Yes, I would. In fact I was planning on it.
Yes, I would. In fact I was planning on it.
As for my character (Aviha Chai) her birth name is probably Chachai Chai. But I'm not gonna change it in-game.
I might have to change my name a bit. This Miqo'te has an Elezen name! Though I'm not too fond of sun naming conventions. The dark side compels me!
I am changing my name for sure but it won't really follow the lore ^^; I love the lore stuff though!!
After 2 years I'm too attached to my name, many times I had to argue with other players because my name was stupid (or because it was stupid to role play a character... oh well for those guys it was stupid even watch cut scenes or read dialogues) and btw I still have my summerfest wallpapers with my miqo'te in swimsuit and her shiny name (and old server)... I feel sad :( Kira is also the name of my older cat in RL so I can't change it, I just used an "h" to give it a more mithra/miqo'tish look. My immersion is ruined! (you can add the meme I'm too sad now...)
Llen hit it right on the mark... coming up with katakana/hiragana for it really isn't that hard...
As far as apostrophes go, I don't think they've gone overboard with it, as it becomes a trait of the miqo'te. The other races don't typically use it. Sure it's used to evoke foreignness and unfamiliarity, but what exactly is wrong with that? It would hardly be unique to the Japanese either, this is a common technique in English literature as well... There's also nothing saying apostrophes have to be used only as they are in English and its related languages. They're often used to indicate contractions or glottal stops, but their function is not limited to this.
As far as translation origin, they most definitely did not start with katakana. Fernhalwes specifically stated previously that the naming conventions had to be translated into Japanese, not from it.
Luckily for me my name actually fits the naming convention for Hyur midlanders fairly well.
Oh, and I would appreciate it if you used your real name-there's a special place in the seventh hell for those who use "amusing" aliases. ;)
If I get the option, I'm changing my name to Totomojo Papamojo as my friends call me Mojo anyhow. Though if we can change race, I'm prolly gonna go Roegadyn anyway.
I'm hoping for a race-change to be justified by lore, ie Hydaelyn has stored you as a memory (or 'echo' if you will) and reincarnates you as the being who you feel you are... or something... (convincing your retainers that you're the same person and you want your stuff might be entertaining though).
I'm considering it because i'm at odds with wether or not my name fits the conventions and part of me hates that. But i have no idea what to. Maybe something silly like Mwoho Hihiho Mwoh-ho hee-hee-ho =P i really don't know. edit: i don't think that even fits the convention! lol....
You're right, in this day and age there is no way a multinational game company has any clue what they're doing with foreign languages. I have a great idea. Let's not put any effort into the game's worldbuilding. Will that make you happy?
1) I never said anything about katakana specifically. I said kana, which includes both sets.Quote:
I doubt they created the words initially from katakanas as they are used to emulate pronounciation only and if you can find me a combination of hiraganas that would fit: "A’zumyn Bhen", then i'll give you a baggie of catnip from my own private stash. Keep in mind that this is mostly a hunch of mine. Speculation at best.
2) You sound like you're saying hiragana aren't used to spell words according to pronunciation, which is false.
あずみぃん べん
あずみん べん
あじゅみん べん
あじゅみぃん べん
There, hiragana that fits A’zumyn Bhen. Possible katakana versions have alread been provided.
The ・ dot is commonly used to denote a break in katakana words such as a space, since Japanese doesn't use spaces like English does.
The other thing you'll notice about the writing of the names in Japanes is that in the example of Y'shtola, the first character is actually read as "ya" without any tricks or special explanation (compared to the Y' in English rendition needing a pronunciation guide). The ・ dot serves the same purpose as the apostrophe, that is separating the characters, but it's not the same thing and it doesn't confuse the pronunciation anywhere near the same way an apostrophe can in English.
By the way, all the clan prefix sounds listed can be written with one, maybe two, kana. That is to say, it is more likely that we're seeing some creatively localized naming conventions based on some stylistic writing choices and phonetic name design that completely escaped Japanese writing systems entierly, because with kana, things sound the way you write them
(and vise versa) far more consistently than in Western languages using the Latin alphabet.
T'Ymora is ok...but the last name doesn't fit at all....sheesh
I would've given you a baggie of catnip as reward for the hiraganas (credit where its due), but i'm keeping it thanks to the angry and derogatory tone. I think you confused my speculation (clearly specified) over SE's use of apostrophe for a personal attack to you or the game.
I personally do not like their use of the apostrophe (neither did i in XI) and would not use it for my char's name even if i could. Mah catnip. None for j00!
If there's no apostrophes allowed in new names, then I'll probably leave my name as-is, and if I needed some lame excuse then I'd just say I was adopted and raised by Hyurs or something. If apostrophes are allowed, then I'm debating ways of changing my name.
Historically, I'm attached to chromatic names, and would like to preserve that in a new name. I'm less attached to the surname I chose, but would probably try to pick something phonetically inspired by it, though truncated to one or two kana's worth
X'Pia Ihno (シ・ピア イノ, Shee-pea-ah Ee-noh) sounds promising to me.
No, I interpreted your original outburst as unnecessary and whiny. Not a personal attack.
Well, that's fine of course. I don't think anyone should feel forced to adhere to naming conventions, and that includes apostrophes.Quote:

I'm already looking into how I want to tweak my name to fit with naming conventions. :]
I tend to give my characters ridiculous names that I later regret
I may finally have learnt my lesson this time...
Like others I am torn on changing my name or not. I don't rp but I tend to follow naming conventions in games if they have them. "Naria" is my default name though and one that I carried over from XI. (Maybe Naria's parents thought they were having a son?) "Starcatcher" is a literary reference that I ended up choosing because I could not choose Seraph since the server merger had already happened but for some reason all of the seraph character names were still blocked out. I like my name though, and I have occasionally gotten random tells in game complementing me on it.
My character's given name could easily be changed to "Nhari" since most the time that's how people address me anyways, but I don't have a clue on what to do for the last name. Mithra/Miq'ote names always seemed to have too many consonants.
Heh, mine pretty much fits already. I'm good.
For anyone else who is stuck for female Highlander second names, I suggest having a read of a list of ancient combat weapons. It really helped me!
I was kinda worried that sense 'a indicates a son that female names would not normally end in a, but a second look at the name thread (when I'm not trying to get ready for work, eat and read simultaneously) disproves that.:o
Unless we get naming conventions for Keeper surnames I'll probably just keep "Starcatcher". Perhaps my kitty had particularly high ambitions when starting her adventuring life. :)
Although that would make it awkward if she ever did have a son having Naria and Naria'a in the same family. Huh, somehow I think that Keeper males tend to end up going by nicknames.
I'll be changing to a male Keeper of the Moon, but I'm not keen on using the naming conventions, so here is the backstory I've come up with:
Most people might think that in a society so female-heavy, being the man is really the life. But if that guy in a keeper-sized family is gay, things can get depressing. The chances of having someone that you can click with are exceedingly remote.
So after reaching a certain way into adulthood, he finally makes the call and buggers off, leaving his culture and his mother's name behind, instead adopting a name inspired by a roegadyn he once met.
It is during his trip to Ul'dah that he finally finds a boyfriend, but back in the city of Gridania where he truly finds his professional calling. Neither place gives him a desire to look back to his Keeper family from the outskirts of the East Shroud.
Tee hee, how adorable! http://www.cute-factor.com/images/sm.../beautifu2.gif
Maybe one day Hestie Nestie will find a lover boy, too. ;)
I completely support this backstory. In fact, I approve it. I gay approve it.

I think I came up with a backstory, for my character in case I change race and want to keep my current char name. . . .
His adopted Huyr Midlander parents found him as a lost cub in the bushes in the Black Shround while on their way to the Lifemend Stump. Since he was raised to love and respect nature, he was given a druidic Hyur name "Nuinn". His last name isn't the same as of his adopted parents, though. As a small child (kitty?), he often used to wonder about his biological parents, and could often be seen pulling on the merchants' robes around Gridania and asking them "Do you know me?" At the age of 3, he still couldn't speak very well so it sounded more like "Do you nomi?" which soon became sort of a nickname to him. The Nomi child.
CUUUUUUUUUUTE!
These sun seeker kittens don't follow the racial conventions:

Senah Chalahko

Doyoh Lihzeh

Rhela Nbolo

:P
Those are all mooncat names, and there's a couple of suncat names in the mooncat list as well. What I imagine happened is that the character model was tinkered with later, after the character had already been placed. There's a Lalafell with the same situation: http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Keketo Since she's plainsfolk, the name should be Ketoto or maybe Tokeke.
If you wanted to keep them "canon" without either changing their name or their model, probably they were raised by nonbiological parents.
But in that case the name will be Hira and anyway nurhiyo will be too long for a male cat. I could agree and change my name for racial convenctions but the only name that sound good for me is O'khira Nurhyo... but the mole tribe? Come on moles? Dodos? Eorzea lacks of aggressive fauna? Y'shtola of the jaguars, O'khira of the moles!?!?!?!?! No way!
Funny thing is that my Hyur's name is already from a certain branch of the Celtic languages and I named her years ago. Conveniently conventioned :)
I love how this forum brought out the long time forum lurkers to post ^ ^ Welcome, welcome:D
I'm a voyeur-- eh lurker all right :D Thanks~!
Sometimes a thread is worth replying to.
I'd like to, but N'aivir looks kind of weird
I suppose sticking to the lore rules I could rename my character Smokito dorito
