PLD Gear?

Noone said anything ever about aegis boon. What does this have to do with it? Both stats have access to it and it's always 703. If you use Aegis Boon while Divine Veil is up you're not being efficient. If you need HP you should cure during that time because you can't be interrupted. Quit bringing up random shit that has nothing to do with the testing because you're wrong.

Apparently maturity is something PLDs in this thread are really lacking. Maybe you all should stack that on your body piece instead. Stufoo and Molly, you're behaving worse than Ace and Grey. Just to clarify, because against high Dlvl, Block Rate is super low, the above was calculated with only Divine Veil, so 100% Block for 20 seconds out of 1 minute.

Lol this thread, leave Molly and Ace be, if their choice works for them, it works. I am with Stufoo and Grey on this, i also thinks its not optimal if you wants to beat difficult stuff Garuda or 17min raids. But, i am not here to tell you are wrong, because time will tell when you keep trying and unable to pull them off, but i respect your opinion on this matter except the part where two of you calling people nolifers for beating a content takes 17min to do. There are multiple ways to achieve the same goal. One needs to try out different gear sets and see how each one works for them. If a certain set works for you while it seems overwhelmingly disregarded by others, then go ahead and use it. There's no real point in others calling that set dumb if it works for prevailing in content. Try out what others suggest and test it. That should help you recognize what set best works for how you tank.

You're right, 10 vit = 1% dmg mitigated from a shield block. If you take 1000 damage, you reduce your damage by 10 damage. So your +1 vit rings = 36 vit = 3.6% dmg mitigation.

So when it comes to comparing, your 11 defense vs 45 emnity 34 hp +5 regen per tick and 13 vit, you can lose 32 mind but as I said it can be made up with rings.

I wont laugh at your set and say it's useless because it is not, what I'm trying to say is, that all these items that take a long time to gain, stacked together are worth the trouble because together they cover alot more areas of hate, accuracy and damage mitigation, mp managment and damage in one go as opposed to just stacking damage mitigation. They have similar damage mitigation BUT you get all those bonuses on top.

You should only stack VIT as a PLD if you're trying to survive running through trash mobs (like say, AV).

Otherwise, HP, MND, Accuracy, and STR.

I already showed you a 3/3 Heavy Darklight build with more defense and more vitality than your materia stacked gear. It also has 500 more HP and 200 more enmity. Anyway my PLD is built around ENM/ACC/STR/MND for as much hate as possible because you will not have much time to build it against bosses you care about; you will be dodging as much as possible.

On trash mobs, you would be better to stack Dex (Block Rate) and wear a high Block Rate Shield.
It would be better to block 36% of damage 87% of the time, than 50% of damage 42% of the time.

(Divine Veil @ 100% Block Rate + 75% Block Rate VS. Divine Veil @ 100% Block Rate + 30% Block Rate)

But for your example - AV or CC where your DV timer comes off between rooms and the mob levels are still high you are correct to stack VIT for Block and rely on the 20 second timer for DV

This thread is gold. Regardless, the only thing I have to add is the recommendation of the Militia gorget. The few who posted the raw stats and know what's up. I salute you. You know who you are.

With regards to the Militia Gorget, I am of the opinion that it is a tad bit overrated. I had one and tried it out in various situations but ending up selling it. The reason being that I prefer the +15 accuracy and crit hit + the explorer's offers or even the attack the electrum +1 offers. This is personal preference of course but I prefer to hit hard and hit accurately, doubly so on Warrior. Even with 2 minute Miser kills, the militia gorget didn't make or break the fight with regards to Miser turning.

Enmity is an important stat and that 3% may raise the parties DPS ceiling a wee bit, but for me I just simply prefer what the explorer's or the electrum offers. Again, this is personal preference. I look at each battle differently and gear accordingly. But I have never yet encountered a situation where the militia gorget made or broke any of our runs. So basically if you need some enmity help, get it but if you don't notice too much of a difference, sell it and enjoy your 10-15 million.

Also just to follow up on the lominsan overcoat; That thing is boss. It covers all a paladins needs with an extra 70 defense with sanction enabled (220 Defence.) Another bonus is the Lominsan weapons offering inherent accuracy when compared to the Moogle weapons. Honestly, if you are a career tank starting out, the Maelstrom offers the best tanking gear hands down.

