RIP Minion Collectors :(

While I am personally of the belief that nothing should ever be exclusive or limited, that's clearly not how this game was designed, and that's fine. (And I say that as a 1.0 player with a whole bunch of stuff most of the population can currently never get.) But let's not pretend it's some weird thing to want to get 100% completion in a game. It's so ubiquitous, plenty of games actually have a % meter, and half of the premise of Undertale is about how players feel obligated to do everything in a game.

And I do find it disingenuous that SE includes minions in expensive purchases and then turns around and does this. Well, either that, or foolish - I agree with some early posters that I think the number of people buying plushies and live streams for minions is going to drop precipitously as a result.

What was the brainstorm session for this?

Dev 1: Hey, PvP is still unpopular, people doesn't seem motivated by one time exclusive rewards... Any ideas to solve this?
Dev 2: Well, if we want to motivate more players to try pvp, how about we give them EVEN MORE one time exclusive rewards?
Dev 1: You think more of them will work if after 2 seasons they havent joined..?
Dev 2: This time they will work, because, we will make them... A mount and a minion.

My problem is that they try various ways to get people to do PvP and only like 1% of people give a rat's behind about it.
If you make PvP more enjoyable instead of a Zerg Rush, mindless zombie dance off with 5 skills then maybe people will care.
PvP is this games weakest of all content and it needs to be seriously thought through.
Front Lines was a good idea, they need to take a look at their other Team focused PvP game called Fantasy Earth Zero
[Being one of my fave mmos before shutting down and my fave PvP game ever.] and see what they can do.

Minion collecting is one of the most fun and interesting things that has kept me hooked on the game, and now they're making it literally impossible for me to have them all. :(

Please, PLEASE re-think this SE.

To the people that don't get it: It's not the fact that it's an "exclusive" reward (which is absolutely fine and the top PvP players deserve something to commend this), it's the fact that they're using minions for this which up until now have never been exclusive. They're meant to be casually fun to collect (or incentives for product purchases).

What does having a billion gil get you? What does having the best gear and clearing raids get you? It's all about your own personal satisfaction, saying others have a "mental disorder" because they set their bars and goals differently to yours is utter lunacy. I do, as do lots of others, so that argument in itself is not valid. I am literally one of those idiots that has thrown money at them for almost everything and have more than 200 minions, none of the ones I'm missing are unobtainable but that will obviously be the case soon. I'll move on and accept it but a bit of understanding from people that like to act like tough guys on the internet would be cool since we're part of the same community and all.

I currently have every single "limited time" mount/minion, so if I spent the time/money I could possibly be 100% complete. I guess this minion/mount would be the one that stops my collecting. I can definitely make it to top 100 for solo, but there's no way I can spend enough time to get to top 10, and there is even less chance I'll be able to find a pvp team that would want to spend the time in the group queue.

And even if someone was super good at PvP, it'll be hard to get top 10 in both solo and ranked. In Aether, no player was in both top 10s this round, so even the best players have a hard time doing so. Basically even if you are top 10 material, it's possible that one colour variant is out of your reach unless you take a vacation month from work or something.

I guess collecting was fun while it lasted, but time to call it quits. I usually stop caring/playing once completion becomes impossible.

I don't see how this is that much different from people not being able to get Wind-up Bahamut and Wind-up Dalamud. I will never get those 2 minions and the many others from promotions like them and it is upsetting but at the same time I don't mind that much. The thing that makes these minions better than other limited time only minions is that it's skill based as well and not only time based.

And no, this is nothing like who can get good RNG better than others like the bird collecting example in the second post. It's who can do PvP better than others.

Just to clarify something, understanding someones position on their subjective wants is not a point of value to the topic. What is a point of argument though is claiming that they can't do something to their own game that goes against what you think should or should not be a thing. To the shortsighted individual, that point ends at "how does them adding it to PvP make us happy when most won't get it?" whereas the broader perspective continues to "why should they be obligated to cater to every little criticism against a decision some players may enjoy, but these loud individuals don't?"

I can sympathize with the idea of collection being stunted, but I'm also of the mind to know that it doesn't matter in the end. Are you going to add your collection efforts to your job resume? Are you going to use this as bragging rights when you play other games? Will your achievement of collecting bring you lasting value long after you stop playing this game? Chances are, the answer is either "no" or "not really". You at least understand that you'll move on, so point to you on it.

Collecting in a video game is a means to a direct end. There is no real inherent value, as opposed to collecting IRL, which at least has resale value usually. To you, the individual, the ability to collect every single thing to accomplish your goal may mean a lot, but that doesn't mean the devs are obligated to listen to you or those like you. Clearly, their decision to add those rewards to limited PvP achievements contradicts any made up notion that those goods are not "meant" or "designed" to be gotten in a specific manner that some folks have been spouting. Any meaningful argument against it is just typical complaining.

