Wether you like it or not I'll continue to march on for what I feel is enjoyable gameplay, what I've experienced and found to be the best way to play. Personally I find the convient method is while in all ways more convienent I feel we sacrifice too much for it.

This is by far and large an inaccurate statement.

Both the forums and in game communication have shown that among those playing there are still a number of people unhappy with various game systems and features that we have at the moment, the people who left the game are mostly those who decided to speak with their wallets.

There are a number of players who do like some aspects of the game but generally dislike and are unhappy with others. Many of those players however are willing to stay for the features they like while they wait for the features they dislike to be improved or removed altogether in the future. This is where community communication generally helps, but there are plenty who will simply say nothing at all and wait it out.

While i won't sit here and advocate for old-school uphill both ways forms of travel, it's been obvious since launch that:

Small zones + Ease of travel + Open world zergable content = Massive issues dealing with both server stress and player attitudes

This has been apparent since Odin / Behemoth and has shown no signs of improvement with hunts

Also until data can be provided by a reliable source (See SE's numbers and i mean actual reflective numbers not PR inflation) lets stop throwing words around like "Majority" in half of these threads as it's simply a word that cannot be backed up with the data we've been given.

I am in favor of this idea.

I'm going on the numbers playing. According to SE the numbers have been increasing.

The solution to get more people around in the world is not to remove convenience but to give them exciting and interesting reasons to want to and to keep wanting to go around the world on foot. Which they have made a start with utilizing hunts, treasure maps (hope they become better and tougher as time goes on) people, at least on Odin, are still doing Fates in quite a few zones.

Agree on the discussion part, just too many think their opinion is law and anyone who disagrees is "trolling".

for this i agree, removing the aetherites without giving interesting content in the maps is plain useless, i mean now, had it been like that since the beginning i wouldn't say but the problem is that a lot of content like hunt that are flawed right from the beginning (even tho it's not like they had expected it to become like this) are enough to make people who were frustrated about the poor open world we have atm even more frustrated and don't even want to give it a second chance.

I know people who refused marks i had found and was alone on it just because their first experience with it was bad.
Like ryel said, many stay even tho they are unhappy with the game as it is, so on one hand we have a silent majority that is have different opinions, and the other the loud minority who seem to pretty much have the same opinion, not on all subject but on many.

so what should a producer/developer do? satisfy the loud minority or avoid rubbing the wrong way the silent majority ?

From that point on it's a gamble, either you hit jackpot and the silent majority mainly likes it, or it's a total fail and the silent majority no longer stay silent, not for good reasons.
You simply can't ask yoshi-p and the gang who are, for now, playing the safe card to take such a risk.

I thought would have been obvious when I made an example of wolves den, that I don't like it thus do not partake of that content. Really didn't think I would have to explicity state that of course not everyone likes 100% of what is in FFXIV, but they enjoy, I'd hope, enough of the game to make it worth their subscription money. Some don't like tough content, should they remove coil or make it like Crystal tower? No, tough content appeals to some, theres CT for those who want a more relaxed raiding environment. Theres lots of choice with more options incoming for players, doesn't mean that they will or even able to make it that 100% of the playerbase enjoys 100% of the content, thats totally unreasonable from anyones viewpoint.

Should they remove PvP because some don't like it? No. Should they make all content for hardcore raiders? No. Or should they remove coil for the players who don't like it either? No. And should they remove optional teleports because some want others to play how they want them to play? Still a no.

Which is why your statements are reflective of your personal opinion and not the voice of the "majority" and why blanket statements on players staying and leaving are irrelevant to this topic.

It would have been much more honest of you to simply say "I personally am not in favor of changing the teleport system as it currently stands" than to act like a community rep speaking as if you had actual numbers indicating the preferences of a "majority"

Don't get me wrong here, there aren't any hard feelings behind this by any means, but it does topics / suggestions like this no justice to claim one thing when you're personally speaking about another.

