The idea is ok, and thus reason they plan to take elements from prior games and implement them into 14. One such thing is Crystal Tower along with the Legacy Weapons. They plan to make small nods to all the past games but throwing all game elements from all the past game is a BAD idea this way is much better.
This way we get a original story that is pure 14 with additions that make since to the world from the past games we love. I was actually happy to hear this when it first was told; get small story, plot, side-quest, npcs, lore, and items that pay tribute the the history of the series.
re OP,
I've been with the FF series since FFI on the Famicom/NES So I'm as old-school as a FF fan can be.
Your initial proposal is interesting, but I don't think it's right for this series. This sort of overt fan-service is more a hallmark of nintendo, capcom or namco rather than SE. It works for less serious games, not epic storylines.
FFXII did a fantastic job bringing back the old FF bosses as espers. It would be nice to see the zodiac of FF bosses become the standard upper pantheon of summons in future FF games.
FFIX also had nice fan service in it's return of the four fiends, FFX brought back the Magus Sisters, FFXI had the original game's starting Jobs, and FFXIII.... well.... it reminded me of how forgettable FFII was.
However, when it comes to fan-service and borrowed elements, no FF game does it better than XIV.
We have:
- FFI: The universal FF elements: Airships, Crystals, etc..
- FFII: Old SP system based on actions was lifted from FFII's "leveling" system... Nothing currently though.
- FFIII: Crystal Tower
- FFIV: The Two Moons
- FFV: Cross Job (Class) ability equipping
- FFVI: Magitek (the concept art of the 'mount' is the EXACT same design as FFVI, awesome fan service there!) World of Ruin (post 2.0 landscape)
- FFVII: Materia, Meteor as a world destroying spell.
- FFVIII: Gunblades
- FFIX: Quina's fork (Mog LNC weapon lol)
- FFX: Nothing comes to mind... if they add swimming maybe...
- FFXI: Main Races, Campaign (Grand Company), Garuda (summon version), Artifact Armor, Sanction, Linkshells, much more...
- FFXII: Judges (Empire Generals) - Art Direction is also similar
- FFXIII: eh.. the now-removed action/stamina bar, Perhaps Dalamud is like Coccoon...
- FFT: Multi-class prerequisites for unlocking new jobs
Stuff that would be fantastic to see added to FFXIV:
- FFI : The four fiends with their own elemental dungeons
- FFIII: Evoker Class → Summoner Job
- FFIV: Visit to the moon, magnetic cave, Demon Wall
- FFV: Gilgamesh (or like FFXII version)
- FFVI: True Auction House, Colosseum
- FFVII: Ruby/Emerald weapons (maybe when the cap hits 90)
- FFVIII: Triple Triad, Quezacoatl as a Summon
- FFIX: Chocobo Hot and Cold, Treasure Map hunting
- FFX: Shoopuf style mounts for crossing special terrain into new areas.
- FFXI: BC fights, Nyzul Isle type dungeon, Large scale events, endgame.
- FFXII: Mob Hunts, Zodiac Espers
- FFXIII: Voice Acting
- FFT: Chemist/Engineer Class, more building on a "Job Tree" type system
yeah but see, that's different. gilgamesh is a dimensional hopper who always mantains his purpose in life.
dimension hopping yourself to meet characters from other final fantasy titles just because you liked their games is cheesy.
FF have serious story lines, finite storylines. They begin and they end.
its not about the characters, its about stories bigger than these people who become grand because of the circumstances.
I don't want to walk into cecil's and rosa's married life. what the hell. I don't want to see what they're up to. That's fan service for the sake of fan service.
Its a neat idea I guess but I vastly prefer playing a new storyline with new characters... Especially in my MMO.
