Eh, Elder Scrolls Online and Guild Wars 2 aren't exactly raid focused and are both doing fairly well for themselves with a lot of content geared towards solo pursuits. I play the former in my spare time precisely because FFXIV has had such a lack of content that interests me at the moment. I'm not a raider, either.

Who is we? I have probably played this game longer than you have. I can tell you now, it used to have a lot more casual content, and a lot more harder content. It pretty much appeased everyone. Now there just isn't content. I am not really understanding how you can defend this by saying they aren't turning this into WoW. You have to have content to retain a player base. People left WoW because there was not enough content, and the content they added was just a endless grind.

The recent live letter they are essentially making the trust system for all MSQ content. Thus making this game pretty much have a single player mode. Now no one said anything about catering to raiders, you always seem to bring this up in your posts for reasons beyond me. This is a subscription based MMO and should provide more content for online cooperative play than it would single player play. This is the point of an MMO AKA massive multiplayer online game. I am well aware of how MMOs work. Iamnot against group content as I am not against solo content. I have been playing MMO's since the late 80s, turn based, text, 2d, etc. Some are too group dependant and gate many people from playing. This has been the way it's worked for too many years. Everything evolves. What I do not agree with is another player telling another player how they should enjoy a game. It's why I asked the questions I asked that got ignored. You are labeling people as anti social because you feel?, Why? Are you threatened by someone who would like to accomplish something by themselves? Whose design philosophy? Apparently not Yoshi P's. Maybe thinking outside of the box once in a while will help with your strict definition of what a MMO means.

When these people say content they mean exactly one type of content to the exclusion of others., we all know it. To pretend otherwise is quite disingenuous.

The history of MMOs is an endless procession of games made like you all want..."hard" and "endgame" games made by first gen MMO players who are now devs...and demanded by a small, but exceedingly loud group of first gen MMO players entering middle age and trying to recapture the feeling EverQuest gave them as a kid. They all failed because that isn't what the current gaming population wants. Even your vaunted WoW was from that time and would fail now. I believe it's important for the game to have content that caters to a wide variety of people. That includes raiders. Beast tribes, doh/dol, gold saucer, hunts, triple triad, treasure maps, ex trials, roulettes, alliance raids, exploratory missions, housing, pvp, deep dungeons. It's all different types of content.

However, the game doesn't offer that much in regards to challenge, especially for solo players. Forming statics is more time consuming than some people realize, and sometimes it doesn't work out. When you're playing in a static, you're playing the game on a schedule and raid log.

I can go boot up Dead Cells, Slay the Spire, Guilty Gear Strive, Risk of Rain 2, Hades etc... and have some content that's compelling and engaging. FFXIV doesn't have much in the way of fun replayable content. After weeks of doing the Expert roulette, as much as the developers put a lot of love and time in the endgame dungeons, I can't stomach doing Smileton anymore, and beyond hunts, every other method of gaining tomes is considerably slower.

The sheer number of people that took this bait is honestly a bit impressive.

Indeed SWTOR is a testament to that

Its been so SOLO focused for so long , it had [SOLO] tagged dungeons (flashpoints) that gave you a God bot to heal,dps and tank for you in story mode instances , the planets and the maps for the expansions became series mini maps and corridors and were set in separate instanced "chapters" with not a single soul in sight bar the braindead easy mode enemy npcs


And it had already failed hard years b4 , its recent new "expansion" is a mere few hours long

Having spent over a decade playing World of Warcraft (from BC through BFA) and having spent over seven years playing Final Fantasy XIV, I can safely say this game is nothing much like WoW, nor is it in danger of becoming WoW. People left WoW because the only content that mattered was raiding and Mythic dungeons. You could skip every. single. dungeon. instance. in the game safely while leveling ... believe me, I had one of each class, Alliance and Horde-side, at level 110 when I started to give up. The BFA storyline didn't help.

WoW was a grind. But it came from an era when every MMORPG was a constant grind. Don't get me started about Zevhra hoofs ...

Now, WoW is a just a quick hop, story skip and level jump to Endgame(tm). Doesn't help that they retconned every expansion and book (and man, there were sooooo many books) out of existence in their latest escapades -- for which I blame BFA and the subsequent Travesty that exists now for the Exodus.

This game, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, has a well-planned schedule of content patches, designed for those people who are not particularly concerned about raiding every week until the next patch comes out.

The first two years of ARR were chock-full of things you might remember fondly mostly because the developers weren't sure what would stick. They certainly became more comfortable with scheduling (and finding what didn't stick) during Heavensward.

The game has lots of content. It just isn't content that you, specifically, wish to consume. And that's ok. Square Enix isn't that concerned that you maintain a constant subscription. When the content you're specifically looking for has been consumed, their attitude is "Take a break. Go do something else."

You can take it from someone who is certainly older, if not wiser, than you: "There is more to life than a single MMORPG". There are multiple MMORPGs to play concurrently! And single-player games! And, um, books and music and Netflix and ...

Criticism has its place. But a thread that starts out with a title like "Please Grow the MMO part of the game. End game is Lousy" followed by a misinterpretation of what was actually said in the last live letter, along with general handwaving and an assertion that "Your game is literally emptying out right now because of low content." seems to be the definition of "troll bait", rather than criticism.

