That's due to how they handle gear in this game. Our characters are essentially legos - our feet and legs are separated and get swapped out whenever we equip something new and "pop in" together to form our character models. For them to create stockings that go farther than the ankles, they'd need to create a piece of feet gear that "continues" it; while wearing anything else than the "continued" footwear would return you to the 'abrupt end' issue. or they could make a leg piece that occupies both the feet & leg slots - but you'd give up your choice of footwear.

Here's my experience:
I found that Fortune teller
I bought her elixer
I did small talk with her.
She didn't mention anything about a Black Boar Gate.
Told me doom would find me.
Told me to buy her Elixers.

Looked here. No one mentions it.
I look on Reddit. They tell me it's at Black Boar Gate behind a house, and they knew because they data mined it even before the event.
After some asking around, someone finally said that the Fortune Teller would mention avoiding Imps by the Black Boar Gate.

I have no reason to walk by Black Boar Gate of any information I was given.

Maybe code in something to the legs itself or the shoes to detect certain items and continue them. It sometimes makes glamours annoying to work with since it bothers me so much.

I was legitimately disappointed with the Valentines day event. The entire time I was expecting the two npc's to finally confess their love for one another but nah SE had to stick with the old "their just good friends" trope.

If they really wanted to focus on non romantic love then they should have made it about the Grandfather and his Granddaughter learning to bond with one another despite hardships they have faced. The story feels rushed and unfinished. The entire time it's heavily implied that they secretly cared for one another but didn't want to drive the other away by confessing.

I feel like SE wimped out plain and simple.

In terms of the event I had fun with the actual game portion, the maze and trial concept is fun - they should keep adding to and playing with stuff like it (imo). Also it gave me the feeling they could make some bomberman content for the Saucer or an event, especially seeing that YoshiP has some literal experience making those games (not suggesting bomberman should be for valentines, just had a "oh seeing this then I think that could be fun!" feeling).

I was however very confused on how the elixir (item needed to get sword and knife) related to anything and felt it didn't belong, that they maybe just wanted to add a few items to the cash shop later.. or something. Now that the game is a few years old and there are seasonal events stacked upon seasonal events it would be nice if they added a one time grindy quest to earn one previous reward. Perhaps from a list of content 2 years or older, so SE doesn't take away from the pool of people who'd likely buy but also don't make it feel like an ever growing mountain of "tough kupo nut". Or.. if they keep stacking all these housing items behind the wall use that money and make some instanced housing (like Wild Star), please.. I know I have no power here lol, but it would be great to see all that housing related money funded into a future proof housing system (make it account bound instance if it's too much data for each character). An alternative idea is on the anniversary event they make an event to earn a one time from previous seasonal(s), in this way it's one item a year rather than one item from a previous seasonal a year (making it an easier sell to the company).

For the story it was fine, I think on a platonic level it would have been more interesting with two males but honestly whatever not an issue to me besides a vague "would have been different". I don't think SE wimped out making some romance they were afraid to do (maybe they were, but I don't think so). As SE has done it before in stuff. I can think of a few occurrences (like that hard mode dungeon) and it's all been story telling wise and not some self back patting bludgeon telling people how to be or think (doesn't matter on what issue that I agree or disagree, I dislike "let me teach you" bludgeon pieces). So I think they're doing great so far. I'm not worried if SE did tell a story like that next year or whatever quest but I think them feeling like that they HAVE to would ruin the element of smoothness they've done so far (so hopefully they don't feel compelled to, but neither feel compelled not to).

It was annoying to find the imp without any clue.
I did the quest with my main and some alts and the problem is that the message with the hint given by the Furtive Fortune-teller is random.

No point getting the knife for glamour since it is offhand item you will only see if your crafting item that uses it. Been better if it was for paladin weapon glamour instead.

That said, I'd have to say the search for the two weapons was definitely...not that easy. Especially since I kept getting the same fortune every time. Someone had to tell me where it was.

