Not that this is important, at all, to anyone, but I'd go with "azure spirit cannon." No one in their right mind would actually directly translate martial arts kanji compound abilities though, as Brannigan already mentioned.

It can be read both ways, I was just following how everyone else was saying it. But they are all standalone kanji with no relation to each other. The literal translation from that fact into English, would result to Blue Spirit Gun as the literal translation. Which was my point. There is no other literal translation than this. Your idea works, but it's in no way a literal translation, more like a personal translation.

If we were to look for a better translation in direct relation to the Japanese name, I would go for Azure Essence Flare (Flare as in the ordnance firepower), well technically anything works in relation to each word.

It doesn't have to be the same with FFXI. The team can be creative whenever they want with the names as long as it does not stray too far.
I find Hallowed Ground, Defiance and Deliverance more creative and polished than words like Invincible, Defender and Destroyer.

Some of us never played FFXI, so we could give a crap what abilities were called there. I personally think Invincible, Defender, and Destroyer are boring names for those abilities. Hallowed Ground, Defiance, and Deliverance sound a lot better to me.

Quite misleading IMO, though. Especially Hallowed Ground, which I guess anyone would assume to be some kind of AoE spell just from the name alone. Defiance seems pretty straightforward to me: It's what you reduce CC effects with. And Deliverance clearly is a healing/ressing spell.

Think of it this way:
It's called Hallowed Ground because the PLD is "holding on their ground", and rendering themselves impervious to attacks.
With Deliverance, the WAR is abandoning all their sanity, liberating all their wrath and becoming uncontrollable.

I never said they *had* to be, only that it bugs me *personally.* I just personally like for continuity in ability names throughout the series.

Defiance is a fine ability name, though Deliverance is a rather weird since it's not really the same type of word as Defiance. You can perform an action "with defiance" (or more normally, "defiantly")--it's a noun describing a state of being. Deliverance, though, isn't--it's a different class of noun (a more familiar synonym would probably be Liberation). You don't perform an action "with deliverance," rather, it's something you provide for someone else (which would make it a decent name for like, a spell or ability that removed movement-impairing effects).

Abandon (the name of the stacks you get from Deliverance) would have been better word choice for the stance (as in, "attacking with abandon" i.e., recklessly) itself, IMO.

That's not really what Hallowed means at all, though. "Hallowed Ground" is holy or sanctified terrain in most fantasy, normally created through the use of magic or holy water. It's honestly kind of a weird choice phrase for what the ability does, as well--it would be more suited to something like Sacred Soil or Asylum.

Well traditiocnaly Paladins were not just knights. They were Holy Knights, blessed with Gods divine light and all that jazz. The issue in this case is that Paladins in this game are note sworn to a religion like say, Dragoons are, but are essentially Nanamo's bodyguards (since Raubahn and the Flames has their own duties, and are the younger group compared to the Sultansworn), Hallowed Ground might just be keeping in with the traditional flavor of the class.

I know. I've played D&D for years. The reason Hallowed Ground is a weird choice for the ability name is because it only affects the Paladin. It doesn't create a safe space or something along those lines. If the ability effect required them to remain in a certain area (like Ley Lines), it would fit just fine. But they aren't actually creating hallowed ground at all, so it's a bit off.

Sure they are, the ground they are occupying becomes hallowed, rendering them impervious to damage. It just follows them around, its not a field spell, but a target spell. :D

Sure, it's just, the visual effect doesn't jive with that at all. They briefly make a bubble around themselves (which doesn't even touch the ground). So the localized name is a bit of a loose fit.
