People really forgot best bro Regulus van Hydrus and I think the one who was tempered (I forgot his name) the one in the EW quest where we go to Garlemald in the single Duty was also implied to be rather down to earth.

On Gaius himself. Werlyt was kind weird written but too short to really fall apart. It is a nice short story and I think that's actually the strengh of the writer. Stories about established characters that are over before they can drag on.
Gaius was fine himself it was the forced sacrifices of the children I had a problem with. Didn't make any sense.

They did shadow of Werlyt? This was nice, compared to every other thing they did (Pandemonium was a snooze fest, not uninteresting, but not good either).

I think Pandemonium started okay, but then seemed to just kind of fizzle out. It's like a writer who has a good idea for a story, but then doesn't know how to end it appropriately.

Personally, I liked the Werlyt raids more than the actual storyline. I remember it being very much the same "tell not show" as the MSQ was. I did have my doubts going into Dawntrail but I'd hoped that Ishikawa's supervision would help quq

To be honest, I really enjoy deep, involved stories like Lord of the Rings, Dune, stuff like that. But I also enjoy more simplistic hero's journey stories like Star Wars (not the woke stuff, the Original Trilogy). What really drew me in to FFXIV's story wasn't ARR. It was fine. It was a simple, dopey hero's story. Adventurer learns to be hero type of thing. The defining moment that really, really drew me in to FFXIV's story was during Heavensward at the end where you face off against Nidhogg. Like holy shit dude I felt literal chills when the Heavensward theme started playing with the panning to Nidhogg with the soldiers running for cover as you walk forward. Like god damn. THAT was the moment where I was like, "Okay I really need to start really paying attention to what's going on here." HW's themes were more complicated: two warring factions that forgot why they were fighting in the first place. People trying to stop the fighting to no avail, people caught in the crossfire. Haucherfaunt's death hit hard because it was deserved. He spent a lot of time with the character. You got to know him as a person. You got to know his family, who helped you out. Aymeric was a good guy that got seriously burned by his father. It had more simple and personal stories wrapped up in an epic longer story. It just worked so well. You also got a little teasing of the Empire with the actual Emperor.

Stormblood's themes of a people conquered and rebelling against oppression really resonated with me as an American, and our history of rebellion against Great Britain. It was a theme that I could really get on board with and support. Ala Mhigo wasn't filled with darlings. Some of the people that we were trying to liberate weren't great. But, it also had a few people connected to it: Raubahn, Lyse, Hien, Yugiri, etc... it worked as well. I know some people don't like "political stories, but it worked for me as a Poli Sci major and history major. I really enjoyed it.

It also furthered the story with the empire, and introduced Emet.

ShB's story literally brought me to tears at the end. I shed actual tears and sobbed at the end. It was that good. I legitimately stayed up for like over 24 hours to finish it it was so good. Something spoke to me in such a fundamental, deep, human level. I felt actual sorrow for the ancients, who did nothing wrong, but lost everything. They wanted to save their people, and for that, we needed to die for it. It was so understandable, and even the characters understood Emet, but couldn't condone it. It was either you win or you die. Both sides had a right to live, but only one of them could persist. It felt so unfair. So raw. So real. We "won" but there was no sense of happiness. It was a hollow, empty victory with a bitter wisdom of what really went on. I legitimately had to sit quietly crying and process what just happened.

ShB's story spoke to something so primordial and fundamental to the human spirit: the desire to live, to be remembered, and to be around those that love us. To do what ever it takes to protect what and who we love. For ANYONE who is an adult and has lost someone, it absolutely spoke to the soul. I lost my step father, a man that I consider to be my father, and something about SHB's story of loss just ripped my heart out. It felt so raw and real. People you love are going to die, and sometimes, you can't do anything about it. The past is just lost. It never will be again.


EW was the conclusion of ShB's arc and the entire Ascian story line. It was so well threaded together from that simple quest back in Thanalan where you meet the "spooky dark ascians" but you know them now, they are human, they have goals, they have families. They aren't just mustache twirling evil bad guys. They are your ancestors. I got real messed up when we got to Elpis for the first time. I so desperately wanted to see even a glimpse of the ancient world. When we see Hythlodaeus for the first time, the actual Hythlodaeus and Emet, fuck man, I literally just lost it. And when your character is sitting at the table, the shade of Azem and you are talking with both former and actual members of the convocation with Venat and company over tea, like and Answers is playing...dude I was a MESS.

