So about Summoner...

Forgive me if I'm missing something obvious but if you buffed RDM to have the same DPS as SMN or something, why would any raid group ever want to bring SMN? Making them both the best caster at prog AND at level on speed runs would just destroy other casters because you would just take a RDM for the equal DPS plus the ability to recover if a fight starts to go south. Unless people want RDM to lose Verraise, I guess?

Yeah, it's in a good place compared to SMN, in that it offers the same DPS while having no utility and being harder to play. "Things that tell you somebody mains a job while barely playing or understanding others" is my favorite jeopardy category. "Lul no utility" is a pretty good criticism when all of the jobs that have guaranteed slots are coincidentally all utility jobs.

If BLM received no further changes I could tolerate its current position, but it's not where it needs to be when there are still glaring problems with the job.

Most that are wanting changes are not asking to be equal in damage to smn but have some dmg buffs, changes to embolden and either remove verraise or increase the mp cost

And none of that matters "equally" for all players. Healers and Tank pushing as much damage as humanly possible literally only matters if you're trying to optimize your clears to the point of speedrunning. That doesn't apply for the majority.

It's damage output is about equal to SMN WITH our utility factored in. And I play all 3 casters and regularly talk to others who play them as well and optimize as I do. What am I supposedly missing here? The only "downside" to BLM is the fact that it's harder to play. You could say perhaps they still deserve a slight buff to compensate for that, but it really doesn't need much because it would only be abused by those who ARE good at the class and would create balance issues on that end.

And I agree with that (and I talk in that discord regularly and have mentioned it there as well). But it shouldn't get any changes BEYOND that. As he said, it only falls behind when you actually begin to optimize your game play heavily (which most players/groups don't do), therefore it's an issue that only few people would have to begin with and even fewer think SE should just throw buffs at the class to compensate for it without understanding the true effect that could have. Notice where he said "if they just buffed RDM's damage, it would be completely broken in prog", that would ALSO be a balance issue and yet people are ignoring that because "well I want my class to be favored"

That change alone wouldn't push it up to SMN's level. It would improve things definitely but it wouldn't be significant to the point of being comparable to SMN currently. I do think that's the one change that "should" be made currently for RDM, but nothing else. But regardless of that change happening or not, it wouldn't change the perception of the class

I've known about that quote since he said it but it's also not a change that most people here are referencing. Most people when complaining about the dps disparity just want direct potency buffs to "fix" it. His own quote "rather than a buff, we just need our rotation balanced". I've also mentioned earlier (probably days ago when I first posted in this thread) that all RDM needed was a rotational change for alignment purposes (which also coincides with embolden). He's also made comments in the past (like when 4.2 launched) when that discord channel blew up over "no RDM buffs" and he told them they didn't need one nor should they expect it.

The current perception is that it's a braindead weak prog job.

Adding a means of optimization with the team means it's no longer "braindead". As far as has been brought forward, as far as pDPS and rDPS goes, apparently RDM isn't actually all that far behind SMN, so it would be enough of a buff. It would be good for progression, true, but just like SMN it would be able to evolve past it as well.

And even if it's not brought up to SMN's level, it's at least a little bit closer.

No, that's patently false. It's about equal before. BLM has a 30 DPS lead at the 90th percentile in savage. SMN utility is considerably more than 30 DPS.

I've acknowledged the same issue for a long time (quite a few people have), but that's not a direct "buff" change. That's just a mechanical change to the rotation that would indirectly buff RDM's damage by a bit. When people here are asking for damage buffs, I highly doubt this is what they were referring to.

That's a cop-out answer, but also one that manages to be presumptive and self-gratifying at the same time. The complaints toward RDM's performance were about its competitiveness at higher levels of optimization and skill, a situation in which alteration to its rotation to align with raid cooldowns presents a direct buff to its damage output, but you've taken it upon yourself to presume that it's really potency buffs they're after.

Smn output is almost the same as blm before utilities factored in.

Damage is not really problem with BLM. BLM can do like 700 more dps on dummy than SMN. Problem is that BLM not have any party synergy, majority of players can not keep their uptime on 100% and they lack party utility.

