Final Fantasy XIV going back to Final Fantasy Roots

OK I want to start off by saying that I am not 100% bashing Final Fantasy XIV. It has a lot good about it. However I feel like it is going away from what makes Final Fantasy, Final fantasy. I fell like Square Enix is just worried about numbers and getting as many people to sign up for Final Fantasy as possible. The problem is yeah you might have 5 million people sign up for it but how many are actually playing 1 million? If that. Things that drastically need changed are things like the FATE system. I love being able to take a party and with my party only fight a strong monster in the field and let onlookers watch not have the whole server fighting one monster. There is no challenge in that or sense of accomplishment. Another thing is some FATES people don't do anymore and if you can not find 20+ people that level to do the FATE then guess what you will never be able to do it.

I can not stand the Tank swapping mechanic drives me nuts to the point I don't want to tank anymore. The biggest problem I see with Final Fantasy XIV is that it has taken so many ideas from other mmo's which I am sure some people will say all mmo's take from other mmo's. That is all fine and well however Final Fantasy XIV takes the cake there are way too many to list on this forum I would have to create a separate one just for that. The only thing taken from XI is some mob designs and names. My biggest complaint and everyone has to agree with me here when I say that Final Fantasy XXIV is drifting away from Final Fantasy is when I fight Ifrit and I use Fire on him that hurts him.... That should heal him same thing with Ramuh and Shiva... however I do understand the way BLM's is set up to work and they would have to drastically change BLM to make it right. I would be ok with that.

Really all I want to do is see how many people I can get to like this to make Square understand that the actual Final Fantasy fans want it to feel like we are playing Final Fantasy. People can and I am sure will comment on this saying how wrong I am and you are entitled to your own opinion and I respect that. Just make a legit response if you do is all I ask. So If you agree with me and would like to see a change back to what makes Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy please like this or thumbs up or what ever this forum has for approval and get your friends to do the same. Again I am not bashing FFXIV I just love the series to much to see it ruined.

I am sorry for making it into sections It's just I couldn't put more that 1000's characters in it and I need more to get my point across.

inB4 the trolls, its been mentioned for a year now that SE is on its last leg for JRPG's because their player base in Japan is more into mobile platform games like Candy Crush.

But, that being said. I approve.

Firstly, you can get around the 1000 character per post limit by going back and editing your post. (like I just did)

Secondly, it seems you just want FFXIV to just be FFXI-2, which it will never be. You say you want FFXIV to 'go back to FF roots', but it's clear you actually mean "this should be like FFXI". I hate to say it, but the style of game you want is no longer a viable entity - for instance, wanting hard NMs on the world map that "only your party can claim and force others to watch you fight," I'm sorry but this comes across as incredibly self-centered and elitist.

Considering FFXI was inundated with rampant claim bots automatically claiming NMs as soon as they spawned and thus legitimate parties could never get a look in, well, it's not hard to see why such as system was abandoned on the kerb in favour of what is now regarded as standard MMO practice (that is, open claiming on enemies when anyone can freely participate and get credit for the enemy's kill).

Given the fact even FFXI has mostly abandoned party-centric ideas in favour of solo-based gameplay (including concepts brought wholesale from FFXIV), it's not hard to see that this is actually how things are now. Face it, it's not 2001 anymore. The WoW-style of MMO gameplay is here to stay (and it should go without saying that FFXI similarly copied Everquest's style of gameplay and played nothing like a 'traditional FF game either). If you don't like that style of game, then I'm afraid FFXIV will never be enjoyable for you.

Thanks for the heads up on getting around 1000 characters. I never claimed that I want a FFXI-2. 1.0 was very different from FFXI but it still had the FF feel to it. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be able to have party only mobs you can call it self-centered elitist all you want. You just go to prove my point that gamers today want every thing handed to them and do not want to work for anything. Your comment about FFXI have similarities with everquest is all fine and well, however FFXIV has its entire game based off of other MMO's nothing is original. You point about FFXI not having a FF feel however, is invalid.

Sorry, I am going to agree with Enkidoh, but FFXI did not have a FF feel to it. The Overarching story wasn't very accessible.

