Yes, this is another thread - and hopefully one of many.
I encourage you to post your own one.

What SE is doing with this new patch is a cynical and divisive move, aggressive and thoughtless. The one thing that we all have in common is we love Final Fantasy and are happy to subscribe to FFXIV because we enjoy this game and in turn are happy to pay SE for this product.

This game has been on the edge of exploitation for a long time - so close to the nonsense they've been pulling (or at least trying to) with the other arms of the company but until now it hasn't been as blatant.

This is bad and should be called out.

I don't know what to do - I won't pay for the app, yet I don't want to be in a game that sets this up as a thing. I don't think it's right - and I think as a community if we let it slide it will be the first step on the way to the end.

This is a bad day for this game, for us and our community.

I completely agree. We need to stand up and be loud.

However, after talking to my boyfriend (Japanese), I'm disheartened to hear... the Japanese community is mostly POSITIVE about the announcement. 75% of people polled said they would be happy to pay for the app and some even said they would pay MORE. When I expressed my concerns to my bf, he told me that the player base they target in Japan is mostly adults with a steady income, where this is their only form of entertainment and so they have no issues to pay for it and have the traditional mindset of Japanese people where paying more = quality.

So we really need to push back hard if we want to make it clear that the western player base won't stand for it. But seeing the feedback from the Japanese community.... I'm not sure if it will make a difference. :/

We can shout and rant as much as we want , but they will ignore us.....

Well with what Mikki said is true, we can forget about doing a damn thing. Homefront comes first.
Japanese love mobile anything as it's their forte and preferred way of gaming and stuff anyways.

Don't support the app. Don't support the Mog Station. Hell, don't support SE's other titles - both published and internally developed - or at least not at full price. That's what I'm doing. After all, my subscription is likely helping fund their development costs for other titles anyway; why shouldn't I wait for a discount?

Peer pressure is also valuable here. The items on the Mog Station are appealing partly because they elicit 'oohs' and 'aahs' from fellow players. "Hey, where'd that glowing Carbuncle mount come from? It's awesome!" Instead of reacting this way, either keep quiet or, politely, shrug and point out that you don't support shameless cash grabs. Get people thinking.

A negative backlash could theoretically push SE to limit the Mog Station efforts to Japanese servers. Blizzard does this with some of their titles; the Asian versions are very much distinct from NA / EU versions in terms of monetization efforts. It shows an astuteness that SE simply lacks.

Honestly, though, I'm still leaning toward the idea that this is simply corporate greed at work, be damned player feedback. They've done similar monetization shit with other titles they've published, too; timed Xbox exclusive for the second Tomb Raider game, a companion mobile app and crappy tacked-on DLC for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, etc. Those are titles marketed at NA and EU audiences more than Japan, and yet they're still tone-deaf. I suppose it's possible that they are well and truly ignorant of cultural differences, but I suspect they're intentionally abusing these practices to make a quick buck.

Speaking of which, what's the reaction of the JP community in regards of this APP?

I'll be downloading the app, it's optional to pay you don't *Need* to pay. The features even for the free plan is worth it.

I suspect long threads with many posters would probably hold more weight than many short and threads, most of which will drop off the first page pretty quickly.

Honestly I understand the need for supplementary revenue streams. Subscription revenue is constant and reliable but hard to grow without raising the cost of subscription which greatly limits the ability of a development team to grow or improve the features and content of a game. Some people seem to treat it like some vast ocean of wealth but it isn't. MMOs are very expensive and frankly some of the most cost to profit ratio poor products a game developer can produce. There popularity has been on the decline in the west as well which only makes them less appealing to investors. Thus if consumers of these games want more from them, then there will be the need to improve revenue to cover the higher expense.

