Your assumptions about how hard it is to know people in multiple time zones is incorrect. It's as easy/hard as it is to know people on a single time zone. Sure I knew less people who were "on at the same time" but I had a handfull of people or shells to turn to at any givin situation. I know a few people in my situation such as Army personell and they rarely had issues on XI either.
It could be because Odin was so populated it had to be closed off, but it was a tight knit community at all hours of the day. You had as much JP onry ass-hatery as you did NA players being jerks to JP's as well, it's not a single nationality or group of players that are assholes it's just not as apparent when you can "Tollerate" a person being a jack-ass in english when a person being a douche in a different language is a bit more frustrating.

Also it wasn't just Odin I made a server transfer to Pheonix in my later years of XI and still had few isues finding people to play with.
On the vien of you "I played WoW and Mapplestory and there were "Plenty" of people online at oddball hours" I can guarantee you that "Plenty" of people is a far cry from the thousand or so people I could find online in XI at any givin time of day.
Just because you apparantly can't find a way to play with players from different regions of the world doesn't mean we all do. (I again strongly remind you I speak very little Japanese and I played with German, Korean, and players from other nationalities as well) and maintained good relations with many of them after I left XI. -

This is really sad day for FFXIV. Now currently the EU players have a EU only server and once prime times over guess what, players that are on cant get much done. Now this will happen with a NA server as well once prime times over guess what, you wont get anything done. With a global community you can login at anytime and get things done and thats because there are multiple prime times. In my honest opinion yoshi is gonna end up killing FFXIV with the direction he is taking this game. I will give it 1 year after 2.0 launches unless he changes his course now.

I assume you have low playtime so you want wow-type content which only takes about 1-2hrs/week/character to complete, then all these people you see sitting around in town, are doing just that, that crap kinda works in wow because it forces you to constantly make new characters and replay the same content (which is the only way you can physically play relevant content "all day")
FF11 had tones of content that could be played around the clock, it never ended, my ls had NA/EU/JP divisions (generally 50-60members), events never stopped, if you logged on at 2am, you had a group, 4pm, had a group, 9pm, had a group.
Its amazing that some really dont think regional servers will segregate the population (i really dont think they believe this, they are just playing dumb because they personally have low play time, and if all servers have an average prime time of about 3hrs, content will reflect it just like in wow, every character only takes about 1-2hrs of actually play time every week to win the current raids) but when new people join the game, and they see:
NA
NA
EU
EU
JP
JP
as server list, where would you go if you lived in NA? Obviously not where NA people are. ~HERPDERP
"New" people to the game will 99% of the time pick the server that is set for their area, it will happen, and im fairly sure you know this, and because of this, if a NA ls went to say an EU server, over time the ls would prob die unless no one in the ls every quits... ever. There simply will not be enough people in that time zone after a fairly short amount of time. Not saying 0 NA's will ever go to an EU server or something, but the only reason would be if thier play time called for it, which would also be based around EU prime time (as new players), and the chances of them being "endgame worthy" is kinda low to start with considering such a small amount of NA's even do endgame. -

That's perfectly fine, but I don't see why this means you don't see how they effect the game even if your not playing with them.
Having players on 24/7 on a server (In large numbers not a handfull of night-owls) helps drive the server community with better supply and demand of items. I still think people are blaming things like Ifrit lag far too much on the latency and not enough on the current servers themselves.
Japanese players have issues with plumes and such as well, Yoshida has even mentioned it multiple times. You really are gaining a insignificant ammount of latency in terms of how even the new pace of combat flows. Hell XI was pretty touchy on positioning and timing as well and not a whole lot of people screamed bloody murder about server latency in it.
Christ I've outclaimed Japanese players even with my apparant handicap (Some of the best NM hunters I knew in XI were EU the apparant children with the worst latency of all)
The current game relies too much on Server side checks and it's the reason we have the current input lag today. As long as SE moves alot of the checks client side we could be much like XI with a insignificant delay. I can see where the hardcore PVPers might want latency issues checked but for PVE? Hell we will still get the lag because your going to be using Content finder.
Unless Content finder wont allow you to connect to other "Data centers" Then you really are segregating the servers. -

The servers are labled as NA/EU/JP, read back atleast a page or something, new players comming to the game will, 99% of the time will, pick the server based on the region they live in, most of the games on the market atm are all region locked and its what people are used to but a large amount of people only played ff11/14 because it was world-wide servers.
The fact that they allow us to pick what servers we want to be on reguardless of where they are does not make them world servers if nearly the entire population on every server is from that region. Any decent endgame or even a medium sized social would be very hard to maintain if not impossible so none would go. -

In the end, its all about the server label. All people are asking for is a few extra JP servers with "World Server" as the label. Something as simple as a label will decide who goes to it, esp from new players. Nearly my ls's entire EU division is confused on what to do, they 100% do not want to go to a EU server, but a NA server will have a flat prime time, it will happen, it happens in all region based games and they do not want to stay up til 3-4am every day to make NA events only.
The fact that this seems to bother so many of you makes no sense, keep the dumb regional servers, but we should get what we want to, world servers are far more stable in the end and allow for prime times basically around the clock, none of this would affect you, in any way. -

It will be exactly the same.
Ragnarok was labelled "Europe" and there are players from America and Japan as well.
Back then discussions were the same. The result will be the same here.
Some people care about latency, some don't, the latter will choose whatever server they fancy to. Some will go for the name of the server, some because they managed to speak with their friends and decide, some will choose latency. Many case, people are different and it's silly to think that everyone will think like you.
So let time and diversity do the trick. -

Honestly I would have been happier if they'd left it to a basic server transfer, and didn't give us the data centers. Right now I don't know whether the new concept is better or worse, but I do know that it's throwing everyone for a loop. Think I'll just go back to looking at gameplay info, and cross the server-related bridge when I come to it.

First - new players are NOT part of your community. If they choose another server, you won't miss them or anything, for the simple reason that you will never KNOW them.
Second, if your community really is as close-knit as you think it is it will stay together no matter what SE throws at them.
Fact is though, that the community only FEELS so close but eventually many people won't give a sh*t on staying together and just leave for a server which fits their location/timezone/etc. better meaning it was never so close-knit as you thought it was anyways.

I've played many games which were region-locked (and that's not even what SE is doing) and you could log in at 3 am or 8 in the morning and there were people to play with. It's because (not really surprisingly) you are NOT the only person on earth playing at oddball hours. For various reasons people will choose to play on any kind of server they like, just like we have people from all over the world on Ragnarok (some came because the timezone fits their playing time, others because they wanted to stay with their friends or because they expected it to be most 'international' which actually came true).
You can't see into the future, but based on experiences from other games and from playing on Ragnarok (even though it's low-populated) I can say that regional servers IMPROVE the gaming experience.
Especially if they also reduce lag... -