The other thing is you are asking for a game that is currently unprofitable.

I will come out and say I agree with you that it doesn't feel "Final Fantasy", but in the grand scheme of things, does it really need to? It brings its own feeling, and has Final Fantasy themes mixed in everywhere, from the jobs, to names of characters and bosses, and abilities and so on. The questions I pose to you is, what were you expecting? What did you want from the game? I frankly see it as a great addition to what Final Fantasy is.

On a side note, I played FF11 for quite some time (since CoP was released). While I look back the game as a whole, I have a lot of fond memories, but I will tell you right now, I do not miss it, and I do not miss any of those design choices. I am glad that stuff is gone. I used to have the time to sit and party on mobs to level and endgame camp and so on, but I'm older now, I work, I have a family, I don't have the time for that sort of play style anymore, and SE acknowledges that with the choices they have given us in 14. I don't want everything handed to me, I just frankly don't have to the time to enjoy that kind of a game. Let it be what it is.

I knew I was going to get comments like the ones you all are posting none of your arguments have any merit..... Just because you are a casual player doesn't mean the ones of us who are not shouldn't have a challenge and yall should be able to get almost the same gear we get? If you want an easy game play console games. I strongly believe this game will not last nearly as long as FFXI has lasted.... Just look at the current character base and tell me people are not leaving. I took a break for about 6 months I come back all the people I raided with no longer log on. I dont see any familiar names. all the FF series was based on choosing right attack per fight. As was mentioned above the fire shouldnt do any dmg to fire type enemies. Did u ever try to dry water with another water ? This is what i liked at FF now im disappointed. But they wont chance elemental damage because they cant even add multi-preview feature. And you are not crying japanese :) They dont care about west coz we are minority.

So out of interest, how would you give tanks mechanics to deal with that are not tank swaps? This is just out of interest as i see no problem with tank swaps being required in this game, so are interested in how raids could deal with involving tanks in mechanics specifically for tanks if tank swaps were not part of it.

Also wih the elemental issues you point out. If they introduced elemental strengths and weaknesses into the game that matter, the game would have to be fundementaly redesigned to accomadate this. WHM are the ones who have access to wind water and earth elements in game, BLM having fire, ice and lightning. BLM would be useless vs ifrit in its current design and also useless against shiva.

Also all Final Fantasy entries in the series always change how mechanics work in the game, how elements work and how the various classes work. 9 and 10 had the WHM who were also the only ones who could summon primals. 7 and 8 had no class designations (except maybe tenuously the limit breaks in 8 giving some class division). 12 doesnt have the traditional summons or classes at all, anyone can do anything. 10 anyone could eventually use any kind of magic in the game.

Final Fantasy entries have always changed their own in game rules and lore per entry in the series. Same with 14, it has developed its own set of rules and lore within the Final Fantasy Universe.

But it never changed element damage/resist in all the series. Ofc they will have to think way around for some dmg classes. Or they will have to change rotation. No big deal, SE should first think about core aspects of FF.

I dont agree with your statement "BLM would be useless vs ifrit" since it would take extra dmg from ice/water attacks. Lets say 200% dmg with infinite mp would be op. VS shiva 3stacks of AF + 200% damage would give you enough to swap your stance to regen mp and swap back to deal dmg again. There is no issue in adding small filler spells that use non aspected spells from other classes - ACN ruin.

Sorry but fighting for claim over an enemy isn't challenging. Fighting said enemy might be challenging, but even back when I was playing 11, it was a zerg fest 90% of the time. And I hate to break it, but SE isn't stupid. They remade 14 to cater to the players. They realised most of its playerbase is quite older, so obviously they toned down the silly things 11 had, 24hr NM pops, and things of that nature, because realisticly, we just don't have the time anymore.

On a side note, when 14 was originally released, it was what you wanted, super hardcore. It was very much like FF11, but you know where 1.0 is now? In the trash. If you don't like how it is now, then don't play it anymore. The game has been out for 3 years, and we're 1 expansion in, do you think its going to change?