"The in-game world will feature the entire environments from Skyrim to Morrowind", however the map will not be entirely open for exploration, as certain areas are planned to be used for future expansions. Cyrodiil will make for the main capital of the raging war, where players can engage in endgame PvP"

the best mainline final fantasy? NOT AT ALL.
final fantasy tactics.
final fantasy xii.
final fantasy 7 and 8 even, and they are way more mainstream.
ffx is better too.
hell, final fantasy 5 and 6? hands down better.
ffix was a HUGE step back in FF quality.
its funny how even the older final fantasy titles have better art than ffix's crap. they are hideously deformed. the proportions are all wrong on most people... but on some not. consistency, can I have it?

^^ with this crap.
the art is so lousy on this game that garnet's arms are longer's than zidane's while HE is actually taller.
its like they used different canons for everyone.
half the people look like super deformed midgets with down syndrome while kuja is actually a full sized human being.
You need to take one or two art classes.
Chibi is a form of art.
Actually, I like the idea of elements from the other games aside from the heroes... We are the heroes of FFXIV.
They should just keep giving subtle nods to previous games like they have been so far. "What's your name? Sefiross? XxxSephirothxxX?" Stuff like that. Unless a game is a direct sequel, (which I haven't been too crazy about the ones they've made) I don't feel they should inject past characters into a brand new titled game. Dissidea was a bit different altogether, but seeing physical manifestations of previous characters in this game would kind of ruin it for me. This game should stand apart from the others.
I'm all for that idea and i even suggested it before. Problem is that most pple here never played the other FF games. Most only played XI and if you suggest taking something from other FF games they say it's wrong. But if you suggest gear swapping or wtv we had in XI then it's a blessing and that it should be done because they are both from the same company.... as if XI was the only FF title for square..... see the pattern here?
Um... you do know FF9 was a throwback to old FF's ...... the art everything >.>Quote:

This is a load of horse crap. Whenever ppl say this, they never really mean it. Generally, this is the translation: "My idea is so awesome no one can possibly disagree with me, so I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts telling me how awesome the idea is, and ppl who disagree are obviously stupid, poorly educated, can't see the vision, or lack creativity." After reading through the thread, I'm pretty convinced the translation is accurate. You are so hyped up on your own idea, so convinced of its greatness, that you are unable to comprehend the possibility that it is not a good idea at all. Really, why bother asking for opinions when you don't want them. The only thing you want is others to job you in order to make you feel more awesome in coming up with the idea. These types of threads I like to call "self-validation" threads. They are threads designed to get others to agree with them, so that the OP can elevate his sense of self-worth and self-importance. Generally the OP takes a stance on a topic which he feels will garner the most agreement. In other words, he picks a bandwagon he thinks a lot of ppl will jump on. If it is an "original" idea (read: creating a new bandwagon) then it increases the risk of disagreement, but also increases the reward due to its originality. Here we have it, a self-validation thread gone horribly horribly wrong. It was a good try though.
Your idea is bad, at least for MMORPGs. For one, its not even an original idea. Crossovers have existed for decades, in all parts of media/art/entertainment. Everything from All-stars games, to spin-offs, to music mashups, to collaborations, all represent the same idea: bring a lot of popular things together into one product. I'm almost certain this idea gets tossed out with every product a franchise has ever though of creating. Its a basic idea, easy fanservice, and requires the least amount of effort. You can copy/paste designs, with a little updating/consolidation, re-use certain animations, spin-off existing storylines, all while raking in tons of money because nostalgia will cause ppl to buy just about anything. And in most cases thats all that needs to happen, SE could care less if you burn it 5 days later..they've already locked in profits from your purchase. When it comes to MMORPGs though, SE can't afford you to quit playing...they need you to keep paying for the product. Quite frankly, nostalgia only lasts but so long before an individual recognizes the product for what it is: empty, uninspired, blatant fanservice. At that point you lose all will to play, because there really isn't anything there.
Let me explain a few flaws..
