Hmmm, looks like someone needs to get out more.
I think it's a bit mean-spirited to be honest. I'm on PS4 - the PS3 version is objectively terrible to play on anyway - but I played the PS2 version of FFXI from its year of release to the year it ended service and the constant clamouring for me to leave the game made me never visit its forums. With FFXIV, the console gamers who were signed up for the beta from its initial announcement already missed out on the whole of 1.x and have had to endure years of barbs and criticism from privileged people who think their own hunger for better textures and features trumps the right of others to play the game at all. Even though there's no evidence those better features are coming, or that the majority of them are even being held back due to the PS3 in the first place.
Even though the actual problem now is obviously going to be old PCs (32-bit setups, graphics drivers as explicitly cited by YoshiP in interviews) I just know that 'PS4 limitations' is going to be the new refrain from people too ignorant to concede that not everyone on Windows is running a tricked out gaming box (or that many limitations are related to servers/network considerations). Even though my PS4 is a million times better as a gaming machine than my PC, I'm preparing to hear the whining once again.
I support the end of PS3 service in this case, but I think the community reaction to the announcement is utterly mean-spirited.
I'm glad. Consoles bring the game down a lot. PC users can't have addons etc. At least PC users can upgrade graphics.
I've a PC that is getting old and now barely keeps pace at low settings, and any "upgrade" worth of that name, means just buy a new rig gtx equipped, and give out about 2k $ for it.
A ps4 is just 200$ and run the game fine, SB too. This is the reason I decided to "upgrade" to a console rather than throw 2k $ to a pc just to play a single game. That's the reason I will be able continue to play XIV, when it comes SB, because when it comes, I'm quite sure my PC is not prepared.
On my case, consoles let me continue to play.
2K? I am running a 670 video card with everything on max. PC is worth about 5-700 bucks. And guess what. I can do a WHOLE lot more on it than a console. PC users are deprived of a lot of amenities because it has to stay toned down for console users. I'm not necessarily debating PC vs. Console. Just saying the game could be a whole lot more if it went PC only. My biggest complaint is not being able to use addons. UI changes, scrolling combat text things like WoW has.
For some people, the end of PS3 support means the end of FFXIV for them. Upgrading to a PS4 simply costs more than they can afford, at least if they don't take a long period out from their subscriptions to save up. That's why the developers are so sensitive when they bring the topic up and politely ask people to do their best to upgrade, and why they politely beg people to move from 32-bit PC systems to modern ones instead of cutting out what amounts to being the majority of PC gamers in entire regions.
While I hope that the majority of people will be able to continue playing, please understand that you come across very poorly celebrating in other people's misery in order to obtain benefits for yourself which probably don't even exist in any tangible form. 1.0 was PC-only and look how brilliant that was, and at how many mods you guys had. Oh, wait.
You say you want it to be more like WoW - yet you can just go ahead and play WoW. What other similar choices do console gamers have for an MMO? FFXIV looks amazing and plays amazingly on PS4, so all of this blind console hating is inappropriate.
I know that empathy is difficult but it's really not a bad skill to nourish. When I quit FFXI due to the end of PS2 support, my entire linkshell quit with me even though I was the only person not on PC. A substantial drop in subscriptions actively detriments the playing experience, even for self-centred people.
Brace yourselves...
"PS4 limitations" is coming
Well I hope he will address the hairstyle and outfit clipping, which he claimed once PS3 is out, this could be looked into more.
Well said. Hear hear!
Brace yourselves now? This has been happening on for two to 3 years now, it's just the PS3 hatred overshadowed it. It comes down to a small and vocal section of the PC gaming community who pour scorn on console gamers, no matter what happens. I honestly suspect that many PC gamers with more ordinary gaming rigs would rather those people shut up, but wisely remain silent since for now the barbs are aimed at someone else.
Whether console or PC, things become obsolete over time - you will need to invest in upgrades if you consider staying with a game over the long-haul.
While I'm definitely on the side of PC master race argument, give a little love to your console brethren- they still help support a game you enjoy playing, too.
You need also notice you will lose all console players if the game went PC only. That is not an irrelevant source of money for game development.Quote:

And making it playable only on gaming rigs over a given spec, didn't done better. SE learnt the lesson the hard way, when it released a game playable only on ultimate gaming rigs. They "discovered" not so much people have that kind of machines and XIV 1.0 was a complete fiasco, I went at that times in beta and it was simply unplayable. Unless you like playing at 1 frame per minute.
PC players should still be given an option for higher res settings, I paid good money for my PC I want to be able to use it to its full potential. Im sorry others can't but thats not my problem. Im not saying take the game away from them but PC players should be given better options/settings for things. The ps3 has run its course and it sucks but at least SE is/has given ample time for players to move to the ps4 which I think is pretty great.
Textures have literally nothing to do with PS3 support, or PS4 support, or console support in general. FFXI was able to release a texture boost for PC while PS2 users still had the old textures because all that was needed was to replace the texture files in the Windows client. It's trivial, technically, but the problem is that actually creating all of the upgraded textures takes a lot of time (time, as in money).
Kindly direct your energy there instead of associating the lack of upgraded textures with a completely irrelevant scapegoat like console users ;)
Sorry for being crabby but it's been years of ill-deserved persecution at this point. The guy who admits he has only been playing the game for five weeks telling half the playerbase to uninstall so that he can have a clone of WoW's floating combat text (who cares?) really gets my goat.
I know graphical settings isn't because of the ps3 since we got dx11 support. The thing is Yoshi has this obsession with making everyone equal regardless which is kind of annoying. If a PC can handle beefier features they should have access to them but then the console players will feel left out and complain, but honestly they shouldn't really be complaining. This is one of the many reasons why people blame ps3 a lot of the time.
