that happens in every game, when a new patch drops there are more people playing and then they leave after a few weeks.

Yeah, but FFXIV actualy increase its number of player every time. It never fall further than expected and maintain enough player to be extremely profitable.
Your theory fall flat in front of reallity.
Yoshida himsefl recommand player to unsub, play something else and come back later to enjoy new content. So what now ? Does he scuttle is own ship ?
It's absolutely annoying apologetics on behalf of one of this game's flaws. The response with 100% completionist for everything is an excuse as old as the genre itself.
Have you collected 99 economizers, learned every skill on every esper for every character, leveled everyone (even the ones you don't use) to 99, maxed out your GP? No? Then you aren't done with FF6 yet.
Gotten the 1/65535 pink tail in FF4? Leveled all characters to 99? Have 99 of every stackable item in your inventory, even the useless items? No? You aren't out of content yet in Final Fantasy 4 either.
It's obvious that's not what people are referring to when they bring this subject up and it's such a poor deflection of the issue. Any OCD person can invent tasks for themselves to do in the game and claim they aren't out of things to do, the problem is as a staple of the genre this game fails hard at the relevant content that comes with the genre expectations. Endgame PVE content comes with the territory of MMOs. That's just the way it is. So when it's not there, people notice and they do get kind of upset.
Interestingly enough, this is part of why I don't always unsub when I take breaks from XIV. I like to support developers that not only produce content I enjoy, but also ones that show they respect their players.
It just would be nice for a few more pieces of challenging post game content to exist for those that want to sink a little more time into the game before they take a break for something else. As once the break starts you then loose an advantage over every other form of entertainment out there that competes for our very limited free time that gets allocated to entertainment.
Pretty bored with FF14 right now, but I don't know what else to play. I thought about resubbing to WoW, but I know that 99% of what I mentally map out for myself to accomplish won't be done.
I log in to that game and instantly lose motivation.
No its not. It just means you have a higher tolerance to grind that kind of content just for the sake of doing grindy content.
It just gets old being told you can't say there is a lack of content type X if you haven't gone and ground every piece of content you might find tedious into the ground first.
I would recommend a game that plays differently from FFXIV. Or it could just end up feeling like you're doing the same thing once again.
I'm switching between FFXIV and ESO.
Both are good MMOs imo and they play differently enouth to feel refreshing when I login. plus ESO doesn't require an active sub to play (Buy2Play though). So easy to just jump in once in a while to play a little.
I do recommend Single player games aswell, since the story in those games tend to be alot better than in MMOs. If that is what you seek.
