I am so very, very tired of saying it and so this amount of frustration is very much not directed just at you but...

The undead dragon should be tanked on the large center platform!!!

There is no reason not to and every reason to do so. Gear has invalidated the damage of the skeleton explosions to the point that all you need is maybe one healer casting a single heal and they can all just pop, it doesn't matter.

Tanking it on the center platform (I usually stand on the square to the north of the center and keep the dragon there) means less time running, no interrupted casts for casters/healers who started casting as the boss became targetable and full positional accessibility for melee no matter the level of the purple floor poison.

I do this whenever I tank that place and I've never seen a wipe. It isn't difficult, it doesn't "strain the healers" as some people try to claim. It's just convenience.

For the love of the twelve keep it centered.

To add to this, when you actually had to do mechanics, you would take the skeletons from where they spawn, to the end of each part. Dragon stayed middle, skeletons dragged out and killed far away so people had time to run around killing them.

Now, they only deal 1k damage when they make it back to the dragon, and healers can EASILY keep people alive by AoE heals...and if they can't they are using sub 50 gear.

All right, I stand corrected about the undead dragon. Killing the skeletons before they can go boom seems to be hit and miss regardless of the dragon's position anyway. I don't recall seeing a wipe either but I have seem most of the raid going below 20% HP from the explosions several times.

I'm not too bothered about losing a few seconds for melee having to move, or casters having to run a bit further in before starting to cast though. Not even when I'm playing those roles. I am bothered when some clown decides to take a shortcut by skipping a mechanic and ends up causing a wipe (which didn't happen here, but did in two other places during that raid).

And while we're ranting, I wish alliance raids were clearer on who should tank what. In trials it's pretty common to see the tanks reaching some sort of agreement, either verbally or through toggling the tank stance, but at least in the Lv50 alliance raids (which is all the roulette gives) most of the time all tanks have their stance on. I guess I could leave mine off to begin with and only turn it on when I know I need to tank something (like during a split phase) or if the other tanks are not doing their job.

I wasn't even aware the skeletons could be pulled anywhere. I thought they just started to run towards the dragon after a second or two and had to be killed really quickly. I've never done the raid when it was actually current; I started playing towards the end of HW and caught up with the MSQ around 4.3.

I think it was around the start of HW, or shortly after, that it started to be a kill dragon, then splat the skeletons ASAP. I just remember when I started(early 2015) that the skeletons were pulled away from middle, and killed, then dragon, then skeletons before they get back to dragon.

Was about to chime in and mention that the bone squad was likely the reason why people don't tank the dragons in the center. but's its nice to know you had that covered.

This will mostly stem from me being new to tanking and new to pvp...and lag.

Queued for pvp duty. This is my third time pvp-ing. What I usually do is stick with the group and heal/damage accordingly (I switch to AST) while getting objectives. Today was different. Despite chat saying stick together or that we need to group up, everyone went yolo. My own party was split across the map, so I didn't know where to go or what to do. Of course, we lost. I mean, I've lost the first two times too, but at least those two times, the groups were mostly coordinated. I queued again and finally won my first pvp since the group was well coordinated, so it was easy to know where to go.

Queued for alliance raid. Got labyrinth then lagged badly.I was late to the atomos part (and to most of the rooms as well), and the atomos was still alive in my screen for quite a while after dying. The lag disappeared during the last boss. Needless to say I screwed up, especially the behemoth part.

Queued for MSQ. I asked if I could be MT since it was my second time in it as a tank. Took a while to activate the first console and died in the second one. How do tanks do these two parts fast and w/o dying XD?

You have absolutely no idea how wonderful it is to have explained something to someone in this game (or just outside of it, I guess) and to have them like... listen and learn. We don't even need to totally agree, it is what it is, but thanks for that either way.

As for the tanking thing, yeah it can be really annoying. I tend to just MT by default because I know at the very least I'll position bosses well, use CDs to help my healers and generally be like... a passable tank? If you're in synced content and you know your dps rotation well enough without there being a gear disparity you'll likely just be able to hold threat after openers go out by virtue of being the highest dps of the 3 tanks. Provoke wars happen sometimes but I usually find the boss back on me before long.

