The Legend of Wyvern

We've heard it all before and I'm aware of that; but give me a chance.

As you all know, Dragoon is coming and one hot topic is whether or not Wyverns should be included. There are many valid reasons to having a pet dragon by your side. Equally so, there are also many valid reasons to not having them at all. I acknowledge that.

My proposal is simply thus: Let the player have the option to decide individually whether or not they want a Wyvern pet by their side.

The breakdown:
Pet Wyvern: Reduced Dragoon Stats to make up for there now being an additional entity to your team.
No Pet Wyvern: Normal Dragoon Stats. Maybe throw in some nice Weapon Skills or other benefits only available to Dragoons who currently have their Wyvern dismissed.

For those of you that don't want anything to do with a pet Wyvern for any reason, you would have the option to do so, resulting in a respectively stronger Dragoon than say another player who has their Wyvern by their side and the addition of some flashy and useful Weapon Skills or abilities that are only usable when your Wyvern in dismissed.

For those of you that would love to have a pet Wyvern by your side, you would have your character's strengths and weaknesses adjusted appropriately and fairly while having your pet Wyvern out fighting along side of you and possibly being able to use various breath attacks to aid you in your battles!

Both options can be very useful depending on your circumstance and this way you're bound to have some fun!

Furthermore, I think it best to have a menu-based toggle to summon or dismiss your pet Wyvern at any time as opposed to making a permanent decision at the beginning of your adventures as a Dragoon and later regretting it. I'm sure there are some indecisive people out there who would appreciate this, I being one of them. Or maybe you just prefer one way over the other for specific instance.

Which brings up another point. With this implemented, a player could decide to go solo and bring out their buddy so they aren't as lonely. Likewise they could join a party and decide to dismiss their Wyvern to respectfully adjust their strengths if the situation called for it.

Thus being so, Dragoon can be a vastly more exciting class to play as with such features. The player could name their Wyvern friend anything they desire and even have some back-story to them such as their history, where they came from or even just a nice cinema of you and your Wyvern as you two first encounter each other and allying to take on the conflict of Eorzea together!

Either way, I think it's important for the player to have all the options they can get as it would only add more to the game and in the end make for a happy customer.

What are your thoughts? Opinions? Questions, comments or concerns? I only ask to leave your ignorance at the door and talk seriously as I'm not here to waste anyone's time. So I ask of you kindly, please don't merely respond with anything along the lines of "wyverns are stupid".

Doesn't fit in the lore. In this game, Dragoons are chocobo-riding, and kills anything with scales, 2 wings and more than 2 feet.

I really don't remember about Dragoon specifically, but, in terms of lore, Ishgard is on an active war against Dragonkin, their knights use chocobos to go to war. I will accept the lore can be arrange in some ways, but going from blatantly open war against Dragons to have them as pets? I don't know.

Lastly, in terms of development costs and resources, which I will not claim to know much about, but definitely sounds like balancing two classes for the cost of one, creating and adding new WS's, maybe creating two sets of armour and weapons for Dragoons with wyvern out or not, etc.

Brought this point up in another thread, Dragoon is not the the jobs true name. It was originally called Dragon Knight, it is still named as such in Japan. The Dragoon name was used outside of Japan because of localization issues. Any actual real historical fact behind the Dragoon name, does not apply for the back story of Dragon Knight. SE has never changed the lore behind Dragon Knight ,be it old or new games in the Final fantasy series.
Yes Ishgard is at war with dragons, and they have mounted calvary dragoons (which are what real dragoons are); But has anyone stop to think about the one outstanding fact? that these guys are not SE's Dragon Knight,that they are just simple military men. Heck SE even tried to bring the Dragon Knight job name to countries outside of Japan as the games progressed. Freya Crescent is an example of this attempt her designation in Final Fantasy 9 is Dragon Knight, but I guess people where to used to the Dragoon name so SE left it alone.
Don't get get me wrong I don't care one way or the other about the wyvern. I just hate how the Dragoon(Dragon Knight) lore is getting ripped apart, and whole parts of it ignored in these threads just to twist it to fit their arguments.

My reasons are entwined with previous Final Fantasy titles. A dragoon to me is a knight with a spear that has long range and can jump. A little pet wyvern does not fit with the vision I have of them.

It is personal opinion of course. You like them, I don't.

The first introduction of dragoon was Rikard in ff II. The lore in that game paired dragoons and wyvers together. Only problem was that all wyverns except 1 was dead.

I understand the development costs may be a problem, but I'm still stuck on the lore bit. Judging by the chat log in your signature I'm guessing you're familiar with XI's take on a Wyvern pet for Dragoon. What is your opinion on that?

Thanks for the elaboration. I see your side of this and you're right; it's true that a Dragoon is a knight with a spear who can jump, note Kain, but at the same time I grew fond of having a pet Wyvern in XI to accompany me in my travels. I would love to see this in XIV as well.

Who's to say a Dragoon never managed to tame one of his mortal enemy and use them to fight against them together? Sounds like a good twist!

Thanks for bringing that up, I forgot to mention it. It seems like having a Wyvern by your side is far from something new to Final Fantasy.