Again, I can sympathize, but the complaining about every little thing does get tiring. It'd be nice to see more people understand that and realize that not everything is going to go their way in a game that is not designed for you or me or anyone specific in every single way possible, thus understand the concept of compromise, but it's quite rare.

If you mean this in a way that you don't care to go that extra mile anymore, but don't mind the minions in general given your hobby, then welcome to the realist club. Where unreasonable expectations are expected to fail sooner or later. If you meant it as though you're trying to say screw minions entirely, given the previous hobby of collecting them, then lol.

Lol extra mile? More like extra thousand miles. You realise the amount of people that have a chance at both the solo and party minion can probably be counted on one hand? There is no amount of PvP even an above average PvPer can do to get both here.

I do agree things don't have to go my way nor is anyone obligated to care about the minion collectors, but you have to agree that we don't have to be happy about it, and we obviously don't have to pay/play if we aren't having fun right?

I don't really get it when people make this argument. Everything we do in this game is completely pointless, and probably some things/everything in life depending on your world view. I love verminion, I wouldn't mind. If you don't like verminion, you'd probably complain, and maybe quit. Would you like it if I came up to you and said who cares this game wont be on your job resume and won't bring you lasting value, just move on? I guess maybe you won't care, but you could see how some people would be extremely unhappy with this argument right? Just cause collecting minions is not fun to you doesn't mean someone doesn't care about it.

Makes you wonder what is ok to make a exclusive reward in PvP.

Dalamud, Cait Sith and Bahamut meant that all attempts at a complete collection are inherently futile. And the Yo-kai Watch minions the Primogs and Excalibur minions would be added to this list for players that joined later. So I'd still be collecting minions regardless.

The thing is, this was inevitable that they would add more time gated minions. The more a game gets updated, the more things are gonna be added and the more likely that it will be impossible to get all the things. There isn't much that could change that. A good example would be the Trading card games such as Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic, where the individual cards would number in the thousands at best and the millions at worst (plus some very rare cards as well)

The extra mile comment wasn't just about the PvP thing, rather it was about the whole "must have all of it" objective. Understatement, sure, but that's besides the point lol.

I most definitely agree with you on the matter that people don't have to be happy about it. There is, however, a distinct line between understanding something but being unhappy about it, and failing to understand but being unhappy about it. Just based on a number of the replies in this topic, the former seems more rampant.

The point of that is often to showcase how it doesn't matter. That despite it being about fun, some things are just not worth being up in arms about. The complaint about these minions would be stronger if the point of the game were centered around it, as in if your situation setup about the LoV expansion ever came true.

That happening, however, is next to never. It's a complete shift of how the game is marketed and played, which in the case of LoV, would be an act of suicide for the future of this game. We'd all have far more to complain about than simple PvP minions if that came to be lol.

You're right in that I probably would quit if it happened, though particularly centered around the other factors lol. You're also obviously correct in how that statement can infuriate some people, simply because it belittles their points. That's part of the intent though, to show that it's not as big of a deal as folks make it out to be and shut down subjective and (sometimes) illogical arguments. That this is not some act of betrayal, which some users seem to imply, but rather their own skewed views of what is and is not regarding this game.

The minions in this game are NOT centered around some ideological philosophy that they must always be available to everyone. Lots of evidence suggest otherwise, including what brought this forum topic up in the first place.

You are trying to use logic to a topic that shouldn't be logical. You can tell someone that they shouldn't be sad if their pet goldfish died either as it isn't logical. It's just that you'd be forgetting about the alternate point of view. Again, I must repeat, to you it's not important, but to someone else it is. No matter how much logic you throw at it, it won't change a thing because liking to play this game is inherently illogical.

And I'd like to add, I've seen someone quit the game because they couldn't get a particular rare triple triad card after thousands of trial runs. And I would agree with them 100% in doing so as they are the sole judge of what is fun or not. In this case, a large group of people do not find adding two almost impossible to get minions fun, so it is 100% in their right to complain/quit, and you can see how someone wouldn't be happy with someone else telling them that this is not the right way to have fun in this game.

It's hard to empathize with you high-end minion collectors when you kept encouraging SE to gate more minions behind physical products, at the point where someone who starts collecting now would have to spend $380 on physical products.

Implying it's our fault when there are 100% digital items too, such as clothing, furnishing, dyes etc...

The PVP thing is quite discouraging for collectors, but I guess it's the best excuse to take it easy from now on.

I have NEVER before seen a pay2play with ingame shop to that extend how we have it now!
The number of items is even more than most free2play games have...
And same with all those gatings behind EXCLUSIVE content.

