Actually saw someone saying that "Hrothgar players always complain about what they get, you should be happy you got anything" and wow did it take a lot of willpower not to reply.

We never complained. We're not Viera players. We haven't spammed the crap out of any of SE's streams, and we complain so little that there are people still surprised we have to buy fantasias to change hairstyles.
Some people just hate Hrothgars for the sheer principle of it. Some people just white knight the hell out of SE's weirdest decisions. I'd bet that person thinks Fellowships are the best system ever implemented and uses it every day to organize Lord of Verminion runs. People like that were in this forum just yesterday, and I honestly just feel sorry for them. Just ignore them and move on, we have better stuff to worry about.
If it happened to them, they'd likely be the first to scream and whine. Hrothgars have had to endure this for years, dealing with worse than Vieras did. And we didn't make half as much drama. That alone already speaks volumes about how the playerbase and the players actually react. Not the hallucinations of some random.
I still remember being happy that Hrothgar were announced, but wherever I gone there were people saying bad stuff about Hroths because they wanted their male viera and yadda yadda
And this here, I agree 100%. If any other race had this problem it would be way worse in terms of people complaining. We may be a little niche, but we're a race in game that needs attention as much as others.
You know, I don't even need them to explain why it was possible for Miqo'te or Au'Ra. I think a better comparison is "Why were the VIERA able to keep their ears and not Hrothgar? The viera kept their ears for all of these hair styles and SE claims that they supposedly had the same challenges and modeling issues as the Hrothgar. Hense the no hats.
Sadly, the answer is probably...just that they were lazy. :(
heard about the hair thing for Hrothgar quite a bit long ago and I was already skeptic at that time. My skepticism only as far as "It'll need Fantasia, I'm sure." But,
After I saw the actual news, um, I'm kind of disappointed, but not surprised.
It looks so unfinished and sad, if this is an April fool's joke, it's definitely the worst I ever had in like, ever.
I'm not gonna hope for anything at all about these Hrothgar hair, nor do I hope if it was just a(n) (un)funny joke but if this is -actually- a real thing.. Might as well keep Hrothgar as is.
I love my ears as is, too, thank you very much.
TL;DR right before: By guess they won't be able to, because reasons.
Technically Au'Ra heads have same issue as Hroth, having their horns connected to the heads. Still the hair styles are completely separated, and not bound in double combos like with hroth. Why so?
For Miqo, the ears are also "attached" to the head, but having a gap between head and ears for the hairs, allowing the ear twitching without deforming the face too much by doing so - although it's covered by besaid hair.
Viera have heads, hairs and ears completely separeted, leaving ultimate freedom. Even more than Miqo already.
With Hroth? I see more the problems around the head shape and less with the all blamed ears. Some parts of the hair meshes float around, while others dig deep into the skin just to pop out elsewhere again.
But as mentioned: Nothing a bit of tweaking cannot solve. Lowering the quality by maybe 1.5% and giving additional 300% freedom of choice. Good deal, I'd say.
If clipping is the big issue here, why caring all of a sudden? A lot of Au'Ra styles are already a big clipping show, and no too many cared too much so far.
After all, I take it with a phrase here: "Nothing is eaten as hot as it got cooked"
We will see in around 10 days how it will work and look, if everything shown was an April's joke...
And if people are literally forced to use mods to solve a problem, that shouldn't even exist right from the beginning. And with that I'm not even aiming for new hair styles at all.
i don't want to give up the fight, but at the same time the 14 team and Yoshida went ultra quiet right after the LL and havent spoken a word since the end of the stream. i want to hope and pray that these were just a joke and not actually what we are getting, but to leave that joke unbroken all the way to 6.1 would be just cruel on their part.
Im bracing myself for them to push it through to live because they apparently given zero Fs about our opinion on the matter.
Made an account just to reply to this, since I've been keeping myself updated on it since the LL.
You know it's real bad when you haven't just upset an entire race's player base, but also a lot of people who play the other races who aren't affected by these 'changes'.
They honestly look like wigs and I'm shocked they even got passed QA yet alone were shown on stream. How is the state they are in acceptable?