1) Lack of a Persistent Universe: The final fantasy series does not have a persistent universe. This is the biggest roadblock. Because it lacks a persistent universe, there is no thread connecting the various games to each other. None at all. This means a thread will have to be *forced* into the plot in order to connect Midgar to Balamb Garden to Luca. Due to the sheer difference in universes, technologies, clothing styles, city design, etc...anything you do to connect them will be very obviously forced. And there is nothing more disconcerting, and distasteful, in a storyline than a forced universe. A universe should feel natural, not contrived. A contrived universe is an ever-present reminder to the gamer that they are playing a game and not participating in a pseudo-reality. It breaks the fourth wall and leaves it in pieces.
2) Lack of a coherent or original storyline: Related to the first problem is the 2nd problem, the storyline. There is really no good way to go about it, because there is no common denominator. It always boils down to some arbitrary reason worlds are forced together, usually due to some time-space anomaly. Sonic Generations, Kingdom Hearts, (insert other game here), they all use the same storyline with a different villain. Its old. Its shallow. Its not even creative. It can't be, because there just isn't any other logical rationalization for mashing a bunch of worlds together that existed in separate universes. Efforts to be creative usually end up as incoherent and convoluted, precisely because the topic (time-space anomalies) is not something easily understood even by the most accomplished of physicists. Now you're asking everyday gamers to understand it? Lol.
3) Lack of consistency: I'll use kingdom hearts as a perfect example of this point. For those of us who have played through the final fantasy series, we know how powerful some of the characters are. If Cloud shows up in my FFXIV, there is no reason why he can't go destroy (insert primal, villain, army here)...or why (insert black mage here) doesn't just drop a meteor wherever the hell he/she pleases. These crossovers have horrible consistency when it comes to power levels, precisely because they were originally balanced for single player games in isolated universes. Take Kingdom Hearts. Explain to me how a kid who's been swinging an oversized key for less than a year is able to handle both Cloud and Squall in the Coliseum. There's no way. Squall could one-shot him with any given limit break, and Cloud could lay him out a few times over. Tell me how a few swings from a key can put Squall down, when Squall can tank giant explosions from ultima weapon? You may think this is petty, but these inconsistencies can make die-hard fans of certain characters nerd-rage like you wouldn't believe. Its stupid for a boy who's balls have yet to drop, who hasn't known war, and has yet to see puberty, can fight two veterans who saved their respective planets on equal ground. Just. A. Joke. Explaining this in a universe also requires contrived reasons, further destroying the mind's ability to suspend disbelief.
All in all its a bad idea. I could go on, but it just doesn't work for MMORPGs. It can work for single player games, sure, as they dont need to be fun very long. But for a game you want ppl to pay for month after month? Just no. Nostalgia isn't that powerful.
Some people shouldn't be let anywhere near art.
Crazy Sora and his keyblade of mass destruction.
I don't think an MMORPG would work for these types of elements. And IF they ever decide to do it, I propose a reboot rather than the dimensional links.
Gilgamesh, Dissidia and FF13-2 hint that all dimensions are connected, but I'm not a fan of that concept and I'm certainly not a fan of Gilgamesh's interdimensional adventures...
Perhaps only he and his comrade can make the journey happen? The adventures Gilgamesh and Enkidu!
Sorry to dwindle your post down to just this, but I felt compelled to say that I really love FFXII. FFXIII I wasn't impressed, but that's just 1 (official numbered, discounting FFXIII-2) game, so really my statement would then read:
"I did not like the last Final Fantasy." Or..."I did not like the Final Fantasy before this one," since FFXIV is the highest numbered one to date, and I rather enjoy this game. :)
But since I liked IV, VI, VII, IX, XI and XII so much, they still have pretty solid track record in my mind. So basically my point is just, I don't understand why everyone gives SE such a hard time...
Dissidia is actually the perfect concept if it was in a normal RPG setting rather than a fighting game. I mean, FFIX made a 'multiverse' work in a sense even if the 2nd world and it's culture was destroyed 30 minutes after you get there, so they have..well had it in them.
