Feedback: Feeling disappointed by 6.55's narrative, and thus unsure about Dawntrail

You seem to forget that Wuk Lamat had heard of the WOL”s exploits with saving the world, and she’s asking us to help represent her for a chance at the throne. But befor the WOL can trust her, she wants to get to know you via going on a hunt and battling alongside you at the Isle of Haam to see your capabilities. Then she’s sure that you can help her and asks for your support. She does give a run down on what the governing body is and who are the applicable candidates for the throne for when her father retires. She makes it a point that she has good motives for wanting to lead her people.

I swear you guys just rush the story and don’t even read the dialogue. It’s not that hard to understand. The reason why Tural barely gets mentioned leading up to Patch 6.55 is because Tural was never the topic of discussion until Krile mentions it.

To make something better for the future, critique should be welcomed. People saying that Wuk Lamat is the worst character ever are 100% without-a-doubt being dramatic, but my grievance is just pacing more than anything else. Because of G'raha's reticence, I had a bit of reassurance that the concept itself might be handled better.

With respect, we don't have to go with anything. I can try to wring what good I can from the story at every turn and make the best of a bad situation, but if the story is bad or has meaningful flaws, those are worth discussing and critiquing. I've experienced the eloquent and well-realized stories that Final Fantasy 14 is capable of, and I know they're capable of far better than what I'm seeing in 6.55.

They have strong moral compasses, but their insight is imperfect. Both of these characters have multiple stories in their recent past regarding their insight and decisions being flawed and causing harm. Urianger openly admits this to you on the moon, and laments how he has a history of making decisions without exploring alternatives.

If they truly believe that they have found someone worth supporting, then the ethical thing to do would be to have an open discussion with the rest of the Scions about the matter. Thancred should have come out from behind his tree and been like, "Hey, before you commit to supporting this person, let me tell you what I know so that you can make an informed decision, because I think you should support this person instead." That's honest with us, his friends, and it has the potential to add more support to the candidate he thinks will do the best for a nation.

I get the impression that it might just be that we have different feelings about the ethics of eavesdropping. You don't spy on your friends, and if you find yourself in a situation where you're accidentally spying on them, you have two ethical options:

• remove yourself from the situation so you're no longer eavesdropping
• make your presence known

Thancred did neither.

Then when Urianger is informed of this information and how it was gained, he also has an ethical choice to make: keep it secret, or try to make it right. It's a simple thing for Urianger — a character with a lengthy history of giving unsolicited quasi-sagely advice — to impart some basic wisdom about spying on your friends and suggest that they remedy that inequity. But that did not happen.

Maybe that's due to the writer feeling differently than I do about the ethics of eavesdropping. But seeing how all of the Scions seem to be treating this matter of national/world-wide stability as a game, it seems equally likely that the writer just decided to ignore inconvenient aspects of these characters that would get in the way of the story they wanted to tell.

I'll pretend my WoL has said no and skip yawntrail. Simple as.

i've been on these forums long enough that i can tell when a large portion of the community is upset about something going down and just about every single time square either fixes it or fleshes out stuff so it becomes less problematic; particularly when there's several threads discussing it.

people are allowed to complain. i will never understand why so many people feel the need to imagine that their most fav-fav game dev in the universe is in mortal danger from forum posters and they have to take an imaginary bullet for them. you can tell its entirely about them getting mad that the critique exists rather than the critique itself because if they liked it, they would have made a post in support of what's going on instead of butting heads with randos about it.

if you like it, go support it. don't just throw a fit because people are talking about how they don't like it.

It is indeed "out of character", because their characters don't matter anymore. The Scions are not important (they've been all Flanderized), even Wuk is not important. Square Enix is important because they're losing revenue and need some new marketing gimmicks to recover funds from their failed mobile spin-offs. Dawntrail is filled with odd gimmicks that make no sense (the exoticism fetish, the talking animals, Wuk, Krile being a painter, etc.) so they can cram as many as possible in a 5-minute trailer. Along with the train wreck that was FF16, I have no idea what's going on with this company anymore, and apparently neither does the CEO.

