Does that mean since I'm a Lalafell I have to ride a dodo?
Because anima doesn't take you everywhere you want, it takes you to predetermined locations. On a chocobo you can still get somewhere pretty quickly. Say you're in a party but they aren't near a camp. You teleport to the closest camp and then rent a chocobo to ride to your party (that's assuming we'll be able to rent chocobos at camps). That's why we need chocobo rentals. I'd rather have the rentals and wait on the goodies rather than wait on everything especially if they've already finished the idea of the rentals. They're giving us what they can when they can. Just because you don't want to ride around on a chocobo for fun doesn't mean others don't.
And the reason all this talk is going around is because WE wanted information so they let us in on their plans. It's better than them keeping quiet about it. Now we at least have something to look forward to in the future.
The part I bolded is a brave assumption. They haven't talked about that but I trust in them that they will allow that because otherwise, as I said, they'd end up being pointless.
And don't get me wrong I'm glad they came out and told us, but that doesn't mean I can't be dissapointed at the news, mostly because we were told that they weren't there from the start to avoid an implementation as bland as this one. Then they went ahead and did it just to get them in there somehow, which to me shows either lack of originality (they really haven't come up with anything yet so they're just doing what they can) or lack of workforce if it took them this long to implement something as simple as rental mounts.
It shows to me their loyalty to the players by giving us something we need in the game to utilize. And yes, it is a brave assumption, but I don't see them only putting them only in city-states simply because, like you said, they would be useless, which I'll agree is a worry for me.
I don't think implementing Chocobos into a Final Fantasy game is particularly showing customer loyalty, considering its a FINAL FANTASY GAME and they're implementing CHOCOBOS, not some incredibly new foreign concept we've never heard of before.
Regardless, I hope the "good stuff" comes quick because for me personally a rental mount will get boring fast, really fast.
Everything that the original team told us led by Tanaka can effectively be thrown out the window, it holds no water any longer. (NOT implementing things because NOT everything is ready...) Yoshi P doesn't believe in making us wait and is willing to give at least part of the chocobo stuff now. IF it wasn't for the crazy battle and class changes we might already have had them too.
Why does it take so long to put in Rental Chocobos?
If you remember they did indeed have something different in mind for it and given that XIV released largely unfinished and needed to be fixed, clearly they weren't going to keep dropping feature after feature into the game.
When the New Managerial Team took over, things changed. We were also supposed to have gotten Hamlet Defense by early 2011, but that changed as well. It's pretty simple really if you took more than a second to think about it,
Not to mention you have to determine where chocobos can go and where they can't. Can chocobos go underground? Can chocobos go into dungeons? Do chocobos use the same terrain collision rules as players? Since there are no zone lines, can you use chocobos inside cities?
If not, how do you stop players from riding into no-chocobo areas? Do you eject the player off the chocobo immediately? Do you have the game give a warning?
See, lots of stuff to get settled.
Yoshi even mentioned in one of the most recent interviews all the work involved in implementing chocobos. This suggests it was really complicated, they had made no progress prior to the new team working on it, and/or they are going to do something special. I think it was a combo of the first two options and, hopefully, eventually the third.
I really do think they should stick with just Chocobo's.
However, not just the yellow variety. Different colors that can be breeded would be great!
If possible, it would be nice to see a chocobo that mirrors the job playing it.
Example: White Mage rider makes chocobo wear a pope hat and a white/red harness.
It would be one mount, with lots of customization options. Something that hasn't really been seen yet in online games.
Know what amuses me about that site? http://how-to-spell-ridiculous.com/goal-status/
Misspelling of the word 'Ridiculous' has been on the rise since the sites creation! :O
It sucks so hard that my PC gamepad is busted after 5 years of service before I get to ride chocobos everywhere...
I think that this is right on the money. The devs probably plan to rely on the anima system much less in the future. At first the various transportation systems may seem to overlap each other. By the time the area redesign hits, however, the transportation system will probably make much more sense. Yoshida has said that the areas will undergo changes in geography, and he has also confirmed that FFXIV will no longer revolve around guildleves. These two points are very important when considering the future of the transportation system.
Since most content in XIV was originally meant to take take the form of guildleves, most of the time you would be traveling from town to an aetheryte (and possibly on to an aetherial node). From there you would do whatever it was you had come to do. In such a situation, it would always be faster to teleport to the aetheryte and get started. Moving away from a levequest-centered system most likely means moving away from aetherytes. If your quest starts and ends at a quest hub while taking you to some far-flung corner of the map, teleportation becomes less convenient.
Still, people who argue that teleportation and walking will still save time are probably correct. Teleportation becomes LESS convenient, but it still may be the fastest way to travel. That's where the area redesign comes in. The geograpy of the maps will be changing, potentially drastically. Yoshida has referred to the redesign in Japanese as a 大改修 (daikaishuu), which roughly translates to "huge revision". (He added 大 (big, great) to the word 改修 (revision, improvement) to emphasize the large scale/scope of the planned changes.) Given the decreased focus on levequests, it's reasonable to assume that our future areas may not be littlered with aetherytes and aetherial nodes at every corner. If this is the case, anima teleportation will no longer be the principal means of travel.
