They try making interesting new content, but it doesn't always catch on. The Wolves' Den, Frontlines, The Gold Saucer, Beast Tribe quests, Exploratory Missions, Side Story quests, you name it. Some of them caught on, some of them got added onto in later patches, some of them became a part of the standard patch formula, and some were thrown aside and forgotten about.
While the majority of each patch follow a set formula (most of which can still be considered "new content" for a lot of people), there is always something new as well. Whatever new things they add are not always well received by the playerbase though, and they have no way of knowing in advance how it will be received, since they haven't tried it before.
They make half-done content people enjoy and fail to follow-through with it.
- There are no regular updates for any existing saucer games.
- This is not a PvP game. It just feels tacked-on in order to appease a small player-group. Which would be fine if they updated it regularly and balanced jobs properly.
- Sidestory quests are fun, but they're oneshots and usually take less than an hour to complete. Again, they've started multiple sidequest storylines and have failed to continue any of them in a timely manner.
SE's problem isn't a lack of worthwhile content. they have plenty of things players want. They just post the skeletal framework and forget it exists until the players do, too.
I wish they'd talk about the dye able Allagan gear...please don't be class locked..more glamour options...
- They have added more cards and npcs for triple triad every patch so far, and they are most likely gonna add more minigames to the Gold Saucer in the future.
- Funny how you dismiss the pvp because of the relatively small part of the playerbase that participates in it, considering the fact that the amount of players that are unhappy with the current patch formula is most likely smaller than the actually pvp fanbase.
And they are doing balancing for pvp. There is a reason why certain abilities work differently in pvp and that we have additional abilities for it as well. You might not agree with the way they are balancing it, but they are attempting to keep it somewhat balanced.
- As of right now, the only side story quest I feel has been neglected for too long is the Postmoogle quests. I am also slightly worried that they might forget about the Doman Adventurers' Guild guests, but I have not given up hope yet.
As for the length of the side story quests, I would obviously always like them to be longer, but they are a good distraction from the more grindy aspects of the game nevertheless.
I echo what other people have said before me, and this goes for everyone: There is not a lack of new content being added to the game, there is merely a lack of new content that suits your tastes. You are not required to like everything Square Enix adds, and they are not required to add exactly what you want them to.
They have not added new cards and NPCs in every single patch. They added some with Heavensward, and tweaked a few NPCs. Still, they haven't added any new worthwhile content for the game.
- No new rules.
- no new tournaments in different areas, etc.
Also, what about Chocobo racing? There hasn't been a single update for that since it was released.
- Why are there no server leader boards, or new racing areas based-on the expansion zones?
- When are they going to fix the completely random way stats are distributed while breeding? Basing the stats off the grandparents, rather than the parents was an awful idea.
- Why can we still not trade cards/mating rights with friends?
- Why can't we queue for Chocobo racing outside that single room yet?
- When are the going to fix the random lag which causes item chests to not appear for players?
I did not completely dismiss PvP. warrior has reigned supreme in pvP for months, now. They're unstoppable. SE knows this, but rather than fixing it during one of their maintenance queues, they left them drastically overpowered. Will they be nerfed? Most assuredly. Does it look like SE's simply ignoring the problem? Yes.
There's also the riddle questline, which people loved.
No one said there's a lack of new content. People are complaining it's the same old, tired tredmill. if SE wasn't so keen on cometely invalidating people's work every few months they'd have time to expand the world and work on things players actually want to do.
Let me reiterate this because you don't seem to be grasping what I've said from the start of this conversation: It's not that SE fails to create content. They're failing to nurture the content they do have while tossing more unfinished ideas at us every few patches. People aren't upset because we're getting 0 content every patch. We're upset because SE isn't taking the time to fully realize the things we do have, and enjoy. My favorite parts of the game involve side quests and the gold saucer. Some people enjoy PvP; and that's okay, too. We all just want SE to really work on the aspects of the game we do enjoy instead of pushing it aside right after it's implemented.
There's nothing wrong with complaining. There's nothing wrong with saying, "I'm not happy with the way things are." Just like there's nothing wrong with being happy with the way things are. the people here don't have to articulate every tiny reason they're not happy and give detailed solutions to all of their grievances for said grievances to be real.
Just take the echo for instance. It was a huge plot device up until 2.2, where it became a generic, 'Primals can't enthrall you,' device. Why did we stop enterring people's pasts? Why did Moenbryda need to die when we could create spears of light to banish/destory Ascians without that device? We possessed the echo even without the crystals' powers. Even if that was the case and we did need the crystals, we never use it in the expansion, even though we've already collected a ton of them again. that's jsut one of many examples of SE having an interesting aspect to the game and completely dropping it for no apparent reason.
YOU are upset because they are not putting their focus on the content YOU would like them to focus on. "Random person A" is upset because they are not focusing on the content "Random person A" wants them to focus on. You do not speak for everyone. Nor does anyone else. Everyone has their own preferences for what SE should focus on.