I've read forum posts that start with criticism, they usually contain more actual critiques than git gud, dev team, do what I want.

keep in mind, a leaf can go to maxxed out everything and experience all the game has to offer in less than a year if not less than half a year
tons of content or not, it's just more of the exact same type of content each expansion which makes it even worse after a player has fully realised and experienced all the content

Like I said, I've been playing for over seven years now. I know what's available, I know there's more that I haven't done in-game than stuff I've actually finished. I dabbled for an entire boat ride with Ocean Fishing and was like "meh, not for me at this time". Doesn't mean I won't pursue it later.

A question for you: do you have all crafters and gatherers at level 90, with a full set of Master Recipes? Have you finished each and every Sightseeing log entry? Have you fished at each and every fishing hole in the game? There's plenty to do, but it probably doesn't suit your tastes, nor should it. If the only thing you mean by 'content' is Quests and Endgame Instances, you're missing out.

I spend days not playing Final Fantasy XIV. I have gotten to the final trial in current content but haven't done it yet. I don't plan on raiding. I play games when I want to have fun, not because I have to play to get my money's worth. I enjoy Dungeon and Dragons and have done so on-and-off for over 40 years. I enjoy reading fanfiction, watching anime, listening to music, writing/Role-playing in-game and outside of the game. I take classes to learn Japanese. I play other MMORPGs for an evening.

This game is not the Center of my Universe, although it is the one MMORPG that I'll come back to, again and again. There are a lot of players I've come to know and enjoy their company over the last seven-plus years.

I heartily believe in the advice that SE's Producer gave out a while back "take a break. do something else".

(Yeah, I raised two of them, yeah, only one of them played WoW, yeah, they both own Playstation consoles and play games only occasionally now that they're in their mid-twenties/early thirties).

“take a break do something else, but don’t be gone for more than 45 days otherwise you lose your hard earned house and now to get it back you need to play with rng.” Yeah great motto. I can answer your question. I have all my crafters and gatherers to 90. I’ve had it that way since like, late december early january. I’ve finished savage raiding for this tier. I’ve done ocean fishing, all the fishing holes, diadem, ishgard restoration, relics you name it. Honestly there’s nothing pulling me into the game anymore, especially with some of the job decisions this expansion(healing is a major problem that Yoshi P just handwaved in the recent QnA, he clearly doesn’t care). 6.1 will be an alli raid which you do once a week and you’re done. Island sanctuary which will be housing and minion farms in one it seems. And then an Ultimate which a pretty small portion of the playerbase does, not to say it’s insignificant of course but still. That seems to be about it. We’ll be waiting until August for the next raid tier.This all doesn’t even account for the fact they’re now going to be focusing on making the game a single player visual novel basically. Which means less time put towards new content and more time being put towards old content for new players, something that we saw happen in ShB.

I think the problem with end game right now is that there isn't enough to do other than your weeklys for tomes/raid gear item. I know there is new content on the horizon for patch 6.1 like alliance raid, new dungeon, etc. but there needs to be more added to the formula between patches.

Some suggestions to buff end game content:
They need a new pvp system with glamour rewards to give incentive for people to want to pvp. ( I know this is on the way, but they are taking a LONG time to add this).
89-90 dungeons should always have gear that people will want to go back and run the dungeon for, not trash accessories or undyeable old gear.
More world content
Beast Tribe quests should have been added at EW launch, having no new beast tribe to grind rep right now sucks.
Cosmetic rewards for hard content (like vouchers for hairstyles, make up/face paint, accessories, etc.)
Mythic type dungeons where people can be challenged in dungeons. I get having levelling dungeons be easier, but endgame content should be harder.
New crafting armor sets that aren't old models from Stormblood expansion Give crafters a reason to want to craft new, sexy gear.

Surely, but ehh, things are much easier than they have ever been.
Even when HQ leves were the sole source of exp, it was fairly easy within a few months to max crafters.

Just to play devils advocate kinda sorta:

I only play this game for the single player bits, with occasional multiplayer aspects. I play the main story, then after that the game serves as a place I can do stuff with my wife and our small circle of friends. I rarely interact with anyone outside of these…6-8 people. I do the alliance raids maybe once a week if I need the gear or like the glamour. The most interaction I do is a Christmas giveaway every year.

I do not do: pvp, 8 man raids/trials, relic grinds/Eureka/Bozja, RP.

For me, the best things the game has after the story is “stuff to do with my friends”, like ocean fishing, treasure hunts, and gold saucer. The upcoming island thing will be very welcome.

The devs have the retention numbers, and I believe they understand what the majority of players actually do and what tends to retain customers the best. The devs have also made it clear that making, tweaking and balancing fights are incredibly time consuming when compared to other things they could make. The fact they don’t spend more on such things tells me that endgame stuff likely just isn’t as popular as many make it out to be, or the development time doesn’t give as big a return on investment when compared to some other things. Indeed, they opted to cut deep dungeon and an ultimate entirely from 5.0’s cycle in favor of something like the Ishgard restoration.