Edit: My idea would be let BLM stack more than 1 foul(like 3 fouls) and make it instant cast. That would help both casual players and hardcore players. You could save the bursts for party utility like trick attack, it would be easier save aoe damage for add phase and would boost mobility + easier weave ogcds. Another thing blm need imo is 1 foul stack before match start. BLM opener is really lackluster because they have to wait first 30 sec before foul is ready and at that point all opener buffs are already gone. I think there should be the way gain 1 foul stack before match start. Utility would be if manaward would be aoe shield that absorb like 15% damage from partymembers and 30% self.

This is kinda getting out of hand. RDM mains put down your pitch forks because he’s right for the most part.

RDM being balanced around verraise sucks but it does allow healthy synergy between all 3 casters which is the big picture. Yes SMN gets to be the lucky child but it’s STILL balanced. If you’re angry that casters have to fight for a slot. That’s fine, but to say casters aren’t balanced is wrong. Verraise is powerful, it’s a tool that allows you to “see” more mechanics even if you wipe. (Nobody mentioned this). I understand you guys want change but, the change you’re asking for is only going to put SMN and BLM in the same position we’re supposedly in. I’ve even mention that a change I’d like is for manafiation to give 3 free enchanted gcds because RDM burst windows are too inconsistent. How about we talk about that, is it a bad idea or a good one. This is a tool that's only so useful though, and its use can be just as easily overblown as it can be underappreciated. Also, within the last page I bring up a potential change I would like to see that is along the same lines as your own suggestion, that being a cooldown ability for RDM to better line up their burst windows with the party's.

Another thing that should be mentioned is that, I believe it’s fine if you want to ask for buffs to make RDM a meta option, nothing wrong with people wanting their mains to be the best. I know many players who stick with a job in its lows and watched as some of those jobs even became meta options. PLD/SMN since HW. Lets be patient and see what the future has, SMN is meta today but tomorrow it could be RDM or, BLM or, SMN can continue to reign supreme. Alternatively, none of them could be meta and it wouldn't be the first time.

Yes but you can’t give appropriate value to something based off of how niche it is. Verraise can work in or out of prog and this should be balanced around the idea of raising players with the greatest of ease. You can go into detail about mp but there are tools on other jobs that they’re balanced around to handle that. RDM is a victim of its utility, ask for them to remove it. Then RDM becomes a great value SMN or vice versa. A lot people like to pin verraise as a curse which it is but it’s also the only thing keeping the job relevant and, the casters relatively balanced.

i'll give an example, $25 in paper money is generally better than $25 worth of pennies however, thats only because of how convenient it is but, the $25 worth of pennies is still equivalent to $25 dollars in cash and thus demands respect regardless of how cumbersome or flawed it actually is to use $25 worth of pennies so, the value is the same but it's just less efficient. This is essentially rdm out of progression, it's less efficient and loses some value in that right but it can still function the exact same way and situations where it could work are still applicable unless you're speed killing where resurrection is completely irrelevant.

If RDM gets a buff and loses verraise or it is changed to function as a normal rez spell and it's not stronger than SMN. Do you honestly believe the job will be better off, if so. then what of SMN since these 2 jobs will now officially have the same EXACT niche. Verraise gives the job an identity because nobody is speed killing with SMN because it can rez and, it's illogical to attribute rez in a speed killing enviorment as the reason for why SMN is better than RDM in that enviroment. The only way verraise can be completely worthless is if you're in an environment where death in general is unacceptable and the only time that happens is during speed killing and, thats only applicable to less than 1% of the player base. This is pretty much what xxPheNoMeNais trying to say. RDM's do have powerful utility, it's just not the utility that some want and thus should ask for something indicative of that, not nerfing SMN or overbuffing RDM

Lol, okay what on earth? Who said that raise is why Summoner is better than RDM in a speedkilling environment? Summoner is better than Red Mage anywhere out of bleeding edge world first blinder than a bat progression because its damage dwarfs RDM's, to the point where numbers look comparable to a BLM's numbers, while at the same time providing damage utility on top of it.

That said, I'm not saying I want RDM to be competitive in a speedkilling environment. I would just like the ability to optimize further so I don't feel quite so far behind myself if I were to play a job I like less than RDM.

If we're going to argue subjective value of verraise, I get about as much use out of it as I would a SMN's raise, because my group wipes up in order to understand prior mechanics better before working forward through future mechanics. Sure, I could zombie us forward and we could "see" mechanics further on, but the group would be on the back foot trying to recover, and no meaningful progression will happen.