It might take 17 mins if you've spent the time to memorize every aspect of the dungeon. I guarantee nobody has ever walked into AV on their first try with party members who are no more familiar with it than knowing where the af is, and complete a 17 min speed run. Anyone who's done a 17 min run has had plenty of practice on it first, or went in there with 7 other people who have. I, and the people I usually play with have not spent the time learning that dungeon. Now, you can continue calling a lack of experience a lack of ability, but two are definitely not the same.

Hey Judge, just wanted to clarify on this and how strange your block rate difference estimates are. The logic is sound if there weren't abilities such as sentinel, divine veil, and other mitigators that completely trump the incentive to mitigate trash pulls in the first place. Like, of course you want to block more, but the difference isn't large enough to care. The logic just doesn't fit into the game's situations, but for clarification, you can't make this large of an improvement on block rate in the game at all.

For a Holy Shield 110 block rate + standard HDL 206 dex build to have a 30% block rate, the floor for that monster would have to be -12.6%. I don't think this is likely to happen on "trash monsters" but I have no idea, let's roll with it.

Floor + (Block Rate x (.2)) + (DEX x (.1)) = block rate ≤ 75%

so

30% - (110x(.2)) - (206x(.1)) = -12.6% floor

Likewise, considering you were talking about the same scenario when comparing (trash monsters, standard vs. high block rate + dex stack), let's see how much you'd need to reach 75% standard block rate on a -12.6% floor.

The increase from -12.6% to 75% is 87.6%, so you'd need around 438 block rate, or 876 dex, or some combination of the two. As you can see the numbers for this increase are just unreachable in any sense. Realistically, you could have... 196 maximum possible block rate from gear and traits. You'd still need 484 dex total.

I want to put up the math for the block power differences too, but it's pretty safe to say that to gain that 45% block rate, you'd be giving up 43~45% mitigation in block as well in the shield alone, not 14% as in your example. So basically, there's a reason we use Kite and Tower shields. Our abilities override the need for block rate. Nothing overrides the need for block power.

A more reasonable comparison would be Holy shield 110 vs. Gridanian Buckler 178. In the above example, simple switching to the gridanian buckler alone would net you a +13.6% increase in block rate (30->43.6). However, you are trading +13.6% block rate for -13.4% mitigation (Holy shield +27.6% -> Gridanian Buckler +14.2%). Numbers like these are just too small to care about for trash monsters in the game's current scenarios and ability design (divine veil).

Comparing individual things like HDL gauntlets vs. Sentinel's Gauntlets shows a clear winner (12 VIT = 6 Block Power = 1.2% mitigation vs. 5 Block Rate = 1.0% block rate), then when you meld DEX onto the sentinel's gauntlets you are just trading block rate for defense, and non-mitigation stats like HP, Enmity, and Mind, for very, very little gain.

While the tone of the discussion leaves a lot to be desired, what's being discussed holds value. If I'm going to invest boatloads of gil and time to get a nice triple melded (or more) chest piece, I want to ensure I'm spending my gil in the most efficient way possible.

I can post my theory of what I think is best, and if I'm wrong somebody that has a better handle on the math involved and the testing methods used can correct it and tell me why. That being said, I have a few questions for you all, since you've changed my mind on DEF. Is there a cap to VIT in terms of it's effect on DEF, m.DEF, and enhancing magic potency? If not, would you just stack VIT only on a triple melded cobalt cuirass for PLD? Or would you stack VIT to a certain point, then add something else? If there is a cap, what would an ideal triple melded cobalt cuirass have on it, if I were to use a tier II, a tier III and a tier IV materia for my meld?

No cap, if there is, it is unreachable. There is a damage floor though, but this is not the same thing as a VIT or DEF cap as it is relative. There is a cap on enhancing magic potency's benefit to each spell, but those are too high to worry about as well, and admittedly the very worst reason to use vitality in the first place. Block Power is the far more beneficial gain from VIT. There's a cap on block power mitigation too, 75%, but that's unattainable on bosses too.

Basically get as much VIT as possible, but don't go overboard because you'll replace it with heavy darklight's more varied benefits or a differently focused body piece anyway.

IMO you can't recommend DL or HDL gear, because it can't be bought and the drop rate is atrocious. Not everyone has the time to dedicate to farming DL or HDL. For most of us that gear is something we'll get if we're lucky, it's not an inevitability. It might be, if we all had 18 hours a day to dedicate to farming it, but that's not the case. Until something changes with the drop rate, any discussion about gear, is a conversation about how to gear your char sans DL and HDL.

