Please Allow 50's to Enter Ishgard w/o having completed MSQ

Also in 10 days doing the MSQ will be the fastest way to get level 50 and all the required ilevel gears (no gear farming anymore within the 2.x msq)

Well, I'm certain that is very appealing for some people, but others also would be pretty pleased with leveling multiple characters. This is one of those situations where addressing the problem doesn't harm anyone. If you like having one character? Awesome, you get what you want. And if you have alt-itis? Well, you also get what you want! It's a win/win/win (SE wins too because we're all happy.)

Just think of it this way, the more people that roll alts to level, the more they're going to keep playing. If that's their playstyle then accommodating it can only be lucrative for the company both monetarily and in terms of public relations. Going forward, as their market expands, I hope they evolve their design philosophy with it to be encouraging of more playing.

I mean, I've not had this much fun in an MMO since... 2006? I really hope it's around for a long while.

I don't craft. Should I write to Yoshi and demand he give me another way to obtain the Ixali mount? I don't PvP. Should I threaten to unsubscribe until they allow me another means to obtain the Swan set? I don't play the main scenario. Should I insult SE for foolishly gating Heavensward behind 2.55? Are you required to have the Ixial mount in order to PVP or obtain the swan set? I believe your argument is a little specious.

You could only accept the quest because you have a DoM/DoW at a high enough level.
And if you level a battle class, you can just do the MSQ as a battle class.

The OP issue was "What if I only want to play crafter of gatherer ?
And actually, Yoshi-P already adresses this. FFXIV v1 was designed so that you can play the game only as a crafter or gatherer if you want. ARR...isn't.

It's one thing that everyone has to do. Not everyone all doing one thing all the time. The msq is pretty small, really, and other than that you get an insane amount of choices. You seem intent to make this either "complete freedom of choice all the time" or "linear game with only combat." ffxiv actually gives you more choice than most other games. the msq doesn't make the whole game linear, just means we all have a common point as adventurers. You're basically asking to have entirely different games within one game. That's not a sustainable business model.

You are defeating the argument though... you have to level a battle class to complete the quests... because you have to win the battles. Good luck beating down a group of monsters solo with your crafting tools. Even if you are level synched, it will still be a hard win--if it is even possible.

Can I ask though? If SE heavily advertises the fact you can do everything on one character, why would they focus resources on concepts that break away from that when they could be doing other things? The demand for something like this is not high at all and only cater to a niche group. Like I said, I am not against a BoA setup, but it simply doesn't make sense to me is all. I honestly think they have done a generous amount in comparison to how they use to work. If this was a game like WoW where you do literally have to start all over to play a different class, absolutely they should focus on perks for alts. However, both FFXI and FFXIV do not fall under that tradition, you do not have to start a whole new character to explore different roles. They worked hard to build a system and balance it so you did not feel the need to make an alt. I just don't see them focusing on this. Maybe they will do something one day, but I do believe they are better off focusing on other more important issues.

Actually, no...
RotZ was tied to FFXI vanilla, and you had to do the main quest until rank 5 to unlock it, BUT, RotZ is also the reason why you're allowed to enter Norg in the first place, yet, you could walk there freely to unlock NIN and SAM.
As for CoP, it's whole plot is started by the end of RotZ, they just don't mention it until very late in the story.

Ah, right... my bad. You stop them from trying it all over again. Still, contrary to what was posted, you don't need to even go barely any length into Zilart to start Promathia. Promathia starts as soon as you enter Delkfutt's for the first time.

They only need a mailbox and /whisper.

I could care less about the MSQ gate honestly...but for all you thinking RMT won't bother you any longer or be able to mine/bot HW new items because of MSQ gates into Ishgard....

Heck, I'm on the side of keeping the restriction but I don't understand where the rmt argument is coming from either.

Yeah, and do you know how annoying it was starting a new character, zoning into Dumbutt's Tower, and getting cutscenes when you didn't expect them?

Ugh, the worst was zoning into Port Jeuno and getting Bad Fanfiction, I mean, A Crystalline Prophesy, started on a character whose sole purpose was to pass out Dynamis hourglasses....