If you're like me, this is great news. But before you jump for joy, you should be aware that Yoshida has indicated that the area redesign will take a very long time. To be precise, he referred to the area redesign as a 年単位の作業 (nentan'i no sagyou). Though I can't locate it for the life of me, at the time Reinheart was nice enough to provide an English translation of the post in which Yoshida said this. It was translated as something like "long-term operation", which is a correct translation. (Reinheart is better at Japanese than I am, and always provides good translations for the English-speaking community soon after Japanese posts hit. Thank you Reinheart!!) However it's worth noting that, though it became "long-term" in the English translation, the term 年単位 (nentan'i) doesn't really have a good English equivalent. The word itself is composed of 年 (year) and 単位 (unit). Essentially, referring to the area redesign as a 年単位の作業 indicates that it will probably take at least a year. The term is fairly vague, and could indicate multiple years, but that seems unlikely in this case. The dev team only has so long before XIV becomes "outdated". Furthermore, using the term 年単位 and then having the job take two or three years would result in a very disappointed Japanese user base, so a different term would most likely have been used.
So don't expect the area redesign to come anytime soon. We may have a nice transportation system before then, but I doubt that it will be EXACTLY as the new devs want it until the new areas are in place.
Sorry for the very long post. I'll quote the post where Yoshida used the terms 大改修 and 年単位の作業 at the bottom of this message for those who are interested in checking it out. It's fairly long, so I'll hide it. Also, in the interest of full disclosure, I should say that the interpretation of what 年単位 "really" means came from my wife, who is Japanese. When inquiring into the inferred meaning of a word or phrase I've found it's always best to ask a native. :)
Speak for yourself!
And, please, allow me to elaborate. Things like mounts are usually a necessity for MMORPGS. I cannot think of any upcoming or newly released MMOs that don't have mounts, even just to rent. Eden Eternal is a F2P MMO. What do you know, it was released just the other day with mounts. Ragnorak Online 2 is another example, the game is crap and is being panned in reviews even though it's only in beta tests. Even it has mounts.
The fact that SE still doesn't have mounts suggests that they are understaffed or that the staff was too busy making the game really cool. Since the latter is obviously not a possibility, the former seems pretty valid.
Excuse me?
For someone that allegedly stalks me so much you don't do a very good job.
I am always defending this game. (And protecting it from people that want to destroy it, people like Yoshi maybe).
All I am saying is: observational techniques would lead one to the conclusion that FFXIV is understaffed in certain areas.
Not having mounts on release (even if they were supposed to come with some breeding programme or whatever) is evidence of a malnourished workforce.
There's no need to have a heart-attack because I pointed out the obvious.
Well they told us they're going to be just rentals for the time being, which from my POV justifies quite a bit of the complaining (remember, they weren't in the game at launch so they could be "more than mounts").
Yes I know that was said before Yoshi-P came around, but that doesn't mean every piece of work they had done till then was thrown out the window! It's not like he jumped into the office and lit everything on fire so they could start again from absolutley nothing!
To me this either means that Tanaka lied to us in the first place (very likely) OR it was just so far from completion that it actually took them this long just to get some simple rental mounts in. And please, I'm happy we're even getting chocobos but don't tell me a rental mount is worth getting all excited for. It's pretty much the standard for any MMO nowadays, although in fairness FFXIV lacks plenty of industry standards even 10 months after release.
Ughhhh I just realized that Chocobo is still a rental, been playing non-SE MMOs lately where you can summon a mount at anytime and forgot about this archaic system. Anyways, that blows major one. Going to have to talk to stupid NPCs yet again, gg Yoshi P.
Lololol, I don't know how many times this just doesn't get through some people's brains; features that should have been added ages ago took a back seat to what Yoshi wanted to do right away instead. THAT's why it's taking so long, that's why we're only getting parts of them at a time instead of the whole thing in one patch.
Really? How hard is that to grasp? We know Tanaka lied about the state of the game or at least said enough to mislead just about everyone. Let's just get on with it already, we're getting closer to the game we should have had and we were TOLD point blank this is why we're not getting charged to play yet, because it would take some time.
I swear people will still be bringing up old grievances from launch and Tanaka's time 2 years from now...
Excuse me what about griffin towers? Pretty sure most MMOs have rental horses, griffins, whatever or teleports, or both. The personal mounts are coming too. >.>
*throws towel* I'm done. ;P
Perhaps there's some lore tie-in with Ishgard that's holding up the real chocobo system. Who knows.
In the meantime, rental is fine. However, if in the future, we don't have summonable Chocobos, it will definitely be a reminder of how archaic SE still is. Set in their ways.
It's hard being the voice of reason on a forum with so many old-souls who don't know any better and can't imagine anything better than what they've been fed by SE through FFXI, but there really is a problem with SE if they reproduce the same mount-system they had in FFXI.
for example, in FFXI, even the mounts you owned could only be summoned on a cooldown and for a limited time. It's like, why? SE thinks they understand the art of seduction but they don't come across as mysterious by withholding so much, they just come across as stingy and limiting.
This is all on the proviso that they do indeed reproduce the same mount system from FFXI which im sure they wont. (so no offence SE if you've changed).
They should have been in at release, not an afterthought 1 year later.
If they just add them as rentable mounts in 1.19 then why the fk couldnt they do that a year ago.
It boggles my mind that some of the main things that fans love from the final fantasy games were missing from ff14 at release and still are.....