It just feels like we're becoming ignored or just given crumbs and then that's it until who knows when. I'm beginning to understand why so many people who play Hrothgar think the devs hate them and showing off the hairstyles in that state would've just strengthened that mindset. Even I lost a little respect for the devs for what they showed.
I do hope Yoshi-P makes a Lodestone post saying they'll fix it rather than come up with another explanation of 'It's game engine limitations'. How can the man ask the player base to not use 3rd Party Tools, but then release something in such a poor state that people feel the need to use them because they just want what the other races have?
Just need to echo literally all of this, down to making the forums account to say it.
Hrothgar are literally the only reason a friend got me to try 14 again, and to see this be the result after nearly 3 years of waiting has been frustrating at best, infuriating at worst.
Expect eh worst, hope for best? Matching the majority of Endwalker's topic, heh.
Let's see if the outcome also results in an happy ending here.
For now there's not much more left than collecting as many negative voices as possible. And be it only for dropping a joke like that towards a part of the player base, which already had the feeling of being at the lowest end possible and acting surprisingly peaceful so far.
As a player, who constantly chooses beast races wherever they are, I'm pretty used to the lack of options. But together with former WoW options (connect beards+ears and eyes+face around Worgen) always belonged to the lower end. Still don't regret chosing Hroth, and always keep like that. But it's really time for a properly made update, all free of wigs.
Just my 2 cent negatives around that shown stuff.
They really need to show the ears. They do it for Miqo'te (though sometimes poorly) they should do it for Hrothgar. I'm hoping they were kidding about the ears being under the hair and that it was a work in progress.
During the LL I was hoping to see them laugh and say "April's fools joke! We got you good guys!" then proceed to show the actual hairstyles for Hrothgar. But, no. It just ended...
I continued to look at the screen in disbelief at what I just watched. I have told one of my FC mates that Hrothgar is going to get new hairstyles, no more buying fantasia to change your precious locks! Only to get disappointed.
I tried to talk to them and they said the same thing as many people in this thread, 3+ years for Hrothgar to get an ugly wig super glued to their head and a free ear amputation.
And the devs should know they messed up when even the non-Hrothgars and the Japanese players are upset.
I am still in disbelief. I have rewatched that scene 10 times already, I expected them to laugh and come out with it as a badly done joke, but...they just laughed... it hurt.
I do not play Hrothgar, that is because I like playing female characters in MMOs so I am more waiting for Female Hrothgar to be released (with what I have seen though now I am getting worried that they will be made poorly). This felt like a slap in the face. I am deeply disappointed.
And as a 3D artist that has gone to university to study this, I find it insulting that they would put such emphasis on the model when it can be easily fixed. Just by giving the Hrothgar the Miquo'te treatment. Separate the ears from the head and attach the mesh to the "head" bone of the rig while keeping the offset of the ears mesh location in place. That should separate it while keeping the parenting of the mesh to the rig. In simpler terms separate the ears from the head (like in the case of Viera and Miquo'te) while keeping them connected to the rig. Thus letting them have the hair without the aforementioned ear amputation.
And before people ask, yes I have seen before the ear disappearing glitch (though it was not ears, but horns. But that is beside the point) and I managed to fix it by doing as stated above separate the vanishing body part and locking it to the rig (you could even modify the rig to have ear "bones" and that would make it even easier).
At first, my reaction was the same as everyone else (confusion and outrage), but I decided to look a little deeper into it and found some things to be a bit odd. Right now this is a compilation of all the information that was found:
1. It was the 70th Producer Live Letter (PLL) to be broadcasted, but it was the first of the PLLs to be broadcasted on April 1st. There are no other examples of what they would do in this particular scenario.
2. What they showed were printouts of Hrothgar with different hairstyles rather than a demonstration of how the hairstyles would look in the game. I point this out because it's not just an aesthetic implementation but also a technical one, as Hrothgars don't even have a menu for hairstyles, and it would have made logical sense to show that menu addition as well.