And as we can see, the knife or the gigas sword had no relation to the event. They were just added to make the event rewards dont look so empty. Not everyone owns a plot and not everyone is interested in housing decoration (lets be honest here, nobody cares for your plot except your friends maybe)

Willing to bet the knife and sword are more clues about next expansion since that is what the fortune teller is foreshadowing. We'll probably see the gigas and tonberries involved in some fashion.

I have mixed feelings about that. I don't mind the actual event content to be recycled - I like the readings, and I like the maze. Always fun to run it with friends for kicks, especially if we're both IC on our characters.
But it is recycled, which only makes all the more obvious how little they invested in this event. There was a very minimal number of NPCs involved, the dialog was short and lackluster, and even their attempt to be 'lol it's not just for couples' fell flat, a forced attempt to be innovative when it would've been a bit more innovative if they had done the ladies properly.
And the weapons... I disagree with the people who said here that it was hard to find the other event vendor. When you pick up the repeatable quest, they tell you about a "fake" fortune teller who's in plain sight when you go to the 'legit' fortune tellers. She tells you about the black boar gate, which you can find on the map. And once there, it's very easy to see the magic pot, and see what it wants for the event items.
But the problem with that is that whatever hopes we had to have a lore reason to why these are the Valentoine's event's awards... died a horrible death. They simply didn't have it in them to invest in this event and probably used existing glamours from something else and slapped them on the event.

I finished the event, and maybe it was because I was expecting more, but it's one of the worst ones in recent memory. At least with Heavensturn we know what to expect so there's no disappointment, but the Valentine's events have been one of the consistently better ones. My main issue was how short it was and how it involves random npcs we don't know and won't see again. I liked last years Hatchingtide where there were 12-ish different scenes with npcs we already know. I don't mind the recycled content, but at least please include npcs the player can be familiar with. New characters are fine, but having some familiar ground to start off with would help. I'm pretty sure there was much more for the event planned, with included more reasoning behind the weapons, but it seemed like there were gaps as if things were scrapped because of lack of time.

I'm hoping for a better Little Lady's day event. With the Songbirds not in the picture anymore, they can work on something new.

Yeah if I had to expand upon the recyle I'd probably be with this. Sorry Jandor if it made it look like I thought it was the best event ever, I just happened to like the gameplay and still like it now lol (to me it felt like the Darkmoon Faire gone for a while and then visiting again).

As for the rewards... I think the housing rewards for every season event tend to be cute but due to how their housing system works also makes them semi.. annoying? Abrasive? Maybe annoying isn't the right word but I think I'd be in love with housing items if they had a system in place that could support every player, but they don't and those rewards tend to make up the majority of rewards for a seasonal which gives me that "SE this is great, now take the money you get from these and fix housing". Yes yes I know its not easy or free (far from it); although, I feel they might be able to get away with data issues if they make it account wide (such that you may enter the house from any character, if that causes too much stress maybe "data center" wide might be the better wording here). Meanwhile don't demolish the current houses, but let players use the moving feature to the instanced more powerful area if they want to take advantage of the features (and take all their house bound items with them). I strongly believe and am sad they haven't started every player with a mog room (FFXI) and built the system up from there (upgrades, gardens, etc, perhaps moving the room to a dimension of "mog space" where they drop a huge feature set on us like changing sky box).

On to equipment.. The knife and sword don't really fit as many have said (I think everyone? haha). I'm sure they're trying to play some sort of foreshadow for shadowbringers (maybe we're going to find a Tonberry beast tribe?), but I think it would have been better as an easteregg. While they have some other sort of reward like a pink mammet minion with unique animations and emote interactions, and a tarot card emote (that comes with random tarot card reveals :) ).

I liked the maze too, I would have liked a new maze, or an expansion of the maze, or just something.

Can't say that I like getting basically the same event as last year but this time with worse rewards though.

SA- I actually I agree with the issue presented, I know my post that you first quoted seemed light but it was just a quick my feelings thing (and mostly based on that I never expect to see something I'll want to use from a valentines event, so like the best thing about the event is the gameplay to me lol).

I understand the sentiment that it didn't feel they had their hearts (lol? :)) in this event.