Being able to spam raises also isn't anywhere near overpowered enough to be mandatory when there are just as many if not more Summoners clearing UwU (not to mention UCoB) and world first UwU was a SMN, not a RDM. For the most part, a Summoner is just as good in progression as a Red Mage, and they're just as good if not better outside of it.

The issue this thread is raising is Summoner is competitive both in progression and in speedkilling, whereas its peers are either only competitive in the former, or are competitive in neither. Before I'm accused of saying "nerf SMN," yes, I think SMN is in a good place because the caster role is fighting MCH and MNK for the fourth slot.

Now, if we're done talking about raise spam, which is an ability I don't think any DPS should have...

I'll repeat my stance:

Summoner is in a good place. It is in the area of balance that RDM and BLM should also inhabit. Red Mage needs a buff in the areas of lining its bursts up with raid cooldowns; an ability akin to Machinist's "Cooldown" would be ideal, as it would allow us to line up with everybody with every minute-to-minute burst. This would allow Red Mage to be able to optimize their damage outside of progression and bump their numbers up ever so much. This cooldown change is something Phenomena agreed with, also.

RDM being able to pick of rez without needing Swiftcast is also a very powerful trait, there are times where this could come up. SMN is really only better than RDM in farm and maybe clear runs. Brute forcing mechanics to have more insight is powerful regardless of the fact if your group doesn’t find it beneficial to them again the concept and idea is enough to give RDM some credit here

World first or even subsequent clears don’t tell you the whole truth. Many groups prog with RDM and switch to SMN once progression is over, phenomena even admitted that he does this, so for all we truly know, RDM could have more representation then the logs lets on.

I do agree that SMN is it a bit oppressive for RDM and BLM because it is doing both of what they’re capable of however do not misunderstand, RDM is a monster in prog and it’s unfortunate that logs don’t show the truth, it’s in a great spot as far as prog goes because it’s so good that it can allow you to push forward but is balanced enough so that SMN isn’t overshadowed and it monopolizes the prog scene.

SMN is really best as a prog late game sweep and it’s up to you what want to use after that. My problem is that the community believes that once they’re done progging RDM is useless because they need to start killing the boss faster or they need to hit higher numbers on fflogs where RDM ability to rez doesn’t increase your percentiles. It’s alot easier to look at logs and say “Smn cleared uwu/ucob just as if not more than RDM so it must be better for prog too” than it is to find out if said groups used a RDM prior to the kill.

You'll have to forgive me for looking at the data before me, and making observations based on it. The way you're putting it, Red Mage isn't even a monster for progression: it's a monster for the first half, and then Summoner takes over and stays the mainstay for the rest of it. You'll also have to accept you're not going to change my opinions: raise spam is overrated, and having a DPS (not a support, not a healer, a damage-per-second) job balanced around its ability to scrape people up off the ground will never feel good.

That said, I have ceded that blatant potency gains aren't necessary either. An ability like MCH's "Cooldown" would work wonders in opening the job up for optimization alone.

Allowing manafication to give 3 free enchanted abilities would help the job to burst with all the buffs on the 2 minute mark, it’d even give them 2 full melee combo’s in a pot window since their mana gauge wouldn’t be expended upon using their combo and give their AoE a lot more urgency instead of having to get to a reasonable amount of gauge than doubling that value. Maybe allow Holy/Flare to be AoE to give RDM some nice options when facing 2 enemies where moulinet won’t be as good.

Consolidate Jolt 2 and impact pls, im dying for this as a controller player. That cooldown idea is kinda neat

That’s fine, like Phenomena said, it’s easy to quote data when you don’t know the circumstances around that data. You’re free to be ignorant of possibilities in favor of spreading inaccurate information that may do more harm to the caster balance than good.

Also fine, if you fail to see the value of being able to push forward and see more mechanics, learning more about a fight, catching raises when healers are being thrashed and swiftcast isn’t an option. That’s your right but it’s there and it happens. It’s not overrated, you’re just undervaluing it

I dont see the problem with this - SMN thrives whenever there are intermissions. Our burst is locked behind Aetherflow whose CD keeps ticking during those intermissions. We live and die by this ability. It'd be strange for SMN NOT to be top. Then something is really wrong. It's just how summoner is designed and also why it really sucks if they die. You lose bahamut and you lose aetherflow and your dps goes down like a rocket. It's all about that Aetherflow.