This is all in accordance with late-stage capitalism (communism lite) where shareholders dictate the public opinion and values through "free" market control. SE isn't about their business or revenue, it's about pleasing shareholders who already control all the revenue through fiat. Once you notice this, everything makes sense.

It is extremely uncharacteristic of Krile and definitely not in a good way.

TBH I don't know if you know the story of the Aztecs but essentially:

In this case we have a local native bringing in another outside power to seize the throne by force in this contest. What little they know is that because they have done this now they will be beholden to us and they will only think they are in power when in reality we will be. Not dissimilar to the Indians that helped Cortes take out their other local enemies, surely hoping they would get something out of it (they didn't). So if they wanted to avoid the look of colonialism, they kinda failed, and quite frankly, conquest happens everywhere, so that's not entirely the issue. To me the issue is that the WOL is involved its already GG for the other side.

There is literally nothing we can't murder by brute force that will prevent Wuk or whoever we bless with that throne. And then Alphinaud will teach them the right way to lead, probably.

Yeah, that sounds about right. And if the current ruling party gets out of line, the WoL or the Scions will just destroy them or remove them from power and install a new one to lead the state - one that's more in line with their moral opinions, etc. I know people on these forums aren't going to like the optics of the WoL/Scions being conquerors who take by force, but it's pretty much what they are.

But the story is that we support her. So we couldn't have that option.

We support her along with Krile, Alphinaud and Alisaie while Thancred and Urianger will oppose us. That's the story they want to tell, which is why we didn't get to be cautious. We support a largely unknown person to claim the throne of an unknown land, which really is a big deal but whatever, that's what you think about because you care too much, the writers don't think about that. Thancred and Urianger support a different candidate and they seem pretty excited about the prospect of having to clash with us and will not talk to us about it. That way SE can create the conflict between us that they want. Remember how that was asked for on the forums? They just do what we wanted. They don't care about the story, they care about having a story.

They write to arrive where they want with the leadup being wonky and artificial because the story and especially understandable three-dimensional characters really aren't that much of a priority.

eh I feel a lot of you are trying to be philosophic and overcomplicating thing for no reason. Also, you're accusing the writing for something I don't think it does.

Yes, we talk about justice and thing, but it's ultimately our justice, not the universal justice. And if you accuse the writing as trying to whitewashing it, that's because you're not paying attention to the whole but only nitpicking the part you disagree with.

For example, Alysse said something like this to Emer Sect at the end: yes, we may fall short of the lofty standard of the Ancient, yes our world may not be as perfect as yours ... But it is our world, and I'll be damn if I don't fight for it.

The point is, the WoL/Scion are decidedly Hydaelin team. The story had never pretend we are to be some 3rd party with no personal skate who would just look at thing objectively ... and we are not. Ultimately our fight is about our survival much more so about fair justice. Basically, if your justice means deleting me, than **** your justice. And like I said the game never pretended otherwise. Venat openly admit her choice is a path down suffering and torment that subjects the world to a great sin. And even when Emet admit Venat had a point at the end, he still said he would never forgive her for the crap he had to go through.


The story does a good job to provide proper context so it doesn't seemly become a black/white or good/evil thing. What it doesn't try to do is to cast us as some independent arbiter looking from above. It's already decided we already took a side, and our standard/thinking process are framed in one particular reference. The context it provides is simply for the shake the story not feeling one dimensional where we're the unquestionably good guy beating up an unambiguous bad guy. Two sides both have the right to exist, but if there is only enough for one, then it would be ours.


I read through 10 pages of this thread and I think: you have problem with the story because you want to see it the way it never meant to be. Basically you're not judging the story from the PoV of our avatar, you're breaking the 4th wall in order to apply an "alien" concept to the in game world. Judge the story as a person living in Eoza, that's how it's supposed to make sense. The PoV is not intended to be interpreted as someone looking at the screen.

