So for fun, I dusted off my WAR and went tanking. I made sure to inform every party I landed in, of my lack of knowledge where WAR is concerned.

Leveling roulette. Stone Vigil, with a WHM using an ilvl 28-29 wand and targe. No big pulls then. All I can say about that run is that we didn't wipe. Also, the dungeon dropped us another, level-appropriate targe, the WHM immediately won it... and proceeded to not equip it. Of course.

Except of Dun Scaith's first boss with the tiles, at that point it basically is an enrage. But otherwise yeah.

Also, the Ivalice raid is super fun, even with all the wipes and all. I love healing it, the first runs were pushing us to the limit (with all the raises, mana and healing all the time I barely get to dps lol). Even had a run where we wiped about 4 times on the first boss and then about 10 times on the second where we had only 30 minutes left on timer, my gear was on 45 % and we still haven't beaten him... at that point abandon was a good idea. Still, fun - normally groups clear it with wipe here and there and I enjoy the fights thoroughly. Great raid! (I always loved 24-mans haha)

Sounds like others had more luck then me when it came to their first run of Ivalice. My first run ended up in a "Vote Abandon!" thanks to a little over half the players in the said run basically being... jerks (to put it lightly) over the tiniest bit of struggle. At least others had more fun then me on their first attempts. I ended up dealing with rage quitters on my very first attempt on day 2 of patch week. :/ (I would have done this on patch day if I didn't have real life work to think about and didn't do the MSQ first, which took longer to finish then I thought this time)

To explain...

Being new to the raid during my first attempt, I of course had no bloody clue what to expect like many of the other players going through it on their first time. Thankfully, I pride myself on learning things fast. The first boss did give the alliance trouble, but we got it down on the second try. It wasn't until we reached the second boss that things started to go haywire. (And from the sounds of things, it seems the second boss is currently the hardest fight in this raid. The new Ozma perhaps?)

We end up dieing to the boss 2 times. (It was around that time I had noted how the boss's "Dash across the room" attack works. "Be on the side that doesn't have the glowy wing. Gotcha.") Moments after I had thought that, the MCH in my party throws some minor insults at me for my rez macro, but the amusing twist is that he claims he hates "all my macros"... when it's only the one. (Aside from the Caster LB I agreed to use when someone asked for the Caster LB on the golems... which ended up not being enough because too many others were dead and is what caused wipe #2, lol) I quick thought to myself "Would you rather I not raise people at all?" I'll admit though that my rez macro saw much more use this time around because... hey, people were dieing left and right. But even with that in mind, I can't really spam it because of how MP costly that is. And a Red Mage with no MP left is like any other spellcaster with no MP left... which is "I can't do anything!". I brushed it aside as a minor annoyance, as my mind was too focused on the attack patterns I've seen so far of the second boss, thinking up ways on how to best deal with the attacks.

It was at this moment that someone pointed out that the WAR of another alliance had just gone AFK to pick up the phone. Some people made polite jokes about that, while other people started getting... nasty about that. And then... it happens. Someone brings up the "Vote Abandon" menu. It's declined the first time around. Then we sit there a few minutes waiting for the WAR to finish his phone call. And then... some people begin to leave. Not very many though. We ended up getting enough replacements to make another attempt at it, after an impatient pull happened by a non-tank. Sadly, we wipe again on our third attempt. Moments after, the "Vote Abandon" window pops up AGAIN. This prompts someone to point out in alliance chat that "It's only day 2 of patch week guys...". And then suddenly more people leave, starting with our DRK. The MCH who talked smack to me is out the door within seconds the moment the Tank leaves. And some others begin to leave. Meanwhile, the WHM on our team breaths a sigh of relief. Me and the WHM end up discussing Tank cooldown use as the WHM points out that the DRK, who was MTing for us for this raid, wasn't even bothering to use his defensive cooldowns. I don't think I need to tell you why a Tank not using defensive cooldowns is a bad thing. As someone who more often Tanks and Heals runs over DPSing runs because of the way cue times usually are in almost all other duties, I'm quick to agree with the WHM on that and point out how it makes my own Tank and Healer jobs weep.