3. All of the hairstyles that were presented in the printouts were most definitely not presentable first choices.
4. The Hrothgar ears are part of the head more so than the hair. In order for what was seen to exist, they would of had to model new heads with ears that would be toggled off visibly when changing to those hairstyles. If there was a decision made that would be called lazy, then it would be to just add the hairstyles menu, slap on the Roegadyn hairstyles and call it a day, which would have actually been far more presentable. If what they showed was actually in game presentations, then it would have taken more time and effort to do it. This has me speculating of the probability that those printouts were photoshopped or purposefully forged in some way.

All of this is tempering my own rage, as nothing about this presentation is making any sense. If there can be teleporting underground bots, then how difficult would it be to make hair and hat mods than can be seen by other players? A personal opinion that I have as well is that usually when something is presented that can be perceived as controversial, then there would be an apology in some form or another. However, there was neither an apology within the live letter, nor after it. All of this has me, at the very least, suspicious of the whole thing. So I will wait until the release of 6.1 before taking any action. If this turns out to be real, then my actions will most likely be rage-induced and reflectively regrettable.
it is the worst kind of joke honestly. not only is it in extremely poor taste, but to pull that kind of thing on a group who has waited nearly 3 years to be given what they were promised is... well in the interest of avoiding a ban from the forums i'll skip the colorful description and just say it is a major jerk thing to do
It's not an April Fools joke. They wouldn't do that. Sadly what you see is what you get. As I mentioned earlier given the reception they should pull the release and fix it so they don't have to pull it later. There are people who will like it and then it becomes harder to change.
the general sentiment has been extremely negative and outraged. i don't know of a single person who said "oooh! earless cats! what a novel idea! 2B Hair on a Hrothgar? Sign me up!" What worries me however is the absolute silence on their part. usually they'd come out with a statement, an apology, or something. Also i noticed a very distinct absence of any sort of mention of the Hrothgar hairstyles on the Twitter official page which was releasing information on everything that was covered in the LL. So it definitely stood out that it got no mention whatsoever.
Thats actually something I told my BF when I got out of class on that Friday morning. I was like "Hey. Check the FFXIV_EN twitter page. Its not even listed on there...." another friend said they may have been embarrassed about the general reception of it, but of course there would be backlash. They *removed* a literal body part of a race and tried to play it off as "LMFAO its hiding under the hair".
Traditionally, you're meant to inform people it was an April's fool prank.
But honestly, despite this not making any sense as you said, I don't know? Like, it's not normal for them to go out of their way like this to make something that they'll just discard. It looks like they had a lot of effort into changing how ears work just for this. It feels like it's real, it has every indication that it is real. Surely we've had heard something about it by now if it weren't, no?
I think the time of day should be the hint that it wasn't an April Fool.
Yoshi held those up at about 10pm their time (well after Midday JP time), 1/4 of the planet was already on the 2nd of April.
It's unfortunate but if it were actually an April Fools joke, Yoshida would have immediately followed up the reveal of these hairstyles with 'April Fools! These aren't actually real in game representations.' It'd be pretty bad to keep a joke going for this long.
That aside as hrothgar player myself it truly is disappointing. Both the hairsyles and the dev team's stance on it. I cant help but wonder if hrothgar were as popular of a race as say... viera, would the limitations still be as prevalent as they say they are?
alright lets cut back the roe hate here. There's nothing wrong with roegadyn, although this is my personal take since I play roegadyn on my main and to me theyre the best race in this game
THAT BEING SAID, this is just asinine on the dev team. I dont play Hrothgar nor am I that interested in the race but even I think this is just insulting. Hrothgar players have been waiting years for hairstyles or at least have better freedom to swap current hairs without resorting to fantasia and I was just laughing off my seat when yoshida showed these pictures. Its awful. No Hrothgar player will ever accept this and from the looks of it this sure aint it chief!
Im so sorry for you guys, I seriously hope the backlash for this is strong enough to force the devs to do these better. At the very least give them their ears back!
The fact that they were laughing while showing them off... They know they look awful, but still went with it. Pretty disrespectful to many of us if you ask me.