So beast tribe when? lol :p. Obviously "where" they appear needs to be explained but I don't see why we can't have them under the beast tribe mechanic, and how most of the world would probably perceive them as such.

Also it would be neat to see a rebuild of part of Nym story-line :).

I know the lore of the Tonberry up to level 50 quest, not sure beyond that but to what I know there is nothing that could stop the formation of a beast tribe mechanic in the game so far (except maybe some people feeling uncomfortable I'm calling them beasts lol).

The fortune teller that is west of the amphitheater aetheryte (west of the waterfall/moogle mail, sort of around the corner) has elixir to sell.

Behind the house north of the Lancer guild aetheryte is a magic pot (imp demon thing), he'll take 1 elixir for 1 knife or sword (so bring two).

Okay, enlighten me then. Why can't there be a group of tonberry that you help out (the beast tribe mechanic)? It sounds very implausible that the lore has been so locked up it can't be made to happen. Even if they were written to be dead SE could always find some run away tribe else where, or a new plague set of victims.

This reminds me of how stubborn people were with how it just can't be done with Summoner and different larger egi (which was done later). The lore while it should be respected (retcons are bad) is not something that is very likely to prevent much of anything from happening given enough wiggle (as SE has frequently done themselves, showing they willingly do it).

Because they aren't beasts.

And the last SCH quests deal with finding a cure to remove the disease, so in theory they will eventually revert back to Lalafells.

I cannot accept that as reason enough to stop SE from putting the Tonberry under the Beast Tribe Relation's bar and adding them into the beast tribe mechanic where in you help them rebuild their civilization. Really such a simple issue could be fixed by changing a few words in a UI or adding a new section below it (or they could leave the label and just suggest that most people in civilization see them as beastmen because they couldn't possibly not be, dang judge-y society ! heh).

This edit has better reasoning, but you could still put them in the tribe system - the end result might be significantly different though (they unbecome a beast tribe at the end? might be interesting). Or.. new plague victims may happen, or you could always never give them a cure.. XD. Attempted but failed to find a cure lol. Many things could be said to make it happen without breaking lore, unless the lore has been written so strictly which I doubt (like we get a new more powerful Bitoso, new plague).

The tonberry knife is kind of cute for 'cutting cake' I guess? Except wait, don't you only see the off hand for DOH classes when crafting certain recipes? I kind of wish it was like, a really tiny paladin sword or ninja daggers instead.

Not sure why a DRK sword is there outside of a vague connection of DRK and the holiday being connected to Ishgard.

I think what they're referring to is to have a similar mechanic, like the beast tribes (do a bunch of little quests, rank up, etc.), but not call them a beast tribe. I think something like what we did with the Doman Enclave or custom deliveries (or a mix?) would be more suitable for them though. I would really like to have more scholar and tonberry info.

Yeah, even though I was not versed on the lore of Tonberry.. I knew they weren't merely beasts already, but to me I think any outsider would look at them and call them exactly that - so I am fine with the word used loosely even if not purely accurate out of the lore concept that others would use it anyways (beastmen seems more like "third world country" word usage anyways lol). So I used the word in what I felt was fitting context, while also knowing they weren't technically like a Vanu Vanu or Gnath. Well I am now far more read on the tonberry lore than before though since I was challenged that it couldn't happen (just read a few quest logs and summaries). I still believe the only thing preventing it from happening is people not wanting it, because it is open enough to add into the game further (you'll have to explain what they're doing but that's true of anything).

I think your doman example is pretty good, I'd be full for that. I just think the daily quest system of beast tribe would be nice as well. So if it was a doman enclave building up with beast tribe mechanic as well, then oh yeah that'd be awesome (throw in a delivery person as well for good measure lol). I think tracking the progress and receiving ranked up quests is fun, which is why I specific mentioned it under the beast tribe system. Although again I think you can argue the word use of beastmen was fine too, at least that's why I chose to use it with full knowledge of their technical true race status. Since beastmen appears to be a sort of derogatory "nonstandard, third world" word anyways (and tonberry were set back so hard they apply to both lol) - one of the big things was each beast tribe has a primal but we don't.. however with our star signs, Knights of the Round, Odin (ish..), and Phoenix existing I'm not really sold that we don't either (just maybe haven't bothered to summon and pass down the tradition in the same was the beastmen have).

