I'm a noob when it comes to ffxiv. I've owned the game for years, but never really played until this past month. Relatively new to the forums too, and I see a lot of posts , mostly seeming to do with the changes. And there are a ton of dps questions, almost a dead horse as it were.
The question two fold, is
#1 is what does DPS mean in the context of healing, I mean are we talking about a "holy" when applicable, and keeping relevant DOTs up? Or is their some meta that is expected where healers are to have full rotations to run while also keeping an extra eye on those in the party that need heals?
#2 Is it really that rare, or is this more of a "soapbox"moment for everyone who has that one story where all the healer did was heal, even when the tank was overgeared and both dps'ers didn't draw aggro, and stayed out of the "bad" ?
Is not dps'ing that rare?

Healer DPS means to me, doing some damaging skills while they have nothing else to do. It is not asking healers to toss their healing skills in the trash and focus only on DPS.
It is 50-50 for me. I have seen healers literally /follow the tank and go afk the entire dungeon because there is nothing to heal. I have seen healers do so much damage it puts some of the DPS to shame. It's honestly a toss up which one you will get when you DF.
The main argument is - why should the DPS and Tanks be expected to participate in 90-100% of the dungeon and perform reasonably well when healers (who have many, powerful DPS skills mind you) participate in 5-10% of the same dungeon and recieve the same rewards? -

As for #1. It's not as much of a rotations as a healer as it is throwing out dps when there isn't any need to heal. Mostly staying active instead of sitting on your thumbs.

I generally have a rotation I go through during a fight; but, depending on the situation and tank, quickly adjust depending on how fast he's going down.
Generally, I'll open with Aero III and then a holy, stoneskin the tank in the interim, holy, stoneskin/aero III/ again to do the initial damage again and refresh or get mobs I may have missed with the initial shot/Assize if it's up and I'm at around 1/2 my mp pool, holy one last time (stun no longer works) and heal/stone/DoT up the remaining mobs. It works for me in most groups and there's only a few I've had to readjust to depending on the tank or whether the AoE damage of the group is terribad and I need to watch my MP as the fight goes on longer. -

You are playing ACN so I assume that you are wanting to heal as SCH. SCH is a bit different to the other two healers when it comes to DPS because you have a fairy to support your healing and DPS skills that's support your healing. Don't worry so much if you can't, but SCH has many ways to create opportunities in which they don't have to heal and people use that as a chance to do extra DPS.
General rule of thumb: you don't have to be a pro MLG high DPS healer for people to be happy with your performance, so long as you have some awareness of when your party is taking damage and when you have downtime. You should learn your toolkit and find the skills which give you downtime (regen, aspects benefic, rouse), and at least weave in some sort of DPS just so you aren't idling, because it's the idling that people notice, not your damage numbers -

#1 Not sure about high-end raiding, but it mostly refers to healers throwing in some damage when there isn't any healing to do, which is mostly in high-level dungeons where everyone is over-geared. For example, on WHM, and with a decent tank, I can almost heal a dungeon on regen alone (so 1-2 abilities every ~20 seconds)*, and spend most of the rest of the time doing DPS (though MP is generally a limitation on going 'all-out' for every pull).
#2 Haven't noticed it too often, though it does happen, but I feel like the 'outrage' is more about a 'lazy' healer making each pull, and the dungeon, feel (and take) significantly longer, than it is about the frequency of the occurrence.
* Note: This is with doing damage, which not only greatly shortens the time a tank is taking damage (especially without cooldowns on), but also includes ~6 seconds of AoE Stun from Holy. Without doing damage I would actually have to do more healing ^_^ -