I agree. Honestly, when we had maintenance for purely PvP fixes I was enraged. Stop pushing PvP so hard, either look into why people don't really do it or just axe it. PvE is strong here, pour the resources there.

I adressed this point in the response you quoted, but that point applies to the ENTIRE game. Everything in this game is "pointless" if you like at it from that perspective, collecting minions is in fact no more pointless or important than getting world first. Are people putting "World First A12S clear" on their CVs? I would hope not.

How about the exclusive rewards they've had for season 1 and 2? Was their massive outcry that we needed more incentivising rewards in PVP? If their objective was to get people to play, why not add more minions that are redeemable via wolf marks like they did with the cheerleader?

What's the point of a collection if nothing is rare in it...?

People knew such rewards are coming since they said they will change rewards but now alot are complaining instead of saying "gratz to top10 sick minion". Why ppl want everything (in a easy way). There are so many exclusive items that u cant get why complain about this (like going to fanfest irl gg ez). Wolf mark rewards would be terrible ppl would go into pvp like in the past and afk for tomes/marks.

Well thanks to preorder minions and all those merchandise minions that I missed because I did not play at that time I would never had a complete collection either way (and it irks me..) but I still had said to me that I will try to collect those ingame minions that are included after I started playing..well seems like this aim is done too..

This game has a variety of content to do and people do it out of their own reasons. Some people will try to bang their head against the hardest content in the game for the reward/accomplishment..others love to just socialize with others, some like to collect things...I would be okay if the minions would need a high amount of wolf marks because it would be a reward for long time playing PVP and at the same time I can work towards it on my own pace...(so a win/win for both sides..people play PVP longer if they want the minion and we can take our time to do so)

They now take their limited time to create a exclusive mount and minion (and its recolors) for only a very small population..yet its somehow not possible to implement the bunny suit for men much faster..

I am not sure how this is even good for the true PVPers...I mean now people will try to get at least into the top 100 which means that you will have lots of people that will play this only for the reward and not for PVP itself..maybe this will even keep some of the more dedicated PVPers from getting a good rank in the season by loosing lots of matches thanks to these people..

I kinda wonder how people would feel if they restrict their content? How about making an exclusive hair style that only drops a certain amount of time? How about only a certain amount of raiders can get the new mount or even the gear? I mean its just an ingame item? :) And if you want it you just need to git gud or something..

There are some hunters, who are here since the beginning, who have the 2 legacy mounts, the preorder and collector editions mount&minions & bahamut & dalamud, the shantotto minion from the FFXI event, the golem from dragon quest.
I'm one of those.
It is true that as today, neither collection, minions, mounts, both, cannot be 100% completed by the great majority of players because there are some that are no longer possible to get.
I mean yeah, unless you are a legacy players and you never stopped playing the game since the start and did all the seasonals events, and bought all soundtracks & plushies and shit, you cannot do this collection.
But I'm one of those, and we are a few and some.
As today I have 208/210 minions and 56/69 mounts and all those I am missing I can get, anytime.
Whatever our reasons for farming minions & mounts are, may it be because we think it's cute, because of OCD, or just because we like it, this is huge for us.
Make an achievement saying "play 1000 feast matchs for this minion", I will do it. But the way they did this is really different and hardcore on another level because it's time limited and we have to be good, we have to compete against each other (hunters), and against pro pvp players.
Someone told me that if I got so many already it's because I put a lot of effort in it and I can go the extra mile for the Feast season 3 rewards, and it's not really wrong.
I will do it, at least I will try to do it. From 3.45 to 3.55 I will most likely play PVP a HUGE LOT, and maybe I will get some rewards, but getting the 4 rewards (top 10 solo and top 10 group) will be really really difficult.
I will be really bummed if this fails because it will mean that my collection can no longer be achieveable to 100%, BUT, at least I would have tried and if can't do it this will maybe relieve me of some stress, but also take off a huge part of why I like this game.
Some people aim to be world first or server first on raid content, me and some others aim to be server first m&m collectionist.

I don't see the problem to be honest, the ones putting the most effort into something should get the best results and rewards too.
It's a typical case of equality of opportunity vs equality of outcome.
And the latter one sucks. It really sucks hard.

They really REALLY want people to PVP.

As a person who enjoys PvP... I would be okay with title rewards. I think that would be a fun and fair way to 'show off' my achievement. Not that I'm one of those people expecting FFXIV to be a WoW clone, but WoW has offered title rewards for PvP seasons for a long time and I really think this is the way to go... You get to show off your achievement without having to constantly update your glamour.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, even if all the collectors stepped up and became champion PvPers, dominating both the solo and team brackets - as long as there's more than ten of them (and there ARE, bet your life on it), some of them are going to miss out. It's not exactly complex math we're talking about here. This isn't a problem that can be solved by gittin' gud. Collectors that have managed to stay up-to-date from the beginning have finally hit their wall. The exclusivity of these items is simply too high.