Although I never played the class pass level 20, I am familar with XI's Dragoon job. In terms of balancing I remember the developers having a hard time with it. The task can certainly be done but I'm more inclined to a full fledge class or job that does not rely on the strenght of a pet for his antics =/

I don't know, I still feel there's a lot of potential in this topic. Maybe have an optional quest for Dragoons to obtain their pet Wyvern so that people who want them can have them and people who don't shouldn't have to worry about it.

It's better to satisfy both crowds than to have one suffer for the other.

Yes it may be hard to balance it but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be possible or even worth it. I feel a great part of any game is having options for all players to be happy.

I like the idea of a quest. Something like where during the quest you are asked to spill your own blood to awaken the dormant dragon and it asks if your really willing to give up some of your own powers to revive the dragon. That would let people know about the price to be payed for the pet. It would be kind neat if there was a quest to undo the bound and regain your powers and both are repeatable. This would keep everyone happy right? Don't want a pet pick the "Hellz no get that knife away from me" option. If you want a pet though you can get one but if you decide later on to not have it you can get rid of it. Granted I don't think flip flopping between no pet and pet is a good idea so make the quest somewhat a pain to do.

Allowing us to "paint" our pet would be pretty neat too maybe even have different models for them that are given at random or choice. That way we don't have the same copy and paste pet everywhere we go.

Very rarely will players of an MMO be completely happy with any changes, implementations or content provided. I feel, while taking player feedback, Developers need to go with what they feel is right. ;p

Yoshida indicated from the start his plans for Dragon did not include a Wyvern, but if the players wanted that much he might consider it. I say we should allow him and his developers to point Dragon in different direction than FFXI.

Very good ideas! Honestly, if there's no downside to either party then no one should have anything to complain about with it being added. For the people who want it, they'll be happy, for those that do not, they won't be bothered by it. Yet there are still some who just refuse the very thought about it like a disease.

I'm all for the multiple models for Wyverns and it was a very hot idea in the modding of them in XI.

Entirely reasonable and I understand that. However the option should still be there for the ones who would appreciate it. After all, we're going to be paying a subscription fee for this game; I should think all players deserve to be as happy as can be.

However, I'm very curious to see how Dragoon will perform without the Wyvern as well. To me it wouldn't be nearly as interesting of an adventure, but that's not to say it would be boring either. I think over some time people may become bored and then having a Wyvern will be on many people's lists.

Pets? Could be more like slaves, it wouldn't be the first time in fantasy that man uses Dragon to kill other Dragons. Look at the lore in Game of Thrones or the new game Skyrim (you kill Dragons but are able to call a Dragon to aid you...eventually in the story, once you get powerful enough)

Just saying, but that being said I don't a Wyvern, this run, they have a nice balance of Pet to no pet through out the series and I like it when then flip flop between the two.

I am gonna pose an idea here. Make a choice where you can do the story quest to obtain the job, and at the end you get the opurtunity to chose your allegiance. Either the dragoons of ishgard, or the wyverns of eorzea. This choice will affect your skills and if you have a pet or not. What do you guys think?

A very reasonable and valid opinion. I feel, however, that flip-flopping between having/not a pet in this release of Final Fantasy doesn't exactly translate as a good enough reason to make the final decision in the end. Not alone at least.

I personally love the idea of questing to obtain a pet Wyvern. This would enable us to have a larger back-story about how you two met and on what terms. Theoretically you wouldn't even lose the option to dismiss your Wyvern when needed so I'm all for it!

I would imagine that these ideas we have take time and money to implement into the game; but then again what idea is doesn't. So that shouldn't be an issue. I wonder what input a developer would have on this topic.

you are all forgetting one major point with this choice option. when we create our account and start our game, we hve to pay for a character, the reason why this should not be a problem (we are told) is because unlike other MMO's all aspects of the game can be played by one character. if you are saying at some point in the game we choose a path, then the only way to experience both sides of this story is to make two characters. which then destroys the argument that you only need one character per account

Very good point there!

This is more fuel to the fire that, like I originally suggested, is why we should be able to swap between having our Wyvern out and having them put away to experience both aspects of the world of Dragoon.

I suggested a repeatable quest to get it and a repeatable quest to get rid of it. That way if in a years time you get pissed at the little guy you can send him away. If they do that then everyone is happy end of story. Now lets all eat some cake!

i don't think every1 would be happy, the monk, warrior, bard, paladin, blackmage, and whitemage. would not be happy, why should the dragoon get an extra quest? what make them special?, if they give monk a quest to change their elemental abilities too water, lightening and ice, and give bard a new quest to change its songs. ok so these are just examples and probally not very good ones. but the point is, if dragoon gets a quest for an added extra than so should every other job. or this idea for dragoon would only please dragoons and not as said before every1

I lean a little more towards not having a wyvern and just having some really nice job ability animations that hint at utilizing the dragon's spirit. However that said, I suppose I'd deal either way. Another possible option is to let the thought of a wyvern pet unfold into a whole other class/job that could be added later.