Did I mention throughout the said conversation, "Vote Abandon" popped up several more times? All declined of course. At this point though, over half of the entire alliance has left. We eventually filled in a good number of those slots (including getting a different DRK on our team). But after noticing that no one else is coming in to fill the empty slots on the remaining alliances, the people just finally agreed to hit "yes" on "Vote Abandon". I ended up leaving that raid with a very bitter taste in my mouth.

Thankfully, the second attempt was MUCH better. People still died a lot, and everyone, including myself, was going "What the heck do I do here!?" to the mechanics of the final boss, but we cleared it many deaths later. (Again, myself included. I don't think I've died that much to bosses in quite some time, lol) Interestingly, we didn't actually wipe to the final boss. The cherry on top was that unlike the spite I got last attempt, I recieved a lot of praise this time for my rezzing on RDM, leaving with 3 commends.

By the end of the day (and this post), I really just want to echo what someone said in the alliance chat in my first attempt at the new 24 man raid:

It's patch week. Patch week = "Prepare to die many deaths as you attempt to learn the mechanics!". It was only day 2 of patch week. And yet we're encountering people who think that people should know the new 24 man raid like the back of their hand and to be flawless masters already. I repeat, it's PATCH WEEK. Deaths are expected!

I think that's why I left with a sour taste in my mouth from the first attempt. Years later into FFXIV and now 2 expansions in, people are still abandoning just recently released content at the tiniest hint of trouble. It's sad that there's a few too many people in this community that really need to learn how to grow a spine. :/

At one point, we were down to like 4-5 people that were still alive and nobody had healer LB3 available, and somehow the remaining healers managed to get almost everyone back up and beat the boss with a minute and a half remaining on the clock.

The fight went to hell at around 1 hour and 52 minutes, and you get to see the recovery that eventually ended in victory when a bunch of people in the alliance had given up hope on clearing. It was really one of the most amazing things I had ever seen.

Some of the loudest complainers are likely people who think that other people should know the raid, so that they themselves can get carried. Although you'd never get them to admit that of course.

That's been my experience. Had a run I mentioned a few pages back where the person who kicked up the most fuss and proclaimed they were carrying everyone basically spent most of the second boss dead. All so they could spend the time yelling at someone who casually asked about a mistake that was made. Low and behold, kicking them didn't magically ruin the run. If anything the healer we got in return was ten times better and had none of the attitude to boot.

My first run of it was a join in progress, at second boss...55min in. That was abandoned after one attempt after I joined(this was on patch day). Queue up again, get in again(turned off my join in prog so I could get a full run), and yes, there were a fair number of difficulties, but we managed to finish it(even learned the majority of the mechanics before...got to say the final boss has the most fun one to watch people screw up).

I didn't know the Atomos phase where people have to stand on pads had an enrage until my alliance hit it like 3 times today because someone in C wasn't looking at the chat.

I believe WoD...but could be LotA. Weeping City doesn't have Atmos that you need to stand on platforms for, as far as I can remember.

LotA you can for sure wipe if people don't stand on the platforms. Weeping City does have them it's when Ozma swallows you, not sure about the wipe there but don't think it'd be any different than LotA. Oddly enough, the ones from WoD are the ones I assumed the person was talking about as well.

I've been used to wiping Tower Climbing 24 mans a lot since they added the roulette, but in my two years of playing the game I had no idea that was even a thing that could happen there.

I main SCH. In my experience, shields are unnecessary in most if not all content I'd DF as AST for (roulettes). Hell, I don't use them much in the non-Savage raids. I would much rather leave a HoT ticking away than worry about reapplying a shield, so I will go Diurnal without shame. The rare times I've gone Nocturnal instead, the cohealer has been a useless floor tank and I've been left missing HoTs.