Healer play in dungeon context is mostly about 1. putting regen (not available for SCH) and other buffs up on tank, 2. putting DoTs up on monsters (if SCH that's Bio II + Miasma + Bio + Miasma II and Shadowflare, for WHM it's just Aero III) / using your AoE DPS spell (Holy for WHM, Gravity for AST), and 3. when needed, hitting the tank with instant heal (Lustrate / Tetra / Essential Dignity), refreshing regen, using a heal if needed, and 4. getting back to DPS. This is it (in a simplified form) and it's not rocket science. :) As SCH, you won't be able to regen tank (outside Whispering Dawn when using Eos), but you can keep manually casting Embrace on tank while you're using your DPS skills.Quote:

In the case of SCH... most is fire and forget.
You DoT something (then BANE it if multiple targets), and then let them run their course. Unlike the Summoner you don't have much to throw on top of it, so its a lot sneakier and no one can tell if you are, other than that the Mobs drop quicker, because DoTs don't show up in the combat logs only in certain parcers, you can only see them if you're standing next to the mob and watching them tick away.
Usually SCH will Galvanize the tank, and then heal him quick, then throw out some DoTs and Bane them.... or use either Broil or Ruin 2 on the Boss mob on occasion.
Its not critical really, only helpful. And most healers only do it in their spare time.
In Raid instances the damage comes in so hot and heavy that they forgo it unless the Raid DPS is so low.
But there's a catch to that. If the Raid Damage is low because they spent their time DPSing rather than healing, so a lot of DPS actually died...then it was more because they failed at their primary job of healing... rather than them failing to DPS. -

If you are 100% healing then you are overhealing about 75% of the time, which is completely useless to the party. Depends on the situation really.
Given your inexperience, I'd argue no, as long as you're doing a good job of the healing and not causing issues, I personally wouldn't have a problem with it. However, if I was running with you regularly, I would expect some form of improvement over time. Being cautious and studying mechanics is pretty much how I play when I'm learning new savage content, that doesn't fly down the line when it's been on farm for 6 months though.
Do note that the confirmed changes for 4.0 point to it being a lot easier to simply throw out dots whilst still playing it safe though. Please look forward to it, I certainly am <3 -

The thing is... in this game : our heals are VERY powerful, so powerful that regen sometimes alone keep our party alive. It makes part of our job to understand how strong our heals are and what to use for each mechanic. -

You will eventually learn that there's very little healing requirements in dungeons, and if you do zero DPS, you will find yourself idling or running around with nothing to do for about 70% of the time, or even less. Even more so with Scholar and the fairy auto-healing on her own.
There's just a few dungeons pre lvl 50 that actually require lots of healing (Totorak, Aurum Vale and Stone Vigil come to mind, with some Cutter's Cry thrown in there). These are more about teaching healers how to optimize their healing: Totorak happens after WHM and AST get Esuna, Stone Vigil happens after most of the powerful regens, and Aurum Vale is almost level 50 so you have a lot of tools at your disposal by then save for the last class and job skills.
My advice is: try it out. DPSing, I mean. And let your tank and party know that you're new to it and not 100% confident on it or haven't grasped it quite yet. Depending on the dungeon, the threshold onto which you can let the tank drop may be lower than in others -I've let tanks drop to less than 200 HP in some very low level dungeons before tossing Essential Dignity, which literally fills their HP back to 100% with an instant cast (this is an Astrologian skill). Some newbie tanks are really scared by it, so I always try to reassure them saying I won't let them die. Other times, caster DPS with Physick cross-classed will start to panic heal the tank too, so I have to reassure those as well. Some of the times they listen, some others they don't.
In the end, you're the one that will know what are your comfort limits for DPSing and when is enough to stop and go back to healing the tank, so just mess around with it and see how you like it. SCH in particular is a little bit tricky at first, but give it a try: let your fairy do all the healing through pulls. You'll notice that she's very capable of doing it alone at lower levels. If you see her struggling, have her use Whispering Dawn and try it out again. Eos has really powerful healing tools at her disposal, and she's gonna keep on healing by herself even if you're not ordering her to or if you're healing as well. Familiarize yourself with your fairy's healing capability and then you'll realize why it's so easy to DPS as Scholar.
This also helps a lot, since Scholar is one of the job that gets powerful AoE spells very early in the game. As early as lvl 30, iirc. This way, a SCH spreading their DoTs will make every dungeon run exponentially faster. Specially when you happen to get two melee DPS through duty finder, as most of them don't get their AoEs well into level 45 or so.
However, a lot of this is likely changing come Stormblood, though it definitely looks like healer DPS will be much, much easier to do. -