Whenever I mentioned everyone I was actually referring to everyone as a Dragoon. But you brought up a very valid point there; the other classes would get the **** end of the stick.

A possible solution to this could consist of enhancing each individual class where-as they too would be extra special. Another solution could be that Dragoon just get's an optional pet Wyvern like they did in XI where they would be able to dismiss them at will; no other benefits at all.

What do you think of that?

There are no other classes in the realm of Final Fantasy that would entail the use of a Wyvern other than Dragoon (not even Dragon Knight; apparently they are the same thing). Thus I don't believe there's another chance at this happening. But I could be wrong.

Maybe one of many different mobs that could be utilized by an adept Beastmaster ? Just a thought ^^

Every class has to have the same amount of quests? Is this first grade where if one kid get gets a cookie in his lunch box everyone must get a cookie or its just not fair? Would you do a quest if there was no reward? The dragoon quest I'm talking about gives you a pet yes but it takes away from your powers thus you get weaker. All in all the only thing the quest serves to do is ask people if they want a pet. If the quest made them more powerful I would understand your statement but it wont make them any stronger. Just cause one class gets something doesn't mean all classes have to get it.

I couldn't have said it better myself! It's very true that the pet would be an option without any boost that other classes would need to feel jealous about. Were they crying about it in XI? Not that I can recall.

I'm sure the majority do not want to compromise their job in a party just for a pet.
My personal preference. A Dragoon that can do everything by itself with no dead weight.
A mix of Freya + Kain = Awesome+

In FFII, the wyvern in that lore was used as a mount and nothing more. It was used to fly to the emperor and then escape.

But the Dragoon in particular had the Wyvern/dragon :P

Just curious; what about having a pet Wyvern compromises a Dragoon's job in the party? I've said it before but I don't know who's listening; XI Dragoon's had a pet Wyvern and it worked just fine.

I'm not implying that this game be XI-2 in any form, but Final Fantasy has always borrowed it's own ideas for the next installment. FFII may have had a Wyvern as just a mount, but later on FFXI used Wyverns as a pet for a class. That same class exists in XIV and so too does the possibility for the pet. It's just my hope -and possibly the hope of others- that Wyverns may once again be our pets as it happened to be an enjoyable experience. Especially for pet owners. And the best part about my proposition is that having a pet Wyvern is to be optional so each Dragoon has the choice. A win/win.

The reason he is claiming it to be dead weight is because the Wyvern's defenses were like that of a naked-no gear player and one AoE attack or two from a boss fight killed it, and thus you would have to wait for the beast to be resummoned. OR you could try to keep it alive and Spirit Link (give it a % of your HP to heal it) and piss off all the mages because you just lost like 500 HP in the blink of an eye.

Haha yea that's very true. It seems I forgot how Dragoon ended up in the later patches of the game. Well XIV is the next chance at redemption; wouldn't you like to see it done right? What would you consider "right" for the Wyvern (give it a chance for curiosity's sake)?

1st and foremost, to not be able to be two-hit KO'd from a boss and have to wait more than 3 minutes for the next Wyvern. (Its defenses should be equal to the Dragoons, not this 1/4 or 1/3 of it crap like in XI)

2nd, to not have the 90% of the Dragoon's abilities rely on the fact that the Wyvern is out (They should be strong without the Wyvern and give additional effects when it is out, kind of thing, not crippling weak without the Wyvern and strong when it is out)

3rd Wyvern needs armor to strengthen it just like the Dragoon needs armor to strengthen it.

4th on the topic of armor, don't just give Dragoon gimmicky traits on their armor to "enhance" the Wyvern, those should have been separate abilities/traits dammit! (See FFXI Artifact/Relic/Empyrean Body Armor for reference) In doing so with the armor, don't make it super weak just because we have a Wyvern....actually balance it to match with the other DDs.

There are probably more things I can nit-pick about but those were the big things from XI that bugged me. That said I was a Dragoon main! and loved that job more than any of my other max level jobs lol.

3rd Wyvern needs armor to strengthen it just like the Dragoon needs armor to strengthen it.

4th on the topic of armor, don't just give Dragoon gimmicky traits on their armor to "enhance" the Wyvern, those should have been separate abilities/traits dammit! (See FFXI Artifact/Relic/Empyrean Body Armor for reference) In doing so with the armor, don't make it super weak just because we have a Wyvern....actually balance it to match with the other DDs.

There are probably more things I can nit-pick about but those were the big things from XI that bugged me. That said I was a Dragoon main! and loved that job more than any of my other max level jobs lol.

Agreed entirely. XI was the starting point, now the goal is to have XIV perfect the Wyvern.

It was every intention to not have my idea here cripple the Dragoon in any way; nor the Wyvern. Dragoon should perform at top peak in both situations, together and without Wyvern.

I like the idea of equipping the Wyvern with it's own unique armor. This not only enhances your pet but enables your gear to be free of the crippling "enhances Wyvern" effects and instead you can have more important armor effects. Separate is better; I'm not here to cripple a fun class lol.

Dragoon is fun as it is, but there's so much unused potential!