Had a rather... odd thing happen just the other day. I queue into leveling with a friend on Dark Knight and we get Cutter's Cut. Since it's a fairly easy dungeon, I drop Grit and pick everything up without it. We have no aggro issues and my HP barely moves. After the third or so pull, the healer chimes in about my pulling without Grit and I mention I won't need it unless I go bigger pulls; which I planned to do after, with Grit on then. She abruptly leaves right after I reply. No response but apparently my not using tank stance despite no issues whatsoever was enough to irk her.

Afterwards, we got a replacement and proceeded along without Grit no problem. Just never seen someone get uppity in the baby dungeon whenever I do that.

I'm like 99% sure your DPS on WHM in Cutter's Cry is a Stone and a single target Aero... but yeah, tank, lose 20% DPS when you actually have some form of AoE.

I mean I am clearly a proponent of healers getting to DPS but damn.

Sorry, but some content not having shields hurts.

Susano Normal hits surprisingly hard and three times recently I've had an AST paired with my WHM who uses Diurnal instead of Nocturnal.

Shields really help on him because his tank buster hits very hard and who knows what pants on head tank you'll get. I am not saying the tank not using cooldowns is the ASTs fault but simple fact is the AST could have seriously helped more if they had gone Nocturnal. His AoE also hits pretty hard and shields help especially if other players are making mistakes and getting water vulns.

So yeah sorry not going Nocturnal with a WHM is just not optimal. You are forgetting situations where not everything is going 100% with mistakes etc and depending on the content. I am not going to rally against an AST going diurnal in something where it 100% doesn't matter, but there are times it does.

I had a Shinryu (normal) run like this lately. I was on WHM but 2 DPS and both tanks were new. My AST cohealer went Diurnal and long story short we wiped because tanks didn't stack or properly mitigate Ahk Morns.

I asked her to go Noct and leave the AoE healing to me the second time around. It certainly put more strain on both of our MP supplies but through dilligent Aspected Benefic uses supported by some of my oGCD heals we kept those silly tanks up so they could keep soaking damage.

When you think about it a shield is just a frontloaded regen in that situation. There are most definitely lots of times that shields can save the day.

Pretty much. In Dun Scaith, if the Queen's LB bar got too high, your party was not going to survive without shields. Same case for the chariot boss in Rabanastre. Woe is the party that gets two WHMs as their healers...

Agreed... Unless you're passive aggressive jerk like me, and you're trying to get the WHM to catch the hint that they need to be doing better at their job :)

I'd gone a long time without running into any strange runs, outside a few with newer players that required a bit of extra attention, so I guess I was overdue.

My friend and I were in an Expert Roulette on Temple of Rhalgr with me healing as White mage and them on a Ninja. Everything up through the first boss seemed kosher. Tank was a bit squishy for the larger pulls but the walls were doing their job of keeping all that in check. Then suddenly after we defeat the first boss, the Dark Knight slams sprint and runs off, pulling everything from that boss until the next wall past the line AoE things. Now I've run the dang thing so many times, I know the pulls most people do and usually they stop at the point with the bear and the big aoe bird before moving on. Nope. Everything single thing pulled. I blow cool downs thinking 'ok we're dead' because her hp is going from 100% to 2% like a ping pong ball but by some miracle we seem to be managing it (bless WHM for their endless MP). Then the tank starts repeatedly spamming in chat 'Holy'. I ignore it a few times and then they resort to caps and I've had enough. Fine. I swiftcast and launch one holy off. Needless to say they die in the 2 secs it takes me to start trying to spam again and that's a wipe. We all start running back and they make some comment about me using it 'too late'. At which point my friend and the other dps inform the tank that they've never seen anyone do that pull. Ok. Good. I'm feeling better. I'm not the only one surprised they did that. Now surely we'll do the normal pull and-

They do it again. Only this time they grab all the mobs and then begin running back and forth around the corner just before the wall. They run out of my LoS several times but I manage to find a place backed up to the edge where I can see them the full route and start blowing cooldowns again. Only issue is our dps are a Ninja and a Dragoon and now they're having to chase the mobs too and obviously suffering a dps loss from missing positional skills etc. We pull of a miracle and get through the it but now we're all standing there confused. The interaction following goes like this:

Me: "Um....What was that???"
Tank: "It's called kiting."
Ninja: "....but kiting doesn't work. You were still getting hit."
Tank: "Well yeah. You need sprint."

