will combos stand the test of time?

The one game design flaw that stands out most to me with combos is the amount of slots it takes up on your action bar. One combo is generally = to one WS pre combos. That being said we now need 8 ws to = what would have been 3 before. Now we have to add jobs to that. More slots on the bar taken up. Unless jobs mean you cant cross class anymore our entire action bar will be filled on 1.21. Now that the action bar is filled we cant have a lvl cap increase without sacrificing cross class skills or adding more action bars.

Im just hoping that SE has fully planned for this since it is obviously gonna be a problem.

solutions:

add more action bars
allow removal of class actions(combos are dependent on position so you'd have to choose wisely, not to mention recast timers may really limit you)
eliminate cross class actions on jobs(not that i want this but i could see SE doing it)


my vote would be to extend the action bar or add a fixed bar for cross class ability's.

edit:added info: onthe 2.0 screen shot there is an action bar with a slightly smaller action bar over it. Im not sure what this means, but i wanted to check to see if the action bar was still just 10 slots wide.

It sounded like they were planning on doing either one of the first 2 sometime since they said mages would be getting more spells eventually. As far as Jobs go I think we will lose some cross-class slots and the job skills will take their place.

Jobs mean you can't cross-class anymore. Either that or the number you can will be greatly lowered. Jobs come with 5 skills anyway. I doubt we'll be able to cross class more than like 2 skills, though what I expect is losing the ability to cross-class completely while on a Job.

I hate the thought of losing cross-class functionality. IMO, that's what made the class system great, and it's being whittled away little by little.

To the OP: It is nice to see the rare occurrence of someone using the lost art of foresight. Thank you for that.

i was already thinking of making this post before. finding out that they were adding spells is what prompted me to finally make this thread because im curious to what direction they are gonna go with actions.

i think they mentioned making the action bar longer before. also they mentioned being able to set marcos to the action bar(not just the macro bar)im not sure if these ideas ever manifested past the thought process though.

Cross-classing isn't going anywhere. Only on Jobs do you have them limited, but that's the entire point. Jobs are specializations where you become adept at doing one thing, but have to rely on other team members for support in other areas.

The reason for my paranoia is understandable, I hope. With 1.20, the number of abilities we are able to cross class has dropped by no small margin. On top of that, a percentage of those still available to cross class have been stripped of their value to the point that it doesn't make sense to cross class them. How much further will they go to restrict classes to their own native abilities?

I like the idea of introducing jobs as a way to restrict people into certain party roles and reduce homogeneity, but I never felt that classes needed to be restricted as they have.

They will return the option of unequipping actions sooner or later. Not removing them would bring issues as the cap increase. About job cross-class actions, seems like (don't remember where i read this) the job will be able to use actions from both classes required to unlock it, like PLD requiring GLA30 MRD 15 would be able to cross-class MRD actions only...if this all confirms, at 50 we already will have 15 actions from class, 5 from job and 3 from cross-class, leaving us with 23 actions.

If not mistaken they said jobs will have an action quest every 5 levels, so if we get a cap raise of 5 levels we will learn 1 action from class and 1 action from job, already leaving us with 25 actions (26 if the cross class action happens to not be class-specific)...if we get a 10 lv cap raise, we will already reach the 29 slots. Even if we have no cross-class actions, with this mechanics we would be locked when cap reach 75 (would means another 5 class actions and 4 job actions, totaling 29).

So yeah, i do think soon enough they will return the option of unequipping actions...probably after adjusting the jobs.

I want more non-hotkey skill slots, like generally most MMOs now and before have/had 16-20 slots, about nine or ten slots that were set to react to buttons 1-0 and the same number of lots that were click-able only, with a game like FFXIV you can use a controller to 'select' a skill slot and use it so its not like these slots would be a pain to have.

If you look at the screenshot, you will clearly see that there are 6 bars.
Active bar has a yellow dot, and the 5 inactive are just dots.
So... we'll have twice and many slots when 2.0 happens.

But is it really helping anything? having to constantly cycle through bars? it might be just me, but i think more slots per bar would help so much more, but again i can see how that can be a disadvantage too, maybe its just preference.

I'd like to see the - and = key represented on the action bar thus allowing for 12 items per bar to be used. :)

As far as the issue that ws now are only as good in combos, I haven't seen that an issue, I've only seen it improve combat. :)

what i meant was you cant really take off just one ws because it requires a full combo to be affective. and some WS have huge cooldowns. So the problem with combos is the number of slots it requires to = what would have been only one slot before. Keeping in mind future lvl caps there will be 2 options. Add newer more awesome combos or add to the existing. Brand new combos would be an extra 2-3 slots for each one. Adding to the existing combos would mean we'd still have to do our lvl 1-50 moves just to perform our lvl 70 move.


i like combos as they are now, this thread is about how the current system doesn't seem to leave allot of room for expansion.

add: option c. with new lvl caps you go to the guild to upgrade your existing moves.(highly unlikely but could be interesting)

Sometimes all the confusion with jobs, classes, and actions I wish we just had a single class to play with out all the job switching. Just roll a new character if you want to switch jobs. I know that's not the way a FF-MMO is supposed to be but this stuff is just getting convoluted. :(