MY POINT BEING: the writing was solid. It had reasons for me to care about the story. Dawn Trail has none of that. I don't care about it. It has nothing to lure me in like ARR did. The Garleans and Gaius were typical bad guys, but they had enough going on to where you wanted to learn more about them. The Ascians were sneaky and dark and you wanted to know more about them. Dawn Trail has nothing really going for it. No hook. No purpose. It doesn't lure you into the story like ARR-EW's story arc did.

That's what DT is missing that ARR had: a plan, a purpose, a goal for the story. It's just kind of THERE with no purpose or plan. I think that they really need a design document or something so that they have a clear focus on what they want to achieve, narratively, so that they don't lose track of it and can ask "does this get us closer to x?"

What's even funnier, back then they were constantly calling her a shill for being "overly positive". Instead of listening to the valid criticisms she has (that btw echo most of the fanbase's negative sentiments towards Dawntrail MSQ), they just want to dismiss her outright because idk, they don't like her I guess? It's what happens when loyal fans of the game make it their identity. Being part of the herd and showering praise is more important than preventing the game from deteriorating by speaking out. All edges are smoothed out by not addressing them. Many such cases like this across many fandoms, and social media didn't help.

It's the age old meme of 'leave the multi billion dollar company alone...' in action. They developed this and sold it, we have every right to give honest feedback without the fear of being dogpiled.

Preach is actually over the story based on his last story recap. And he's trying. He's really digging into what is on offer and looking for some depth and nuance, and it's just not there.

On a brighter note, I've had some serious fits of laughter discussing the plot with my FC. Some of it is just that badly written.

She has. Until Asmongold showed up and she started to copy him, downright to how she talks and moves now. If she had changed her mind in EW by herself that be fine but she is just copying someone else, realizing how drama boosts the channel. So personally I cannot take her opinion seriously. As far as I understand it, people don't like Zepla because she had the guts to criticize the game that can't be criticized (or else...! ò_ó). They also dislike her because she played "thE bAD WizOrd gAMe"™. (which I'm not 100% if she even did but she said the boycott was dumb and that's enough to demonize her I guess)

I wouldn't really take people that hate her because of those bland reasons serious tbh. I myself am rather glad content creators are vocal about their dislike of the story. I don't really follow any FFXIV creators per se, but it makes me feel seen that they have issues with the story that mirror my own. And hopeful that their voices might reach the devs if ours won't.

I have always felt that Zepla's turning point was not because of this expansion or that expansion, it was when she lived through months of stress and existential uncertainty and eventually had to flee and leave her home of eight years in Kyiv, Ukraine, behind because of the war front moving across the country. She went through literally becoming a refugee trying to sort out her life and start over from a tiny room in a different country -- that does things to people. Afterwards she had to reinvent herself, re-establish herself, but you don't easily just resume your previous persona after a fairly traumatic experience like that, and she ended up borrowing parts of the style of other then big gamer streamers like Asmongold to fill the gaps and cracks.

I still don't think she is unfair to the game, just more bitter about.. well, life, the universe and gaming while still using the trappings and language of her previously more cheerful streamer persona.

I've been watching CiderSpider's playthrough on and off (the guy with the funny, deep-voiced Lalafell videos) since he started (he's quite enjoyable) and seeing his disbelief and annoyance with story grow with each session is like having a look into my own experience.
It's funny because he started with a positive outlook- a few oddities here and there, but rationalizing them somehow and thinking it would all come together.
But the last few sessions, he's just overwhelmed by the terrible pacing, nonsense characterization and general senseless plot.
Seeing someone who started out so positive towards the story and then slowly realize it's actually just bad is an experience.
I feel sorry for him, because he's at a point where all incongruousness is just too much to bear and it's impossible to ignore the myriad flaws and he keeps taking short breaks to vent about it.
I'm usually a bit demanding regarding narratives, and I know a lot of XIV lore (which usually hurts the msq experience more, since you can see all the lore retcons and plot holes), but seeing a more casual msq enjoyer having a similar experience to mine really shows how unforgivable this whole plot and characters are.

And you'd be correct. She wasn't for the longest time. But that changed a few years back at this point. I don't care about her takes on the game because quite frankly, I haven't watched her content since she decided to throw trans people under the bus and then proceeded to run the "I've been CANCELLED" grift for a week straight on her channel. That is, at least, what made me lose all respect for her.