Why do we need achievements to carry over to alts anyways? What -exactly- is the benefit of doing this? No achievement gained earns you anything actually beneficial in the game besides titles, mounts, and minions. I wouldn't say it is easy to just put it in there like that, I am sure there are more complexities to adding a system like this than what is to be believed. It is resources that you have to pull someone who is likely working on something more important to come in and work on/implement. Also, I do think you should have to do the MSQ like if you were playing a new character. There is little to no benefit leveling an alt besides inventory space and if you use it to help fill spots in raids, which even then has seen changes here and there.

I think the system is fine as it is. I won't complain if it changes, but if people truly want a 2nd character to play, they should put as much effort as they did the first one. I have not seen a really good reason why SE should give people access to everything on an alt right from the get-go.

To get the relic weapon though you need to have a basic geared level 50 DoM/W and complete dungeons and trials as well as kill several mobs (for the basic relic). The only thing stopping a player at that point from doing the MSQ is themselves, not the leveling process.

The only logical answer in this whole thread

No crafter needs to step foot inside Ishgard to continue crafting, unless they want new recipes. The same way I don't need to step foot inside frontlines to continue MSQ, unless I want their PVP sets. Crafters want new recipes? Complete 2.55. I want the Swan set? Que Frontlines. Players complained about the relic chain and were met with "No one's making you do 'em." This whole issue with "gating" content, no one's making you beat 2.55. Unless you want the new content. No one made players farm Qarn HM 50 times. Unless they want that Zeta. Don't want to do something? Then DONT! Oh, you do want it? Then GO GET IT! le sigh

Given that the story leads up to the player getting to I'shgard it would make absolutely no sense to allow players who have not completed the story.
We also had members in our FC far behind on the main story and are now caught up, it really does not take all that long if you just do it

Off the top of my head, gating alts is good because it forces you to play through content you might not otherwise have played through, which means you're helping newer people by leveling a new character, and going through the story beats. I do agree that it's tedious, having leveled an alt, but it makes sense to me to keep things gated. The bonus exp from HW should streamline this process. - side note, I think this is how most other MMOs maintain a slightly more newbie friendly environment, by forcing players to start new characters for each new class they want to try. SE has to work around this by forcing us to do lowbie content with high level quests.

As a commentary on this thread in general - I've chuckled a few times at the irony of people complaining that new players will have to play through content to get to the new areas and jobs, in the same community where at the end of every patch cycle the forum and in-game channels are flooded with "there's nothing to do but grind".

Content is content, new people get to experience it just like you did. In regards to alts, I've never played an MMO (or a game for that matter? Even new game+ forces you to play the game again) that lets you skip all of the content on an alt without a price. Maybe "fast track" can be a new cash shop option? Level 50 on the character of your choice and all MSQ flags cleared for 50 USD.

In summary, if you feel bad for the newbies, how about you start a thread dedicated to helping them clear content on your server? Do all-cutscene Castrum and Prae runs. Stop dropping from Steps of Faith. Toss a newbie 50k to get started. This isn't about the newbies, though, is it?

Fact is, for those of us who started way back when, it seems like Main Scenario is such a long undertaking, and as far as leveling 1 to 50, it is. But that's par for the course with MMOs. Consider that the time only seems longer due to having had to wait between main patches and the MSQs that came with them. But if you put them all together, I'd wager they're still shorter than the original 2.0 Main Scenario, and definitely the 1-50 grind.

As it stands, I'm not bashing or criticizing the OP or anyone who may have decided they wanted to focus on crafting/gathering all this time. But as crafting/gathering are NOT integral to the MAIN SCENARIO, then they simply chose a detour that did not result in progression, thus the gate remains locked. SE is always looking for people to help fill up lower level parties, especially in MSQ dungeons/primals. Gating alts opens that opportunity. Alright there is one.

Wait, are you suggesting that the Holy See should open the gates because you caught a fish and served the Sultana a cake? The very same Holy See who would laugh(well that may be a stretch, he doesn't seem the laughing type..) at the idea of letting Nanamo herself onto the Steps of Faith?

I think the point that people are trying to make is that the opening of the Ishgard's gates is a significant event for us, now, and it should remain a significant event for people playing in the future. Access to Ishgard, and everything inside is a major milestone in the individual player's progression in this game. This isn't taking into consideration all of the balancing that was probably considered by the dev team in regards to that section of the game, which I'm sure is one of the major reasons for their decision to gate it.

