I agree, FFXI players are why almost all of the player base up and left FFXIV barely 2 months after release.

We know that's not why but they polute these forums with their nostalgia and their wet dreams of a FFXI-2. We don't need this, XIV does not need to be a XI-2 and nothing good will come of it if it was.
I want this game, like everyone else minus the FFXI players, to be a HUGE SUCCESS. Meaning i want it to be WOW successful, and while i know we will probably never had the number of subscriptions WOW has, I'm still hoping this will become good enough to have 5 mil subscribers and more. The fan base and potential is there.
This is a MMORPG, and thus i want this to have as many people playing as possible. When i login, no matter what time, date or server i chose, i want to be no shortage of people i can play and share this new FF adventure with. As opposed to this becoming a niche with probably only FFXI's old fanbase of about 50k pple and that i waste hours just trying to find a good group to play with.
For this game to become that successful, it needs to please and attract as many people as possible and that will only be achieved by offering as many options, gameplay styles and pleasing as many gamer tastes as possible.
We can't achieve that goal by focusing on a group that is already small and who is already willing and playing that game. We can't achieve mainstream success by limiting ourselves by what we can do and offer. We need to give a little something for everyone. you want NM, FFXI features etc... sure... have them, but don't deny me what i want or what someone else wants and finds fun. By giving everyone something they enjoy we will make this a lot more appealing to the masses rather than by restricting ourselves to what 8 yr old game had to offer.
we simply dont want jump for the obvious factor of having everyone abuse the hell out of it in every corner. i like that the game feels structured, it feels like another believable world. if you add jump, you cant deny everyone is just gonna be jumping all the time, every second just to walk down the road and that kills immersion cold.
its about the feeling of a believable world, and this is the one game along with FFXI that you actually feel like its another world of PEOPLE, not PLAYERS. there are plenty of other games that have those features, theres nothing stoping you guys from playing those, but some of us want to walk down the road without seeing 15 people jumping around like idiots.
Its a bit unfair to generalize the FFXI playerbase, I have friends of mine who where (and still are) FFXI players but are excited after every patch and change announcements. It is true that they do are not begging for a jump system but they aren't against it.
To some point I can agree with the people who do not want a jump feature, for the most part they are afraid that the immersion from the world will be gone and that it will look silly to have many people jumping all over the place. Its a valid point and it is true that this is a very likely scenario (especially in the days following the implementation of the feature). But I think that not being able to jump over a fence or an obstacle of any kind and having to go around is far more anti-immersive. Getting around in the world in its current state feels like having magnet-boots on a metal planet :( .
But I think this game can be good with or without jump. Both obviously have pros and cons, its just a matter of how (if) they implement this feature.
Cheers!
Not even one of the reasons, I've been keeping up with a lot of gaming sites in both Japan and western shores -- FFXI players aren't the reason they refuse to return to XIV, the fact XIV is still for all intents and purposes a bad game compared to X MMORPG as they say, is the reason. You just really dislike FFXI as well as people who play it, which is cool, but don't think for a minute just because someone else plays another MMORPG by Square Enix they're why no one wants to play FFXIV. You should remember how Square wanted people to play both MMOs, hence the discount for those who played both.
I've yet to see this, what I do see however is people who are heavily against FFXI's existence spinning everything around into someone wanting a FFXI-2. However using this line of thinking, anyone who wants Jump is basically wanting FFXIV to turn into (MMORPG)-2, I can listed quite a bit of MMOs that would make XIV a "-2" but here's 2 examples:
I can jump in Eden Eternal, therefore FFXIV would be Eden Eternal-2.
I can jump in Rift, therefore FFXIV would be Rift-2 with a jump feature added.
The only thing on these forums is people who've played FFXI saying SE should have taken the good and what worked and made it better, not turn Eorzea into Vanadiel, otherwise those wanting XIV to be more action based wants this game to be another Arborea (Tera).
Yet tons of people said that the same thing can be said about emotes and any other feature, everything can be abused. Not only that but we gave you solutions, like putting a cooldown for jump so it doesn't get abused. But still you act like you didn't hear us and come up with the same old and tired argument that was dismissed a hundred times. And to put some weight behind your argument, you quote FFXI.....
I played XI, i played WOW, Aion, Warhammer, LOTRO, Ragnarok 1 and 2 Beta, Perfect world and i'm forgeting some I'm sure. But the point is i played many MMOs and seen different aspects of MMORPG game play. You on the other hand like most FFXI fans, haven't played anything but that so how can you argue that the best reason for not having jump is because FFXI didn't?