If they were to put more focus on the content you want them to focus on, that would mean less focus on content that other people want them to focus on. No matter what they do, there will always be people that want them to do things differently. If it isn't you that is unhappy, it will be someone else.
A lot of ideas get tested. Some turn into staples for future updates, while others get pushed aside until they get an idea on how to improve in them. There is nothing wrong with stating your unhappiness with the way things are, but it accomplishes nothing. It just causes them to continue trying to add new things until they find something that has a relatively good reception. That is why we haven't gotten a continuation of the riddle questline: Aside from one or two threads of people exchanging information on how to solve the riddles, most other threads about it were people complaining that it was pointless, too hard or the reward wasn't good enough. The point of the riddle quests was to have quests for people that liked solving riddles for the sake of solving riddles, but they found out that portion of the playerbase that actually enjoyed that sort of content just wasn't big enough to continue it in it's current format. That is why we got the broom quests instead.
And do not make the mistake of thinking that the majority of the playerbase is unhappy based on the amount of people expressing their dislike on forums! The vast majority of the playerbase do not post on the forums, or anywhere else for that matter, as they are happy with the way things are.
P.S. There have been two major content patches since the Gold Saucer was added. Both of them added 20 new triple triad cards each.
If we're talking about things we'd like to see added I'd be happy to offer some Quality of Life improvements.
* A Glamour Storage Tab/Collections, where every item you acquire can have it's appearance stored, and used later when applying glamours to items. Heavensward added a lot of interesting gear, and I'm running out of space with my Retainers!
* Remove Cleric Stance and allow Mind to affect the Damage of Healer Damage skills.
* Adding Leviathan-Egi, Ramuh-Egi, and Shiva-Egi to Summoners.
* Allow Scholar-Hunters to add a flag to your map for Monsters you hunt as part of the Weekly Elite Hunt Board.
* Add new Housing Wards. Seriously, I understand you like the idea of a finite amount of housing, but the game's player population has jumped significantly. At the least base the number of Wards around the population of a server.
* Add Red Mage already. Complete the Holy Trinity! Make it a Mage Tank if you want, completing the Holy Gaming Trinity too. A smattering of DPS and Self-Healing for enmity with some parrying and the various en-spells would make it a great tanking class, if done right.
* Open up Ishgard for people whom have not completed the 2.5.5 MSQ. It's in the Eorzean Alliance again, yes it's a little odd with chronology, but it puts off new players eager to try the new jobs.
* Add base classes to the new Jobs and sort them into the Disciple of War and Disciple of Magic Categories. This is just my OCD flinching everytime I see them removed from the other classes/jobs. Mercenary -> Dark Knight, Engineer -> Mechanist, Seer -> Astrologian. Something like that.
* Make certain spells/skills automatically adjust for level. So if you're a level 60 BLM going into a Level 16 Dungeon, your Blizzard III becomes Blizzard. That, or just let people cast higher level spells in lower level dungeons.
I'm confused about this.
Literally all that's happened is add color options to gear that's still race and sex exclusive. That's it. I cannot suddenly wear the Miqo'te skirt as a Lalafell, be it red or some other color. So none of the exclusivity of these pieces is lost, they are still race and sex unique.
SE has good ideas , but the results are sometimes not what players expect:
Gold saucer , chocobo racing , Diadem , PvP , FC workshops , even Hunts (but i think we can blame 50% devs 50% players on that) , oh and dont forget Crafting and gathering , Anima quest , and Alex Savage .....im sure there are more but u get the idea.
the point is that all that is barely touched or if played ppl despise it while doing it , and just do it because it has a reward that they want not because is "fun" , interesting or engaging....
However i think SE will iron out the issues , they are working on it , we got some really good QoL changes in 3.2 , just being able to see cooldown timers on skills :o , 3.2 is step in the right direction .
This.
A lot of the ideas really never seem to get off the ground. I really have to chalk it up to resourses. I can't real ly see them thinking thats how diadem should have been for example. It's like they started making it and then had budget cuts and had to settle with instanced hunts.
But Yoshi does seem to put his head in the sand and see what he likes though. His comments like "I would hope the players play fair or how it's intended" regarding things like triple triad tournaments and other stuff make me want to throw a bucket of cold water in his face and tell him to wake up.
Actually since this is story related I thought I'd just point out that the echo hasn't been dropped and infact HW has added new lore to the echo and how it works including confirming that the Ascians also have the Echo and revealing that each person's echo is different (we don't have the same abilities from our Echo as Krile).
