I have to turn on /busy as soon as I log on or else I get an annoying message once every 30 seconds - 1 minute. This prevents me from seeing tells from actual players and also I have to drop /busy whenever I need an invite from someone.
Is Square Enix going to do more to combat gil sellers? I play WoW as well and I can't remember the last time I have received a whisper from someone trying to get me to buy gold. They obviously did something to kill gold sellers in that game because it's not a problem anymore, at least not on the server I play on.

It has BEEN bad. I don't remember a point in the history of the game (since 2.0) where it hasn't been bad.
In WoW most of the gold sellers sent me mails instead of tells. You can't send mails in this game unless you are friends.
Honestly, outside of no gil sellers at all, I'd rather have the crap coming through my mail, at least I can delete it at my own convenience then lol. -

Moving to a small server is actually the worst possible advice for dealing with RMT spam. Going to a continually locked server is the best solution. If they can't create characters, they can't spam. I see a couple messages a week on Gilgamesh.
The reason you don't see it on wow is because they have "official" gold buying now. Something I'd really rather not see in FFXIV. -

Best advice anyone can offer for you OP is to transfer to a more populated server. I've been on Balmung for months now and have yet to receive a single RMT tell. When I made an alt on Odin, I got one before the opening cut scene even finished.

Sadly the smaller and less populated your server the more PMs you're going to get. I have characters on Gilgamesh and Balmung and I rarely get Gil /tells because its always full...
It sucks but nothing is going to be done about the RMT, its too big a problem and all of the easy fixes hinder other social aspects of the game ( such as not allowing trial / new players to send tells or friend requests ).
If you honestly want to be rid of it for longer periods of time ( I get one maybe every 3-4 hours on a bad day ), switch to a larger populated server. Terrible advice for people with a community I know... but as it stands that is our only option as of now. -

It's simple. All we need is a decline tells from 1 to X lvl range option. Other games had this and worked fine against goldsellers. Didn't get rid of them, but at least we weren't bothered by them. Yoshida doesn't want to, because he says it's very newbie unfriendly yet here we are, forced to use Busy mode which works the same way, yet it even punishes us because it has more downs than blocking RMT tells.
Then we have another solution. Customizable chat box filter. -

On Tonberry and I think I've got maybe 1 PM in the entire time I've been here (over a year now I believe). If you Google "How to completely block RMT without SE having to do anything" and click the first result, there will be a way to get rid of it for the most part. I've never used it myself as I've never had to, but I've heard good things.

So exactly does that say about NA Servers? Could it be that North Americas just feel that being annoyed continuously is something paying customers shouldn't automatically accept? Do you ever strive to improve anything and get rid of the gilsellers? It is not hard to do it with programming, something I know something about. The developers just don't consider it a big enough problem if no large-scale complaints.

The RMT spamming is ridiculous. I am constantly bombarded with tells and having to see it streaming in Say when I'm in a city. I have a hard time following FC chat for it. My Blacklist was full a long time ago and I have to keep deleting names to add new ones, for all the good it does. Is it because the JP servers don't seem to see an issue that the other servers have to suffer this?

Completely disabling /tell from showing up in the log makes it much easier ignore the spam. However, it also prevents you from receiving legitimate tells. There are still the random bots hanging out in populace areas (days at a time when clearly advertising forbidden services,) and I have to blacklist them individually if the bot it set to spam every few seconds.
The amusing thing is seeing the Black Mage mules buy up entire sections of Thaumaturge equipment off of the marketboard. But the mule suspicion is based of gibberish names and aren't a 100% unambiguous guarantee that they're not legitimate players. It's just really likely. -

I'm on Diabolos, just like the OP. It is TERRIBLE. I wish they'd do something, anything to alleviate the situation. Switching servers is not an option, especially since I worked hard to get gil to buy my personal house. I don't want to lose it and as we all know, housing is full on pretty much every server. Right click report for RMT or right click blacklist would be a good start in my opinion. Or more settings, like "only receive tells from friends", or even the option to make a filter without having to use a plugin.

My advice outside of using the /busy status ( I really hate that), is to make a separate chat log tab that has all the same filters as your regular chat log tab, with the exception of /tells.
If you have the sound effect for /tells on, yes, it'll still sound off, but you don't have to see the clutter. And if you're paranoid that it may have been a legit player's /tell, just casually swap the tab and see if it's a real message or gibberish.