I spend the rest of the run trying to work out the logic only to realize that the tank very clearly has it out for me after that. She goes so far as to intentionally kill me during the last boss. My friend had died near the end and hit respawn by accident but we clearly had it in the bag. Then the stack marker hits me and I move into where the tank is. At which point she hits sprint and books it. Yep. Dead. Boss dies, she leaves. The only half decent part of it was that as soon as she did the other DPS turns around and says "The hell was that?". Well and the fact that the following run we met some super nice Jenova players who were just the best party mates ever so maybe she burned all my bad vibes for a while.

Yep. I've had both situations happen to me before in Dun Scaith and in Rabanastre. Was in the party who had double WHM and our group all died to those ultimates while the other groups who had shields were fine.

Agree to disagree then. Diurnal AST still has Collective Unconscious, and if a tank is a dope about busters, they just need an instant heal (Tetra/Bene/ED/Lustrate) after. If the tanks/DPS are bad and the cohealer is good, there's the option to switch to Noct after a wipe, if shields are really going to save the day. I'm not saying that Noct doesn't have its place, but that WHM + Diurnal doesn't mean the AST is dumb. But as I said, I don't take AST to raids (I don't like the job), so mainly I'm on SCH, not pre-shielding for most busters, unless the tank appears to not use CDs.

My God, sounds terrifying. It seems to me that some tanks have no idea what they are doing or just poorly mimicking what other tanks do.

However, that pull you describe is doable. I know because I do it too when I play tank. You grab all the things from the begining to the end. As a side note: I only do them when I queue up with friends. Although, granted... It looks scary because there are a lot of enemies together. In reality, it's not that bad: the small ones die really quick, leaving the bird (Which deals AoE damage, making it look even scarier), the bear and the 2 statues alive in the end. With that being said, the tank was bad if they think that kitting is an option in this game. It completely f*ks over the DPS, their AoE, their placed AoEs. Specially because you mentioned having a DRG, as they have a line AoE that might miss mobs if they keep moving. Having to chase everything around is infuriating. The best tanking is standing still, positioning the trash in a way they are well packed. Only moving when an AoE happens and then returning to said point afterwards. By the look of it, apparently they also had an extremely poor CD management, specially DRK since they are the dungeon kings.

In conclusion, bad tank. I'm sorry you had to go through it. .-.

I guess you've never seen a tank get one shotted by it. I have and I could do nothing about it because I was on WHM and no shields since Divine Benison isn't available for that level.

I mean if you argue content is so easy that you don't need shields then you could argue the same thing that double regens is not needed either.

I mean if content is so easy you don't need one or the other than why not go for the option that gives you both instead of just one. I don't understand that way of thinking, but I guess yeah agree to disagree.

Well, I mentioned this to the tank and they had the gall to say "stfu scrub*was much worse so I censored*". My thoughts during the rest of the run....

I would have helped you to kick that person. We actually kicked a healer for a response like that. My GF was giving them advice because the WHM was clearly learning. Their response? "Idgaf bruh".

So roulette drops me into Dun Scaith as PLD. By some trick of DF, my alliance consisted of 2 WHMs, 4 BRDs, and a RDM. In fact, all 6 healers for that run were WHMs. This is much less fun than it sounds, when all 6 of those WHMs only seem to know Medica II and use it incessantly.

Anyway, one of my alliance WHMs was new. Apparently this translates into "I don't even know how to use Esuna on Doom". Also apparently, none of the 4 BRDs knew that you can use Warden's Paeon on it as well. I'm glad I didn't MT for the run, because the WHMs spent their time tanking the floor while I threw out what heals I could.

Also annoying: the other WHM's raise macro, which ate up a good chunk of my chatbox every time they spammed it, and which made me want to kick in their teeth by the time we reached Diabolos.