I do think turning off your stance is an option, just as someone who mostly plays healers and dps if you do so please remember to keep an eye on the MT. Many times I've had a boss eat my face as a dps because the main tank died and no other tank stepped in immediately. Having your stance on prevents this since you'll still be above your whole party in threat.

I didn’t even know the skeletons exploded.

^sometimes if you notice you get a sudden sharp decrease from everyone HP, like they just plummet of all sudden when you were busy hitting the dragon, thats from the skeleton explosion.

people call it explosion but its not exactly "explode" more like dissolve and a large aoe ring expanding coming out from them, thats the explosion.

I don't recall seeing the skeleton explosions while the dragon is alive. Especially not multiple at once, which is pretty much necessary for a really noticeable HP drop to happen. The skeletons only seem to appear after the dragon is "killed" the first two times. Maybe that's another thing which doesn't really happen anymore after the gear inflation?

Another story. Weeping City of Mhach, i'm tanking on GNB again. During the add phase of Forgath (the second boss), the succubus doesn't get focused fast enough and gets a seduce off. Most of the raid are killed in the following AoEs, but me and the healers of my party miraculously survive. I immediately pick up the boss (B tank had him so far) while the healers go to town with raising people. The first Hell Wind gets me killed because I don't realize what it was and I probably had a dot or something. I get a fast raise and take the boss again from the healer he ran off to. Subsequent Hell Winds do not pose much trouble. Some people were quick to return to start and asked us to wipe it, but we kept going. Might be starting over would have been faster, but damn if coming back from that near-wipe didn't feel good. Mad props to the healers who were able to keep me alive and at the same time raise most of the remaining players across all three parties.

Practice, timing, and luck. I tend to not worry, personally, instead grabbing everything and running backwards so the AoEs don't hit the marker for everyone. No real issue if I die.

Asides from the gear squeaking by on ilvl. were they popping their def. cool downs on the big pools. I noticed with a lot of new players when i play healer for funsies they don't pop any cool downs whatsoever. Something to keep an eye. Some people don't know and its a result of just being carried through for 73/74 levels others simply don't care and will expect you to heal and not dps.

Okay I decided to heal the Level capped roulettes,and started with 80.

1. Akadmeia: The reason for the title. My all too typcially slow speed prevented me from reaching the tank in time and he thus died. Tanka nd DPS died but the mobs never aggro'dme or the SAM (I moved to the right side of the building and the SAM was between packs,) we tried again but one of the DPS left and then we wiped, the other DSP decided to quit and after a few mins, so did me and the DRK.
2. Twinning: We did much better there (Helps that there was only one pack before the first wall) And I managed to become the competent healer I know I usually am and we cleared.
3. Anamnesis: Things also went smoothly bar a wipe to the last third of trash.

How would an SSD help here though? It should only affect loading times, and no one can leave the start area before everyone has loaded in.

I feel like this is server/internet lag and not something an SSD would fix.

It sounds like you're really talking about character speed. A lot of times tanks will sprint while pulling big mobs to put themselves out of range of their auto attacks. Try to save your sprints for when you see the tank sprinting, so you can get to them in time for those precious heals.

Also you can hit the tank with a shield or Heal Over Time to help keep them up during a sprint pull, before they get too far away from you.

If its more of cast timer issue, try slotting some quicktongue materia to any gear that isnt already maxed in that stat to help get those spells off faster.

If it truly is slow hardware, the SSD might help a little but it sounds like you have multiple issues going on. Maybe just let the party know ahead of time so the tank is more aware of their proximity to you. Not all tanks will care but some will appreciate the heads up and will work with you.

Be aware that a heal over time may get you unwanted aggro if the tank fails to hit some mobs as they run past a pack. I prefer using shields for this reason, and only apply heal over time once we've arrived at the killing spot.

I would like to make a formal apology for anyone who ran with me and my family last night in some random dungeons courtesy of the DF. The tank (my husband, WAR) got quite drunk, listened to too much Nightwish and decided it was at this point he would make his great and glorious re-entry into the world of tanking after being away from it for something like 6 months or more. The runs were somewhat chaotic, to say the least, but I have been through worse. We did bunny-hop a lot, and I didn't even have the alcohol or Nightwish excuse.