OP you should just really ignore the comments some people in this community make. You know how they are, any type of suggestion that involves making the game a better experience is replied with the "You want another FFXI" bandwagon or the rather old excuse of having no time because work and family that has no relation of making the game feel more like a Final Fantasy and not like every other generic MMO out there. I don't know what it is that they have to make their comments be known in every single thread like this. Perhaps they feel threatened that SE might actually listen and make this game a better experience for all players rather than just part of it. People like you and me are the type that really love games for what they are capable of being and not just because they are a source of entertainment. We love the craftsmanship behind and we view games in a deeper way. There is a lot of people in the playerbase who think the same way we do. I loved FFXI even with its faults (and I aknowledge them, I don't defend it blindly), it gave the player a great experience and that's how it kept people for a long 10 years. 14, in comparison, while I think it's beautifully crafted, it's missing a soul. Nowhere in my time of playing 11 I ever felt like quitting the game, but here, only 2 years in and I already considered quitting many times and many other people feel the same way.

There is also misinformation in those comments, like the one stating FFXIV 1.0 failed because it was hardcore. Not the first time it's been clarified in other threads. We all know why it failed and it wasn't because it was super hardcore. Hint: unfinished product. Does it really need to feel like Final Fantasy? Well of course, that's why it's called Final Fantasy XIV and not something else, so yes, it should. Even with all the jobs and monsters in the lore, it still doesn't feel like Final Fantasy, because it feels like just any other generic MMO out there precisely because they copied everything from other games. FF14 is not its own game (more like a blender mix from other games with no identity of its own) and it honestly doesn't give its own feeling. That's one of the reasons people have quit since 2.0.

OP, people like you and me look for the best interest of the franchise as a whole and not just ourselves. We want the game to prosper. I completely understand you. The first Final Fantasy wouldn't have given us a great experience that made the series popular if it hadn't been crafted with so much love that it had an identity and soul of its own. It would've been just another Dragon Quest copy at the time and people wouldn't have taken it seriously. While it took elements from DQ they worked on them as a base and added their own so they came up with something that had its own feeling and identity.

I actually encourage people with the same mindset to keep on posting your thoughts and suggest a change. Better to have tried even if failed than stay silent and regret having done nothing later. I've just learned to ignore same old comments and arguments from the people on the other side on the fence, since when we have tried to reason with them they just completely defend the game blindly with misinformed arguments, always attacking FFXI even if it is not mentioned at all and come up with other arguments with no real substance when one confronts them about the faults and end just attacking you with a "no, you" type of comments. Edit: Ah forgot to add, the "if you don't like it, leave" type of comments, too. Just ignore and keep on sharing your thoughts, you are never going to change their stance, just like they will never change yours, even if they try to shut you up and censor you with what I mentioned earlier in this paragraph.

To finalize, yes Fire should heal Ifrit. :P

I would say this is more due to lack of content rather than disliking the game as a whole.I find people get bored more easily. 11 Had a lot of side content, and a lot of time sink in it. It was hard to quit because you always had a lot left to do, and just not enough time to do it.

I would beg to differ. I Feel like its been made with just as much love and care as any older Final Fantasy game. I fail to believe that you don't think this game has a soul, but maybe you're not looking at the bigger picture. I log in and see a world brimming with life. People taking on quests and exploring a world full of wonders.

Yeah, it should feel like a Final Fantasy, but I don't know what you're looking for to make it feel that way. I think it has enough to be called Final Fantasy. Every game made with the title has had recurring themes, and this game is no different.

Let me just say I agree with your entire post. And yeah I am the same way...never once did I consider quitting FFXI, the most I would do is try another game for a couple weeks, or play Lineage 2 but I ALWAYS went back to XI and was never gone for more than a few weeks. With XIV, it happens all the time...not to mention all my friends quit long ago...

So many people have quit XIV and have 0 intentions of coming back that I personally know. The PF is very empty on my server as is the zones. I also say people who feel the same way keep posting. It might make no difference seeing as the only responses we get from devs now on here has to do with fluff content, but it's worth a shot. :(

But people are leaving. Have you wondered why they always talk about "registered" accounts rather than subscribed? It's simple, because the player base is thinning with every month. Yoshida himself admitted that people return only for the first few weeks of new patches.