Not all monetisation is bad. Some is healthy for the game. It needs to increase the funds that the game can use to pay for further development. However its definitely an area that easily leads to problems and monetisation that is bad for the game. Personally I feel this App might be stepping over that limit. For a long time the retainer system has been... questionable but this feels somewhat more blatant and open to development that may make it worse. This is an area SE really needs to handle carefully and I think they missed the mark here. The App isn't a breaking point, at least for me, but it does take their monetisation methods in a direction I find concerning.

just so you know SE bases feedback on the size of a thread not the number of threads.

so instead of making a lot of threads you want one huge thread, which is normally what happens when the playerbase is out raged (example pretty much every time new housing is released)

right now there has been almost no outrage 2 threads that are only 15 ish pages with maybe a total of just 10 people argueing back n forth.

it's currently not enough to make a dent.

JP generally tend to spend more money on entertainment than NA/EU. Even if the game was released in NA/EU with bigger playerbase, most of the game income will come from JP. So it is natural that the company will be more focused on who is willing to paying more.

I am looking forward to using the APP, the pay features add the convenience of not having the be home to monitor and change pricing on the items I have on the MB. Plus who know might be able to catch some great deals on items now. Will also be super helpful during new patch rushes, and new expansion rushes. For me personally this is a welcomed feature and cannot wait to use it.

Only if you pay $5/month premium PLUS extra for the virtual currency though. $5/month only lets you revise 2 listings per day (as far as we can tell). lol.

$5+ extra a month for added convenience seems like a great deal to me. I would gladly spend $20 extra for such conveniences.

basic UI feature (moving items from retainer to retainer) should not be locked behind a second sub
second, if you are a full time crafter, this lets you have 400 slots of sales at a push of a button to change those prices, while on your main is 400 more slots. As far as the MB is conserd this app crosses the line into pay to win.

Say no to any form of pay to win, no reason base sub should be this disadvantaged then someone doing p2w on the MB.

I am shocked the Japanese community is supporting this, sure if the game was worth 34 dollars a month but the flop dresser and reskining fate running? Where is our money going? there is nothing extra being put into the game, so why do we need pay more when the game is lacking to begin with?

your sub pays for it, now we see why game companies do this, people fall for the rip off thinking they are getting something extra for their money. I bet you they would still have a huge profit by making it free. This should be in the BASE game, we are not seeing much out of 10 EUR up to 28 EUR a month.

here, this is why SE shouldn't be charging us extra fees per month, stuff like this needs to be fixed and feel more finalized. (Eureka was beta, glam dresser is beta) stop giving us beta as final release, put more money in the game for gods sake.

You are not paying for convenience, you are showing SE why they can he more shady in the future.

I just went through this over the last 2-3 years of my 7 year run with the game DC Universe Online. In fact it was the constant and ever increasing appearance of pay walls/seeds of pay walls that drove me to stop playing and come back here (I started and left FFXIV in 2015). This MMO offers way more for it's subscription than DCUO, and I do still love that game.

I've only spent a short amount of time with this game and I already love nearly everything about it, but I really hope I don't have to experience that same disappointment again...so I remain optimistic.

I know better than to judge by what I experience in forums. Although I'd be lying if I said all these posts don't sound exactly like the same complaints we longtime players had with DCUO slowly leaning further and further into pay walls/micro-transactions.

They get polled? (do we?) Do you have a Source? Is this an official poll or just a player asking random Japanese people in the servers?

Personally I find it hard to tell if they like it or not because there hasn't been a single topic in the JP forums about it - positive or negative.

from my understanding they are complaining the cost is too much (I/e you are not getting enough for 500 yen price tag) in other words this poster like more functions to meet a 500 yen value or reduce the cost down to say 200 yen.

I still find it disappointing as locking retainer UI management on a second sub is ridiculous

I really wish there were a dedicated live letter folder or something, to filter out these topics that just seem out of nowhere if you don't keep up with the latest news.

Yeah, but with microtransactions do you even realize how bad it can get? People easily drop $300 a month on that kind of stuff. What if 100 moogle coins = $1USD and it costs 50 moogle coins to update the price/list 1 product? Then just to update the price of 9 retainers would cost $90 ...for one day. This is an extreme example but honestly it could be that bad. Especially because they said they're limiting the kupo nuts to "protect the game economy". You cool with that?