Our daughter (DNC) dutifully informed all our randoms at the start of each duty that the tank was drunk and she was sorry. She did not bunny-hop, btw, she was just embarrassed because teenager. She made a good point of "expressing doubt" with her father regularly. He forgot tank stance a few times which had me screaming at him (I was healing, SCH), but we were steamrolling through nicely if chaotically. Daughter eventually had to go to bed because she's a kid. Her dad was not finished however, so I stayed with him. It's after 1am at this point and although I usually quit using my brain at 11pm, it wouldn't be right to let someone else heal this drunken reprobate who is taking WAR's overpower cone to new dancing heights - he's never, ever done this before quite so... dance-y. If you will. He was still listening to Nightwish and putting lyrics in the chat periodically, so I can only think he was Overpowering and doing other WAR stuff in time with the music only he could hear. :o

So, still not done, we end up in the Dorkhold. I thought I was just very tired, my heals weren't as punchy as they could be; his health was dire and he needed lots of healing. Eventually, with barely any health left on Batraal, tank hubby just keels over dead, pretty much as he's typing an LB request. I had just healed him, and I'm internally screaming again about how his health had just zipped right back down and now he's dead and I couldn't stop it. One of the DPS LBs and the boss is down. I res the husband and ask him what he thinks he's doing. He has no idea (he's normally quite a decent tank) and I'm like, "you have cooldowns, use them. Thanks. Don't drink 'n' tank next time." He said he had used cooldowns. I went to bed, very tired, and was asleep before he was.

He wakes up this morning with this revelation: "I know what happened last night. All my gear was broken!" Turns out he'd doubled checked after I'd gone to sleep. He apologised. :D Have no idea why I didn't examine him in the first place, but then I'd normally trust him to take care of that stuff himself because he usually does.

So, again, apologies to anyone we ran with last night if the forays were tedious, or just odd. I shall try to ensure it doesn't happen again. I am just glad I stuck with being his pocket healer for the evening, I really would've hated to put that on anyone else! :)

On keyboard, if you have nothing targeted, numpad 0 will (in theory) select the nearest targetable usable object. If you have a usable object targeted, it will use the object. If you have a dialog box up, it will select the default option. Detargeting any mobs and hitting numpad 0 repeatedly should thus target the console, use the console (popping up the 'do you want to teleport' dialog), and pick the default ('yes') option in the dialog.

It can grab enemies, but as a whole it does work like this. It's useful, but a badly timed series of attacks will break the targeting.

More seriously, this reminds me of one of my final duty roulettes before I stopped playing originally back around Heavensward launch. I got Haukke Manor and the tank assures me that he knows this one like the back of his hand and I can go ahead and turn on Cleric Stance to focus on DPS. Tank proceeds to eat several AoEs, and get turned around at the first corner in the hallway and wander back to the entrance. At which point he remarks, "i might be a bit high".

I turned off Cleric Stance again.

Yeah, hence the "(in theory)" qualifier. Numpad 0 slapping works the way I expect it to about 90% of the time.

The remaining 10% of the time, I am tanking and I'm like "Welp, guess I'll probably die. At least everyone else got through!"

I just got out of a very painful vale run on an alt GNB where I had the following:

-A whm that was somehow wearing the 45 job hands, pants and feet, but 1-31 on the rest, including a 29 walnut cane. Her cure 2s were healing me for 700-800 hp. They also had just over 2k hp. She never used a single aero the entire dungeon.

-A drg that was also 47 but had not done any of the job quests, as they were using lvl 1-35 gear, including the 35 Shellsplitter you get from the Temple of Corn. He would also try to stand next to me and eat boss cleaves. His hp barely broke 2.2k.

-A mch that I realized was being quite lazy with gearing up, as they were using a mishmash of lvl 30-32 gear plus a few crafter pieces. Oh, and their starter 30 gun. Their hp barely broke 2.1k. They also had several 80s plus decently-leveled crafters. Hmmmm.