Naturally, though, this led me to be rather wary of OTing anything, since when you have 2 continuously dead healers, you may just follow them yourself. Still, I tried. OTing Connor at Scathach turned out to be easy enough, since the DPS had the good sense to pile on it. I learnt new things about myself, though, at Diabolos Hollow. More specifically, that it is indeed possible to jump into the middle gate with only my alliance's DPS and kill the mob dead, with no healers available.

Just left a strange Titan ex that I got on mentor roulette.

People kept getting knocked off by upheaval, even me, and I wasn't sure why because I usually never see that. Now this would've been simple enough to look up, but I have a dumb brain that can't do words good and kept forgetting the name of the attack I was hit with that knocked me off. But I did tell the tank repeatedly he needs to keep Titan in the same spot, while the tank argued that he doesn't and that the granite gaol's are what's supposed to keep people from falling off. After I did figure out what the attack was and that we need Titan to not be taken on a walk around the arena the tank pulled multiple times before I could phrase it coherently which honestly does take me longer than it would for most people.

I ended up leaving. I'm frustrated that I'm bad at explaining things and that I couldn't help better.

I was two carbon twines away from full 130 gear on my SAM so I hopped on my WHM and queued for MS. CM of course. Tank pulls one group off the light and stops. We pull them and pulls the other light and that's it. At that point I noticed I have more HP than them. Look at their gear. Wearing the AF1 set minus the chest piece. Even with the small pulls the run didn't take any longer then normal. Really top notch DPS. But then before the last boss, one of the tanks pulled half the giants.That was exciting. Anyway after the run, went to Mor Dhona for my twine and there was one of the tanks buying new gear. I thought that was a funny coincidence.

This Medica II obsession that so many WHM's seem to have is baffeling to me. I used to see people say it and assume they were exaggerating but I've finally gotten to do some 24 man content lately and in some of those fights healers often seem to aggregate in one place.

Point is I saw a WHM from another alliance actually chaincasting Medica II. Their tank was the MT as well! Why in the name of all that is Holy (lol Holy joke, so edgy, much cool) must you spam an expensive AoE healing spell when your tank is basically the only one taking damage?

Well, someone actually asked this WHM in Alliance chat about it. Their response? "Wasnt on all party members" ...

......... huh?

Here, this AoE doesn't seem to hit everything... How about now? How about now? Now? How about now? This WHM was basically the FFXIV version of the old Verizon comercial "can you hear me now?" guy. Except they weren't smart enough to move between tests. What did you think carried the HoT to them? Your poor SCH cohealer's fairy or sheer persistance?

I don't know if they're alone in this or what but either way the repeated Medica II's need to die.

I'm usually against RDMs using vercure whenever they have a dualcast up, as that's... wasteful at best, unless your team's healer is struggling.

BUT

If you're in an alliance where everyone and their mom is dying, all healers and tanks down, and boss almost dead - would it KILL you to rezz at least your own team's healers and throw a manashift their way? Last time I was in Rabanaste I was teamed with both a SMN and a RDM, the entire thing was a slaughterhouse, and I was on rez duty all the time while they happily ignored everything going around.

Seriously, why?

You don't have to spend that much time healing, just throw out some rezzes since you have access to them and your entire team is tanking the floor?

Stg, the wipes that could be prevented if people didn't toss all their utility skills off of their hotbars lmao

A huge screw you to the bard as well, not a single refresh the entire bloody run.

After that Dun Scaith run, I went as WAR for 50/60 roulette. Sohr Khai, again with a WHM, then a DRG and SAM.

I... don't think I ever once saw this WHM cast Holy. Or Assize. Their main idea of healing involved stacking Medica II and Regen, then standing around until two mobs were left and maybe throwing out an Aero III.

Thankfully, both the DRG and SAM were good enough at AoEs. I just wasn't willing to deal with any more Medica II WHMs, so I mass-pulled throughout the entire dungeon. WAR is surprisingly fun now that I don't have to juggle stacks anymore.