The expansion too didn't help much. In fact I feel betrayed with it since I quitted the game during the initial release of patch 2.3 and returned for the expansion. When I payed for the expansion which was more expensive than the ARR copy I got in December 2013, I expected an extreme overhaul of the game with airships and stuff being involved in battle but guess what I literally bought a "big" patch not an expansion.

I'd like to point out FFXI, since you compare a lot to this game, had tank swaps, even in the old pre-book leveling party style; 6 player parties, you used to bring two tanks. It gave the healer 2 HP pools to save from /rest constantly. I never played EQ myself, but I'd imagine that also had a similar system.

If you ask me no two final fantasy games have ever felt similar, neither in tone, setting, or characterization. The only thing was the main series had the ATB battle system, which was edged out in FFX anyway. Tactics is another animal entirely. I can't for the life of me figure out what the argument is.

If you talking storyline then that's simply personal tastes. For an MMO the story in this game is about as grand and sweeping as the genre will allow so that cant be the argument. Can someone spell this out for me?

Even ATB was around for only 4 games (V-IX). I,III,V,IX, and XIV have had class options. They all have had some form of Fire,Fira,Cure etc. From II on, they have a main character named Cid, and IV-XIV they have had Summons, I know there are things I'm forgetting but I agree, they are all different in their ways, so I'm not really sure what an FF game is suppose to feel like besides an easternized interpretation of tabletop rpgs brought to you electronically XD

I think this game has been getting more and more in touch with its Final Fantasy roots, personally. And it should be noted that roots is a word that applies to the entire series, not just the oldest games.

For me, things that are damned near obligatory have been added to the game and it feels like a Final Fantasy MMO.

Let's list off a few things...
- Chocobos
- Moogles
- Mandragora
- No parents
- Gil
- Summons, notably Ifrit, Shiva, Bahamut, let alone Titan, Ramuh, Alexander etc.
- Fire/Fira/Firaga, Cure/Cura/Curaga etc.
- Airships
- Crystals
- Key monsters: Adamantoise, Ahriman, Behemoth, Bomb, Cactuar, Coeurl, Dragons, Flan (Pudding), Iron Giant, Malboro, Ochu, Sahagin, Tonberry, Ultima Weapon
- Biggs & Wedge
- Cid
- Materia
- Key jobs: Monk, Paladin, White/Black Mage, Scholar, Dark Knight, Dragoon, Warrior, Ninja, Bard, Summoner
- Key dungeon types: Mines, castles, floating continents.
- Talking brooms
- Various attire belonging to characters in previous games (eg. Lightning, Snow, Cloud, Setzer)
- Key mission: save teh wurld
- Rag tag team of adventurers: Check - be it NPC (Scions) or your fellow players
- Spikey hair and ample cleavage
- Pretty cities and field areas
- Less pretty cities and field areas
- Mythology
- Comet being summoned to destroy the world
- Ancients (Allagans)
- Mukki-like sit-ups!

I mean, should I keep going? Can we make a full on thread out of this? :D I know it would be cool if Thunder healed Ramuh etc, but it simply doesn't work well with player balancing.

Could you clarify what about the expansion you didn't like? Cause I can list what they added with quite a bit of ease. An Expansion is meant to add new features to exsisting things, which it did, not only add to the battle/crafting/gathering classes (some are good and some are bad, but thats off topic), but also add brand new features (flying being the big one). We all had expectations on what we wanted out of the expansion, and I'm sorry yours wasn't fufilled, but I think they did a fine job with giving us new content or addiing onto the exsisting content. Lets remember, Heavensward isn't over, and this isn't really a big point, because its not with the initial release of the xpac, there will be more to come.