Its always funny to me to see Square Enix hold itself in such a high, borderline conceited way but then when it comes to putting effort into their biggest game they cant even put hair on a cat man properly.
Roes too deserve better both in-game and in the community. Sincerely, someone who played Roegadyn up until they released Hrothgar.
Really guys, no one cares about whether or not you would go X race over Y, that isn't the point of this channel and it's just completely uncalled for. Because remember, this may be happening to Hrothgars, but if the standards keep being lowered, one day it may happen to you. And even if it won't, if it could happen to you, you definitely wouldn't want people bashing on your choices like this.
My friend says that Yoshida looking aside each time and simply chuckling rather than actual laughter should be an indication that he's not happy with what he had to present. But at the same time, I am wondering about that. Yoshida does have to approve what gets done, and we know that he's fairly controlling about their work and when they do it. Which makes me question... either, somehow, Yoshida approved something he didn't want, or he just had to make do with what little they could do.
Which maybe it means that they didn't have time to do this? But if that's the case, it goes against what we're told their normal workflow is, where things tend to be looked over at least once before approval. Meaning someone decided on this, someone made this and someone approved of this. If they're understaffed, they should have had foresight before saying they'd implement these things. Which are decisions that have been going around since 5.55 iirc? If they just didn't have time, then it's still a weird lack of foresight because it means they didn't allocate the proper time or resources into making this.
One thing is certain. Some level of quality assurance failed here, unless this is somehow seen as acceptable to them. Which given what I heard about Yoshida's reaction, them thinking it's acceptable doesn't add up. So it's really hard to understand whether he's not happy with the result or if he was knowingly laughing at how bad the end result was and shrugging it off.
I don't know, something isn't quite right with this whole situation. I'm just trying to understand what could have happened before criticizing people any further. Especially since I under no circumstance know what their actual policy or workflow is.
And one more thing about all this. Hrothgar hairstyles didn't even get posted in the main FFXIV Twitter account, @FF_XIV_EN. There's no mention of them there at all. So either they once again neglected Hrothgars, or they know they're not presentable.
As someone who is more heteroflexible and occasionally wears maid and other dresses from time to time, I don't have an issue with a selection of feminine hairstyles. However, I am disappointed that the selection isn't an equal variety of feminine or masculine hairstyles. If the windcaller hairstyle was included then I'd be happy and content with that and the snow cut. But not only is that not the case but they trim off our ears too ><
I'm a very experienced 3D Artist. It took me 25 minutes to figure out how to rip from the game, and throw this together:
https://i.imgur.com/gCsoLGV.png
While it does look significantly better with ears, it goes to show their hair choices were abysmal, and nonsensical.
just.... so much better with ears
but yes, even with ears, the choice is very questionable
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FPZdtBgV...jpg&name=small
Some concept sketches thrown together today, playing with the idea of the unique hairs we were promised
wait, this WASNT an april fools joke?
and here i thought they looked bad on viera... this is just awful.
I hope they walk that back.. it not being shown in the twitter gives me some hope. I'm happy being a hroth right now, but I have to say, I was hyped for the hairstyles and now I'm a little bummed out because of all of the negativity surrounding it. I want to see what will happen on the patch.
What has me questioning it is that this is the first live letter that did air on April 1st, on April Fools' Day, so we can't make the claim that this is an "out of season April Fools' joke". There's nothing to reference this exact scenario, and I wouldn't put it past him to aim for the long game of a joke to make us think that it is real when it's not. Also that the ears connected to the hair is a provable lie for the current heads, and a new head with toggle-able ears would have to be made in order to make this happen. Why discard the current head for that? There are too many factors that has me questioning that presentation. It's painfully obvious that it is bad, too obvious...
Don't get the wrong idea though, it's not that I'm excusing it, but it makes no sense to be mad about it now. Rather, I would use this time to think about what to do when 6.1 is released. What would I do if it was a joke and what would I do if was real? I do have an idea of what to do if it turns out to be real, but I'd want to think it through if I really want to do it, because it will be self-destructive on both sides. If it is a joke though, I will throw away those plans, and just laugh so hard that my neighbors will think that I've lost my mind.