They were busy eating cheesy puffs and watching netflix.

I love 6.0-- it was my favorite MSQ in terms of having peak moments of writing/direction. That said, if you had high expectations for 7.0 I feel like that's on you. While dialogue and characterization can be great, scenarios can sometimes be a letdown, or downright nonsensical.

That's not to say I totally agree and that they didn't justify going to Tural at all. They tried-- the warmongering sibling, Wuk Lamat's anxiety, the desire to learn a new place, etc. But it's definitely not a particularly interesting or strong scenario setup. It feels very safe.

It also doesn't help that they spoiled most of the patch before it was out. They're spoiling the safest elements of the story, so when they happen, it feels extra dull. I might stop watching their media releases, tbh.

Let's not forget this part. They couldn't even make it to DawnTrail before announcing a big new bad whom wants to start a war that the scions will have to put a stop to. Couldn't even let us discover or figure it out ourselves during the next expansion that maybe the person we're backing isn't really who they say there are, or is actually a bad person.

I look forward to the meaningless competition between the scions that'll quickly dissipate by the first dungeon as we'll now have to work together to stop the aforementioned bad brother. Gotta have the Scions together to run trust dungeons obviously.

I'm more amazing at how confidence you are at predicting where the story will go actually. Like because of a 10 minute interaction pre-expansion scene, you "literally" know how the entire next expansion gonna go and resolve? Have you ever considered apply for a writer position? I don't know if oyu have the skill, but like I said your confidence is ... admirable.


Like ... just because you see the arrow point that way, doesn't mean it will go straight down the same way without any twixt and turn. In HW the pope was the one granting us entry, the dragon has always been seen as the bad guy. Heck, the first half of the story we can almost be seen as allies because our mutual enemies Ascian. But shit hit the fan when you realize one side trying to play god, while the other side could have ended the war but have no interest to, because it's suffering that they want. Or more recent Zero's story arc. Putting aside the actual quality which I personally don't think very highly of. But still, it started as a mutual enemy, but end with a mutual corporation and partnership.


Now I'm not saying you will be 100% wrong, 7.0 could go all the way to the end exactly the way you predict. Also, follow any one thing long enough and there will be pattern and certain amount of predictibity can be expected. What is weird is how much confidence you predict the story will fly "straight like an arrow", I'm sorry ... when was the last time the main story of any FF game were straight like an arrow? So the most polite word can I can offer you is ... a bit pre-mature don't you think?

We don't, actually. All we need is three or four party members who can fill any combination of roles around the player. If the twins and Krile are all directly accompanying us then we have a tank, a healer and two DPS, so we're all set.

Regardless of the events before DT, it seems irresponsible for us to try and install a ruler of a nation we know next to nothing about just because they happen to ask us for support first. No matter how many plot hand waves they put in about this being encouraged because it fosters collaboration with other nations or whatever else they try and say. I am also not looking forward to an entire expansion of "trial by combat" when it is an already grossly overused plot device in this game.

It is a video game. There is already a lot of talking and cutscenes as it is. Should we also resolve all our fights with dungeon bosses with peaceful negotiation? At that point we could consider just removing combat from the game and being crafter mains for real.

I think you've misunderstood. Trial by combat is like when Hydaelyn has us prove ourselves by fighting her, rather than just having witnessed our entire journey from2.0 onward and using that as evidence of our worthiness. Trial by combat means for whatever contrived reason you've decided to settle an argument or prove your worth by combat rather than other means.

But ... isn't it also a bit rash for you/us (the players) to think the WoL/Scion ALREADY picked a side though. The dialogue choices for our response were purposely left ambiguous and I doubt it was done unintentional. The (over-eager/desperated) NPC decided to interpret it in a way that most convenience for them but hey, that's ... pretty common behavior. I'm sure literally everyone in this thread, including the people are complaining about this point had done it many times in their our life ... you know, only hear what we want to hear and see only what we want to see? If anything the complain in this thread is a prime example of that. People are predicting what would be a ~30 hours story based on not even pre-story ~5-10min segment (that's right, this is not even the start of the story) just so they can feel disappointed about. Why?



From an objective point of view, our current response is - at best - non-commitmental. Seriously, I'm struggle to see where people pull this "we already take the NPC word for granted and picked a side" ... like ... wut? All we have an allegation, and a request from a local so we at least obliged to investigate, but there is nothing so far indicated we already cast our dice.

As for issue 3, they are treating what we're doing like a cutesy little treasure hunt and if that were the case then there would be nothing wrong about Thancred and Urianger spying on the other team. After all, it's just a game. However, it's a game that decides the next ruler of a country we've never even been to. The weirdness is baked in at a level deeper than the actual spying.

What did you do this summer?

"Went on vacation, murdered a few gods, installed a puppet government, discovered a scifi civilization, wiped them out. The usual, you?"

The way I see it "ok we accept your petition and will investigate". If everything is true as claimed, then sure I can see us try to stop it (that's a given). But I think people are taking it WAY farther than that by implying we take the "petition" as truth and just gonna go over putting down the other guy without ever listen to the other side's story. Like if you file a lawsuit, it's the duty of the judge to "commit" to take the allegation seriously and investigate. Or do you think it's better if the judge just take a glance and dismiss it? At the same time, accepting a case and open the investigation doesn't mean the judge already sided with the accusers and believe the defendant guilty ... which exactly some people here are doing.



Like, the scions had butted in many conflicts, but how many time had them go in just gun blazing without a care by blind truth? Like ... NEVER? How many we had go into a conflict that despite the common wisdom would dictate who the bad and good guys, we still try to do a thoroughly investigation before actually commit to the final resolution? Like ... almost every single times?". This complain not only is a big stretch, it does not even have a historical precedence. The Scion is many thing, and taking accusation for granted is not one of them.

But I think people are taking it WAY farther than that by implying we take the "petition" as truth and just gonna go over putting down the other guy without ever listen to the other side's story. Like if you file a lawsuit, it's the duty of the judge to "commit" to take the allegation seriously and investigate. Or do you think it's better if the judge just take a glance and dismiss it? At the same time, accepting a case and open the investigation doesn't mean the judge already sided with the accusers and believe the defendant guilty ... which exactly some people here are doing.



Like, the scions had butted in many conflicts, but how many time had them go in just gun blazing without a care by blind truth? Like ... NEVER? How many we had go into a conflict that despite the common wisdom would dictate who the bad and good guys, we still try to do a thoroughly investigation before actually commit to the final resolution? Like ... almost every single times?". This complain not only is a big stretch, it does not even have a historical precedence. The Scion is many thing, and taking accusation for granted is not one of them.

It's not a trial. It's a contest. One we've already agreed to participate in on her side. It's not like we're gonna get there and be like "your brother is more loved by the people and has a much better tax policy, I think we'll help make him king instead."

Why not? In fact if that's what gonna happen, then I expect that's exactly what we gonna do. It will be entirely out of character for the Scion to stick to the current petitioner if their story turns out to be a lie.

You're thinking too black and white. That the random woman we agreed to help is "the good one" and the rest are just evil. We know one sibling is bent on conquest and we know another was a student at Sharlyan that the other Scions are willing to help, so it's not a matter of maybe she's an evil liar. Maybe she's not the best person for the job. It's not like the WoL is gonna be like "you sure seem to tremble a lot in battle, guess I'll help your brother be king instead." We're already treating their political system like a Weekend at Bernie's. There is no reason to believe we're gonna put care into our actions once we get there when we've already agreed to make her queen before even getting onto the boat. We obviously don't care who rules over these people as long as it's not the one that wants to attack us.

Very good, citizen. Also what you spoke of earlier in this thread reminded me of something I learned in the Weeaboo Police Academy. That "war is the continuation of policy with other means" and we see many examples of this in Eorzea's history.