It was content u paid for, so expectations are higher than for the free patches. Heavensward inst over, maybe for me or you or next guy but how many pple left 4 ever ? There will be more to come for who ? For how long ? One week ? one month ? Than what ? Most of my FC have all at lvl 60, 205+ ilvl they log in do daily and leave. Awesome. Next we can take Alexander raid (if we can actually call it raid). 4 bosses? Nothing extra, most of that "raid" is just DPS check. Sorry but even ravana have more mechanics.Loot system is something new but to be honest its terrible. You have to farm chest 4 weeks in static 8man, and dont to mention if you now buy 200ilvl chest u have practically nothing to loot from last boss. No trash. What to do as lvl 60? None care already about Rank A sometimes not even about Rank S. The only thing u are doing now is just spending time in casino or farming glamour eq.

Now you have biiiiiig amount of MMORPGs whats so special about FFXIV ? Why to choose it ? Thats the question. If you have 2 breads that looks same just another package which you choose ? OFC cheaper.

TL;DR yes Heavensward was pretty much paid fail.

probably but if you look back you had few good raids, that were for free. Most of players are under i180 because a lot of old players left. The only thing that keed old players is end-game content and sorry 4 bosses rly isnt end game content. Since this game is PvE oriented and PvP isnt really something to be thrilled for, the SE should start thinking about old players, not just about new.

Agreed, honestly I wish we would have seen more stuff for endgame then... the gold saucer, but thats just my opinion.

There are a whole lot of good and bad arguments on both sides of the fence since I last checked on this post. I will not be able to respond to everything. I want to say that I do like this game hence I am still playing it, however I feel it could do much better and to all the people who say this game is 3 years old well I have played FFXIV since beta came out in 2010 to me and many others this game is 5 years old. Yeah FF has changed things over the course of the years in all FF's however they keep in the same realm of the lore not go way off to left field my biggest argument is the magic damage/healing.... There are many others but I can not sit here and list all of them it would take forever. People say SE is giving a lot of content to new players that is exactly it and half the problem you get them hooked with 10 years of story that is overly dragged out to hit level cap then no content to keep them players get bored leave then a new crowd comes in. I am sorry but this story line does nothing for me I find myself skipping half the cs because they are to dragged out. I have been told by people in game "Why should I raid i can get to almost the same ilvl by farming tomes" and they have a point I am going to be 10 ilvl higher for working hard and doing the "hardest" content? They made 2 versions to the new raid one for players who can not do the content to get the same looking gear and one for more advanced players to have some what of a challenge but when I see people selling endgame content guess what it cant be that hard.... To all you people saying I compare this to XI I had said one thing about XI that was it I don't want this game to be XI but I want it to be 1.0 I have so many memories of 1.0 that i miss to no end. Hamlet defense being one of them at first I will admit I hated it but once i did it learned it, it was incredibly fun. You know why games have a duty/dungeon finder? The real reason? if they didn't could you imagine trying to get groups together on your server alone? I can imagine the outrage. It's just to get players from other servers so you can complete them.

Do you really believe this? We got a ton of things..

- Flying
- Level cap increase
- New Playable Race
- 3 New jobs
- 5 new zones, 8 if you count ishgard and idyllshire
- 8 new dungeouns
- Entire New story
- 1 new raid
- 2 new trials, and 2 extreme versions of those (which are also primals)
- expanded abilitys for battle classes, crafters and gatherer's
- Specialists for crafters
- Collectables for crafters and gatherers
- 1 new PvP map
- airship exploration
- New hunt marks
- New Triple Triad Cards
- Unsyncing old content

And these are just major points, but if you limit yourself to just a few things, I can see why you'd feel like you paid for trash. But that is not my problem, nor is it the developers fault that you can't find more things in the game you enjoy.

Elemental damage in traditional FF games is actually really boring from a design perspective, for the most part. You usually get each tier of elemental damage spell at roughly the same time, which means it doesn't introduce any tactical choices: either the enemy is more vulnerable to one element, in which case you always want to use that element, or they're not, in which case you use whichever one you like the most. You might as well just give the black mage one 'generic damage' spell and have certain monsters take more or less damage from it.

There are some exceptions, like enemies with changing/randomized weaknesses, putting on elemental absorbing gear and using it to heal, etc., but in general it's actually a pretty boring mechanic. I can't imagine how you'd implement it in an interesting way.

