that, discussions/cls designs like rdms, smn and brds would never break out the way we are used to nowadays... ^^

At the risk of being overly simplistic in a sea of wild creative suggestions - they could increase all four elemental damage spells by 30 potency, and RDM's place vis-a-vis the other casters wouldn't change at all.

It would -still- be noticeably behind on dps, just by a much less embarrassing margin. So I'm not sure why they can't get at least that much, given SE's proclivity to fix things by making potency numbers bigger.

I'm of the opinion that both RDM and BLM should be examined and improved accordingly. I'd like to see RDM be a bit more comparable to BRD without being exactly the same. Either way, RDM needs more utility than a mediocre buff that degrades with time, limited healing ability, and quick rezzing that should only really see use in prog and the occasional odd emergency. It also certainly needs to be able to do more damage. There should not be one definitive "lowest damaging" job, just as there should be no definitive "strongest" job. Furthermore, jobs that do less damage should certainly have utility enough to balance things out. As it stands, while I love RDM it's pretty much the weakest job, has weak utility, and very limited resources for the one utility people seem to (misguidedly) care about with limited means of recovering those resources.

If they didn't think that, then they are incompetent. If they wanted healing and tanking to be more difficult, they would pump the numbers up, and they would implement ways to punish healers and tanks for pushing dps, while also adjusting dps checks to no longer account for healer/tank contribution.

For example, o3s needed around 24k dps to clear. There are only 33 players who ever completed o3s (when gear was still pre 4.2) with over 6k dps. They quite obviously design the fights with healer and tank contribution in mind. So why wouldn't the players also flock to this mindset of "dps trumps everything else?"

What if they gave relavent potency increases to RDM to help balance it with the other casters and then added an effect to Verraise that gave the RDM a dps down debuff for some length of time after Verraise was used?

Groups that bring a RDM for the chainressing could still do so but when a group got to the point of not needing the RDM to perform in that way the RDM could remain viable by virtue of their own personal dps.

In a way you can already see this happening - just the missed potency and mana gain from using Vercure/Verraise will sink your dps quickly, but if we started at a respectable amount of damage and had to sacrafice even more to get our parties out of a tight spot I wouldn't be opposed necessarily since on a fight where my utility is useless I'm still bringing something to the table.

They could just do what WoW did long time ago: Differenciate between normal raise and in combat raise and give in combat raise a cooldown.

Before SB such a thing existed, both CNJ/WHM and AST had to obtain a Trait from leveling up that allowed them to use Raise/Ascend in combat, otherwise it just wasn't possible. If I remember correctly Arcanist (and SCH/SMN) didn't need such a trait and were able to rez in combat even before CNJ could. Anyway not sure why they removed the traits, but reintroducing them in some way so that healers get the full benefits of using Rez but the casters do not (like a cooldown or worser weakness on the target) then that might help control the situation with the RDM. Although the RDM issues are more than just rezzing so who knows what the future holds for them.

In order to give Verraise a cooldown, it would need to be changed from a spell to an ability (oGCD). There's no spell I can think of that has its own cooldown that isn't an instant cast.

Not that it's exactly the same but Emperyal (sp?) Arrow on BRD is classified as a Weaponskill (non-caster equivalent to a spell, so not an Ability) but it has an independent timer. It's a precedent for this at least.

To be clear I would prefer the CD on Verraise myself but I suggested the damage down debuff because it seemed like some people were very keen on retaining the ability to chain raises.

This is irrelevant because the trait was at level 22 anyways.