It's just as easy to parrot Phenomena and spread misinformation as it is to quote data and be incorrect. The difference is, you cannot provide the numbers for the groups who progged with Red Mage, all you have to give me is "Well, it probably is happening."

Likewise, you're missing the value of mastering the mechanics everybody is dying to, and focusing your brainpower on not dying to the current set of challenges, before putting thoughts toward the next challenge. The idea of "finish chewing what's in your mouth before you take another bite." People were easily capable of progressing before Red Mage, and Summoner wasn't seen as some God Emperor of Progressionkind because it had a raise when Black Mage did not.

While I could accept either change, I would prefer the cooldown idea. The differences between your free combo manafication and the cooldown idea is the former puts the rotation even more on the tracks (you don't have to plot your way to a number that will handle a combo and be able to smoothly transition into a second one--the CD just does it for you), and the latter opens up opportunities to synergize with your team to push more out of your job.

I mean, besides a meme, I assigned no value judgment to it, just pointed out that Summoner is top of the charts as far as Ultimate is concerned.

No probs, just making others understand that there is 100% nothing wrong with Summoner being rank 1 for ultimate. It's all due to the way the class is designed. The only thing I care about caster balance wise is never to have a situation like 4.0 RDM vs. SMN where SMN and BLM were complete dogshit and RDM was by far better - no contest. SMN was in a bad spot and only after repeated buffs has it attained a good position now.

I'd just echo what Elevation has been saying. SMN currently benefits from the fight designs for this raid tier. O6s is a better example of what the current dps rankings are and I'm fine with things as they are with a few classes getting a few touchups but nothing major. The game is decently balanced for dps at least.

That’s because I don’t have all of that information, so I’d rather not jump to conclusions when I only have information from a 3rd party website that doesn’t factor in any of that information instead of assuming RDM is getting curbstomped. Wouldn’t it be more beneficial to find out if Smn truly is dominating then make a decision form there. Find some sort of way to contact these groups and inquire, or even just ask in general for those clears in savage.

Sure. In the end though, you'd have to pull it all into data, and then you'd still have people calling your data incomplete. It would be best if we had access to Square Enix's own logs.

If anything, I would prefer that SE stops being scared of people potentially judging a pure damage job as "overpowered" and go whole hog with damage. Maybe 300 base potency Fire IVs are needed after all, even though I've been one of those sorts that have been against the idea since the start, preferring an improvement to Umbral Hearts. But this thread is about SMN, so I'm gonna try to remain focused on SMN for the rest of this.

Raise and Verraise are overvalued when you're not considering prog, since they don't add much and can still hurt a party to rely on it just as much as it helps them push forward. In dungeons, special Duties and in (most) 24-man raids, certainly, Verraise is a great support option that can keep players going. But even IN progging Savage will a party be boned if they rez too much. Rezzing too often will often reduce classes to the point that they can't get past DPS checks, and it's not a very pleasant sight to behold. If we could get past the idea that Raises are powerful enough to be deciding matters of balance, that would be wonderful.

That saaaaid. If SE is too cowardly to buff pure DPS jobs to where they ought to be by comparison, Summoner could easily receive a nerf... to its damage. Improve upon the buffing abilities of Devotion and Radiant Shield/Contagion, and you will find a job that matches BLM after the utility is said and done. And you know what? If Summoner's utility makes it match BLM's full damage in terms of contribution, that's okay. That just means that it'd still be a powerful job, just not the over-efficient job it is now. It'd allow Black Mages some breathing room and a chance to join in. Heck, I'd even be fine if SMN kept their AoE god status, since that'd be a niche they could do well.

Why should we be patient? We are far enough into the expansion and SE have enough data by now to at least look at the job instead of just making changes/buffs to every other job. Some jobs have seen multiple changes

smn is in a fine spot, .. rdm and blm could use help

but Blm wont get help, a class with personal high (highest) dps, wont get a full meta spot (or it will become the most / overused dps)

Rdm is already the most used / best class in all contents, aside of only (speed) kill and farm parties, ... cant give such a class a secure meta spot too (or again, will become overused..., especially since its easy to use)

that said, Rdm could still use a slight dps or embolden buff

Edit: My idea would be let BLM stack more than 1 foul(like 3 fouls) and make it instant cast. That would help both casual players and hardcore players. I find it funny they actually execute part of my idea, that I suggest year ago. You can stack 2 fouls and new alternative "singletarget foul" become instant cast.