Just my humble opinion.

Ye add more solo things to a game where people fell forced to even say a welcome /hi to people the the party they are part of is not good. More so from the get go. We need to make it so more people fell they need others and not just a bot.

Don't blame the game for that. Whenever I join a group I always say hi and I often chat with complete strangers. Sometimes it really IS the people themselves who are the impediment to more sociability.

Yes, that'd be ironic, the game becoming like the Plenty in the Dead Ends as the 'stress' of certain gameplay aspects is stripped out and it is turned into a visual novel.

No i started playing because i grew up playing different ff games and loving it. Now i did come from another mmo but player toxicity tufned me off of group contemt so i was extremely worried about trying yhis game knowing that in order to progress story group was mandatory. I did start playing despite this and found with very few exceptions that the community here seems way different. Well this opens the door for many more people seeing this too.

I find it hard to take these "wrong demographic" comments seriously when I am that demographic.

For years I was an "except 11 and 14" FF fan, but 14 is incredibly single player friendly, and affordable in that you get 2 games for free, and then a free months sub to get through most of the other 3 games.
You can get 5 single player games worth of content for the price 2 plus one or two months subscription. It's a bargain what what is probably one if the best Final Fantasies.

The game will always be a Final Fantasy, just as much as it is an MMO. This isn't an either/or situation. They literally just need to roll back the trust system and all the boxes are ticked.

This post is beautiful. I lived in New York city for about 2 years. I loved the ambience of constantly being surrounded by people. Hate living in the country. Doesn't mean I wanted to say hi with every person I encountered lmao. Most of the time spent inside playing games. The atmosphere of being around other people is enough for some.

Frankly, I'm all for them expanding on Trusts; not because I agree with this odd philosophy they're pushing about attracting single player holdouts, but simply because as it stands, SE has created an environment that pushes for the selfishness and inadequacy of some players to be carried through content by those who actually put effort into performing to a basic standard expected in team-based content. So much so, that I'd rather just do things with Trusts when my friends aren't available to fill out party space.

They may be slower, but at least Thancred isn't going to start screaming and threatening me when I pull the second pack of mobs to him. At least Alphinaud will DPS his little heart out when he isn't having to heal. Honestly, if they ever gave Trusts the ability to AoE? They'd probably kill things much faster than a good majority of players, lately.

I think SQE is a little tone-deaf right now with this decision, and are not focusing on the people they should be focused on - MMO players who will be here for a long time, rather than people who avoid MMOs entirely for very specific reasons - but if it means they improve on Trust capabilities, then sure. Go for it, I guess. Here's hoping they actually give them an Engage button a la squadrons, and let them AoE.

Did you know Thancred actually does have one of GNB's AoE skills? Yeah. Now let him do that multiple times instead of just the once to gain aggro.

So let me just get this question out of the way. Why do so many players have an us verses them mentality? They have plenty of things out there for group content and continually add new stuff but the moment they devs say ghey are adding the feature to allow solo playing. They arent temoving the ability to group with other players but still there is an outcry of its not what i want so dont do it. I never understood this position in any game i have played. Im not a high end savage or ultimate player but i dont cry out against them adding stuff like that because some people enjoy it.

Btw, the Story-Side of FFXI is also soloable and has been for some time. It has trusts as well, they work a bit different as FFXIV and used to be for over world content but nowadays you can unlock them to for the story fights. Graphics are ten year older than FFXIV's of course. But the stories hold up imo.

It's pretty simple; it really just boils down to this:

1) Devs announce feature X, or adjustment Y
2) The vocal player(s) who don't like the above, complain that dev time should instead be going towards thing Z.

Both sides have vocal annoying players who complain about every single thing on this forum, but the grand majority don't really care THAT much beyond offering an opinion.

There are times where it is a genuine complaint that does raise enough concern that the devs respond to it, but often not. Like, I would prefer dev time not be spent on viera/hrothgar headgear when it could go towards, say, another dungeon...but there are many who DO want that..and indeed maybe it is time for the devs to focus on such back-burner issues.

The game's population exploded over the past year, due to a massive influx of people interested in the game because it's an mmorpg. This is the prime example of confirmation bias.
There are of course lots and lots of people whose mental picture of an MMO is 14 year-olds furiously typing "your mum" in chat and they wouldn't touch this genre with the barge pole. Tapping into that market is a smart business strategy.

This misinterpretation of what the Producer actually stated would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad. Players asked SE to expand the Trust system to older content. There were enough players asking that SE decided to implement them.

The sad part is that players who believe this appear to have ignored every other mention of new content in the game from those same slides. A new deep dungeon; Criterion dungeons; mention of post-savage raids.

By the way, "take a break, do something else" does not require you to stop paying a subscription and lose your house. It does mean you have to decide whether a single MMORPG is going to be the primary focus of your life or not. There is no law in the entire world that requires you to play FFXIV, and only FFXIV, every single day in order to get your money's worth of enjoyment from the game. That way lies madness and burnout.

I was using the words of the original poster, since SE has apparently produced a lot of 'extremely bad' games lately according to them. They did have games that weren't particularly successful back in SE's FY2020. [March 2019-March 2020]
