If the 2.0 weapons continue to be upgraded post 3.0 then that is an entirely different story (one that justifies nerfs). However, if everyone is back to square one (new relics) post 3.0 - then that in itself eliminates the reasoning behind nerfing the zodiac quests (new players will be caught-up when the new questline is introduced).
At least allow the players who put in the time to have the benefit of glamours. There are plenty of players who suffered through the atma phase (many spent 100+ hours). If these weapons are going to be outdated in a mere 6 months - then what is the point of playing catch-up? What is the point of ever playing at more than a casual pace if all items (regardless of necessity) are gift-wrapped to the entire community? This is an instance where it is not necessary (assuming new relics in 3.0).
Old content should be nerfed when new / casual players are faced with unreasonable amount of catch-up. That I completely understand. If there are new relics in 3.0 - any nerfs lose their purpose.

Doing Zodiac quests is a good way to keep players paying monthly , while they finish the atma>books >alexandrites > farm dutys > ???
or just buy 100 weapon with soldiery that rains down the sky (2.4) , UAT who doesnt have 1 at least by now? else go ST and get 1 this week no1 need on it anymore > free 110

But because they waited so long - the damage has been done and countless players have endured. As you say, there is no point for a new player to spend countless hours obtaining a meaningless item level 100 animus when item level 110 weapons are already a common commodity. In half a year, 3.0 will be released and there will likely be a new relic quest. There is no "need" to catch everyone up. what does it matter if people who are just starting on this get their atmas a little faster? Its a good change anyway since the old system was unfair as hell. mine took about 35-40 hours while some got theirs in less than 15. -

My question is where did you get the idea that 3.0 will contain new relics? I have never seen that in any official interview/live letter. Maybe I missed it but right now I'm under the impression that relics will continue to be upgradeable post 3.0.
In addition to relics they might add an additional upgradeable weapon (similar to how they added mythic weapons in FFXI) but so far we know nothing about 3.0 other than the name and a few obvious details (new jobs/primals/dungeons/raid).
Personally, I'm very grateful that they are increasing the atma drop rate, aside from that I'm not really too concerned. My experience with atma has not been a good one at all and at this point I've given up on it but the changes coming in 2.4 will give me a reason to go back and try again, hopefully without spending over 12 hours in a single zone without getting anything this time. -

If a new questline is starting in 3.0 - why does there need to be a purpose and incentive for new / casual players to complete Zodiac? Let all of the time that previous players spent be worth something (as a nice glamour piece). It's not like new / casual players can't put in the time as well if they really want the glamour piece. I agree - there is better use of ones time but SE shouldn't make getting a Zodiac easier (to create incentive) when countless alternatives exist for new / casual players. Current relics will continue to be upgraded, why would they make a brand new starter relic quest when we already have one, they'll nerf parts of it, but they aren't gonna make a complete new one, don't know where your getting that idea from, and they need to remove all hi-level weapons from npc's ....they should only be obtainable through relic quest, primals and coil drops..giving people access to ilvl 110 just for saving up some soldiery points is disgusting

My bets on relic progression speed come 3.0 compared to 2.3:
Base+Zenith: Roughly the same as now.
Atma: 1/2 (if 2.4 is the only Atma drop rate increase) to 1/4(if 2.5 or 3.0 has an Atma drop rate increase) the current time on average.
Animus: Book costs down to ~375 lesser Tomestones.
Novus: Down to 1/4 time for Alexandrite with rough 80% less gear spent on converting Tier IV materia.
Nexus: Around 125 or less newborn star dungeon runs vs 334 brillant runs to soulbind on average. -
