It comes from people who don't understand "lag", and xenophobes.

I can't tell if you're for or against me.
Either way: http://ffxiv.zam.com/forum.html?foru...92063227414682
Right now it would be awful. Maybe if the game ever gets to the point of having a substantial user base in each region it would be worth it. I can tell you why I would eventually want regional servers if the game became populated enough to warrant it.
In WoW, I play on a BG with a Spanish speaking server. Running into players from that server in a LFG heroic or raid can be pretty damn frustrating -- especially when you're trying to explain the encounter to them, or how to avoid wiping the entire group on the pull. It's nothing personal, of course. It would just be a whole lot easier if everybody could speak the same language. I see the same problem happening when 2.0 finally comes out and the content finder is implemented.
Good points have been made again and again, and I call them GOOD because they would positively affect game experience.
All that people against regional servers ever bring to the table is how fun it is to interact with other cultures, which is valid, but this is a game and gameplay > all.
- Interacting with other cultures
- A steady population to play with at all times (rather than NA only servers in other MMO's even your vaunted WoW with it's millions of subscribers which die during off, non-peak hours)
- The economic, and game play benefits of having multiple regions and time zones represented. (not everyone competing for everything at the same time, in general a greater variety of suppliers due to a 24 hour global community as opposed to a regional one)
- Being able to play with people around the world, nothing to do with "culture" simply the fact that some of us have people we like to play with who don't happen to live in the same country as we do. Why is that so hard for you to understand, this is the global internet if you want media constricted to your geographic location how about you go find a LAN party.
All people supporting Regional servers have to say are (omitting the blatant racism which always pops up in these discussions):
"I can't understand their funny language". Even though the game features an in-game translation tool, and easily facilitates the use of third party sources to help communicate with people in other languages.
The fact that the majority of players are able to make an effort to communicate across language barriers in all sorts of situations and have for years in FFXI/XIV wome eludes these people.
and "I have all this lag because the servers are located on the other side of the world!" from people who don't understand how the internet works.
I disagree. Fun > all. Gameplay just helps a bit. FFXI never had regional servers and it always worked perfectly...ven with the latency. Also, IMO regional servers very often create discriminatory behavior from those not from that region but that happen to have some "odd" playing time for his own region.
FFXI was one of the first MMOs that offer only global servers and IMO SE should keep this up.
1 - /shrug, this is a game, gameplay > all.
2 - Most JP people don't even bother with autotranslate when putting groups together, whatever their reasons are the outcome is the same.
3 - Goes both ways, you get more supply AND more demand so not a real advantage.
4 - What? You repeated 1.
BTW I don't want anything restricted (constricted?) to geo location, only a server that is half the latency away. Also I wouldn't want SE to lock ppl out by regions, that is if you want to play in a JP server then nothing should stop you and the other way around.
Edit:
So what's the advantage if people could still play on servers from other regions?
1 - Less latency.
2 - Making servers officially NA would mean most of its players understand each other, or at least don't have some form of cultural weirdness that excuses them from using the autotranslator.
1. Latency is not the issue.
2. "cultural weirdness"? Right... I'm not even going to explore this because this is where the racist overtones from the pro-regional crowd generally begin, as I said most people manage just fine on global servers with no impediment to their "gameplay".
I will not play on a Japanese server if they go to regional servers, I will just not play.
I don't play FFXIV because I can play with Japanese players. I prefer global servers because I don't always play during US primetimes, so I don't want NA only servers. Some of the most memorable MMO moments for me have come while I was playing with people in Australia, Europe, Japan, HK, and other areas who I would not have a chance to play with if we were constricted to only regional servers.
Also again, less competition for content due to a spreading out of the population, and higher server population overall due to a 24 hour globally active server as opposed to one restricted to a single region > your being uncomfortable around people who speak another language, or come from a different region.
agree with this, i might be english but i don't always play on english hours, nor do i want to roll with just the english. mmo's based just in the states tend to suck arse. and then there isn't anyone else to play with or to losen the noose that some have tightened to have a server playing the way they want it. if a jungle is just filled with monkeys then it just smells like monkey dung. rather have all the animals chillin together even if it still smells like crap. :)
