It's Time for That Talk Again [Darkside Animation]

So, it's now been over 2 years since DRK's inception, and the general feeling among the community that the Darkside animation is severely underwhelming for what it is, especially compared to other "aura" effects for other jobs (such as DRG's BotD and WAR's Inner Release). And don't even get me started on how WAR gets glowing red eyes, while DRK doesn't get glowy orange eyes.

So I'm just wondering, can we please, please revisit the idea of getting an updated effect that isn't just little red streaks floating about your character?

TIL my eyes glow red as WAR on IR. Because I pay that much attention. (sarcasm)

Dude that was legitimately one of my favorite additions of this expansion. It looks awesome.

I would love the black flames that was in the initial reveal, but unless they completely reprogram how said effects are displayed on, amongst other things, mounts I'm afraid we won't be getting it. And you know how things go in reprogramming. Change one thing, affect ten others. With the time-constraints the FFXIV team most likely has, they're having to make choices. I can understand them putting this on the long-burner, if even that. :(

Wait, WAR eyes glow red in IR? I never noticed, was distracted by the giant red glowing aura that screams, "Come and die!" If WAR eyes do glow red that's cool.

Doesn't Darkside last forever? Like until you turn it off? It'd be unfair if Dark Knights got some cool animation for the entirety of the fight. It'd be like Warriors glowing red for the whole fight. Which would be cute, especially on my Lala.

Would be nice to have visual effects for other CDs though, that add the blue/black flames, or whatever, that blend into with Darkside's translucent canvas.

Like if DRK got a UI widget for stacks of Dark Arts - hence blue flames added while DA(s) is up, other flames or whatever during Blood Weapon / Price, Delirium (if it left a buff). Somewhat illustrates an issue facing DRK, where there isn't a whole lot stacking of multiple buffs compared to other jobs.

I remember the DRK reveal trailer had them get glowing red eyes instead of red cinnamon swirls. But eh whatever. And I remember then saying they would think about adding in a black smoke aura or some such like from the 50 quest but I guess they either forgot or flatout lied about that too.

Well, where's PLD's awesome aura-like thing?

The OP is complaining about a "lack-luster glow effect" when.... PLDs don't even get a glow or anything like that.

Where's our angel wings? Where's all the light that we're supposed to have? We don't have any of that.

Actually, both WAR and DRK have had permanent passive auras since their respective releases. WAR's aura becomes brighter as your gauge level increases, while DRK has a flickering red cloth effect to show that Darkside is active. Both are permanent. DRK's was originally brighter to make sure that the player knew that it was active, but was toned down because people felt that it was too intrusive. That being said, they've created a number of different in game auras for DRK which are NPC exclusive and are more visible without spanning most of the screen.

The community keeps asking about DRK's aura because the devs have consistently teased at it but not followed through. The original job actions reveal in HW showed a very different DRK aura that a lot of the playerbase liked:

Likewise, the job storyline for DRK features a different aura as well, also not available to the player, but available to NPCs.

It's worth noting that the glowing eye effect associated with Inner Release was historically a part of the original DRK questline, two years ago, but was simply ported over to WAR because it looks cool.

I wonder when they'll stop teasing with the lore and actually follow through with it. It's not like they actually need to create anything new, because several of these are already in game and have clearly been linked to DRK.

Instead of looking at the other tanks, I think a better way of wording this argument is that Darkside just looks obnoxious and bad. It looks like a placeholder effect from development and they never got around changing it.

Not to Um-Actually you, but it was part of the WAR quests before DRK was even a thing. S'what made it so cool to finally get it.
But yeah I still find their justifications silly, they should just let you use it regardless of presentation.

Maybe! I dunno, when I saw IR gave the effect I kind of expected DRK would get their pasty-flames back, and was surprised they didn't. I mean in a game that's so married to aesthetics, it seems weird not to prioritize things that complete the player's experience.

What about DRK nerfs? How do you justify that?

No nerfs! Not now, not never!

On a side note, I sort of reminded myself that maybe it's unfair to compare Darkside's effect with that of WAR's IR. And I'd be willing to leave it at that, if WAR didn't also have the wrath/abandon effect that also looks totally boss and is active most - if not all - of the time. I liked what someone earlier had said about NPCs getting their own unique glows, like Frey's during the early quests, or the same type of glow that Julyan Manderville had in that particular Hildebrand quest. I'd much rather see them ported over than continue on with the utter 'meh' that Darkside is.

They could make all effect disappear while mounted. Or Darkside only displays when the weapon is unsheathed, like the weapon glowing effects.

I would love to see the aura reworked. Since the unveiling of Dark Knight, this is one thing that really stood out.. but since the change right before launch it has felt very underwhelming. Black smoke would go a long way.

Warrior can't use infuriate in big cities anymore as they need an enemy. I think it's exclusive to Warrior and I think they did a good job! ^o^ Dark knight doesn't need a change in aura glow, it be an eyesore. *uses holmgang on hr statement* case closed.

Actually, after much practice, I've managed to tap into the true power of my darkside. I'll leave it to the rest of you to figure out how to do it for yourselves. Show the devs the darkside aura that you really want.

Paladins are about moderation, sobriety and such valors of knighthood.

I think it should be a visual effect if you use delirium during blood Price and blood weapon. They said it's to much stress in the servers and that PS3 limitations were not a factor on that

Honestly, I don't know why Darkside even exists at this point. All it does is make DRK annoying to look at with a red glow. Purple is a better choice, but better yet why not have the DRK get flames to reflect their Bloodgauge accumulation?

The excuse about flames looking bad while on mounts is silly, and furthermore they could just have the flames attach to our shoulders. Or give us an effect like Lakshmi.

How about we give you an annoying glow that basically does nothing while also making you lowest DPS and give DRK Passage of Arms.

That should be fair, right? :)

More darkness when darkside is active then...
*Dark Arts used* JET BLACK FIRE ROUND YOUR FEET (that is quite a bit on the market board)

So much edge i could cut the very edge with the edge.

I'd be fine with scrapping the darkside animation, some cool edgy black flames for dark arts or living dead would be pretty nice though.