Also good: WAR's self-healing abilities, since this WHM got themselves killed at the pegasus boss, when they got knocked into the water, and decided casting Medica II was more important than, say, an Esuna, a Tetragrammaton, or a Benediction. Once again, good DPS ensured the boss died before I did as well. Isn't it funny how good DPS can make up for crappy healing or tanking? Yet people dismiss it as unimportant, as a matter of course.

Ha. I had 3 red mages on my party the first time I did it. Only one of them would raise either healer. There was an unfortunate time where my co healer and this helpful red mage died, I had 0 mana and the other 2 healers didn't even bother raising, let alone mana shifting me while popping their mp refresh to solely DPS.

I'm glad you're enjoying WAR though! They're my favorite tanks to heal. Nothing like Holy spamming for a while then filing up 70k HP at once with Benediction.

As for not using Holy I have no clue. It is (IMO) our signature spell, not to mention some of the best trash pull mitigation in the game. Trying to make your job easy on WHM? Holy is like your bestie up there with Regen and Tetra.

I've had plenty of WHM as co-healers who don't bother with Medica II, or at least Regen on the tank. It's always Cure I, Cure II or Cure III, and 0 DPS.

Sad thing is I'm always scared to try and give them some tips that would help them and the party, because I've had some either STFU me, leave, or tell me I'm some elitist and shit.

Had a SMN in OS3 practice party today who refused to accept a raise if they died after someone else's mistake... Also never raised anyone and didn't use LB3 to get the group through a bad situation because "it shouldn't be needed". They started to accept the raises after I (the WHM) said that if they stop doing DPS after someone else makes a mistake, I should do the same with healing. It was an awful party in so many ways (mostly because of the really horrible attitudes) and I was really happy it disbanded fast. 2 people went directly on my blacklist (and I almost never blacklist anyone).

For my part, when I'm on WHM I try to let the tank get hate before healing and especially before using Regen, but sometimes they will keep pulling and pulling and their health is under 30% and they keep going for more... so yeah, I cast a Cure or Cure 2 to keep them from wiping. If they are decent they immediately grab the hate from the mobs I've triggered, if not, well, fun times. As for the oft cursed Medica 2, I try to use it if the party is regularly suffering from frequent AoE or takes a massive hit from a single AoE. Otherwise if it's just a moderate AoE blast here and there I use Medica 1 as needed and move on. As for healer DPS, well, that depends. If I can't keep the tank up without constant heals or a DPS keeps running into the fire, sorry, you might only get an Aero or Stone here and there if my attempt at Holy spam is going to cause a wipe.

Well, I've been absent a while and decided to jump back in yesterday to get my i289 healer jobs some practice and move up the gear chain. DF is so unpredictable, though. And I've been in a whopping 367 instanced dungeons, raids, or trials so far spread out unevenly over a year and half, so sometimes I mix up bosses, etc. Thus I am always open to constructive advice. Yet as documented in this thread, who knows what kind of expectations people will bring, along with a good chance of passive-aggressiveness. So who knows what will happen...

As for yesterday in DF...

It was great!

The 50/60 was Sastasha Hard I think, where the scorpion boss tosses DoTs and also drops a random player to 1 hp. That was rough because I panicked and forgot where Esuna was on my bar. The other three people were friends who had queued together and they took my blunder in stride, mentioning some of their own dungeon goofs. They liked that I admitted I was rusty but still willing to try double pulls. It was a good run. Next was leveling featuring the Aerie and a tank new to the dungeon. Went fine. Another run where everyone was in a good mood and willing to help teach. Only issue was that two people didn't know to run to Estenien's magic bubble until it was too late. Second try was no problem. In trials roulette a simple run of Infrit hard. Even tried the new raid roulette (I don't raid, I only had Labyrinth and Syrcus unlocked, each done once in spring 2016, as well as Fist of the Father that I've never tried). Got Syrcus, smooth as silk.

So, hoping for another good DF day today. Wish me luck :)