On to the nitty-gritty:
-First few sets of trash took a while to clean out, as the MCH was the only one AoEing. The DRG was naturally single-targetting as I did not hear a single Doom Spike go off, no Disembowel the whole dungeon.
-We wiped to the first boss twice as our WHM kept running out of mp and being utterly new, which I understand. I suggested regening herself first, then me, then the dps to keep everyone up along with everyone staying close for Medica. Everyone's hp still melted faster than ice cream on a hot summer day.
-The DRG also though they should be the one stunning, thereby eating up the boss' stun resistance on boss #1. This made getting my fruit more difficult.
-Trash up to the second boss wasn't bad, though it took longer than what I'm used to. Because lol what are self-buffs and Holy?
-Second boss the DRG keeps stunning the boss, making him immune to stun JUST in time for him to eat Swing to the face. The second boss fight I saw 3 Swings go off. The DRG died twice to this guy because 'lol what's stun resistance?' I had to explain after the fight about it and why stun spam was not a good idea for certain bosses.
-The rest of the dungeon I had to keep the pulls small since the WHM's Cure 2s were still pitiful. I wanted to ask if she had better gear, hell I wanted to ask the rest of my party if they had better gear, but I kept my mouth shut.

The last boss went no better than the entire dungeon: each Burr Burrow after the first stack would munch about half of the rest of my party's hp, and even though our WHM was actually doing a decent job at keeping the party up, the DRG and MCH also nearly ate it again when they hit 3 burr stacks each. Like, 90% of their hp would be just insta-nuked. The WHM would be 95% insta-nuked.

When we finally downed the boss, I made the mistake of looking at the time remaining. The whole run took about 33 minutes. It was painful, and I don't want to do that again.

I just had a DRG in Orbonne that was...
1. Always running around
2. Only used Aoes
3. Only used said Aoes on their MAX range
4. Read chat but didn't listen that he should come to his alliance on TGC
... he did eventually stay with us after my initial rescue and me saying he should come over failed and he died twice due to being out of healing range


It kind of hurt to watch it since he ran AWAY after using his jumps, too...

So, got a rather odd Castrum Meridi run from MSQ roulette yesterday. We get the alert that there's a new player to the duty (legit surprised by this but hey, free poetics, yeah?) Anyway, both tanks decided to dip right after the first cutscene mid-pull towards the first boss. I think they took one of the DPS with 'em? Anyway, a SAM gets appointed party lead and the SCH in the group volunteers to tank until our ranks replenish. We tell the SAM how to request rank refill. Nothing happens. We're slowly pulling our way towards the bombable pipes, we've got a bard and me, a dancer, as DPS vomiting out AoEs while the sch helps keep things in check along with the AST. We eventually decide that the SAM's not gonna try to refill ranks, the other two DPS have bailed so we vote kick the SAM and we work our way to the pipeline. Not long after our ranks refill and the run goes smooth from there.

Just, geez, I know Castrum isn't Prae, but dipping as soon as the gate drops is so uncalled for.

Queued as a tank and decided to actually play tank in pvp. Lagged hard to the point that I spend almost a minute in black screen when I die. Queued again as tank and switched to AST, no lag O_O

This was an odd one. Did expert as tank with a healer and a dps friends. Got into Anamnesis, the other dps was a BLM and it was apparently their first time (they said nothing but it was obvious).
After finishing the first section they go: pull big!!! And then seen that was actually boss time and not pull time, after the boss again: now pull big!!
Ok dude, first of all a dps doesn't tell you how much to pull, tank and healer decided that, cause if they can't survive big pulls you're dead too. Second, since they were saying pull big I thought they had some great dps that'd make packs melt, but in the end their dps was abysmal and packs were dying terribly slow even though the other dps was very strong. So it's a weird one.
We thoguht maybe seeing the packs in the first part come one by one they thought I was pulling them like that myself on purpose? xD

I had a SAM who only used Hissatsu: Gyoten, Yaten and Enpi at lvl 72 lol.
This was in Holminster Switch, I have no clue how he managed to get that far.

Me ( DRK ) and a MCH basically had to almost solo the whole thing because the healer who was a friend of the SAM stood in everything and died at every boss.
The SAM went afk for almost the entire way up to the second boss, you can imagine my disappointment when I noticed the abilities he was spamming.
I tried to help him but he didn't listen and the healer didn't talk to him about it.

