I think there are multiple ways to have a trans character without making it crude.
A character with a female body but uses male prounons? (One Piece did this, not without controversy though)
Or a Sundered Ascian who prefers to use male bodies despite their initial body being female.
Or a character who regularly changes gender through Fantasia.
Or showing that a character used to pass as another gender as a side-note through an echo flashback.

Of course Square Enix is not forced to do it, but if they wanted to it could be done tastefully.

-Estinien turns down Zero. Mentions he's not interested in relationships. That could be a gentle way to show he's ace
-Alphinaud blushes like Zero did when seeing a shirtless dude.
-G'raha admits to having a crush on the WoL, which would make him bi depending on the player char
-Alisae already seem to mega crush on the WoL
-Uriage(I can't spell his name i'm sorry) just suddenly starts being refereed to by they/them, because off screen he asked the other scions to, and at one point when you say 'he' he's like "Ah, wilst though say 'they', for it is a better fit". Unless a single line is forced too?
-As a non-scion example, we just meet someone with a seemingly male body who is refereed to as she. Though from my experience that makes a lot of gamers really mad(Baulder's gate 2 expansion drama, had a character who 4-5 text choices down the line would say they used to be a boy. Made gamers extremely mad to the point they mad mods to murder the character.)

Not saying it should happen, but it happening when(afaik) none of them have canon sexualities could work, and would be realistic. Though no matter how it's done people would see it as forced because they have their own headcanon.

Saying there's no way to have it happen without it being forced is kinda unimaginative, no offense. There's lots of ways, the limit is the writer's imagination. I'd much rather a new character, though, to adding it to an old one, if only because it gets exhausting seeing people use it as proof there's some weird agenda(Not saying you or the other person are saying this)

Edit: Random trans idea? A jerk character who knew the twins when they were young makes a snide "You and your sister" to Alisae, revealing Alphinaud is transmasc. Doesn't have to be brought up at all really, just a "Yo leave the boy alone" and show it changes nothing.

Well said on thos remarks. Characters like Estinien, G'raha, Alisae have not really even show any interest in the opposit sex/romance anyway, so I really do not think them turning out to be LGBTQ+ would be some magical switch. Like you said, there are a lot of imaganitive ways writers can show thses things without it being forced. Mistakes of other studios handling does not mean these should be considered 'taboo' topics to explore.

How... how does their post say anything like that? All they suggest is like, one off lines at most. Theres more sexuality being expose in NPCs talking about Thancred being a ladies man, Krile teasing Alphinaud about how he would be embaressed around girls, and not to mention Urianger’s arc with Moenbryda ect.

the problem, which western people tend to gloss over, is the game is meant to be available in many countries with many cultures and many people of differing values on ratings boards. something benign in one country/culture could be a raging fire in another. sure, its a grand idea in concept, but in reality, would never fly. so SE and the writing direction, would never implement the concept in a mmo that it intends to have broad appeal.

and yeah, its a "fine request" until you actually check all the other "requests" along these lines that the OP and his multitude of alts have put forth. the first one, had it been in good faith, would have been a fine request, but repeatedly? its now just trying to cause drama and be in your face about it.

I am more talking that it's sort of forced, at least the original idea is, if you really think about it, there is no need for any of what I quoted in my previous post to happen, now if you want to make new characters (and please god i hope that happens, msq is so boring at this point with the same characters all the time) and for the new characters to be gay,bi or trans or whatever else, there's too many genders at this point but you get the idea, I'm all for it, as long as it's done in a smooth way without forcing it

To be fair hearing the person is a flamebaiter kinda explains this. I've been in the lgbt community for a long time, and the most I've heard is LGBTQA+, and one thing anti-lgbt people tend to do is add a ton of random letters to make it hard to read. Sidenote, if you ever see them add a "P", it's a 100% absolute sign that they're an anti-lgbt troll.

"2S" in this case means Two Spirit(I'm assuming), but most two spirit people I know(Grew up in Oklahoma, Two Spirit is a native american thing) just consider themselves trans, so they're covered in the T.

True, there may be no real need for that information to come out (ha) but that can be said about many things we know about these characters. If we have a quest where we must find out what the Scions favourite donut filling is, does the game suddenly become about feasting and denying savour treats? Is that what a MMORPG should be? Frankly when it comes to RPGs, I want to know more stuff like that. I am the type of person who will go through ever dialogue tree option. If the stern military leader has a secret love of romantic fiction, I want to know! Characters risk becoming flat and forgettable if all we know about them has to be tied directly into the story beats. Thats not to say we have to find out characters preferences that way, or that the writing fails if its left a mystery, just that I do not see how finding out that way as some sort of knock on the head with a big pink mallet, perhaps so long as the conversation is not straight (ha) away 'Hello person I have never seen before, I am a lady who likes other ladies and will only talk about this for the next eight hours.' Frankly thats anoying enough when some RPG characters trope is just 'flirtatious ladies man'

Plus, no video game is prefect with all of its themes and how it handles character interactions and involvement. Just because past cases have felt forced in some peoples eyes, that does not mean we should cast the idea as taboo or pre-judge how a game may do it. Like I have been really enjoying FFXVI and love how Dion is used, but I could also write an essay on how the writing fails on other levels, in regards to some supporting characters and how some of their themes are explored etc. Creating a new character who is not heteronormative may well indeed be the best way forward in regards to less ‘controversy’, and honestly after the way Dion has been received I think this will happen in 7.0 or beyond, but even then there will be those calling such an act forced or moving the goalposts. You see it even when original LGBTQ characters are revealed, and especially in the rare occasions where trans characters are involved, given how they are most bigots #1 target at the moment.