Further the issue with Moenbryda was actually explained in the quests at the time. The reason the WoL cant just pop out a Blade of Light at any time is that the first time we did it we have Hydaelyn feeding us the Aether to create the Blade of Light. Since we cant just call on that much power from Hydaelyn at will (particularly since it seems to cost her strength) we had to develop a method of gathering sufficient Aether from the surrounding area to create the Blade. With Moenbryda she used the Aether created from the moment of her death to fuel the device, effectively using her life force to create the Blade. The second time we do it we use the Eye.
In all cases the actual process wasn't directly linked to the echo. I suspect they are purposely leaving the development of the WoL's echo and its particular strengths on the shelf for the moment. After all they need to have new things to develop later in the story.
Just to address some of these:
- They have already explained the issue they have with a glamour storage tab/system. Its something they are going to have resolve at some point but they have outright said they aren't working on something like this at the moment. If that changes I suspect we will still not see anything for quite a long time. It took over 2 years for World of Warcraft to implement its Wardrobe system from when they first mentioned they were working on it.
- I think they aren't doing this for balance purposes. Cleric stance demands a trade off. As it is if they just removed Cleric stance and made mind effect damage healer classes would still suffer a 10% damage loss unless they baked that in.
- I expect other primal egis eventually but as glamours. They did say they were working on a system.
- New Housing Wards are coming in 3.3. Ishgardian housing and a new apartment housing system coming in 3.4 with the ability to grow plants in apartments/private quarters.
- Any new Jobs will almost certainly not be added till the next expansion. They take a lot of development work.
- I don't see them going back and retroactively adding classes to the new Jobs for the same reason as you are unlikely to see classes removed from old Jobs. Its a hell of a lot of work for little payoff.
They really should force us to have the undyeable versions, though. They should draw a line and say "You don't get to have everything you want 100% customizable." The more they cater to us, the more entitled we feel and the more we bitch at them when we don't deserve to.
Thanks for the answers! A fair bit of that I wasn't aware of (such as already having a stance on a glamour tab/collection). Something like the 10% DPS increase could just be baked into MND or even through a talent, like Mend and Magick. An Ishgardian District and improvements to house are good to hear, but I feel like it won't really address the problem, since housing is still per character rather than per account. Though I freely admit that I know nothing about the stress it would put on the servers to add more Wards.
They added Ninja during ARR, so it's not impossible they'd add a job during the expansion. Just extremely unlikely. And yeah, I get that they wouldn't add base classes to the three new jobs. Not much point.
Conversely, it took Guild Wars 2 less than 2 years from its launch (August 2012) to release a wardrobe system (April 2014). I can't seem to find anything earlier than March 2014 for any sort of announcement.
I still cannot fathom how having the ability to make things more individualized per person results in less uniqueness? i.e. Say 100 people have the Miqo'te skirt. Currently, they are all red. In the patch, maybe 40 will be red, 10 will be yellow, 15 will be green, 25 will be blue, 5 will be pink and 5 will be white. Those 5 people with white miqo'te skirts are certainly more unique than they were previously being the 1 of 100 people in red skirts. No?
Like the only way I see what you're saying make sense for it being more unique now, is that it's unique in the sense that you cannot dye it. That's not a very good way to be unique.
Yoshi's said they don't have any plans to add a new job during Heavensward (and that's the sort of thing that won't change on the fly since classes take a lot of development time). Ninja was a special case, I think, since the game was largely lacking a "rogue" archetype.
I... don't understand this at all. Players like options. It's always been that way. I'd love to have the option to dye some armor from dungeons. Take the Valerian Wizard's stuff from level 60 dungeons. I'd love to dye that black and wear it on my Black Mage. I think it'd look really great. Instead I'm stuck with a shade of green that feels more appropriate to a Conjurer than a Black Mage. Works well for Summoner though.
This right here is one reason why unique clothing shouldn't be dyeable. You think it looks less appropriate to your Black Mage just because it isn't black. Therefor you don't think it's valid for your Black Mage even though it's literally a "wizard's robe." If you dye it black, it makes it just another generic robe and it loses the feel of it being an otherworldly Valerian outfit.
I can't quite see how. Better for gear to be dye-able rather than to add some max level crafted version which can be dyed, but is still just a copy/paste of the item. Take the Acolyte/Foestriker/Battlemage gear from the low levels. There are level 50 versions of those items which are crafted, and can be dyed, but I'd rather have had new items than a copy/paste and now dye-able version of low level gear. To me, adding a version of the item for the sake of making it dye-able is the antithesis of unique. A unique item shouldn't have duplicates, it should fulfill all functions items are capable of fulfilling, such as being dyed, or casting glamours.
How in the name of the twelve do you come by that logic? If a piece is un-dye-able, then everyone who has it looks the same, not very unique. But if we can dye the piece, there will be far, far fewer of the same item that look the same, which, believe it or not, makes eachpiece that much rarer based not only on the piece itself, but the color chosen by the wearer. I'm really not sure how you can say that making it possible to alter the base color of an item decreases the uniqueness of it.