Also you're suggesting equal progression for DoH/DoL, a concept that was thrown out the window for 2.0, and that Yoshida has explained was eliminated because it took way too much time to consider alternate routes for these classes to take, and ultimately served such a small segment of the player base that it was a waste of time and resources. This was explicitly stated pre 2.0 launch. Crafting-specific players are an extremely niche group that IS catered to in this game, but the devs are not interested in modeling the game around them.

This. The only reason Ishgard even considers letting us through the gates is because we quite literally saved their city from destruction. If Vishap had accomplished his objective at the Steps of Faith the city would have been defenceless against Nidhogg's incoming invasion. We saved them and they recognise that they owe us a debt. It has nothing to do with our reputation in Eorzea or any of our prior deeds that did not directly benefit Ishgard.

As for the story being MMO friendly: you're welcome to personally hold that belief but I think the story works fantastically as a tool to lead players through the content and gradually unlock all the features as you go. I still haven't seen a single new player actually complaining about the MSQ requirement. Everyone complaining about it seems to be a vet player who simply doesn't want to do the MSQ for whatever reason. It's a petty argument stemming from sheer laziness because they don't want to spend a few hours finishing the story. The whole "it's not new-player friendly" argument is just a cover for their personal motivation.

You know the Shia lebouf motivational video would fit perfectly for this entire thread.

Also that we have made allies in Aymeric and Haurchefant through our efforts and through diplomacy that benefited both the Eorzean Alliance and the Holy See. A lot lead up to gaining the Holy See's trust, and I doubt we even have that, truly.

That context is completely lost if Ishgard is opened without completion of the story. This isn't 1.0-2.0, where a major event changes the world for everyone. Progress is dictated by the context of the story - hence why things like primals and several dungeons are gated behind it.

- Again this is all without considering the significant amount of balancing that likely went into the 3.0 content. It's high level content, and in order to achieve that the content should be gated for people who have not acquired the skills to participate in that content.

Commenting on the actual topic, I don't think anyone can claim to be as 'veteran' as some coming from 1.0. I, as one such person, don't see a single problem with having to complete A Realm Reborn in order to unlock Heavensward. I played through all of 1.0's storyline, enough to know that much of 2.0 up until the Garleans is just 1.0 in fresh, new clothes. And yet I didn't complain one bit about it because they are very nice new clothes. The quests, while stereotypical MMO fare, were all refreshing given that each one had a story to it, even the side quests. This is why we play Final Fantasy games, by the way. If I wanted a bland quest engine I'd have played a western MMO.

Yes, I played all of 2.0 even though I played all of 1.0. And I'd do it again, too (which I did, repeatedly, in the Betas). And I'd expect anyone coming after to do the same. Mind, they aren't getting the same slog I and everyone else had because Square isn't as sadistic as people make them out to be. I'm fine with this, too. But the last thing we need is people stumbling through Ishgard without knowing even the first thing as to what to do or why they should do it.

Onto the argument at hand. When I mentioned "we" gain access to Ishgard via our connections, you commented that no, it's not "we" it's "me." The singular WoL gains access to Ishgard, be it you, me, or anyone else in this topic. While yes, it is only a singular person who enters in OUR individual story, there is also a bit of suspension of disbelief for the sake of gameplay. Suspension of disbelief allows us to look over there being 100 other "warriors of light" in Isghard despite our individual story saying there's only one (us). Suspension of disbelief does not, however, allow us to reason that Ishgard is going to allow every talented person into the city simply because they're desperate. They are notorious for not allowing people into the city and proud to a fault. It wasn't until Aymeric that any real progression was made to accepting foreigners into the city. Even now, it's limited.

This relates to what I was talking about in the recent Producer Letter LIVE when I said "If you want to follow the main storyline, you'll need to level up a battle class after 2.0."

For a dynamic storyline menacing battles are necessary. With this said, I’d like you progress through the storyline as an adventurer playing the role of a battle class.

Ehh, I wouldn't go that far.. maybe the Ifrit segment, joining a Grand Company and your reintroduction to Minfilia (which was actually an awesome moment for 1.0 players!) were pretty close, but the rest is different enough (maybe I'm misremembering?), especially the segments in the individual nations. This is not taking into consideration the meteor plot, which was completely different.

Not to discount your larger point.