Street fighter 2 didn't have super or ultra moves, yet i'm not gonna say SF4 doesn't need them. Times change my friend, you need to evolve and let go of your nostalgia.
While I don't agree with the people who don't want to see jump in this game, a person expressing their desire to not have jump is not the same as wanting the game to be ffxi-2. At least I don't think so.
Unfortuneately, Yoshi may remove jump because of the complaining. Because generally when something is implemented or is going to be implemented, the only real feedback they hear are the complainers. The most vocal are the one's who dislike something, the one's who like it are generally playing the game.
Jump should be implemented, the reason is in the OP. Where he mentions ifrit. When he throws down the void, you can slowly run out of it or you could instantly jump out of it. 1 or 2 secs of void damage, or no void damage. Hmmm, its not rocket science incase your wondering which i'd prefer.
I used to be a FFXI fan, i played that game for a whole year. Every single day for hours and hours and i did enjoy myself very much. Made great friends and good memories. I loved that game but then stopped playing because it was eating too much of my time.
Then a friend convinced me to play WOW, i was hooked after the first day and never looked back. Once i got tired of WOW i tried other mmos out there, like Conan and Warhammer and liked what these games had to offer to and let me tell you that while i had only but good memories of FFXI, it is very outdated. It doesn't cut it anymore.... they are way behind everyone else and just don't provide or satisfy like any of the newer mmos, even the ones who failed.
It was good while it lastest, when it was it's time to shine, but now the genre has evolved and it couldnt keep up. So why would i want 2011-12 MMORPG to be like a 8yr old game that has been surpassed by other games countless times before?
Which is kind of funny, I couldn't jump in Rappelz..so why is no one saying people want FFXIV to be Rappelz-2 if they don't support jump?
I couldn't jump in Ragnarok...why not Ragnarok Online-2 then? o.O This is exactly why those who say "You want FFXI-2!" just really refuse to actually undestand the concept of "take what works, make it better and profit, not throw it out and make people think you've never made an MMORPG before."
They bring up FFXI because:
Quote:
Final Fantasy XI:
Developer(s): Square Product Development Division 3 (pre-April 1, 2003)
Square Enix Product Development Division 3
They've created 2 successful MMOs prior to XIV, including another Final Fantasy title, which had all of the basics as well as 10 years worth of experience including content creation -- This is why people bring up FFXI but it doesn't mean people want a FFXI-2 when people say Square should have taken what worked from XI and incorporated it into XIV. Making a -2 would FFX > FFX-2, which took place in the same world, same people, same storyline but it also added a lot of new features and refined the battle system.Quote:
Final Fantasy XIV:
Developer(s): Square Enix Product Development Division 3
I've only seen a couple of people say XIV shouldn't have jump because XI didn't..I've seen a lot more say it shouldn't because the game doesn't need it currently nor would it solve problems by just adding it.
first off, the reason i mentioned FFXI was because i was giving the example of immersion not the fact that they didnt add jump also. read: "along with FFXI that you actually feel like its another world of PEOPLE".
second: any action can be abused sure but its not something that would be an obvious unaturality. people can smile and laugh all they want, it happens in the real world, so one person abusing emotes doesnt ruin immersion. however, everyone on screen jumping over and over again to walk does.
third: there is nothing wrong with being a fan of a game and liking what they did, and as you said: "Times change my friend, you need to evolve and let go of your nostalgia." jumping doesnt need to be the standard anymore. your the one trying to make it into the same as everything else. like the games that you yourself listed. but times change and you need to get over the fact that a game doesnt need to be good just because you can jump on every house, swim down every ocean, and fly on every bird you find.
adding a cool down would be more tolerable, and i will say, i didnt see that listed so dont act like im the entire "jumping con community" however it would need to be adjusted to not be too long and too short, along with the fact that adding jump is adding another dimension of movement and thus causes alot more problems which will also need to be heavily adjusted and i think they have enough on there hands.
and the problems i mean, adjusting collisions on every object you can reach, what happens when you land on top of something, do you stay on it or slide off, can you use that to reach places that arent intended to get to, and then that breaks things.
and i would lasty like to ask you to control yourself, theres no need to pop a blood vessel on someone who just started talking in the conversation. dont assume that everyone knows everything
It might not be your case but i've seen many say they wish this to be FFXI. I'm not refering to those who simply want 1 or 2 things that FFXI did right, i'm talking about those who openly say they wished this was FFXI-2 and not in terms of world or lore but how the game plays etc.
WOW is by far the best MMOrpg i played and enjoyed it very much but if Blizzard were to come up with WOW 2, i wouldn't want it to be the same game with better graphics. I would expect a complete different experience. I would expect it to have the standard features of course, but i would want it to offer something new and different. If i wanted the same experience over again but with a new story i would just go back to the original and wait for yet another expansion.
ok, i'm sure this has all been brought up before but i would like to mention it anyway.