The reason why some people get mad at healers not dpsing in dungeons is that healing in dungeons is very, very easy, even more so if party members are decently equipped. Actually, it is borderline boring. If you're just healing in a dungeon, you're either being lazy or scared. Whatever the case is, you're definitely playing suboptimally. You're wasting time if you're just idling and "paying attention to mechanics" (other party members must pay attention to mechanics as well while maximizing their dps), or wasting mana if you're overhealing. You're not putting any effort in the game and you're probably using 3 out of 20+ skills the game has provided you with. If all party members were to put minimal effort while playing, clearing a dungeon would probably take almost 1 hour. Tanks would pull only 1 mob at a time because aoe rotation is so hard (sarcasm), dps whould just spam 1 single attack because who cares, they're still dealing damage, so they're doing their job, right?
All in all, healers refusing to dps are just trapped in the (wrong) mindset that they should just do the bare minimum required from their role while the rest of the party does the job for them. Because, as many people said before, you can literally complete an expert dungeon letting your fairy do all the healing if your a sch, or casting diurnal aspected benefic on the tank once every 20 seconds if you're an ast (+ the occasional aoe heal). -

But no matter what other people say about DPS.
Your first, main and only concern should be : healing
If you know the fight, know the downtime, know you have nothing to do for the next few seconds, and feel comfortable about it regarding the state of your mana, you can and arguably should throw some dots.
If you are not comfortable with stopping healing because you don't know the fight, aren't sure about downtime or just don't feel like you can afford loosing 1-2 global cooldown on the boss. Do NOT do it.
If someone dies because you were dpsing (I mean, they died from a lack of healing, not from standing in a instant death aoe marker), you'll never be able to do enough dps to overcome the dps lost by this death, even if he you rez him assap.
So, if you are "noob" as you pointed. Do not do it.
If someone complain "healer can you dps", reply that you don't feel like you know the fight enough to do so.
In any case, it has been confirmed that fight are balanced around healers doing 0 damage. Which means that if your group cannot pass dps check, it is not your fault. It's the dps not dpsing enough.
If your group keep failing a dps check by a few % (like, 1-2), your dots and dps can definitely help. If they fail by 10-15%, unless you simply stop healing there's no way your few dots and broils will help.
Your job, above all, is to heal and do mechanics. -

Savage fights have been balanced to players doing them with higher item level that is available for them when the content is released and with DD players performing close to their optimal potency. So a pair of healers who won't DPS in Savage would need to have the rest of their party overgeared and demand their DD players to do a top notch performance - while the healers themselves would be slacking. Yes, your job as a healer is to heal and do mechanics, but also to contribute as much as you can to the party, which is something every one of your other party members is doing at all times. This is not "toxic community meta," it's an objective analysis that is even supported by the game's Hall of the Novice and the availability of so many DPS spells in the healers' toolkits.
If, as a healer, you refuse to look for DPS opportunities, or don't create them for yourself; or even worse, refuse to DPS at all, then you have not the right to complain about DPS that don't put out decent/good damage, or about tanks not mitigating or positioning well, or about any other kind of mediocre playstyle, since you yourself are perpetrating one. -