I agree that my block rate estimates were a bit high @ 75%

A better comparison (in my case) would be like:
Max 60% Block rate on lvl 52 Mobs, with a Block Value of around 35% (Gridanian Buckler)(Garuda's Gaze)(300 Dex)
Max 32% Block rate on lvl 52 Mobs, with a Block Value of around 55% (Holy Shield)(350 VIT)

With the limited gains on Block Rate and Block. It almost seems like it's useless to add it anywhere you could put accuracy, damage or enmity.

Incorrect. When you have discussions about gear, you put them in order of best to worse in terms of situations. You cannot simply decide to discount gear because YOU cannot personally attain it. With your logic, you would have to also leave out gear people cannot afford because of materia prices or whatever. That is just totally ridiculous.

Of course one could argue that in the terms of the inexperienced and newer player such things like HDL and Garuda weapons would be completely out of the question, but in either case all options should be mentioned rather than the best or most available.

The militia gorget is probably one of the best neck pieces you can get if somehow you can get your str/mnd/acc caps and not have to worry about getting one of those stats through another piece of jewelery. However, I'm pretty sure that's only feasible with triple melded+ gear, if at all.

That said, I actually use the Militia Gorget specifically for hamlet before the NM pops. With every piece of enmity available to me I can pull shit off the crafter/gatherer's with one voke and flash.

It's not that I can't obtain it, its that you either have to be really lucky or do nothing but AV/CC for weeks or months on end to be guaranteed to get it. My point is, we all know it's the best armor. That being the case, this thread should have ended at the second post and that post should have said got get dark light gear, because that's all there is. Being that the driop rate is so horrendous we need to know what's best, without darklight gear.

It's the same thing in the weapons threads, Garuda weapons are the best, but you don't see people say hey go get a garuda weapon, as if they drop from the sky. (Well they sorta do, but that's not the point.) No, people reccommend the LT weapons first because they are easier to obtain. We all know that prior to a relic, a garuda weapon is the best thing there is, but you can't exactly just get into a simple pug group and go get one.

Well Garuda's Gaze ain't all that great compared to the Maelstrom/Adders weapons (or even Mogblade, really). The others are mostly fine. Besides that, Garuda weapons are some of the only drops in the game you can ACTUALLY count on. She always drops 2 tokens on a quick win (which you'll most likely get since long Garuda is usually a wipe) and isn't really all that tough to kill.

Really I don't think suggesting drops is that unreasonable. Pickup groups are more than capable of Garuda as long as they aren't the kind of guys who wipe to stuff like skirmish.

Ideally, the gear set I want to have someday is: With all my points in STR and MND (228 and 234)

HQ Cobalt Celata (51 MND)
Darklight Cuirass
Darklight Gauntlets
Darklight Sollerets
HQ Felt Trousers (25 STR/27 VIT)

2 X HQ Rubelite Rings
White Ravens
HQ Raptorskin Bracelet

(I could also use the Storm Earring, Belt and Bracelet for a bit more attack and Str (3 piece bonus)

DL Gear (storm bonus) - STR 330, VIT 322, MND 287, **ATK 564

Food for Accuracy or extra ATK/STR Smoked Raptor, Tuna Mac'bob

Darklight Gauntlets can be swapped for 40+ STR Gloves, but the VIT is nice, and 50 ATK is decent.
(If I ever get a pair of 50+ STR Gauntlets they will be going on, but the Darklight sill gets more badassery points)

The stat Caps on Curtana is around STR 368 - MND 320 (Low DPS value @ 41.03)

Wouldn't that leave you with only like 314 str? Curtana's got to cap higher than that. You've got other triples on there, might as well go for triple Str gauntlets over Darklight. Hell, if you wanted to keep your belt you could use the Maelstrom Shield/Earring/Bracelet. You'd probably have to switch out those Rubelite for Electrum on some fights (like Curtana/2xHQ Electrum/Militia gets me only ~95% accuracy on Nael/Ifrit, would be lower on Garuda) so having more str options would be good if that's your focus.

I'd have to agree there, I think there was an ongoing discussion on the MNK forums that the caps for Relic are roughly 380/330 so you have to really push it to make the caps.

But on the other hand if he insists on using the DL gauntlets, rather than swapping out his HQ STR rings he could also swap to the Lominsan Officers Gloves which give +50 Acc with Sanction so he'd at least get the better of both worlds.