I only hope they will be smart about adding in the jumping and swimming, keep it with the realistic feel. Perhaps have a stamina bar so you can only jump a certain amount of times, maybe have it like ffxiii where you only jump at certain points where it's needed or auto hop over rocks in your path. and think of this, when was the last time you jumped in real life?
for swimming, again please make it realistic. Can you swim in full plate mail? how about even just in normal clothes, how long could you tread water? they should make it part of the game where you will need to change equipment to swim through water or maybe a requirement to fight a creature at the bottom of the sea that you should wear heave clothes. on top of that they will need to have a spell or some kind of item to help you breath underwater if you want to have underwater battles. (think Final Fantasy I, how you got to go underwater to fight Kracken.)
I'm all for swimming and jumping as long as they do it properly. and if you are adding in jumping and swimming, how about climbing? (shadow of the colossus) My initial reaction to these concepts was to push back, i really didnt like them. after thinking about it for a while i have come to realize it may not be terrible just as long as they do it properly. Please Yoshi-P, if you want to add these features, be smart about it and keep with the ambiance of the game.
I doubt it. Could happen, but I doubt it very much. If the producer were still Tanaka, then yeah we wouldn't even be having this debate cause no way jump would ever be added. But with Yoshi... I don't see it happening. He's already proven he will go ahead with changes he feels should be made if there is no valid reason not to. The few people still stuck on the anti-jump bandwagon aren't going to change his mind.

Its offensive in the way that you stated it. A moderator removed your post. QED.
Imagination has absolutely nothing to do with having players hop all over the place like in Rift.
Perhaps you would like to state the reason why you would like to see Jump added to FFXIV and why rather than attacking someones statement or idea with an ad hominem argument.
If you wanna jump, go play Super Mario Bros, there's a loooooot of jumping there.
If they do put jumping in the game, I hope it is similar to fantasy zero's jumping. Making it so jumping doesn't become exploitable and unattractive. You shouldn't be able to jump in cities. A jumping system similar to fantasy zero will allow players to use jumping in a more strategic manner so that it is situational and doesn't become something that is best mindlessly repeated. For those that do not know what the jumping in Fantasy Zero was like, it is directional and similar to dodging I guess. Jumping quickly to the left, right, back, or forward. This is followed by a short pause to the player's movement that keeps it from being used in a thoughtless manner. In any case you should be able to travel faster by jogging, but cover a short distance quickly by jumping to that spot. Also a PvP simlar to Fantasy Zero's would be amazing.
Onidemon, you must be my brother from another mother because you respond before I can; saying pretty much what I want to say each time. Regardless, let's not get carried away with the "FFXI-2" debate cuz its a waste of time. Stop giving Jennestia something to type at. She, and the many others against jump, just want to win this argument on any level possible. "Jump looks stupid!" What a stupid argument, and it's the only one they've really got.
There's good reasoning behind why Yoshi wanted to implement jump, and its very simple. The year is 2011 (soon to be 2012). That's it. It's the same reason why every single first-person shooter out there no longer plays like Wolfenstein 3D or Doom. It's the same reason why FFXIV has an action bar palette of skills to choose from at the bottom of the screen. Let's be real; Final Fantasy XI copied all the good mmo's of its time... namely Everquest.
What people (especially FFXI players) are forgetting is that we're dealing with Square Enix here. Not Blizzard. So if SE decides they want to add another dimension to the game like jump, then you know it will be done beautifully and with respect to the way they make games. They just added jump to FFXIII-2 and it's awesome, because SE did it. Not Blizzard. I think we all (especially FFXI conservatives) have to remember: Square Enix is making this game. Not Blizzard. If Yoshi (Producer and Director at Square Enix) wants to add jump, let him. Because I'm pretty damn sure they will all do a fine job implementing it.
As for all these "bunny rabbits" jumping around in all the other mmo's out there. Call me crazy, but why in the world does that even bother people?! You people that hate jump consider yourselves some kind of Final Fantasy elitists who think our game sets itself apart from "all those other mmo's" because we are glued to the ground like prisoners of some Gravity spell. Get over yourselves. Is seeing people jump really going to ruin the game experience for y'all? The answer is NO. It won't. You guys will still play and enjoy this game regardless and forget about this whole debate. Seeing people jump shouldn't drive ppl insane, and if it does... then y'all got problems and need to see a therapist for something so menial like a fundamental mmo mechanic. Get off your high-horses, stop setting yourselves apart from the rest of the world, and accept that MMORPG games have evolved.