The entire group decides about big or small pulls, DPS included. If they can't survive big ones, means someone didn't do their job out of 3 roles or the entire group wasn't the best at the moment.

I disagree on that. If a healer isn't capable of healing big pulls/doesn't feel comfortable healing them, nobody should force them to, same for a tank. Not being able to handle wall to wall doens't necessarily mean not doing your job. And i said this as someone who always pulls wall to wall by default, but also as someone who knows that not everybody is comofortable with them and it's fine. It's not savage, it's a frigging dungeon. But in any case the lowest common denominator (aka the only person not pulling their weight in the run) shouldn't dictate to pull bigger.

I've been getting Titania a lot in trial roulette lately, and something that's confusing me is why the right to left kill order for the adds has become the norm when it actually puts more stress on the healers/tanks then doing it in the opposite order.

Killing the adds does not stop their AoEs from going off after they become huge, but it does prevent the two tankable adds from auto-attacking, which is fairly significant when considering how hard they hit.

A good question honestly. Have you done it in another order and the non-tankable one didn't like blow up or anything? I'm curious now if we've just stumbled upon a bad strategy and kept it for no reason.

The only thing Mustardseed does is that fan of narrow cone AoEs in both phase 1 and 2, which are a non-issue because there's a fair bit of open space to his sides in both phases and everywhere behind him in phase 1.

I have a hunch that people are killing him first strictly out of force of habit from running extreme because you do need to kill him first there to prevent a wipe from the slow cast he starts after his first AoEs go off.

Sometimes you just need to step out of your comfort zone if the entire group agreed on how fast they are going to go through a dungeon. If said healer doesn't agree, he can leave or adjust. It's not savage, you only need to press 2 more buttons than usually.

The only thing Mustardseed does is that fan of narrow cone AoEs in both phase 1 and 2, which are a non-issue because there's a fair bit of open space to his sides in both phases and everywhere behind him in phase 1.

I have a hunch that people are killing him first strictly out of force of habit from running extreme because you do need to kill him first there to prevent a wipe from the slow cast he starts after his first AoEs go off.

I think you are right about EX. You can also burn him down a lot quicker and can use an LB on the other two if needed. I know I find myself in normal going to the same spot as EX out of habit too, especially for the knockback and don't use anti-knockback there for the same reason with the brambles in EX. As a healer I don't find any stress though in either, unless tanks aren't grabbing aggro on Puck and Peaceblossom in either version or of course too many people get knocked off the sides from the knockback.

This has always been a weird mindset to me. It's a group thing, and if a healer isn't comfortable doing it or just flat out isn't capable of doing large pulls, the group should not be doing them. Yes, then can boot the healer, but that doesn't and won't help the healer with it. Work with your teammates. It's really that simple.

To be fair, there was a new player bonus, but no-one spoke up, so I just assume they wanted to go in blind... long story short, the healers did a lot of rezing of the dps. For my part, I shouldn't be running things when I've barely slept, so two of my deaths were me accepting a rez at stupid times (gg), two were me thinking I had an orb when someone else grabbed the same one I went for, so cut to me looking at the screen in confusion when I die to Divine Judgement Volts or w/e it is... brain not work atm, oog. Cut again to me telling the healers to leave my butt in the trash where it belongs.

The other deaths of myself, healers, and other dps, well... people decided they didn't need to move their purple markers away from the party, despite seeing me and others moving them to the corners each time we had them. I saw the SMN dump hers at least twice in the middle of the arena, along with the DRG I think (might had been the other tank, since they were watching the cutscene when we zoned in) which killed myself and a healer. Clouds were in the center multiple times, and killed people multiple times. I don't think the SMN rezed a single person, despite the healers rezing them often for that exact purpose. At one point, someone flat out said to rez the SMN for more rezes. What did they do when they got back up? Stood on my corpse and just looked at it, despite having the mana to rez after popping Lucid. My dude, you killed me and a healer at least twice, and yourself multiple times. Come on...

Would have been a complete wipe after both tanks somehow died, had a healer not used LB (they were the only one left, I think?), and then finally towards the end, the other dps moved their clouds to the corners... better late than never, I suppose.

TL,DR : Pity the healers in my Fulmination run, and move the bloody clouds to the corners, please.