I'm not seeing anything positive coming from this.
A MENTOR STOLE MY PS3 STORMBLOOD ACCESS
Except that the people complaining are always the PC users even when it's the console users who are left out. We don't get to see the benchmarks, we don't get easy access to backing up and other niceties, we don't get to take lovely 4k screenshots of our characters reclining on the beach in Mist, but if I was to trawl the forums and tally complaints I would wager that moaning about console users vastly, vastly outweighs this non-existent moaning from console users about how the PC platform has certain advantages over consoles.
I seriously cannot remember a single thread about PS3 (or PS4) users complaining that the graphics can look better on high end PCs. We are too busy playing the game to fuss that our shadows aren't as shadowy as other shadows.
There's always going to be a bottom of the barrel. Technology goes, no need to be sappy with defending those innocent PS3 players. Sucks yeah, but it's not a new concept to have to upgrade to keep up by any stretch of the word.
Let me guess, "it's a harsh world, deal with it?" The fact is the reason it's a harsh place it attitudes like yours and others in this topic. A little more compassion and civility would make a big difference.
::readies for incoming sniping about "SJWs", "care bears", "safe spaces" and other bilge::
WoW is PC only, and yet graphically it looks like garbage next to FFXIV. Frankly; graphics and inventory space aren't what appeals to me about this game, and atm it's personally been set aside in favor of Breath of the Wild for the time being (a game with technically simpler graphics on hardware inferior to the PS4). Heck, I had more fun playing FFXI on the 360 than I did my then still superior PC at the time.
So despite my pc running a gtx1070 and 16gb of ram, I can't say you'd ever find me in the "PC Only" camp.
I don't care what platform somebody runs. The decision as to when you drop support is not an easy one. As a designer/developer you would like to take advantage of the latest and greatest hardware or software. However you have to stay in sync with your subscribed install base which typically lags the current technology by quite a bit. The result is compromises usually at the cost of the latest technology. At some point the install base of aged systems becomes small enough that you can drop support and exploit newer system functions. In the end though it all comes down to revenue. While I'd like to see a native Linux client I'm sure the money isn't there. Likewise I'm sure there is a significant chunk of revenue to be made in the console market which if ignored would make for a much less engaging game for those of us on the PC due to less money for development.
The "pc master race" people are just upset that SE won't let them mod their client so they lash out at the console players. Even if it was PC only I doubt they would go back to 1.0 style graphics, which only the very top end PC could play. Like someone posted earlier most people probably have average-decent computer and a top end PC.
I know thats why I'm trying to say I understand that because I was one of those people until I realized it wasn't the ps3 but SE themselves. I will never justify taking away from a group of people, but I think its not right to not allow others with the ability to reach certain specs to be able too. I know many players on the ps4 I would hate to lose them.
PC is objectively the superior gaming platform. I hardly ever mod games and I still can say this, as a former console gamer at that. Consoles quite simply lack the modularity and performance potential that PCs have.
PS3 was just the biggest evidence of this at this time. That's why people are happy to see support for it go. It was holding back the game's growth. Even a low end PC that would've been considered low end when it was built in 2010 for example has better performance than a PS3.
You're free to game on whatever you like to game on of course, but if there's any time and place for PC players to voice their "PC master race" feelings, it's on a cross-platform game where their experience is only limited by outdated console hardware.
That's arguably superior marketing. Saying a console is a better platform because it has exclusives is just absurd. Consoles do have a better corporate money making scheme behind them though, I will agree there. And controllers can be used on PC so that point is irrelevant.
Can a console have its hardware swapped out and updated? No, not without using workarounds that jeopardize stability. Can a brand new console surpass or even match the graphics and features of a brand new PC built at the same time? If the game has decent optimization on both, nope. In most cases, a decent PC will have superior performance to new consoles for at least 1 generation actually.
I played PS3 for like a year and I can confirm it's as terrible as people make it out to be.
The game chugged doing pretty much anything. Low frame rates all around.
Load screens were long. 30s was the norm for even dungeons.
It could only display a few player characters on screen simultaneously. (Like 12 outside the 24 man raids) Making even highly populated areas feel barren.
In populated areas, npcs had trouble loading. It was a pain to get an npc to load when there were a bunch of people surrounding them.
In boss fate zergs, the boss would not load at all. You'd see a swarm of people attacking an invisible enemy while you had no way to get credit.
In fights like Ttian Extreme, it always felt like aoes weren't appearing as soon as they should. Giving you next to no time to dodge them.
I cannot even imagine how PS3 runs Heavensward content. It could barely handle ARR content.
That's not what I said, and not quite what I mean. There are many games that will not appear on PC, but do appear on multiple consoles. Generally AAA titles appear on both types of platform, but there are a lot of games that do not, and will not appear on PC but are on console, or are on PC and will never be on console. Yes, controllers work on PCs, that's not at issue, though Windows has never liked my handy dandy DS4 controller particularly well...
Yes, I can replace the HDD with an SSD, and even add an external HDD now. I can upgrade to motion controls and VR if I want, and now I can upgrade to a better GPU/CPU without changing my games or peripherals. I get your point about modular PC design, but objectively speaking, the only thing you're really talking about there is replacing the GPU.Quote:

There are a lot of qualifiers in that statement. If you take it back to the technology, there is a fair argument for the CellBE being considerably more powerful than x86 designs of the time. But the point is that when comparing any closed box solution to a bespoke solution, the bespoke solution always has the advantage of cherry picking the latest stuff on the market. On the other hand, average gamers with average wallets don't cherry pick in that manner.
If you're gaming on a 1080 60Hz screen, why do you need the latest and greatest gaming rig? Instead of spending the money on hardware, spend it on games.
PS3 released in 2006....
