I believe you missed the part where this maintenance is EMERGENCY. That means they do it as soon as possible. Regular maintenances tend to get moved around. A few recent ones have started as early as 9pm PST which seems like that would have the game coming back up right around when your playtime is... Unfortunately most of the time they're going to pick time periods that affect the least amount of players. Besides ensuring the minimal amount of player disruption it also ensures that the servers don't get bum rushed the second they finish and bring them back online which normally results in strings of login errors and potentially follow up maintenance for a crashed server.
This is getting pretty absurd. The fact that it always happens at this time, and a day after the patch is ridiculous. I have been patient during many of their zerg maintenance-thons where we have like 6 in a matter of a couple weeks, but when you need to have so many always putting them at the same time is alienating the players in that timeframe. Pushing it back to 3am pst even occasionally will ensure that the pst NA doesn't get the shaft nonstop with this malarchy. Again, rotating the times is the more appropriate response to this.
After playing almost 10 years of FFXI, I got used to this.
Stop complaining, it won't change anything. Go do something else for 2 or 3 hours.
Have none of yall ever play a MMO?
Normally all patches/ maint happens on the same day at the same time. Most MMO's I played have kept there HOTFIXs happening around the same time and the only time it changes depends how much needed the hotfix is
From a business standpoint, to SE this is the best course of action - minimizing impact on the majority of players - (mostly) past US prime time, and before JP prime time, the two largest customer bases for this game. Imagine the complaint threads that would appear if they did rotate maintenance times as all the people getting the short end of the stick have been suggesting - especially if one just "happens" to land in the middle of US prime time.
Sparktacus, would you rather maintenance happen a week after the patch, during which time people might find and possibly exploit game-breaking flaws? I'm happy SE's just addressing issues in a timely manner. Emergency maintenance is named so because there's stuff that needs to be fixed here and now. Scheduled maintenances are common in any MMO - we don't even get scheduled maintenances every week like other games do - our last two scheduled maintenances happened on August 18 and July 29.
Yes please Yoshi, work overnight 'cause we can't stay 4 hours without the game.
I'm going to say the same thing I've said in other games. If you don't like the maintenance times, play games made in your region. Of course this maintenance affects me pretty directly too since I'm also a late time player. But them's the breaks. I've been enjoying US times for other MMOs in which other players (mainly EU) are affected by our times.
It is the law of supply and demand.
SE used to always have maint during the early AM JP hrs during the initial release weeks, which always meant during the peek DAY time in US. This resulted a major setback for NA based players since maint were always during NA peek times. SE then changed it to after 12am PST, so it impacts as least NA based players as possible. It was the best time slot they can squeeze in w/o effecting the majority of the NA playerbase, and you just happen to be within that time slot.
It is very unlikely SE will change the maint timeframe.
And if course people who arent affected are coming here saying "deal with it"
Yes please change the maintrnances to different times. They always affect me and if theres a maintenance, that means I cant play that day.
How is it fair that I lose one day of gaming EVERY DAMN MAINTENANCE when I pay as much for my subscription as everyone else.
Yes it would affect more people if they changed it time to time, but it wouldnt affect THE SAME PEOPLE over and over.
On the NA servers they almost always happen at night when there are few people playing. Sorry if you play late nights but most people don't and they want to effect as few people as possible.
SE's a business, and a business is very unlikely to screw over a larger population of customers so a smaller population can enjoy the service for some time. If I sound apathetic, I'm not - I understand where you're coming from, but from a business perspective this isn't likely to change. There has to be SOMETHING else you can do though, even if it's not the best way you want to spend your free time.
They should rotate them more.
Yes it affects the least number of people for the NA servers at this time, but by choosing the same time it affects those same people every time. It's better customer service to interrupt everyone a little than the same group of people repeatedly, even if the size of the groups is different.
Static maintenance times are better used for businesses which close (not 24-hour) or where the customers inconvenienced by an outage are different each time (a 24-hour restaurant for instance).
Not the end of the world, but yea super annoying. Night time is the only time I have to play this game, since I work all day/run errands. So its annoying when I finally get to sit down and find out 5 min into my play time that I gotta log off in an hour. Really aggravating but oh well, sleep is nice too lol.
If it's an emergency it should be done ASAP, within minutes. It's not like I sit here and think..hmm I wanna have an emergency in a few hours. Well...nah nvm, don't feel like having an emergency today! Maybe they should use the word urgent. =P Lol.