Then the next thing you will inevitably say "well you don't have to pay for it", ok. But then you're paying $5 to barely be able to use a core feature of the app. Sounds....fair?

Oh and also I hope you realize that the chat feature, according from what I can tell, doesn't even allow you to chat with people in-game. You both have to be using the app. Might as well use discord.

By all means show your displeasure, but the game isn't getting worse for it. They're locking nothing we used to be able to do behind a paywall, just adding an option to manage it a different way. As always there's some doom and gloom following a dis-favorable change but I'm just going to keep playing the way I always have until I actually am not having fun.

I don't like what the app ended up being, but that just means I wont use it the same way I don't use skip pots.

If, there is no point talking about ifs if they aren't even close to occurring. Trying to suggest a gacha system would be in this game is just adding unnecessary drama to the situation.

At the same point what would the gacha be? Like what if the gacha was something for the app itself that allowed people who buy into it to customize their app. Would you have a problem with it? It affects the game in no way and just allows the app user to augment their experience with the app.

As for the whole Market-board issue, who honestly cares so people will throw money, reducing the price of items, just to sell it, meanwhile someone online can just lower the price with no issue. In what context do these mog coins actually serve as an advantage to the player?

Think about it, so I'm on break and what I"m going to spend 5 dollars just to force lower my price in hope it sells meanwhile a person online just keeps lowering the price? It makes no sense. I can just wait til I get home, lower the price and then wait as needed. The gimmick of being able to sell/resell items is not an advantage at all. In the grand scheme of things this isn't a benefit unless people are that desperate to make an extra 1mil gil or whatever it is.

And even from the other spectrum, if the gimmick allows one to buy products off the Marketboard and 1 item per coin, that isn't a big benefit either but it does help a lot of people. Say they are on break and want to see if an item they want is on the marketboard, they can buy it in case it were to sell when they log on. In that context the coins are nice however you wouldn't need 60 coins a month to buy/sell junk if their current trade in rate is 1:1.

I will however admit that it is a bit of a letdown to have 5 dollars be required to double saddlebag, that is a lot of inventory space to stockpile items but as others have said you might as well get a retainer at that point so the overall benefits aren't that big in terms of inventory it's just another incentive to pay into the 5/month.

We need to think ahead, though. If you just wait until it happens then it's probably too late. Other SE mobile games have gacha and I could easily see it being implemented for exclusive glamours. Sure you can say "OPTIONAL!!! So no big deal honestly" but personally I don't want to see great glamours stuck behind not only a pay wall but a pay wall + RNG. And I really don't think it above SE to do this.

Yes, I'm being drastic here. But the whole point I'm making is that this is likely only them testing the waters and seeing how many people will pay before they go on to do more cash grabs. And mind, I'm not even opposed to the cash shop (I buy a lot of stuff from it AND I DO have extra retainers). I get it, extra revenue is good for the company. That's fine. But where do we draw the line? Micro-transactions is a very dangerous place to go, imo. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they won't go much further with it - even if that's the case though, showing you're unhappy with it doesn't hurt anything right?

And I don't think it's unreasonable to be upset, either. We all pay a sub, so it can be frustrating if more and more items/features get released as "optional" items that we would like to experience. When it feels like all of the best things are reserved for those who pay extra, it's a bit questionable. Why even have a sub at that point if literally all the best things are not covered by that sub? And I'm not just saying that because I'm personally salty I can't afford these things. Like I said, I buy a lot. But I know people who can barely afford the base sub. It feels really dirty that they shell out the cash for a sub every month yet they constantly get left out of really great items. The cash shop is growing at an alarming rate. But at least I can buy gifts for them of what they really want, but things like this app? I couldn't possibly.

No, I was suggesting a folder for discussing live letters. Because general discussion tends to get flooded every time these come out, and if you don't keep up with them, it's all a bit much. I'd suggest one catch-all thread, but I at least recognize there's multiple topics to discuss.

Everyone keeps asking if SE will notice the backlash. I kind of feel like you're a vocal minority, so no I wager they won't notice it. The NA forums have a few threads each with a few pages of the same handful of people crying doom and foul play.
It seems the rest don't care or support the idea.