I feel for these guys, even the so-called whiners.

I'm not against exclusivity per se, but the lack of consistency from SE really bothers me.

The SCOB titles, the Gordias mount, and the Midas minion are all still obtainable even though their respective PVE "seasons" are over and the encounters have been nerfed via echo, overgearing, and skill changes. Raids see their lockouts removed, allowing you to spam floors to obtain gear that used to be gated by weekly waits. EX Trial mounts like the ponies and birds get drop rate increases. It's fairly obvious the devs don't care about making exclusive PVE rewards, so why is it different for PVP? Why should PVP get this type of rewards when no other content in the game does?

I also don't think it's fair to compare the Feast rewards to other now-unobtainable rewards like Yokais or RL purchases - those weren't limited to small number of players per datacenter. As long as you were playing during the right time window, you were able to obtain them. The ranking system ensures most players won't get these items even if they're actively participating.

What about the gaelkitten cap that you only get for going to fanfest irl which isn't even in your country? Sure not a minion or mount but still a ingame item that I want and which is limited in some way.

OP here. Following on from the suggestions that I just need to work for them, well I haven't played Feast since it first came out, so I played 25 games last night. We won 3 of them (12%).

I tried my absolute best, but this is not where my skills lie. I'm sure that given time I will get better, but right now it's just resulting in a lot of other players being very upset and shouting abuse at me. I explained to a few that I was trying my best and I know I'm not very good at PvP, but if the only way I'm going to get that minion is to keep playing with the aim of getting better... what choice do I have? Not even sure where to start with the party queue either as none of the people I normally play with have any interest in PvP, but I'll come back to that.

I'm sure people will suggest that I shouldn't play PvP if I'm that bad, but then I was also suggested to play and "git gud" if I want the minion. So which is it? I don't mind being in it for the long game, but not sure I can handle the amount of annoyed players/abuse I'm getting in the process...

Read the "Season 3 Getting Started Guide", particularly the one written by King Stefan, but try to study all of them. Make sure your pvp skills are bound in easy to hit places. I could give you a lot of general tips but those guides will get you started.

Also for people raging, I've been called some pretty amusingly vile things before. Just laugh at them for being so mad at a video game and work on improving yourself.

Honestly? Nothing. Not as a one-time-ever reward. If you could work towards the rewards by earning Wolf Marks or through an X number of Wins achievement, it would be fine. Even if the rewards were available for each season, at least you could have a chance at ever getting them.

It seems silly to me to waste dev time on something that only 10 people per data center will ever have. For event items, if you're there for the event and put in the effort, you can get all the rewards. Even for Forum Contests, with their exclusive prizes, if you enter enough of them you can eventually get all of them. Feast rewards are the only things in the game that you can put your heart and soul into earning and never get them.

I am not really a collector.

But reading about this just rubs me the wrong way.

If you cant complete the set, you can as good as throw all away!

I'm a tad bit confused. People don't like collectables on the mogstation, nor the exclusivity of hardwork in game? A collector doesn't need to have everything to have a collection. There's some very cool things that are out of my reach in this game, but it's more of a put up or shut up situation instead of RIP.

You would have thought they would have learned from the non existant PVP lines at fan fest. No one wanted to do PVP. They were begging for players. Adding one time rewards to it is only going piss people off, case in point.

I wanted to address this directly. I'm an avid PvP player of this game. I fell in love with it despite all the imperfections and lack of popularity. I play it for the love of battle and recently started making videos of my best plays for the fun of it. Rewards are nice, but they're not the reason I enjoy PvP. I was even irritated when SE made the ADS mount I repeatedly asked for into a PvP reward, but it didn't make or break PvP for me.

I'm shooting down your statement directly. PvP happens, and there's a small but dedicated number of players enjoying it, with more curious but hesitant to approach it, and statements like yours are discouraging and unhelpful. I understand incentive might be nice to attract new people, and I will agree only with the fact that one time rewards aren't a good thing to motivate with, but some of us who PvP and enjoy it don't need the incentives. It's simply one of the things we love about the game.

That said, and with all due respect, if only now you want to PvP, just for some mount or a minion, please just save yourself the time and trouble. I mean, if you want it bad enough to fight and improve and rise up as an FFXIV PvPer, sure, go ahead. But if it's purely for the shiny new toy, then you'll wash your hands of it and never bother again, there are many of us that will practically guarantee you won't get it.

And I don't even know what it is or want it.