Yeah, yeah I know...they are giving people some time to be polite, but I just wanted to joke around.
Why can't they just have different times for different servers? EU servers would probably have their maintenance during the morning (when I got most time to play) so then I could choose to play on an NA server for better maintenance times.
But instead, they chose to have them the 3 hours of free time I have before work everytime.
To me it doesn't matter if it affects more people. Say they have 6 maintenances a month, some people don't get affected by that at all, and for some people that means they just lost 6 days of playing from their subscription.
if they rotated the times maybe everyone would be hit by the maintenance twice during those 6 maintenances
It's not about making "most of the people happy" its about making all of the customers happy. I'm seriously considering quitting cause of how SE handles things like this (and lots of other stuff too, SE as a company to me is a joke compared to a lot of other companies imo)
I have never seen a maintenance that hasnt affected me so far, so no it doesn't matter if it's an emergency maintenance or not they are still around the same times
As an Australian player every time there is a maint its during my prime. Even though its honestly not worth complaining about static Maints would be nice but in saying that most NA servers are probably dead so its very understandable
It affects me cause I'm in CST and I normally play late at night, but it's no big deal to me. No point throwing a fit about it. I'm glad they are putting in the effort to try to fix things quickly.
Deal with it or unsub, it's really that simple.
Clearly you dont know how this stuff work.......
They try to do these things during times when it wouldnt effect or impact the most players. 99% of the MMO's have set times they do everything so the main people whining are the small tiny bunch thats not worth changing the times
So now go sit down and hush
You can´t satisfy everbodys demands...
you don´t like it... i like it because it´s not free time, it´s work time at my Timezone...
If you think globally, you will never find a time where no one would be affected...
And as someone mentioned: it´s emergency... you can´t plan failures before, and I really hope it get´s better (yesterday evening, playing was a Diashow into 90k festival)
If you have precog abilities in knowing failures before they happen, give me a call, i would like to talk about the lottery numbers ;-)
Yeah, seriously, because there is nothing else in the world I could possibly do to occupy 3 (or likely less) hours of my time.
Oh me, oh my. Whatever shall I do, it is the end of the world!
I second this idea. My entire static plays during the time they always do maintenance. It means losing at least one day a week for coil and when there is double maintenance, 2 days a week. Considering the fact that these are usually the two days AFTER reset means its the two days where we all try to get coil done. Would be good if they rotated maintenance or at least maybe put the maintenance on the day right before reset. You know, the day of the week where everyone has done all their stuff and no one plays?
Emergency maintenance doesn't mean they're going to shut the servers down the moment they find something wrong (given that they do need to find the source of what's wrong and develop a fix for it, otherwise that's just taking the servers down for longer than needed, which gives kind of a bad image) - they will still try to minimize disruption to services through when they decide to shut the servers down.
Obviously its not a minimal disruption. I'm sure we are just the most vocal of the night crew, but whenever they do maintenance, no matter the type, its now. You can say "oh its affecting the least amount of people" rant til you guys are blue in the face, doesn't change the fact that there is still a goodly majority getting screwed over. Rotating these "emergencies" is a logical fix for this.
Unbelievable how many tards jump in screaming "deal with it or unsub" yet don't even address any of the valid points brought up in the thread. Nobody is suggesting moving the maint times to NA prime time. They are suggesting not always having maint at the exact same time, especially multiple times a week. As already stated, late night subscribers pay just as much as primetime subscribers do.
And please stop with the idiocy about it being a Japanese game being the reason. It's 4pm in Japan when maint starts here. I don't know if you understand as little as you guys seem to, but 4pm IS PRIME TIME.
1. Think
2. Speak
Very simple.
Um, no, they've chosen maintenance times to effect the least amount of people possible. You're in the "vocal minority" not the "goodly majority". The emergency maint yesterday isn't even worth discussing, because it was an emergency!Quote:

"An outage" is the key there. People aren't complaining about a single outage, they're complaining about all outages.
Taken one at a time, it makes perfect sense to affect the least number of people. Taken on the whole, it's terrible customer service to affect the same group of people repeatedly when you offer a flat-rate subscription for a 24-hour service.
So exactly how many times have you been interrupted recently? There doesn't seem to have been enough outages to justify the complaining. You need solid evidence to support your claim of poor customer servicr or no-one is going to listen. I would suggest a list of outages for the past... 6 months? With how this has impacted you and your static or whatever directly. Then someone might appreciate where you're coming from. Otherwise you just sound whiney.