Honestly I feel I lost the 'Updated name' memo, because the only people I ever hear use that expanded definition are people complaining about it. Most don’t realize it but they are represented in the world by their own player characters and their interactions with other player characters. In an mmoRPG, player characters are as much of a part of the world as non-player characters. When we think about it in this way, we realize that there might actually be overrepresentation in this game.

Do some people go too far and make outrageous claims sometimes? Believing rubbish like ‘all trans folk are trying to force kids to become accepted as cats’ is akin to believing that ‘gay people should not be allowed to teach children’ or that ‘bi people are just confused’. Thats whats infuriating in many ways. The current rhetoric being used again trans/drag folk is the exact one they have used again other equality movements decades ago, yet even LGBTQ+ folk can be blind to that fact. Plus every march for equality gets labels as too ‘radical’ and forceful. Civil rights, gay rights, now trans rights etc. History white washes them as civil debates won only by polite talk over tea, and not the true fights they where (Samuel L. Jackson himself got arrested for helping barricade collage trustees in order to push for equality changes!) but thats perhaps another topic for another time.

Personally, as a gay guy, I'm only really interested in 'representation' if it's handled tastefully and isn't played for laughs or forced where it doesn't fit. I liked the relationship between Dion and Terrence in FFXVI not only because both men are conventionally attractive and don't conform to negative, performative stereotypes but also because the story just lets their relationship play out without drawing attention to it.

It's a vast improvement over Square Enix's attempts to promote Andrea Rhodea in Final Fantasy VIIR as 'representation' when the guy is a sex trafficker working for Don Corneo who is at no point held accountable for the part he played in sending women to their untimely demises at worst and 'playtime' with the sleazy Don Corneo at best.

I wonder about this too, I grew up with gay godparents and I am straight. I learnt to be accepting people that have different preferences and they taught me the difference between normal people that are straight/bi/gay etc and those that take things too far and are not quite right in their heads that do things to the extreme to try and get a message across, people should not be those kinds of people because they can do damage to a childs mentality.

If you're considering that "hate", then you're already acting in bad faith. If they want to add that stuff in, they will, but adding that just for the sake of having it isn't going to lead to anything other than it feeling out of place. I understand why there should be a community, I grew up tormented because of my sexuality and I would not want that on anyone [I still hear horror stories even from the young of today]. Actually, I still am not free given I have to face religious zealots putting "It's wrong to be gay" all over our car. (I once had one stalk me to the grocery store which was rather...unpleasant). Also weird given I'm from the north-east and these problems are typically not problems, and before someone says something, yes there is still hate and discrimination going on, we just tend to look the other way. The issue nowadays though I see is that, yes we need a community to prop ourselves up, but the community we have atm is just too accepting/naive (also misrepresenting) and because so, doesn't know what it actually represents. Thus it accomplishes nothing or at least not as much as it used to accomplish.

In FFXIV, I'm not sure representation is needed although it does make for more of an immersive game play experience I guess(?) I would welcome said characters. Though immersion aside, there is already a lot of things that let's you experience that expression of freedom like clothes for example. There are a plethora of options available from dresses, gowns, what have you but there are still a lot of things that are gender-locked unfortunately. I think I would prefer those being unlocked or reinstated if they had a unique version prior but was then replaced. (Thavnairian Tights for example) {I'm still snarky about that}

I'm sorry, have you even been to a drag show? It usually is rather tame with people in drag that just lipsync and dance. It's not everyone's cup of tea and it's certainly not mine, though I typically catch a show now and again by happenstance from being in bars, events, what have you. And yes, there are those that are gaudy at the bars sure but those drags usually know what their demographic consists of (adults), if they do behave outlandish outside and know that their demographic consists of children then they shouldn't be entertaining period. This goes with basically any entertainment job though and should be common sense.

I will get hate for this, but I liken drag entertainers to be more relative to clowns. They're there to entertain but only in select settings. As they're so unusual, those settings tend to have to revolve around them. Just like a clown however, I'd totally be okay with a drag performance at a birthday party for my child, if my child wanted it. I feel we ostrocize that which we do not understand, and I get it, weird things are weird, but we shouldn't let that be the boulder blocking the road to an open mind. Not saying you're not open-minded but perhaps go to a drag show and experience it yourself it's definitely different than just taking it for granted at face value. I just started experiencing the world in a different light myself, not taking things as they're told but going the mile to see it for myself. I think it's a refreshing way to look at things to be honest.