0 dps healers bug the heck out of me, since they're either standing there picking their noses until they actually need to heal that one needed time every 20s, or they're spamming cures over and over resulting in a lot of overhealing. It just irks me how incredibly inefficient and/or phoned in it is.
As long as I see some dps numbers on a healer then I'm happy. High ones are great obviously, and I personally strive for this, but healer dps numbers rely heavily on how the other members do their jobs since it makes a big difference how much healing you might have to do if people aren't avoiding aoe's or how geared they are. Even in the worst case scenario and you're only accounting for 3-5% of the run's damage output that means that you were at least putting in an effort and that's all that really matters. -

We should all stop telling new healers that they shouldn't DPS until they feel safe, because as content gets harder they're never gonna feel safe, and telling them the world will end if they accidentally let the tank die because of Cleric Stance will just intimidate them and keep them from trying to DPS altogether. We should stop doing this even more so now that Cleric Stance is a thing of the past!
Remember that the first dungeons a healer will see will be Sastasha, Tam Tara and Copperbell Mines. All of those are incredibly easy to DPS through as a healer. Some of the smaller pulls don't need a single cast of Cure or Benefic to keep the tank alive. These are the perfect places to teach healers that yes, there is a lot of downtime, and they can use these downtime to speed up the mob killing.
I got a newbie healer on Sastasha today who was casting Stone without Cleric on. At first I asked if she was new and when she confirmed it, I offered that she could ask me or my friends anything, and we could just stop for a bit and explain it (the tank was a friend of mine too, so there was no prob with that). After a while I asked her if she knew what Cleric Stance did, and she seemed intimidated by the idea that healing was hurt by using it, but I explained that 5 secs was just two casts of Stone and she could probably get much more before having to turn it off and safely heal the tank. She started DPSing afterwards, even though my friend was doing two pulls at once every time.
I told her that maybe she'd end up accidentally killing a tank one day, but it was all part of the learning process to balance healer DPS and healing needed, and she was very open about learning this and seemed eager to "not suck," to quote her words. This is what we should be pushing for when we find new healers: encourage them to explore all the tools in their job, we should [b]not[/i] intimidate them and impose artificial barriers on their skill and learning curve.
Sorry if I came off a little aggressive, Sylvain, that wasn't my intention, but teaching newer players how to play the game is something I'm very adamant about. -

I watch Xenosys' stream, which is notorious for "bullying" yet the only time chat makes fun of healers is when they're doing nothing. 300 DPS in A12S? Won't hear a peep about it. DPS/Tank taking unnecessary damage? They're mocking them not the healer. New healer? They're more likely to offer advice, especially if said player is forthcoming. These are raiders. The idea people demand everything and the kitchen sink from healers is simply an excuse because it's easier to blame everyone else than admit you're just being lazy.Quote:

Very few people I've pugged with have ever gotten frustrated when I overestimated a large pull or Benediction misfired. I'll just quickly apologize and adjust. The reason I emphasise this is because once you get over the initial anxiety many have tanking or healing, it'll feel much more natural letting the tank's HP drop. A good rule of thumb is to cast heals outside the dungeon. What you heal for is your threshold. Say it's 1,000 and the tank has 2,000 HP. You now know that allowing him to dip below 1,000 is easily recoverable because you heal for that much in one ability. What I recommend is playing to your gut while still pushing yourself. Don't be afraid to drop Cleric early and heal even if it's an overheal. You are still learning, after all. At the same time though, push yourself. Those last couple dungeons went well and you felt you didn't need to baby the tank? Next time, let them drop lower and "risk it," so to speak. The more you take the approach, the easier you'll find DPSing.
As for how frequent heal only healer happens? Far more than it should at higher level content. I won't ever pick at new healers or leveling, but it does get a little irksome when you're in an Expert with a mentor healer who can't be bothered to cast Holy.
I cannot emphasise this enough. I've found it much easier teaching less experienced healers how to DPS or to take chances than more seasoned ones who only want to heal. Why? People are naturally set in their ways more often than not. A lot don't want to deviate from "what works" even if they can't seem to appreciate it things only worked because everyone else made up for their lack of contribution.Quote:
