ShB had "cute" flying pigs as the solution to tempering. It had matoya's relict, dwarves, beast tribes, il mheg playground, scion anime moment, graha worship moments, etc etc.

I honestly don't know how I feel about the Hildibrand/Relic connection but I'm kind of sick of seeing Gerolt (and probably Rowena) being connected to the relics again. :B
Anime moments...yeah because dead people showing up to aid the heroes in HW isn't anime at all. Us escaping the Prae blast at the skin of our teeth isn't anime at all. Har Har villians that monologe in ARR and HW isn't anime at all. The church ultimately being "secretly" bad isnt anime at all. The heros being split after Ul dah yet somehow coming back together due to happen stance isnt anime at all. I could go on and on. ARR thru SB weren't these Uber dark n gritty expacs folks claim imo. It seems death counts and the absence of light hearted anything equates to better writing to some. Its almost like a fetish at this point or something.
They need to try new things

No Stop!
Yeowch, I'm in the minority here. I adore the Hildi quests, they were actually one of the main reasons I picked up the game in the first place (saw a streamer doing the HW ones and laughed my ass off, stopped watching as I wanted to experience the rest myself). This overall seems like less of a pain than the previous two relic grinds? For now at least, gonna need more info. I never finished Eureka and I made it through Bozja by the power of my FC mates scraping my meteorite charred corpse through the grind (I wanted to see the story for Hrothgar lore, but knew my brain was too smooth to remember all mechanics for every fight). Slapstick comedy isn't everyone's thing and I get that, but I'd personally rather weather cutscenes and the queue for one trial than attempt to get competent groups for the required raid series for my relic grind unlock.
Also, look on the bright side: more people queueing for Kugane Ohashi means more chances at winning the Yojimbo Barding, eh? ehh? :D
Ahhhhh..... this is probably one of my favourite things from the live letter. Both seeing people cry about being "forced" to do side content, and just knowing some of my favourite content in the game are coming together (Hildibrand and Relics.)
I'll be the first to say some of the HW and Eureka relic weapons we're huge pains in the asses. I for one am glad to see them doing something new with the relics (Obviously we don't know much, but it seems a little different this time around.)
I still expect grinding in later steps, yeah, but *sinking tons of hours into steps like the fate grinding in Heavensward with nothing else BUT that was kind of.... how do I put it..... boring. I don't mind the grind if it's got some flavour in it.
I really am curious why people think they are "forced" to do any content. Nobody is forcing you to watch cutscenes, to even do this content. Yes, Relics are fun, but if you're going to whine the entire time about the process to get it, what's the point? It'll be bis, maybe for a few months before crafted/raid gear overtakes it again.
It's to be expected imo that people won't like it, as is their right, but this is still a video game...... You get to choose what content you interact with.
And hell, I'm gonna be enjoying 6.2 a LOT.
I didnt say there werent "anime moments" but they were indeed darker themed, the main cast had consequences and didnt get everything handed to them so there was a proper balance between light hearted and darker and meaningful. Whereas now its heavily skewed towards fluff light hearted moments and the main cast always getting what they want with 0 consequences. But sure, denounce it as a fetish if thats what helps you understand these things. ?Yet you claim to not argue in bad faith in other threads lmao please.
Either way i would rather actually get a canon story that contributes to the world building and lore of the game rather than a series of comedy non-canon side quests that contribute very little to the story but....seeing as how fanserive and cute adorable moments gets everyone screaming and crying i guess thats the crowd theyre catering to now.
A problem with this gonna be lore inconsistency lmao.
Gunblades were invented by hrothgar X Many Eons Ago, guns as in mch were invented by Garleans, reapery is an ilsabardian craft made by the losers who cant manipulate aether like races with actual souls, Scholasticism is a lost Nymian art, Summoning is straight up nonexistent beyond our job stone so how is the Manderville family in posssession of such armaments?
Unless it is all a joke and the weapons are just "old thing we have the WoL might find useful" which could very well be the case, but in such a case I hope we get Godbert or his wife's hammer/pan as a War weapon.
Keep your personal gripe with me out of it. I said it SEEMS as if thats the case. Never called anyone wrong or stupid for it. I swear every chance you get you have to try and pin me on something and it's pathetic. I'll say again PUT ME ON IGNORE if youre so pressed my dude.
I don't think things are heavily skewed at all. In fact I'd like to find out how much of EW is serious and how much of EW is light. Like time wise. Just for curiosities sake. And it's so weird, cause when EW IS serious alot of you guys just call it "streamer/Twitter bait with no substance". There is no winning for the writing team with you guys it seems. The story can't have fun, can't let the characters rest, has to kill folks off etc. To be worth anything. Also you claim everything is handed to the scions...which is objectively false. Takes like these is why some folks come here and clown on you guys man.
True! but then none of those have like...a purpose in the story and Thancred still got his gnb shit from Rostik, not some rando on the First.
Though that does beg the question of, "why werent relics on Norvrandt?". Im sure loads of people would have enjoyed a relic story about a different worlds culture.
(And frankly they shouldnt have done Bozja until they bothered to make a single female hrothgar model but whats done is done now theres a nation with no opposite sex of its native race on the Source).
Except the writing team did win in Heavensward, the Doman Arc of Stormblood, and (specifically) the base Shadowbringers MSQ before things went off the rails in the patches. The Ultima Thule nonsense? That wasn't serious, that was something that no small amount of players saw through immediately and realized it would be a giant fakeout zone but every streamer that has gone through it ends up with "the feels!"
More and more people are agreeing with and waking up to the fact that Endwalker suffered from horrendous pacing for an expansion set against the literal apocalypse. However, more and more compromises are being made in favor of the meme-loving Hildibrand and haha catboy burger crowd while the rest of us who wanted a coherent story that respected itself at the bare minimum are being pushed further and further away, straight into the arms of whatever title manages to provide the experience we're looking for.
When FFXVI releases if this game is still in the state that it's in now in terms of its story and content, then why should I bother returning if other single player titles release in succession during the leadup to FFVII: Rebirth which won't be that far off from 7.0? Goodness help FFXIV if Dragon Age 4 manages to actually release, because then who knows how long I'll be absent for while I play that. Should I seriously bother going through another expansion of these job changes and new writing direction that goes directly against the kind of storytelling that made me fall in love with this game in Heavensward?
It was completely irrelevant to even state. Why say it in the first place? I dont have a personal gripe with you i just find your hypocrisy funny. The only "serious moments" in EW are nameless or irrelevent npcs being kiilled off. Everything is handed to the scions. thancred even laments at the end of Ew that acocmplished averting a universe decimating apocalypse with not even a scratch to show for it. Theyre brought back to life over and over again and never have to actually suffer anything despite that being this expansions theme. Compare that to ARR or Hw where the main cast actually had to make long lasting sacrifices and faced consequences for their actions and had losses....you know, the theme song for this expansions? Loss and fire? Where the loss on the main cast side this expansion? As for the clowning....i dont think this community has the right to clown on anyone considering the community managers for this game are diaper wearing fetishists but i digress...
Yeah I have it unlocked up to EW and I will just skip the quests as I do not care for Hildibrand at all, heck I may not even do the relic which is kind of a shame as relic is usually the piece of content I look forward to the most every expansion. I will say this is increasing my overall dislike of EW and how much it pushed "levity" in it's story. I will still probably find enjoyment in other content yes but man having the long grind associated with a quest chain I despise, yeah I would rather go try for finishing another Eureka relic while fighting against the overinflated NM health due to bunny fate bots or finally finish the ARR relic I gave up at book step.
i really don't get peoples fixation with wanting main characters to die... i get it, it would be "shocking", and yes there was a time with a lot more death on the good guys side than what we have now, but is it really so important to kill of part of the main cast ? lord of the rings doesn't kill of any main cast after halfway into the first book and even has gandalf "die" and come back even more powerfull than before and it's still considered one of the greatest fantasy epics of all time. Or for anime/manga fans take one piece which had 2 non flashback deaths for the first 1000 or so chapters. why on earth are people so obsessed with main character deaths as if this is the absolutely only way to get a compelling story ?
Everyone demanding seriousness in the game while almost the entire main story in EW was serious and they managed to stop a world ending bad guy, let the cast rest and just do what they planned to do, to just adventure.
Ya'll need to lighten up you're all miserable.
You severely underestimate just how quickly the Hildibrand questline goes by when you hit 'skip cutscene' on everything. I went from zero Hildibrand on an alt to the start of the EW one in effectively one evening. Just take the time to marathon a podcast/TV show/anime/whatever on another monitor.