Also consider that the plague victims are called Tonberry based off a myth creature (quoting the ffxiv wiki here), could always just introduce us to the real tonberries. There are so many ways to make it work, if one wanted to do so lol.

Pretty disappointing rewards for me. Going to pass I think on the event this year.

On a more serious note, most of the beast tribes in the game are established as such before the quests become available. There are typically good and bad/tempered factions; areas on the world map allocated for each of the respective tribes, and a diety/primal they worship. Moogles would be the exception as a tribe of hostile moogles are not really found in the open world. They're kind of a blend of both good and bad honestly as both ill and good intent come out cute with them.

Tonberries just don't fit in with that theme. With the current beast tribes, we tend to be a part of preventing an unfavorable fate headed their way. With Tonberries, the poor guys are already the victims of said fate.

WTB decent event rewards. The last couple events have just had really boring rewards.

Haha Namazu I think about specifically when you say preventing something from happening lol. That fire wipe away was cute :3. But wouldn't the moogle also be an example of building something up, lining up with the idea of helping rebuild Nym or at least some portion of it for the Tonberry's hopeful cure? With the moogles we were basically helping them take care of the land, which they were uh.. so.. so.. great at yeah.. XD. Appears that moogles make up many exceptions to the expectations lol.

Not that I'm saying they have to be called beastmen, I think a triple triad card used to call them beastmen but was changed to manlike perhaps to smooth out lore (appears at least from digging through the wiki). I'm just saying I'd like to see them under the beastmen system, mostly at least - I think the word beastmen at this point is fairly loose and is more like "looks different" or perhaps "third world, not as civilized as us" (like a Pocahontas setting where he calls them savages and she is like "u wot?" lol). Since most of the unique distinctions besides looks seem to be at this point remove-able or very ignore-able and minor. Like one of the more unique issues is primals but we've been shown with enough energy we can become and create primals like the knights of the round, shiva, pheonix, etc. Imo it seems our star signs maybe something like that (there is a minor quest were some people talk about summoning Rhalgr), maybe with shadowbringer coming even our service to the crystal was all a bunch of "would you kindly" lol. WoL can't be tempered because they're already tempered.. :O (I know it's the echo, but could also be an echo aka already brain washed lol)

You should be able to do the maze multiple times so you can get all the items from the shop (as many times as you want). I own like 5 of each item, so at least when it's working then yeah you can get the rewards many times.

It is score based though, I'm not sure if you get nothing at a lower value but I got 3 at least when you're ranked meant to be or whatever they called it lol (stay in the nice blue for the first part and not missing too many card guesses).

We're unlikely to get the tonberries as a beast tribe because they're heavily involved in the Scholar questline. That's where we're almost certain to see a resolution to their story and (I hope!) the eventual breaking of the curse.

Is it evil that I hope not, just because I like tonberries? lol. I would concede having them be both in detail for the scholars, and everyone else would be difficult lol (especially if you don't want to make one side or the other seem unimportant in terms of the affect you have on them). Although still I think you might be able to bind the end of the scholar tonberry chain with an open to everyone doman enclave like idea mentioned previously by DevonEllwood.

However~! As I went onto read, unless the wiki lied, they're called Tonberries because they look like the creature from myth (actual tonberries). So.. I have a solution for everyone. Introduce the creatures from myth, the OP stabby stabby bring you nightmares tonberry. Then, save the ones from the scholar quest. Ours are not actually tonberries even. They're just messed up (due to the void sent plague), they're not even a "tonberry". Calling them tonberry is about as accurate as calling them beastmen (maybe they're not accurately defined as beastmen, but to the outside they could look like one - similarly that's how they earned the name Tonberry if the wiki is to be right), according to the game's own lore then lol. Sort of a Indians of the US sort of issue, they're not really what they're called. Or in other words give me enough rope and I will find a way to make it happen, just because I can.. ;)