but real merges ...yes please we need to be merged ..at least the smaller servers they are rediculous. push at least a 1k or more pop on servers at the least ...i'm sure these broken servers can't handle to much either way lol.
Latency is not an issue but -100ms would be very welcome.
LOL! Racist overtones? Hint: It's not the english speaking crowd who is afraid of using the autotranslator. Lots of excuses have been made as to why the JP don't bother with it, they are shy, their culture is different, whatever, at the end results are the same.
My server is around 1/3 NA, FR, DE and 2/3 JP. Keep hating me because I rather be in one where the majority understands me or at least cares to try.
People can say however much they want about how the servers are configured 'poorly' and cause 'most' of the delays themselves (which I have not seen complete proof of from SE employees, feel free to link some), but you cannot argue against distance latency. It's better now because the action based combat system was removed (which I didn't like, as I've explained on my forum/blog); but you're still talking about distance latency! The same problem FFXI had; the same reason your casts were interrupted, your interrupts were late, you stood in the fire, you took an arrow in the knee; your reactive fighting ability was limited. It's all the same in FFXIV, and it's all based on distance latency. (Remember NM camping when JP players would provoke things before they even appeared on your client as entities? Yeah, that's from distance latency!)
People can test this type of latency themselves by playing a foreign version of a game that's also available in their region and then switching to their region's version. The difference is night and day. In fact, the difference is like going from dial-up to 10/1Mbit broadband. (Speaking of which, I'm on 60/8Mbit. I like it being useless for gaming because of distance latency!)
I rarely play during US primetimes on MMOs I frequent. Why? Mainly because I want to get away from most of the kids, but also because less people on the server = less server latency.
I have memorable moments in FFXI with JP groups. I also wouldn't have met one of my good friends if Australia was blocked from one of the games I played in the past. So yeah, I agree it sucks, but again; that still doesn't change the want for regional servers.
For me, latency = gameplay ability, gameplay = fun. End result? Latency > community.
"forced" is not the right word imo, 1 server merger with another = good. The idea you suggest is nothing different from server transfer and that doesn't work well on a low population game and can prevent ppl to play together with their friend/ls in some case of restrict
...So guys, about that server merger?
lolololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololol
I think it would be a good idea to merge servers if we are all going to be taken to new servers at 2.0 anyway.
But there are some things that might be a bit tricky to manage...
The other day I wanted to summon my retainer at the armorfitters row in Uldah (Besaid server) and it said that it was impossible to summon my retainer there as it was full.
I can only imagine how full the market wards would be if people from other servers merged to Besaid...
Another thought that this brought to me was how do we know which server we will go when 2.0 comes out?
I don't want to be on a server which is full of lvl 50s with all the gear that is possible to get. I want to be able to interact with the new people and sell them the stuff I craft etc. But at the same time I don't want to be on a differen't server from the friends I made...
Solution, before 2.0 SE gives us a month to decide which server we want to go to (this gives us time to discuss this with out friends) and the ones who don't choose gets distributed to random servers. At this same time we could re-do our characters (like mentioned before due to new races coming to 14) and be born again with maybe a new shorter (one part) name etc.
BUT for now... server merge YES PLS, but pls do it right and not just merge em... market wards and exp camps would get PACKED!!!
Wow you should not be playing MMO's. (I won't even address how wrong you are about everything in FFXI, I'm sorry you never got claims and were terrible at the game, that was your problem not "distance latency".)
I hear single player games have awesome "latency". Enjoy.
Please merge servers! One thing SE is going to face is a decrease in population in the game. If the population drops then the people who want to stay on and play the game will have no one to play with. Merging the servers gives the die hards (::cough:: paying customers ::cough::) people to actually play with. If Palamecia turns into a ghost world I'll just be sitting there are my crafting table having conversations with NPCs like the old men at the park who talk to the pigeons. I don't want to be that guy!
Read interviews. They state it all the time.
Also no, if I was able to play Rift from Japan with almost no latency problems distance is not a contributing factor compared to how well optimized your servers are. It's understandable if you're a european because europe has problems connecting to even American services, let alone asian services.
However FFXI versus FFXIV is light and day in terms of latency and they're both ran by the same company with development teams and servers in the same locations.
This means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things -- It's all in the optimization and bandwidth on both ends, if you're also on Cable or Satellite, you're not ever getting full speed regardless.Quote:

I could've sworn we had two giant threads (where I participated in) where we were able to basically confirm it wasn't the so-called distance latency - or ping - that's causing the issues we're having, but rather the poorly built client and the game not updating the server often enough about changes in our position. Whereas the UI latency was something even Square admitted was built into the game (too lazy to dig up the link on this) to supposedly slow down RMTs by forcing the game to check with the server for every single interaction with the UI. Also the game seems to drop packets quite often, which results in that previous poster trying to do a skill and it not kicking in - this actually makes me mash skills quite a bit to make absolutely sure it went through (I often hit the number row keys 2 or 3 times in succession before proceeding to the next skill).
I played the Japanese version of Phantasy Star Universe, and I sort of "get" what the previous poster is talking about. But the big difference here is in PSU JP:
1) The UI didn't have these unnecessary server side checks and was therefore quick and responsive. The UI only lagged a bit when I went to do things that ACTUALLY affected my character - i.e. equipping an item.
2) The latency was consistent. None of this "I dodged this attack on my screen, but it didn't work, yet the next time I dodge the same attack using the same tactics, it worked". Because the latency was consistent, you knew exactly how to change your tactics to compensate for that latency. The game client always updated the server on where your position was so your position on the map on your client always matched up with the server (if not 200-300 milliseconds behind).
3) Packets (and therefore actions) weren't dropped. I hit a button to do an attack, it always went through. None of this "I thought I hit the button, but it didn't go through" annoyance that's happening in XIV combat.
And if I recall correctly, even Japanese players are noticing the UI latency and the combat latency (most prevalent in the Ifrit fight). Japanese players' pingtimes to their natively hosted servers are in the 10's and 20 ms' - this has NOTHING to do with our physical distance from their servers.
Errr... jumping the ocean consistently adds around 100ms to latency.
Though I completely agree that the worst of our latency issues are being caused by the game server (as in the program running in the box, not the network hardware itself), I would rather play without those extra ~100ms.
What am I wrong about in FFXI? You had to do all your actions earlier than you would've in order to get them off successfully if you were playing from another continent in respect to where the servers were located. The same stands for every internet based game that exists. You cannot beat mathematics/physics no matter what you may think.
As for your last comment, you appear to just be trolling now, so I wont refrain from ignoring your future posts and possibly reporting you depending on how bad they become.
I wouldn't know, the only attention I pay to FFXIV is on the Lodestone. I suppose I'll try to find and read over some articles that talk about it.
This is more of an issue of where one is located relative to server locations, so the subject is pretty subjective and cannot be tested without second hand information.
I reside on the east coast of the US. If I connect to a server located in Asia, I have a good 250ms ping to it with no way around it. Connecting to the west coast of the US I get 80ms. That difference is night and day. It's even more drastic when I connect to one of the very few games that hosts east coast servers and get 10-15ms (and what a joy that is).
Light can only travel so fast; nothing will ever change that. That's the point I'm trying to make.
Again, I wouldn't know how the difference is in present time. I played FFXI back when it was released up until 2005. No doubt technology advanced heavily since then to the point where they could heavily optimize the server infrastructure for FFXI.
Yes, it was just for an example. For someone who goes from dial-up to a decent broadband connection, they're amazed at the clear difference it makes. That's what I was implying.
However, I have to refute your statement about cable internet. If you're on a congested node then yes, you only really get your full speeds at off hours when no one is using the service. But, with DOCSIS 3.0, channel bonding was introduced. Even if you're on a congested node, with channel bonding you'll be able to pull your provisioned speeds practically 24/7, unless the node is so heavily oversold that it just cannot support everyone pulling those speeds at peak hours, which by that time you should be considering changing ISPs.
I use cable internet and I get 60/8Mbps speeds 24/7. I have for the last 10 months. Depending on how my ISP decides to handle their service, those speeds may start to drop in the future if no more bonding channels are added and the node becomes oversold. As much as I would love a fiber optic service (for even less latency), they decided not to run down my street. How unfortunate for me.
Thank you! Exactly what I wanted to hear!
Something I just realized - Yoshida actually used the word "mid" for the month of January, so whoever initially said that the Japanese use "early = 1 - 15 and late = 16 - 31" was incorrect.
That's good to hear though - and as I thought, the merger needs to be timely to keep the population that stays after 1/6. Very smart of Yoshida to realize the merger must happen in order to retain additional subscribers. Kinda wondering how they're going to decide which world will get to select where they go. How many worlds are going to be consolidated? If for example, my server, Saronia, gets to pick - what choices will they have to pick from? Will everyone be able to pick the "big" servers like Besaid and Lindblum or will the smaller worlds only be the ones merging with each other into one world?
finally SE make some sense o.O
Mixed feelings for me.
I like it because it will breath life into the world, more players per server is always a good thing.
At the same time I don't know how this speaks for the game itself.
I enjoy the game, stuff like this worries me a bit though.
Nice. Looking forward to more info on it!
What is the most populous server?
I give less then 24 hrs before the media slams SE.
For the current population this is a real good thing, I question if this will be bad down the road though.
This worries me. It mean many people we met might not be there anymore.
Yeah :( I wish it was just force merged like ffxi...i don't want all the ppl I met to disappear to who knows where >_<
I heard Lindblum has a big population (it was the most populated server during release) and I also heard Besaid has a pretty big population.
As I've argued before, the media slams SE anyway - the game has no good PR to begin with. SE made sure of that by announcing subs a few months ago. There is really nothing to lose and a lot to gain by merging the dead servers, as many people have pointed out earlier in this thread.
Come one! Come All! too Lindblum Server! HOME OF THE DONKEY KNIGHTS!
Slam all the servers into one please.
Current populations on all servers are still under the average number of players on Asura at any given time.
I'm really happy for this news.
I just wish they hadn't left the work of moving to us players since there are probably going to be a lot of people who stick to their server because of habit or sheer lazyness.
I think they have a three words for 10 days of a month that they use. "Days 1-10", "days 11-20" etc.Quote:

The timing of this translation confuses me. Usually the English reps are nowhere to be seen at these times!
Edit: oh, it's Gildrein. Nevermind!
People should converse in their Linkshells to make sure that they and their friends transfer as a group when given the choice (if a transfer becomes applicable to them).
"Final Fantasy XIV officially a zombie"
5 minutes ago, a Community Rep posted on the official Final Fantasy XIV forums that Square Enix plans server merges due to the low population numbers.
I guess all four players still playing will finally be able to play together, while the rest of the world wonders why this thing is still online.

Pathetic. I miss the Square of old. How could they screw over FFXIV so much is beyond me, it's not like it was their first MMO.

Come on Square Enix. Stop dumping money in that piece of **** and give us Versus already since we all know it will save the franchise!