Personally I'm for it. I can afford it if I want it and if I don't I frankly don't care if someone else does. I say add more to the mog station and bring on this app!
Facts are facts, if people didn't like the options that dlc, lockboxes, and paid extras offered then they'd never have become a thing. Turns out itd profitable because people pay and i imagine they do so because they want to.

Picket and protest all you like, your voice is a whisper here. I mean cmon, they don't even translate live letters here anymore. Who do you think is paying attention to this small smattering of discontent?

It only takes one person per server using this to full ability can run the MB on all valuable, rare, and semi rare items.

Yeah they are few in number, that is the problem, the competition on the MB is low in general, and the same reason why bots flourish like the cactuar situation.

I am not worried about a large number using this app, im worried about that one person that will fully exploit it.

Pardon me for maybe sound totally ignorant but how is this app pay-to-win if all you do is get MB privilege and extra retainer by using the premium version? Sure, you will get dibs on some items and maybe make more gil but how is having more gil than others really helping you win in game? :?

Do you know how much it costs to penta-meld gear? Millions. Penta-melded gear gives advantages for end game content. If people would be angry at them selling raid tier gear for a premium, why do people not care that people have better control over the market board if they pay a premium?

I'm really getting tired of how people basically say "screw you crafters". I worked hard to get my crafters up and I work hard to make stuff and I work hard to sell stuff. It definitely won't be fun for me when those few whales completely dominate the market board for the most valuable items. I've had it happen before and I promise you it's one of the most frustrating things as a crafter. I literally had to drop out and give up. These were bots, of course. But I don't really think it'll be any less frustrating from a real player who suddenly has 8 more hours in the day that they can constantly undercut with. Sure you have people who simply have no life and do it anyway and you have bots. But I don't want to add to it.

But at this point, I doubt anything I say will make a difference. Lets just all enable SE to keep sucking the money from our wallets / taking our sub money and giving us the lowest amount in return as possible while giving all the best stuff to whales. That's cool.

There is no way to "win" in an MMO, because it's not a race. Rather than arguing the meaning of words it would be more fruitful for people to discuss whether the business model of offering game play altering things in the cash shop is appropriate when we already pay a sub fee, because that is the spirit of all the "P2W" complaints.

My stance is that if it's not cosmetic, it's too far. More item storage space, more simultaneous ventures, more MB slots, mount speed increases, job boosts, retainer job boosts, story skip, in game currencies and non-cosmetic in game items are examples of things that shouldn't be sold with real money in a subscription game IMO.

The reason why I have this stance is because the sub model has in my experience ensured a certain degree of fairness among customers. If the sub model no longer does that then there is no point in paying it anymore, because I can get the experience of being left behind in any F2P game.

Paid expansions? I can get behind that.
Optional extras on mog station (as in clothes, fantasia, etc)? Getting a bit excessive these days I won't lie, but not inherently wrong.
Charging extra to access a basic UI feature (moving items between bank tabs)? No, just no. That is wrong and spits on all your playerbase.

As for if people didn't like things like lockboxes they'd never have become a thing? See EA, and that new Star Wars game. People kicked up an almighty stink. It got backtracked. They became a thing because companies wanted more money (which is fair enough on their part). Notice a lot of people don't have an issue with DLC or even optional extras dependent on how they're done. DLC for a new expansion pack offering up a whole new world? Yep, most people are OK with that. Extra charges for thing like server transfers? Yep, that's fine (changing appearance is a bit touch and go, but most people are OK with that still).

Most people are only going to pay because they feel they have to. Not because they want to. Or if they can't, they're gonna quit.

This and several other reasons is why I already dropped sub. Im done with FFXIV and SE altogether. I think I'll go play Ni No Kuni 2 which btw looks like a lot of fun. I absolutely love Level 5 games... my all time fave was White Knight Chronicles 2 online.... I really miss that game.... any who FFXIV is pretty much going F2P soon enough. I might as well pack my bags now and jump ship before the storm hits.