Monsters doing elemental-aligned damage is somewhat more interesting because it creates decisions like 'do I want to wear this gear with really nice defensive stats, or this gear that has moderate defensive stats but lets me absorb the boss's huge fire-aligned attack?'. But in traditional FF games you have unlimited gear space, so 'forcing' the player to keep around fire-absorbing gear has no downside. You can't really do that in FFXIV.

I think the grindy nature of MMOs compared to traditional RPGs also pushes people towards making more 'optimal' decisions. If you're going to fight a boss once, then sure, you don't have to think about what your gearing strategy is. But if you're going to do it hundreds of times for XP/loot/whatever, you're going to gravitate towards the one optimal loadout and ability rotation.

I too must agree with Enkidoh the old style was all well and good but not everyone can get into the older style of Final fantasy what your asking for is well self-centered and elitist as Enkidoh said next you'll be asking Square enix to make FFXIV turn based like older Final fantasy games if they did that the likely hood of the 1 to 5 mil players will probably drop to 10k if not less. And i highly doubt you'd find alot of raiders or other guys that wanna go back to standing in the line of Aoe's hoping that they will miss or that the block skills used for they're turn worked

I dont agree with your statement "BLM would be useless vs ifrit" since it would take extra dmg from ice/water attacks. Lets say 200% dmg with infinite mp would be op. VS shiva 3stacks of AF + 200% damage would give you enough to swap your stance to regen mp and swap back to deal dmg again. There is no issue in adding small filler spells that use non aspected spells from other classes - ACN ruin.

200% is unbalanced and something that previous FF games did not do to that extent. So yes if we are going to grossely exaggerate figures, then maybe your argument has some ground.

Flying - something new in mmo games
lvl cap increase - something new for expansions all over the world
3 new jobs - at least some improvement
5 new zones - the only difference there is few new npc and flying otherwise recycling of old database
new story - most of players play this game for end game content so yes i take it as + but not mandatory to game
1 new raid - u calling it raid ? i think i was clear in my previous post
2 new trials - that are more challenging than raid with lower ilvl. Why?
new abilities - ofc you have new lvl cap
specialist for crafters - not very useful for end game content but yes you got something to do for a week
Collectables for crafters and gatherers - again something new in mmo worlds
PvP - is actually some1 playing PvP ? coz its empty
airship - finally something original
hunt - none bother with that
cards - most of us play this game not because of cards
unsyncing old content - yes finally after years of requests we had to pay for this option

and i can continue. So yes it was paid fail. You get nothing extra for 40euros, pretty much as was mentioned above by others, no end game content. So yes for 5 months of no contents is overpaid nothing. As i said above why pple should buy this when they can buy other mmo that includes all above and includes normal end game content?

There's a difference between adding more of the same and actually adding something to the model. The only points here that arguably could have added something to the model were Flight, Crafter specializations, the New jobs, and Unsynced older content, and yet Flight added nothing to either exploration as a whole, only accelerating it per standard-fare MMO (lack of added) mechanics, the New jobs are infamously little more than a mash-up of older jobs, the crafter specializations contradicts the general purpose of being able to level everything on one character (forcing alt characters just as eso count does), and the unsynced content contributes only to story carries and glamor farms. I can't point of any of these and say "this changed how the game felt, for the better."

PvE? We have this? IV only seen the open world as mostly catered to crafters and gatherers cause once you hit 60 all battle related stuff is in timed instances? Cept hunt mobs but these are hit and miss. Raids are awfull period open world content as a battle class awfull (and I mean as a level 60 class). Gear progression.....im not even going to touch this.

Since we do call the traditional 12-by-12 meter boss room and environment, yes, we have PvE. The merits of including such into the category are debatable.

Question for you all. If you could take what defines or highlights "Final Fantasy" across multiple the majority of its iterations, what would it be? Not just chocobos or crystals, but what it lends to gaming generally...

not sure if you meant this but :)
- elements - damage resist absorb, pretty much in all FF
- gunblades - a lot of characters are using this weapon
- philosophy - Gaia (although mostly presented in FFVII)
- primals - they were present in most of FFs in few even as summons

surly there is more any1 can continue if he remember more core elements :)