In terms of FFXIV, I think she has been dissatisfied with the game prior to any major world events occurring starting in 6.0 before the turn of the new year. With that said, I think she was better at masking this dissatisfaction prior to having to flee from war, which undoubtedly resulting in compounding her stress even further.

With DT, there have been times I have caught her saying "How did we get here from Heavensward?" as that was when she first joined the game and she considers it her favorite expansion to date. Her reminiscing in this way makes me think she is wondering to herself why the game's writing has fallen apart over the past year or so and this is abundantly clear with DT. Perhaps she is coming to terms with the fact the game she loved for the greater part of 8~ years and basically used it for her career is now in the state that it is, and it is possible to observe this based on the fact she likes referring to previous expansions and their writing positively.

For many of us who are not satisfied with DT, it can be cathartic to watch as others also do not enjoy the game (unless there is an active personal bias against said streamer). Many have shared this viewpoint and I admittedly do find catharsis in seeing others not being satisfied with the MSQ.

With all of this said, this is just what I am thinking largely. I cannot speak for Zepla and her own personal thoughts.

Most people who played the game just wanted to have fun with a game. It's not that deep. Much like I just want a cup of coffee when I use a Nescafe capsule at my office. People have hard, stressful lives and maybe that's not the fight they chose. Much like, I assume, most of us didn't really think about the environment when we got a smartphone or a computer. I don't think we're evil for it- we're human and trying our best (in most cases, at least...).


Back on topic, I actually tuned in to Zepla just now (I've never watched her stream) and she raised a very interesting point about how artificial and "forced" the dialogue feels from the minor npcs during the attack. I was probably already on "skip all filler dialogue" mode, but it's actually a very valid criticism- it's like two words from the WoL (who's more or less a stranger in Tural) calms people down instantly and they forget their grief and panic for a moment to go hear the Dawnservant's- Wuk Lamat's- speech. One npc, in particular, has a line about "destroying our communities and culture and lives" followed by "The Dawnservant has a plan already? Even though she lost so much. The least I could do is listen to the Dawnservant." after their father was murdered. I actually never thought of this, but I agree with what she's saying for now, at least.

Not only that but he also might find himself uninvited from future FFXIV media tours if his criticism of the game comes off as too harsh. It's a smart move on his part. He wants to provide his feedback about DT but doesn't want to burn any bridges with Yoshi P and co.

This is an entirely fair take. And no, I wouldn't. Because it doesn't directly affect me. Is that hypocritical? A bit. And yeah, as you say, that's not the fight they choose. It's a fight I choose, because it directly affects me. And I'd at least want people to know what they're financially contributing towards before doing so. I'm not in a place to stop them - nor will I call people transphobic for playing the game. Realistically, they're not, but realistically I can't see them as "allies" either. Most people have too much going on in their lives to care about whether trans people get persecuted and just want to have fun playing a video game. And I get that. Still. I want it to be known where that money goes to.

Do I order from Amazon personally? Not much, because ordering from Amazon is honestly fairly inconvenient where I live. That being said, I'm very much guilty of buying Nestlé (Nescafe parent company) products.

I personally interpreted this as more of a "This really fucking sucks, and nothing's gonna change the fact that it really fucking sucks, I guess it can't get worse if I listen so might as well" kind of thing.

I am with zepla. Atleast she FINALLY gets it. The story was just bad it is ok to tell the devs something is not good. If you keep lying saying everything was great that is how you get endwalker. To where the devs were falling asleep it was so bad but everyone kept saying must consume more content they can do no wrong. I cant believe the comments omg she just hates on the game for clicks. No she is telling the truth of what she thinks . Even the one who never says bad things about the game mr happy was not liking everything. The story is just not that great but if you like it that is ok too.

Yeah, that's a worrisome future. I can imagine not wanting to cater to someone who bites the hand that feeds, but his final thoughts don't seem too harsh, despite hamming up some jokes. He doesn't find Dawntrail to be a bad expansion, but it's not what he expected and just finds it.. for lack of a better word, 'mid'.

He does get visibly upset with people in his chat trying to convince him Wuk Lamat was well written. However, I feel it's a valid take on why Dawntrail is being received as negatively as it is.