Though sadly the world is no longer a place for deep intertwined storylines, it's all fast paced "action action!" now, so unless they can make an action game that lasts 5 hours with a multiverse I don't see it happening.
I can agree with this i loved FF 13 although i hate FF2 and wont ever play it again. I die a little inside when ppl say they liked FF 10 but hate 13 both are basically made the same way >.>. One just has useless towns the other one doesn't.
Only thing FF 13 was lacking for me was back tracking to old area's.
Only works if paradox and memory erase explains everything. Paradox is the reason for everything. Homework missing? Future you stole it to turn in /paradox Dog missing? Past you decided to take dog back because accidentally killed it /paradox. Game sucks? Future you told you to stop playing it /paradox. etc.
So like a Kingdom Hearts MMORPG?
Yeah, no thanks.
Heh, when I played 13, I remember everything I hated about 10. Nomura Action game = no thanks. And FF2 is easily the worst of the numbered series.
Fortunately, FF11, and FF12 (esp intl. Zodiac) were so good, SE got lots of slack from me with 10 and 13...
But overall, I'm rather tired Nomura's art and I completely disagree with Toriyama/Kitase's philosophy when it comes to FF games:
From Wikipedia (emphasis mine):
This is why FFXIII was such a lousy Final Fantasy game, despite being a half-decent action game.Quote:
Motomu Toriyama has a similar game design philosophy to Yoshinori Kitase. He believes his strength is in creating games that are very story-driven.[2] He also believes that it becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when the player is given a huge amount of freedom to explore.[3] According to him, the most important aspect of a Final Fantasy game is the characters.[4] Toriyama aimed for the game design of the first half of Final Fantasy XIII to play like watching a film. The reason was so the player could become absorbed with the story and characters and not get distracted or lost
Sometimes I wish SE would just break the series up into subgroups:
- Final Fantasy Worlds: FF1-9, 12,
- Final Fantasy Dramatic Action: FF10, 10-2, 13, 13-2,
- Final Fantasy Online: FF11, 14
- Final Fantasy Tactics: FFT, A, A2, 12rw, etc.
- Final Fantasy Dissidia: Dissidia, Duodecim, etc.
Oh, and:
- Final Fantasy Abominations: FFMQ
Future paradox won't stop most people from themselves I think.
If the folks here who hated FF13 had a future them surface.
Future "You're not going to like this game."
You "It's Final Fantasy."
Future "I'm you from the future! I've played this game! I didn't like it, hence, you won't like it."
You "Maybe I'm different, because I don't have the same tastes as you."
Future "We're the same person! Fine! You don't want to listen?"
*Future you steals your money from present-day you and returns to future*
You "Could have told me the winning lotto numbers, jerk."
yes your point is moot, TES games are one world final fantasy games are a different world.. if they made an mmo of the world for TES then you would be able to go to all of these places(ie not fan service because i repeat SAME WORLD.) for a FF it would make no sense and even if they did try to explain it, IT WOULD BE STUPID. now shut your trap you are making no sense. SHUT IT
I can agree with everything you said, just strikes me odd the crowed that loved FF 10 so much has gripes when 13 when they are designed the same way. I just like each FF for what they were, I don't hate something just because it's not like the last one. Only reason i say i hate FF 2 cause of its battle system. So in the FF lifespan i loved FF IV, IX, XII, and XIII the most. Spent the most time playing those.
haha okay you slam 9 because of its disproportion of arm size? then slam 7 ugliest final fantasy and way over hyped. 8 was horrible. tactics was amazing but not a mainline final fantasy. everyone has their favourite final fantasy title but your opinion on 9 is stupid and like I said before your reasonings are a stretch.. seriously who gives a fk?! it is the best final fantasy on the ps1 and ps2(not counting XI) and second is XII which was basically offline XI with a different world.