Jumping. Swimming. Climbing. Flying. All these have made major impacts in the genre. If any of these are ever added to a FINAL FANTASY game, it would be awesome and welcome. Especially because SE would be doing it. Not Blizzard.
Here are my suggestions for Jumping:
1) Only allow jumping where jumping is needed (contextual jumping)
2) Have a cooldown on jump so people don't using jump as their primary mode of transportation...
Jumping should have a need, not be something to do because you're bored.
I'm all for swimming however. Could you just imagine having to swim under a lake to reach a shrine to fight Leviathan? :D
Well said Zaireeka2025! :D
Honestly, would it kill for both sides to meet halfway on this?
A structured jump feature gives both sides what they want, more or less. You can't bunny hop all over the place and you can't try to get "out of bounds" but you'll still have your ability to scale/jump cliffs and fences. You walk up to a fence and you get a prompt to jump it. Tie that prompt to a key and boom, instant terrain jump. Same for cliffs. At least with a structured jump feature, animations can be adjusted for the varying sizes of the different races.
As far as swimming goes, I would actually be fairly happy if it was in FFX and had whole areas devoted to underwater segments. But not bobbing around in zones that don't actually have a use for it. A whole underwater dungeon would be cool, having to swim to it and do some "dry" areas of it.
The zones in 2.0 simply need to be designed for it, and I think it would be beneficial to both sides if it was prompt based instead of free hop.
this was the funniest thing i've seen all day. this post was nothing but garbage. 2012, thats it. lol what?
because SE is doing it. thats not proof, games reference other games and all i've seen in other mmos is stupid jumping.
i have herd some good ideas going out by other people who didnt waste 1/4 of a page. like having jumping be in specific areas to get over things, and having cooldowns.
you guys know our argument and we know yours, stop wasting space and time and think of solutions.
thank you to everyone who is actually trying to compromise
I'm going to repost this as a response to meeting halfway (I'm pretty sure most will agree with me on these):
My vision for jump:
~Have it so that players can jump whenever they want/need, but make it realistic and in-tune with the current high quality animation style. This means a fairly instant jump upon button activation, but ending with a nice smooth landing animation which needs to finish its cycle before being able to spam it again. This would avoid what FFXI players fear the most in terms of incessant bunny hopping.
~Have jump actually coincide with the design of 2.0 so that there could be reasons to jump (i.e. in dungeons over pitfalls that could drop us a level below). Falling from heights too high would hurt our HP (like in Zelda), but cliffsides should still have invisible walls (no need to fall off cliffs since this would only be an instant death hassle).
~If jumping was to be implemented into battles (this one's for you Jynx), they shouldn't be regular jumps but instead dodging rolls in all directions.
~If/when swimming is added, let us climb (yes, climb) up ladders/vines to high ledges and swan dive into the water. This would be awesome as an entrance to an instanced dungeon.
~Allow us to jump while on chocoback, but let us glide down to the ground with certain (black) chocobos.
Reasonable...but wait:
Which goes right back to what I said:
You could have easily made your opinion without yet again attacking the fact someone plays a specific MMORPG. Those 'FFXI players' can't have a "fear of incessant bunny hopping" if their argument is surrounding the fact they play FFXI, a game without jump.
<Removed due to Forum Rule Violation>
I do not mind having a different view but AT LEAST have it make sense. "I don't wonna see other people jump" DOES NOT make sense IMO... im sorry
Also lots of other FF titles had jump and guess what? it was still an awesome game.
Actually, those good ideas you read were probably some of mine. My 1/4 page rant was me attempting to bring the debate back into focus. The fact that we want jump is simple. Yoshi thinks so too. Even he can recognize the reasons for not having it is the only garbage going around these forums.
As I clearly stated -- I keep up with Japanese and western media regarding FFXIV, not one person specifically wrote:
"I refuse to play FFXIV because of FFXI players."
You know what they did write?
"XIV's UI is sluggish and unresponsive at times"
"XIV has a lack of content"
"XIV doesn't have basic systems"
"XIV is heading in the right direction but still a long way to go"
How is that the fault of FFXI players?
You love playing the FFXI victim. Nobody is attacking FFXI. I used to be one. We're just stating the obvious; including Yoshi, so tell it to him while you're at it!
"Yoshida: A lot of the Japanese players of XIV that only know about that game as well as FFXI, so they’re used to having a character that can’t jump. They don’t realize that you can jump in every other MMO in the world, so they have that aversion to it.
It’s not only Japan though. If you look at our forums, there are a lot of people, even in North America, who don’t want the jumping feature." -RPGSite Interview