There's also the fact that ivalice can take forever to pop or be wipeapalooza if you're unlucky, whereas everything in hildibrand can be unsynced super ez. (Kugane Ohashi would need a few people tho, but the rest can be solo'd.) When you factor in everything like queue times, possible wipes, etc. Hildibrand really isn't that much longer than doing all three ivalice raids + all the unlock quests between them (especially that long one between Rabanastre & Ridorona)
I'm also amused by the fact you just instantly assume that being tied to hildibrand means it won't take itself seriously. You do realize Godbert has actual serious lore behind him in the many instances he's appeared outside the Hildy quests right? No doubt there will be comedic elements, but there is literally no indicator the storyline won't be serious or explore the world's lore. The scholastic quest series has literally proven you can reference the Hildibrand quests and still tell a lore-building, serious story. Until this relic weapon series drops, doomposting its gonna be zanny hijinks and comedy 100% o the time is a waste of energy.
Oh, is it time for yet another thread to be derailed into why Endwalker sucks? Just want to know so I can stop reading.
Did you consider that perhaps I wanted to enjoy engaging content in FFXIV instead of watching netflix while I play through boring quests or fights? Whatever additional lore is locked behind those quests isn't worth the hassle to me when I can just watch that on Youtube and still understand the story.
Only full on Scion deaths were Papy and Moen iirc. ARR and HW was full of nameless npc deaths. Yet that's OK but not in EW. And did you really just use a joke Thancred made...as evidence that it was all handed to them...like legit did you just do that? I guess the scions sacrificing themselves to pave the way for us with no guarantee on their part to come back is just a nothing burger. Hell didn't Thancred stop Meteion from finishing us off right then n there on the ship? Am I dumb or did these things not happen? And sure the threat of turning didn't effect the scions but thats due to them all having solid foundations as people. Same for folks like Vtra and the Sharlayans. This is stuff built up from years ago. Characters of that caliber aren't going to just constantly suffer n suffer when new things arise. (Maybe they still would if they didnt take ample to time rest and avoid burnout which is also something folks dont like it seems). And if they did I'd bet you'd call that boring cause then them suffering would be the norm and samey.
Also on wat basis are you claiming CMs are diaper wearing fetishist? And you call ME a hypocrite. Come on man..
I think, if we're talking about ShB, that's it not so much about wanting anyone to die, but how much the scions kept "flirting" with death while not actually dying. So many situations would have been certain death for anyone else, but they have such a strong plot armor and are basically mary sues at this point. Y'shtola and Thancred more than the rest, honestly. It's hard to take a character seriously under those circumstances. And at this point we know that whatever they go through they will never ever really die, so it kills any sort of tension. Even EW with its "all my friends sacrificed themselves""just bring them back". We just know that nothing bad will ever happen to them, no matter what they go through. Which I guess for many it can be a relief, but for others makes them less believable.
Back to the same conversation on a completely unrelated thread.
Honestly? I love this idea. I cannot wait to see just how the story unfolds and how Hildy, Greg and the others are involved in this epic quest. It will be a nice change of pace from how relics where forged in the past, I hope. As for it being locked behind a quest-chain, thats fair, but I like how they are giving players a reason to do the older content. It does not feel too different to me from how the Shadowbringer ones where behind the SB raids.
I mean no offense but I simply came here to leave my feedback I am not pleased with the direction of EW and it's content thus far. I understand why some people may be fervently making arguments about that given even I have to question "You can just netfilx something on the side" as a recommended way to do the content when I personally would rather unsub then be told "just don't interact with the content then". Why would I pay a sub if I am not interacting with the content, by that logic I can just youtube everything and save 15 bucks a month. As stated previously the relic is something I always look forward to and seeing it is stuck behind a quest chain I immensely disliked really makes me consider the direction of EW and how much it no longer seems like the game I fell in love with in HW/SB. I absolutely understand people having such strong opinions and feedback if they are starting to see a direction they disagree with which arguably goes against what they believed the game was prior, the point of forums is to bring these concerns forward.
Overall I would say EW is a massive disappointment on several fronts and this just adds to a pile for a lot of people.
Ok, and that's fine. I'm not trying to pick a fight with you and you're perfectly fine with being disappointed. I was more taking umbrage with those who get needlessly hostile with people in discussions like these. You're being polite, concise and getting the reason why you're disagreeing known without punching down other's opinions. I sincerely wish you find something rekindle your love with FFXIV sooner than later.
You're one of the few people on the forums I have seen put it really well, and though I am on the opposite side of the fence I can see more clearly now the frustration.
I think people are too ready to kiss the ground SE walks on in regards to story content sometimes and forget that this criticism is to be expected and should be heard out just the same as the people who loved it.