Where do you get all this resentment from? and art classes? the art style is chibi and is a throw back to the sprite based final fantasies(also chibi) which is why they used the art style in the first place. go back to art class. and stop sharing your opinion because you sound like an idiot 'ZOMG HES TALLER BUT THEIR ARMS ARE THE SAME SIZE GUIS ITS A HORRIBLE GAME!' ya... shut up
FFMQ forever!!! If your ally could level up / pick your all(y/ies), my goodness.
It says I had to put something to post the hidden box... but does it have to be in non-white text?
I was a bit miffed about the super-deformed characters at first, but since FFI-FFVI all had super deformed chars I understand the reasoning. (I know, I know.. the concpept art for I-VI wasn't super deformed, but gameplay graphics were).
The only area where FFIX really suffered was the story... It just felt lacking. But it was a cute and nostalgic game that had lots of little nods to the 8-bit and 16-bit era of FF. On top of it all, it was actually a really fun game to play, so I think SE did a good job with it.
BTW, does anyone remember the compeltely worthless US strategy guide for FFIX? Every bit of useful info required you to log into a website and put a code in.. it was beyond terrible.
DNO please explain why you think if they made a TES MMO visiting old locations is fan service? those locations are there, theyve always been there - you were just not able to access them in different iterations of the game. if the mmo is of the world and you have full access to the continent do you expect them to throw out all their lore, world map everything? NO that is the world. If im in midgar and I want to chocobo across the map to get to San'Doria it would make no sense
yeah the wackos in the thread can have that game and be the only 4 people buying it
I think if such a thing happened... I would prefer a mad reboot of the stor(y/ies). And probably not necessarily an MMORPG. Still thinking Final Fantasy Musou-style (one man army) with multiplayer and RPG elements.
Hidden box to spare your eyes...
Merge and reboot the worlds into one (as if dimensional boundaries and time travel might not exist.) Redraw and adapt character relationships, landscapes, power structures, power levels, and motives as necessary.
Whether you have megacorporation vs. empire vs. resistance vs. chaos.
AVALANCE, Returners and NORA plus others might form a resistance group against the megacorp and the empire. They might operate between poorly monitored corporation/imperial cities and neutral trade cities. Operations funded by noblemen like Banon or a mysterious benefactor a.k.a. Rufus.
Empire might consist of several nations with emphasis on militaristic conquest, with Archadia, Baron, Figaro, and Dalmasca... employing the use of ancient resources as weapons (aethryte), superior chocobo forces, airships and cannons powered by crystals, coercing summoners to fight for them.
Megacorporation might consist of with several corporation leaders such as Rufus, Dysley, and Gestahl ~ utilizing magitek weaponry, enslaving espers in magicite, airships powered by magicite, kidnapping summoners to create magicite out of eidolon powers, etc.
And chaos might be a group of ancients, insane bastards, or warmongers planning to do the eradicate the world. Manipulating the strings of others to make this come to fruition. Be that a crazed engineer, a Kefka, a hidden agenda Dysley, a Yuna-plz-marry-me Seymour, making Sephiroth go nuts... again, liches, dark knights, rallying beastmen, or eidolons convinced that man-and-mooglekind is just unsalvageable (because they do wicked crap like enslaving espers in magicite and use aethryte (life stream?) as a weapon).
Maybe some engineering organization that tries to remain neutral, let's call 'em C.I.D. (crazy indigenous dastards that they are) that have split their allegiances.
Perhaps story lines are more event driven, with multiple characters that can be selected per mission.
i.e. a train mission led by the liberation... with Snow and Tifa as brawler types, Lightning and Cloud as sword types, each with their own play mechanic. Snow might have a taunt ability. Cloud's mechanic may be interchanging his swords. They hijack a train maybe as an attack on the megacorporation akin to the FF7 opening mission, end up fighting against Turks, a Judge and Archadian troops leading their own assault, and a mentally warped Terra piloting a new magitek warmech for a boss (free the esper girl). Maybe on Hard mode she would transform into esper mode while piloting.