I stand firmly that teleportation in itself isn't the problem, but as it is the system does more harm than good.

I'll say it again that the reason instant teleportation exists is because the overworld is so bland that there is no reason to spend more than 5 minutes traversing it before you AFK and que up for Duty finder. Teleportation should be a powerfull tool that is earned through playing the game. The world should slowly unfold to players, have purpose in every area, every quest, every NPC. The open world needs to exist for more than FATES and a un-ending ammount of quests that people skip through to level up.

The world should feel alive, as it stands it doesn't it's a backdrop for a lobby system.

I'll agree with this, teleportation itself is not the problem in fact no single aspect by their own merit is an issue, it's the combination of factors together where we begin to see something wrong.

Honestly Coerthas and Southern Thanalan (if it had only one Aetherite) are probably better designed zones when it comes to travel accessibility compared to others, however in the case of Coerthas it's only fault is that Natalan is a sorry excuse for a beastmen stronghold considering what it used to be (see 1.0 Natalan).

Solutions like removing an Aetherite in zones that have multiple (1 Aetherite per zone) and possibly scaling the cost of teleports in relation to frequency (the more often you teleport the more it costs until a reset back to base cost) would probably help the situation greatly.

In addition adding more "dangerous" mobs in the world that you would actually have to dismount and deal with rather than shrug off and leash would slow down the general travel time required to get anywhere without severely damaging the game or killing the teleport system altogether.

Another thing that really bugs me, is that the world of Eorzea in my mind doesn't really exist, all I can visualize are a few cities, Mor Dhona and zones I frequent, worst of these visualizations are all disconnected!

Compare that to other MMOs, where I can visualize which zones connect to which zones, how to travel from one place to another and imagine the gulfs between continents or the mountains up north.

In short I imagined these as single concrete whole worlds not a bunch of disconnected zones.


In WOW at least the flying transportation between towns actually flew you over the landscape, in FFXI we traveled so much to reach our camping grounds that we knew which zones connected to which zones and where these zones were in relation to the world map. Because of this I can probably see why I am so unengaged with FFXIV as it is now, sure some instances are fun, frontline and such, but to me it doesn't really feel like a real world. Not a world where I'd have fond memories of after I move on to the next game. Why would I care about a world that just feels unreal? These are all just a bunch of quest givers living in a fantasy themepark after all.


So yes Yoshi managed to salvage FFXIV, but in a rush to validate its existence, he has squandered any chance to build a truly memorable world that will last. FFXI and WOW are around still, because it had these things, I wonder how long FFXIV will last.

Well never heard anyone complain about teleports ever in game, just from a very small amount that are vocal about it on the forums. Also if you count up those who are against the OPs idea, you will see there are more who want it left alone than radically altered. aka majority.

Also as I said when I linked that TED talk, the majority of people don't really know what they want until they experience it themselves, givin that FFXIV is popular with a crowd of gamers that are used to the way things currently are of course they aren't going to be very open for change. If I was to make like you and pull numbers and majority opinions from the thin air, I would say alot of players would actually like the game more if they focused on the open world more than the instanced one and made the game more interesting, removing the teleport system as it is now and replacing it with something else.

But...I can't do that, so I can just say that I think the game could use for more open world content and the current teleport system hinders any attempt to make the world more vibrant, hunts for example wouldn't be as much of a god damn gong show if the entire server wasn't migrating across the map like a locust swarm that could teleport to farmers fields.

Monster like Odin and Behemoth could wander the land without being inside a timed FATE bubble.

There are alot of things you can do when you don't have mass transportation at every single players fingertips.

I bring alot of points to my argument, you just continue to hammer on that the "Majority" doesn't agree with me, and even if they do I don't care if they don't agree with me I'm free to make suggestions as much as I want.

Let me just pose a hypothetical to you.

What are some of the bad points of removing teleportation entirely, I'll give you a easy one as it's got alot of issue to just AXE the system outright, but let me see what you think would happen.

