That's EXACTLY what the filter is there for. To filter out stuff you don't want to see. It's no different to a black list or anything else.
I could filter out vegans if wanted to because I love a good steak.
I'm just never impressed by someone acting tough as they anticipate the support of the vast majority to attack a vulnerable group.
There was a situation IRL where this guy was following around a small probably gay man calling him the f-slur. I stopped him and told him if he wants to fight someone he can fight me. He walked away.
I don't think people need to actively support things outside their value system, but being antagonistic, being "proudly intolerant" is shameful. That person can go f-off.
Man I'm glad my (and that other person)'s posts spawned this thread. Better reaction than I ever could have hoped for.
Why do some people always try to push their personal agenda into a freaking game. It's getting tiring. I was not planning on muting specific words, but I can understand why people choose to block and mute anything related to Lgbtqia+.
for 1 its not even new, I mean most comics had peoples agendas in things such as war, Almost everything in this world has agened put into it, Why are people acting like its new its been like that well longer than most people alive have been alive lol.
The only difference is now is the topic of it lol, lets be honest you dont care about a personal agenda being pushed into things you just care if it doesnt match your own
there is a difference between finesse and subtlety versus just shoving the message down someones throat, old comics and story's explored topical issues via a new light versus now days its just to blatant and quite frankly annoying. your gender identity and sexuality is not a personality.
not to mention most comics stuff was a case of reading in to things that were not there, for instance people hail the xmen for being a reflection of the cival rights movement, yet the creator had no intention of that and is on record saying it was not ever meant to be that.
I mean i dont disagree with that just saying lets not pretend its new :) Beside people don't want you to have a personality in game anyways because when you do people think your delulu or something like they do with me t.t
seems to me people dont want their to be anything but droneness going from point a to point b do your raid repeat like robots regardless of what ppl do
I mean idc I do as i please personally and if people dont like it they can go to hell :) people say they want personality but when they get it they cant handle it
Maaaan, do I have mixed feelings.
One one hand, I understand exactly how you feel OP. But as a friend of mine taught me when I walked out of the proverbial closet, you eventually have to get used to the fact that bigots won't have their mind changed, even if the only thing you're requesting is to be allowed to live just the same way anyone else is. I have pretty thin skin, and I happen to be quite proud of that, but you need to learn to ignore these voices if they offer nothing of value to you (believe me, they're doing the same with our voices).
As for some wanting to blacklist words like LBGT or whatever, well... I happen to hold the opinion that whatever goes inside one's head should be sacred, even if I'd consider it a barbarity personally. If one wants to hold hatred in the heart and that's their way of life, who am I, who are you, to deny them that?
While it probably won't happen in my lifetime, I just want things to advance to the point where people don't feel the need to advertise a particular orientation or identify with a particular group in every other statement, and instead are simply content with being unique individuals who don't fit neatly within any specific box.
100% agree with you, thats how i live my life every day, but find it poignant to quote:
"For the world of man to mean anything, man must own the world. To this end, he hath fought ever to raise himself through conflict--to grow rich through conquest. And when the dust of battle settles, is it ever the strong who dictate the fate of the weak.
Knowing this, but a single path is open to the impotent ruler--that of false worship. A path which leads to enervation and death. Only a man of power can rightly steer the course of civilization. And in this land of creeping mendacity, that one truth will prove its salvation."
the weak need the strong to justify their insecurities.
I used to feel and believe the same way - until I developed a bit of personal empathy and lived a few experiences of my own. I get how you'd look at it that way, but more often than not it's just a way for minority groups to know that whatever place is being advertised is a safe-space.
Mind you, probably not that big of a necessity in this game, but I totally get why.
I'm twelve and this is deep
Didn't know I could filter chat. Great idea; thanks, OP!
Hmph! How very glib.
I find the only ones that generally need a safe space are the ones that demand that they not be treated like everyone else because they are "x"..
if you spend your life hiding from the world then the world will never care if you were there to begin with, same that if you spend you life telling everyone else they are wrong for their own feelings then you will be ignored.
people are sick of those that use their identity as a badge of honor to lord over others like they deserve to be held high on a pedestal for all to see. like anyone else cares...
We have chat filters? I wasn't aware of that. If true thank god. Maybe I don't need to see all the RP and venue shouts now.
Guys, it's just TitanMen baiting on lgbt issues again. That's his normal MO lol.
You live your life how you want to. I don't want to hear about it. So, now that I know that this is a feature. Filtering this nonsense out is going to be the very first thing I do next time I log in.
Yeah i don't know what the big deal is. I have not ever once in my 8 years of playing seen someone say LGBT in say/shout/novice network. i've only seen it used in toxic spam invite FC macros, or erp venue recruitment.
This topics probly just a titanmen bait thread, or something lol
I'm gay And I'm thinking of blocking it too.
Yup search "term filter" in the patch notes. The way the feature works makes it clear it's intended for blocking a large amount of messages where the blacklist or mutelist would be inconvenient to use, such as spam, ads and RMT. One can choose to filter up to 10 words in public channels, emotes and/or tells.
It seems to me like the /tell RMT spam is not as bad as it once used to be so one could also leave tells unblocked in case any friend decides to use words like "gil" or "club" in regular conversation.
You seem to be under the mistaken impression the filter makes characters vanish. NO, that is the blacklist that does that. Filtering a word removes SPAM from the shout an say chat. And the LGBT RP community is one of the main sources for venue/club RP shouts. How are you going to personally know if someone blocks the letters LBGT or LBGT+? This isn't making a character go invisible, its making a shout spam vanish from the chat log.
Ok, well that makes it sound like I lack empathy. :p
I look at it this way: if everyone went around constantly inserting their orientation and the groups they relate to in every other statement then conversations would get annoyingly inefficient and tiring almost immediately. It's unnecessary. You're a human, I'm a human, it doesn't require a biography; let's move on to the actual material that matters, like where we're going for lunch today.
I'm gay IRL and I just don't want venue and FC ads. You won't even know someone is using the filter anyway so it's not censorship really it's more like an ad block.
People like you are the reason why many are going to filter certain terms such as that one. The seek for constant, unwavering attention is repulsive, and people aren't afraid of speaking up against it anymore. Every single time someone disagrees with a snowflake who thinks they're owed whatever they want, is immediately met with insults; just take a look at the title of the thread. I'm going to filter as many of you snowflakes as I possibly can, I'm not going to tolerate being called stuff I'm not - I couldn't care less who you sleep with, unlike you.
There's one simple solution: Accept that two seemingly different truths can very well co-exist peacefully at the same time.
I can be gay, I've had the pleasure and privilege of growing up with a gay couple in my family, so to me it's just as normal as any other sexuality/gender identity and at the same time, I can be against any and all political agenda being shoved down my throat in modern media as well as the forced inclusion that companies and industries only profit from money-wise and reputation-wise not because all of them are good people at heart with the best of intentions in mind.
I can have a preference for androgynous characters in real life and crossdressing activities in private rooms and, yet again, at the same time, I can be against people wearing maid dresses and other obviously (not subtly) hyper fetishized/sexualized clothing in an MMO because it breaks my immersion and I, for one, want to be able to take the story and my character seriously, not turning everything and everyone in a walking meme and/or a constant futile discussion about what's right and wrong, what's left and right.
Guess what, I want to escape realism and dive into a fantasy a world, not meeting reality's self created woes and short-sighted, narrow-minded delusions that don't allow any grey shades between their black and white, you're-either-with-or-against-me world view. Which is, now that I'm thinking about it, kinda sadly funny and all the more contradictory as the essence of LGBTQ should be diversity, no? And here you are, slapping labels on everything and everyone, ever so quick at jumping to conclusions, pointing fingers, playing the victim and spouting terms like "toxic", "-phobic" - and the list goes on and on - you have no real interest in or understanding of because you're simply grasping for tools and weapons to wield to defend your oh so fragile egos. All while watering down said terms, stepping on the bodies of truly affected people and taking away the acknowledgement they would really need because of your petty protagonist syndrome.
One last thing: Personally, I divide people in two categories only: asshole or no asshole, annoying behavior or appropriate behavior. I couldn't care less about your sexuality, your skin color, your origins or anything else for that matter. To me, the true acceptance lies in normalizing any and all variations, not by giving obtrusive spotlights and obnoxious mouthpieces. But if everyone is equal - which you claim to be your ultimate goal - no one can be a special snowflake anymore... What a pity.
Justice and equity are worth fighting for. Ending oppression is worth fighting for. Making environments safe for people of all stripes is worth fighting for.
But there's no benefit to be gained here. Preventing people from filtering out the term "LGBT" does not help the queer community, because the act of folks ignoring the term "LGBT" causes the queer community no harm. Is it unfortunate that it's happening, and does that suggest there are issues that need to be addressed? Absolutely. But it's a symptom of a problem, not the actual problem.
And the unfortunate truth is that fighting against this not only doesn't help the queer community, but it actively harms them. Because by advocating to needlessly restrict people's behavior — which is innately oppressive — it makes the queer community seem more unwelcoming to people who oppose all oppression, while also painting the queer community in a bad light.
There are a lot of important battles the queer community still needs to fight to be able to safely live our day-to-day lives. This is not one of them. When we fight meaningless battles, we waste time and energy that could be put to good use. So I encourage you to be thoughtful about picking and choosing your battles. To do so, make sure you can identify tangible harms; that's how you know you've found a problem. And when you've found a problem, be thoughtful in ensuring that your solutions don't simply redirect those harms in a different direction. It's hard work, but it's the work we need to put in if we want to truly end oppression.
I'd like to think that this thread started as bait, and that may be the case. But on the off-chance that it's not, I hope this acts as helpful advice to OP and anyone else who could use it.
Simple counter-example: If you flash your rolex watch in a rundown street at night and you're getting robbed, there are two truths at work here.
One, being robbed is a crime and should be punished and no, it wasn't your fault but - second truth incoming - was it a good idea to act so careless? No, it wasn't.
So it wasn't your fault but it was also not a good idea. People fear that kind of mindset because they feel much safer in a black and white environment.
If everything is possible and two paradoxes can co-exist, how are they to judge and set boundaries? Well, things are getting more complicated for sure. But also a wider variety of people can get seen, heard and understood instead of being cancelled for one single misstep. Communication and staying open-minded and being willing to learn and evolve is key.
I'm not gonna use the chat filter much myself, but like, people are allowed to use it in anyway they see fit, the chat filter existing is a more net-positive for everybody than a net-negative due to the random chud who doesn't care for LGBT people much, and even then might just do it to avoid those annoying shoutchats, which I can't really blame them for.
Still don't have enough information to make an informed opinion one way or another.
One of two things have happened with his situation. Either Twitch told the proper authorities as they (even at the time) had Amazon money and lawyers, they (the cops) looked into it and found Doc did nothing wrong which would explain why there were no criminal charges against him from the state. Or two.... and this is the much worse thing that could have happened is Twitch didn't tell the police and it needs to be shut down yesterday.
If I had to guess I would say it is option 1 where there was not enough (or any) criminal activity from Doc to the girl as california is one of the few states that pretty much has a 18 or older consent law, so while you may think he is a scummy and terrible human being there (in this instance) isn't enough to call him those names that destroy someone's life. THAT SAID, even before all this came out I didn't like him because he cheated on his partner. Doesn't really matter to me who with. Liked his online persona tho, pretty entertaining.
Very well said. :) And helpfully, peacefully diplomatic, while shifting much needed attention to real issues. We need more people capable of differentiating and self-reflecting.
Edit: Too dumb to quote properly, goes out to LilimoLimomo.
