Shocked at the reduction in mage damage, quadruple mp cost, and lowered resources

I have to say one thing I really enjoyed in this game was playing my Conjurer. The Nature's Fury ability, which lets you use aoe on your auto attack to burn up levequest targets was really fun.

I've soloed a few of the mid-tier NMs and it was hard to cure myself through the fights. I would run out of mp mid battle and have to sleep the NM and go into passive mode so I could regain my mp. And that's after I had siphon MP'd them to 0 mp.

I also really enjoyed curing in this game because in FFXI it was not fun playing the game of whack a mole, hitting targets with single cast cure spells.

But now with patch 1.18 I'm going to be having a lot less fun with my gametime.

-Nature's Fury recast time means I can only use my aoe attack twice a minute.
-Cure 3 MP cost has been quadrupled from 36 MP to 130, meaning I have less than 7 cures to use when soloing an NM. Some of these NMs hit for around 500 HP, meaning you would need one Cure 3 for every hit just about. Now, I doubt I'll be able to continue going on adventures by myself since I simply won't be able to cure myself through the damage.
-Since aoe has been removed from cures I'll now have to leave some of my abilities behind so I can assign Curaga spells to my action bar, and since 7 heals take priority over any kind of damage, I guess I'm playing a healer all of a sudden and I can forget about being a caster damage dealer
-Siphon MP no longer aoe means I have less resources to work with and improvise with out in the field

I must conclude it is no longer as fun playing my class, and it is not going to be possible to enjoy the same kinds of activities I did before patch 1.18. On top of that, even though I picked Conjurer for the elemental magic ability, I now am going to have no role other than healer in parties since I can do no more than 7 cures with my MP. Prior to patch 1.18 I could afford to throw out 7 cures and still use my other abilities but now I will be focused on healing, which means I won't be playing very much. That is not something I enjoy.

Well, how do you feel if you're a magic user? Did this change impact your playstyle or your enjoyment of your class?

Yeah, I can see my self being challenged, instead of just sitting back and aoe curing every 10 seconds.

I imagine they want to make a lot of the NMs non-soloable. Otherwise, what's so notorious about them?

I'm not upset, I've been waiting for some changes to bring more challenge to the game. Soloing NMs seemed to cheapen gameplay.

And you can still play Mage DD, just get another CON in party to play healer, while you nuke.

Looks like people might actually have to invest in MND to up that available MP

The NMs are very much non-soloable. The fun comes in finding a creative way to solo them. In FFXI, that was RDM/NIN for a long time. Thinking outside the box and figuring things out. That was my forte.

yes, i am quite upset with the ignorance of this update with regards to the way both mages were just made to be less fun to play. i mean why would anyone play a game to have fun anyways?

yeah I agree I'm not in it to work. If I'm going to work I damn well am gonna be paid for my time. It's a good thing Dark Souls is coming out in a few months.

RDM/NIN was hardly creative or "outside-the-box" thinking. Hmmm, what happens if I use the same strategy as a blink-tank post-37 while at the same time melee/DoT/nuking and using convert + refresh + haste + pro/shell + every other buff on the planet? That was as straightfoward as possible. I spent every one of my 8 years as a mage in XI and hated it in this game and refused to play it past rank 20 up until (possibly) now because it was stupidly easy. Thankfully SE is adding a challenge to being a skilled mage. About damn time in my opinion.

Certainly seems better than the alternative of spamming Sacrifice for regen aoe on the entire party every 10 seconds regardless of need and never once needing to look at the mp bar. Which, if I'm not mistaken, is all that being a healer could have hoped to be pre-1.18.

remember in xi being 5/6 dying for a freakin mage to seek party?

solo play is dead too.... unless you rank up via farming, sooooooo fun

the NMs weren't meant to be soloable. I see no reason for QQ other than the fact that I can only cure my party a few times before running out of MP...and in a 30 min fight, that is....unacceptable.