Let's leave the duty finder as it is, so you can still que up for a dungeon while you roam the world as long as you have walked to the entrance at least once.

I wont even try and counter that the game would never have any form of teleportation I'll say that everyone has to RUN everywhere not even chocobo. What are the big problems that arise in this situation, I can think of a few big ones how about you?

How would these changes affect you on a day to day basis playing the game, theory craft for me I'd like to see if you can come up with something I haven't considered when I suggested that teleportation be changed.

It only takes a few minutes to be anywhere in the overworld at a moments notice.

Over accessibility has ruined what I love about videogames as pseudo formed worlds. It's made them bureaucratic and stale.
More like tours than worlds. And while tours are nice, they don't hold a candle to the thrill of discovery by your own hand.

What is it with XIV (and XI) players with wanting the developers to implement things for us to NOT play the game? Going AFK while on a chocobo? Hated it in XI. Autorun across the plains? Hated it in XI. Airship? Good gravy talk about losing 10 minutes of my life for no good reason. When I think back to all the time I spent NOT playing the game versus PLAYING the game during my XI years and compare it to porting to Coerthas and immediately running to my first FATE of the day... Some things really should just be left in the past. It wasn't that great. Really, I promise you.

You may prefer walking, but I would prefer to have to crawl everywhere. It'd make the world feel even larger than it is.

Although, I do feel as though there is an alternative here.

I could just, y'know, not use the teleport ability. Just like how there are buses and trains in the real world, if I feel like walking I can do that. I'm not forced to use them.

Don't get me wrong, I am not at all in favor of removing the teleporting system. My suggestion was supposed to be implemented in ADDITION to it, so people have the OPTION to use a slow, free means of transportation that'll have the neat little side effect of improving some other people's "immersion" by having more people actually travelling around rather than just showing up out of nowhere at the Aetheryte. And making the Chocobo Porters interconnected IS a rather reasonable thing, because as they are now, they are nigh useless.

Haven't gone through the whole thread, but I caught the start of this the other day and wanted to hit on a couple of things.


1) Removing teleports does not 'encourage exploration'.
Running directly from A to B is not 'exploration', especially if you've already run that path countless times before, and that's all that removing teleports will accomplish on that front.
What will encourage exploration is a world conducive to exploration. The tiny, heavily structured world we're given, however, does not. Even if everyone suddenly did start wandering off the beaten path, it would become dreadfully apparent that the world is very small, its actual scale is pitiful and there's really not enough to see or experience that 'exploration' would remain a viable past-time. They'd have to raze the whole landscape again (and handwave the change in scale) for ARR to have a compelling world to explore.

2) While having events scattered about is good, not everything in the world needs something to actively do there.
This one is personal opinion obviously, but I always see people saying that expanding the world is pointless unless you fill it with events, dangerous monsters, etc, and I disagree with that. With all the annoyance I tend to hear about the 'theme park' model, I'm kind of surprised there's such a desire to force all new locations to feature an overt 'attraction'. Really, this is the kind of thing that's started to bug me in these games; they can't just add things that are simply part of the world to enjoy and admire. Every place, feature, and point of interest in the world tends to exist as a prop for an event/quest/fate/whatever to be built around.

And with respect to exploration, the idea of adding in mobs that actively make you want to avoid an area? ...
Well, I suppose I can see some appeal to that, but overall it impedes the feeling of 'exploration' and the ability to simply enjoy the world, rather than enhances it, in my eyes. Honestly, I like to sightsee. And when I'm doing so, I don't want to fight. Normal mobs are bad enough and combat simply becomes a massive annoyance that interferes with my ability to wander about and enjoy the scenery since I've got to keep dealing with that distraction.