Or a concert / opera house mission set as a trap to lure Setzer (unpredictable sexy coin-flipping bastad in an airship causing trouble for megacorporation and empire alike OR the resistance want to utilize him for their cause). Celes might represent the megacorporations as an opera singer (mayhaps using a magicite of a Siren), Yuna goes along on behalf of the resistance, and throw in some third character to represent the Empire (does Garnet sing?). Throw in a Bayohne (or if he's taken, Ultros) + a Judge to monitor the ground situation, Resistance sneaking around up top, and some Megacorp elites who have a second motive of kidnapping summoners. If the players choose a songstress, they control the lines that are sung to pull a convincing performance that may buy additional time to capture Setzer. If not a songstress, the player will be responsible for preparing the assault against Setzer, sabotaging other factions and avoid interrupting the performance to corner the gambling man.
And yes... these might have been plots ripped from older table-top gaming sessions under a Final Fantasy ruleset... minus the celebrity characters. Eheheh.
Short version: The more I think about this, the more the following picture seems relevant:

...I'll stop... for now. You win this day Santa Claus. *shakes fist*
I have tagged you as an internet bully officially. All you do is talk negative and put people down. I havnt seen one positive thought come out of your brain in all of these pages. Just saying. Actually FF9 is probably one of the most original and old school referencing ff of any game.
Opera - 6
Biggs, wedge.
Garland
Weapons
Vivi
etc.etc.
Summons (before 10 decided to rename them for some reson?!)
Great storyline (Funny/dramatic plot twists, hell queen brahn dying, towns getting blown up! Give me a break FFXII had a garbage storyline, the voice acting was crap, its combat system was equally garbage. At least let me control my freaking team. Gambits were balls) The idea of the world was amazing based off of Tactics though.
Yall gotta stop thinking on a track why does a multiverse have to be like Kingdom hearts or Dissidea. HEll look at the two they are both multiverse and both completely different so why cant this concept?
Also just so everyone knows I hate every ff game that wasnt on a ps1 or lower. I think FFX was garbage and the only reason i mentioned it and gave it any sort of credit is because it was the beggining of the end not the end.
FACT: LOST ODYSSEY WAS THE ORIGINAL STORYLINE FOR FFX AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN FFX! Would have been a better game.
Okay, so here's what I think:
The game could work if you the player were a real person in our world, dreaming about all the different FF games. Each zone would be one of the different FF games. Different areas of the zones reflect different points in the timeline of the game(zone) you're currently in. One zone would be for like levels 1-10, another game would be 11-20, etc. Each zone would have an instance/raid that would allow you to party up and fight the bosses from the respective game. A "hard mode" would exist for all raids that would allow max level characters to party and kill again, but the fight would be different. You'd start out as one class, but every time you change zones you have to change to one of whatever classes exist in the game you're currently playing in. The thing that would keep people playing the game after all the zones/games and killing the hard mode bosses would be PVP and extra open world "events" that would happen, which could be explained as "Some other dream is trying to invade your current dream" or something like that.
Lots of extra thought would have to be put into it to make it a viable option, but the only question that matters is, how many people would play it? I doubt very many people would do that, tbh, and since not many people would play it, it won't be made. Making a game is a huge money sink if you already foresee it failing.
And what? It's Tamriel, it's like Eorzea, Skyrim is like Ala Mhigo, Morrowind is Ul'dah. Akaviri is like Garlean. Do you even play TES?
Tamriel is a continent FYI, Akaviri come from a different continent and the bulk of that continent civilisation are still barely mentioned in TES lore. Also, there are actually landmass of Cyrodiil and Morrowind in Skyrim.
Once again, crossover fighting games and comics are entirely different than a "crossover" MMO. Unless you mean to imply that this MMO would have no emphasis on telling a cohesive story, in which case, I think a lot of Final Fantasy players would be pretty disappointed.
Aside from that, calling something "the MUGEN of MMOs" is probably more likely to scare people away than anything lmao
................................................ sorry