Then they should have made a healer class. Now I'm going to be labeled as one of the non-healer Conjurers and I'll be sitting around LFP. Healing was never an issue for any mage, and no mage was ever defined as a healer. You're absolutely right that it's no fun to spam one spell.. Now you aren't going to be spamming it, you're going to be waiting to press Curaga II since you're only going to be able to cast it 7 times. Going to be spending a lot of time in passive mode, doing nothing, instead of being what a mage was described as on finalfantasyxiv.com

I like the shift to party play (though some of the changes definitely hurt solo leveling alot...). One thing I don't like is the lack of nothing to do while waiting for auto-attack to generate TP :)

Honestly, learning to use single-target spells won't be that bad if melee players are intelligent enough to follow directions and learn where to situate themselves to avoid AoE. If DD takes hate, which there should be much less of an excuse for now, they better be able to self-heal because your mp is reserved for either a) DD or b) keeping the tank on his damn feet. The extent to which this game has babied everybody from the beginning is insane, and a significant part of the problem the fact that in almost every case, death was not a threat thanks to spammable healing aoe spells. I can honestly say that as setting myself up as DD LNC I have never once thought about whether or not I would pull hate dropping TP move after TP move. The reason? Mages never run out of mp, and eventually enough AoE spells will be thrown around and tank will recover the hate. Nobody will die, we'll move on. There was no strategy. This needed to happen for the balancing of the game as a whole.

This is what happens when combat changes aren't tested enough.

I don't know what you're talking about...

They left in light stab/thrust/slash/ and heavy skills from points. Then you have all these skills, it's a WoW spam a thon.

Stuff still dying left and right. Animation >skills available. Need more balance on those timers.

I'm hoping 1.19 they tone it down, and isolate more skills to classes. It's still a zerg a thon

System is good so far though. a lot more fluid then the old system.

I find MP costs fine. They lost all aspect of mana conservation and resting/swapping, and went into mana burn.

Now people are asking why they can't mana burn anymore.

Did it really seem like I wanted something easy to do? There's nothing about what I said I enjoyed that was easy. It was hard. What I don't like is having white mage shoved down my throat. There's too much emphasis on healing caused by this raise of mp costs. I want to be something like a BLM/WHM. Now I'm more like a WHM/RDM. I didn't sign up for that.

So, I tried and died quite a few times trying to solo Pyrausta as a Marauder (because it's my highest class)

I figured hey, I'll try to get to level 30, get Feint (since I had low DEX at the time), stock up on some potions and ethers, maybe then I'll have a chance.

I never managed to actually reach my level goal due to lack of interest with the game. I figured hey, maybe I'll get hooked again after the combat change and maybe then I'll succeed in my goal.

Patch hits, I read the patch notes.. yeah.

No chance, ever, of being able to kill that NM alone anymore. Might not even be able to duo it either, but what do I know? I'm just a lone wolf who has no friends because they all think FFXIV sucks, and their systems can't even run it regardless. Great day to try and keep playing a game I want to love, but never can.

I feel you man. Out of all of my gamer friends, only 1 had a PC capable of running this game. He bought it, then lol'd at it and he isn't coming back.

you guys are bullshit if you think every nm in game should take a group. I guess you all never farmed o kotes or leaping boots by yourself. Only high tier nm should require a pt to kill, if a r 50 mage cannot solo a mob that drops a r 25 wep then there is a problem. I just cant wait for all the dumb ass DD to start dieing because we only have 1 class that can heal and its spells cost so much. I bet they didn't adjust the aoes of mobs at all which will be fun for conjs. Eventually people who have NEVER even touched a mage class will learn because they have to spend all their time looking for a conj to do anything, and because they will always be dead from eating aoes and not being conscience of the mages in pt..

the NMs you are talking about in FFXI were no higher than around level 20... the ones in FFXIV are now lower than around level 40....so yes, every nm in FFXIV atm should require a group. Once lower level ones are introduced, you will be able to solo them.

Dude these ARE the low level nms... that was the whole idea when they were implemented. Now you cant even duo them at the levels that are required to equip the piece.

Well then equip Siphon MP, Siphon MP II, Stygian Spikes II, use Tranquility/Exaltation. There's still something you can do about MP recovery. Before this patch I rarely had to use MP recovery skills/spells/abilities. You just have to use your MP smarter.

read, again, what I said. Those NMs are no lower than level 40. You're supposed to group up to kill them. Do you not remember, in FFXI, that sometimes mobs that even level 75's couldn't solo would drop gear for level 50's?

There's a reason why NM's are supposed to be harder than normal mobs... If only there was someway we could have, I don't know, a max of 8 person party so we could fight these difficult NM's...