I'd actually just like to see large areas of pure nature added. No settlements, outposts, or scouts 2 feet away from everything (I'm looking at you, GW2), but just large areas where you can wander off for 30 minutes in one direction without being smacked in the face with a FATE, a quest, or any signs of 'modern' civilization. Maybe have some caves, ruins, etc. to explore and periodically update them with new, unannounced, hidden changes here and there. No real 'features' or anything; more like 'some ice melted and a new passage way appeared' or 'A bunch of deer have moved into this part of the forest' or something.
And while I'd love simple naturescapes as mentioned above, the obsidian sanctum from GW2 is the best example I've experienced of how I feel exploration should be handles (sans the PvP, that is. That was a terrible idea.) Parts of it are a bit gimmicky and feel contrived, admittedly, but the simple feel there... amazing.... When I saw the area leading to the Crystal Tower, I saw a small glimmer of the potential for that in this game. Granted, that... didn't pan out, but still. :-(

Well I am going to answer this question with: What I would want? and What should be implemented? ( May not be exactly what I want but I can deal with it for the game to be better.)

What I would want? I Don't mind teleport, teleports are essential within the lore of the story and what not. Using them everywhere you turn does make the game feel like a "Speed Run". So what I want out of teleports is to have FFXI like teleports where a certain job has the only access to traveling of sorts.

What should be implemented? ( Within a realistic expectation by the games design.) A restriction of sorts FFXIV 1.0 Anima system was great for just that, however with a little tweaking perhaps you can only go to X destination once every 5-6 hours ( Each area you travel to has it's own time limit).

Overall, Just give open world travel more meaning ( What are mounts for? Show and tell?), I don't care how you do it as long as we don't instantly travel there.

It showed that some of the crystals were damaged and unusable, they could easily do that now and tie it in with story and not do any damage.

-I'm not sure how making people travel the overworld as it currently is would be a negative, as it's been stated previously even without the teleports it would take about 10 minutes (Less really) to reach any point of the map you want. This is linked to my next point.

Why wait for the expansion to change this? I asked what negatives you could tell me if the system was just whole hog removed and all I see is.

Now to be fair, those quests are already terrible.

On that point I'm always perplexed as to why some quests have multiple NPC's standing beside eachother that you need to talk to individually to complete a entire conversation, it's even worse when it's split between several cutscenes they should have just spliced into one!

Quests should follow a logical course of

-Start point A
-Quest objective B
Turn in location C

Don't overly use backtracking to other NPC's just because they aren't present in the final location. Nobody would treck across the world to send a message, just to treck all the way back to tell them that the guy got the message, christ the linkpearl network is a system they use in the game and quests...use the damn thing instead of making us prance allover the place.

Hell why can't we accept a quest from a NPC and unless we need to actually return to them for some important reason (Turn in a item or something) Why can't we report the quest complete to them via linkpearl?

transport is there if you want to use it. if you feel transport limit your experience you don't have to use it. why would you limit other players to fit your play experience.

Because ITT, the universe revolves around them. If they don't like something it obviously has to go! Damn the X million other players, who cares about them? If only we were more sensitive to the fact that the people who want teleports removed have a gun pointed at their head and are being told to teleport or die. If only they had the choice not to teleport! D'oh!

So tell me, what is it about this discussion that has you so riled up?

Nobody sensable is Demanding that teleportation be removed. We are however tossing around our ideas as to why we think it would be a good thing. Is there a problem with this.

It's not hostility. I'm pointing out where most of this stems from. It's been said many times that nobody has to teleport yet people keep arguing a case for it's removal. If you don't want to use it, don't. You can make that choice with no detriment to anyone who doesn't want teleports removed. It's selfish for people to say "I don't want to use teleports so please remove them" and yes, several people have said just that. Riled? I'm not riled at all. You just don't read irony very well my friend. ;)

You know very well that's not what people are saying at all.
The very aspect of teleports is damaging to content, specifically the overcrowded hunts and general use of an overworld as an overworld and not just a collection of small hub points.
That's why some people are asking for its removal/nerf. To make more prominent content better, not to hurt you personally.
