Maybe, but these guys don't seem to let it ruin their fun.

or her fun, either.

See ... she's smiling.
EVERYONE here wants stuff. They just don't want YOUR stuff getting into the game, each for their own reasons I suppose. Just because nobody liked your ideas doesn't mean they don't want things added to this game. I know for a fact MOST people DON'T want to be grinding through it all because that's boring. However, right now grinding is the most effective way to go about it when not doing a Behest. Raptors anyone?
Also, "Derp" is a very popular term in the recent months/this last year. I'm sure Japan has it's own online memes, so Yoshi used one in a humorous tone and the translators picked Derp as the translation because it IS popular. I know I laughed when I saw it. I didn't look down on Yoshi-P. Sheesh. Honestly, I think the only reason you decided to pick that out of the letter to complain about is because you couldn't find anything else to complain about in the letter. BUT you had to complain about SOMETHIN', so you probably figured you'd might as well make fun of the translators.
I think it would've been funnier had he shown the male Roegadyn, then you clicked it you see a big "PSYCH" on top with a male Miqo'te in a swimsuit, then he's like ok trust me this time, click again and see a female Roegadyn and female lalafell playing in the water with "improvement right?" on top. Finally he's like ok ok click on it again and you see the pics that were on the first click of this letter lol.
That's just me though, I'm pretty sure they have the models worked out for the male/female of those races so this would've been an amusing time to reveal them even if they have no plans to release them for a few updates. But I'm not wrong when they did make mention about releasing them right lol?
Ether Way, gotta love Yoshi's spirit and humor^^ It's rare you ever see a dev with emotion if at all on any mmo >.< Regardless of choices he's made or making with the game, it's always refreshing to see him act and talk like a human rather than a "Robot" like devs from other mmo's :P
Good letter! I can't wait for patch day.
My lalafell is going to look awesome in his thong.. er swimtrunks /chuckle
Wait so, is the guildleve reform in this patch or the next one? I'm hoping this one, but more changes coming in 1.19. :3
It sounds like maybe they're holding back a little on the alteration of guildleves until 1.19? Sounds like a good decision to me if that's the case.
Sounds like we haven't had the full patch listing yet...
I'd have to guess it was the translator that added the extra flare to the letter. It would be pretty awesome if it was translated as literally as possible (while still making sense), though.
Ponies and rainbows!
A common expression around here used to be "Well I got along just fine in FFXI without [said feature], so there's no reason to implement it."
It is this kind of mentality which inspired such sentiments within me. From my perspective, it seems like a lot of people would be happy with less rather than more. And their reasoning: "just because". (that's their only reason or something).
As for the lack of professionalism on Yoshi's part, I was giving him the benefit of the doubt and casting the blame on the translators. But perhaps the fault lies squarely with Yoshi? Derp is such an infantile turn of phrase, hardly befitting to one so powerful and esteemed as Yoshi.
FFXIV is a very artistic enterprise... and to have it sullied with such asinine verbiage - well, you can scarcely blame me for thinking it inappropriate.
Yes because game development is such a proper and noble profession. One must keep only the highest of moral and maturity standards while developing video games. We can't have anything less than the most professional of developers on all video games.
And then we have games like Shadow of the Damned which tend to be one giant boner joke while still being a great game. Games like the Saint's Row series don't take themselves that seriously and are pretty awesome. Some of the most fun games out there have been pretty silly, hardly mature and pretty damn funny.
Why do you speak in second-person like Gollum from Lord of the Rings?
Either you have a severe case of split-personality disorder or you're just vouching for a collective you cannot truly claim to speak for.
In any case, I explained myself, like, in the post right before your tirade about me, just in case you're curious as to what I meant or why I had such an impression.
It's only fair for me to make such an assumption , after all. If all you hear day after day is something along the lines of "please do not add stuff to FFXIV because it's not needed" then you can hopefully appreciate where I am coming from.
While I can appreciate Yoshi's candour, I am not particularly enamoured with his display of coarseness.
The demographic for Final Fantasy games is much more intellectual than your average gaming community. That is why we do not have jump or swim. Because such things are beneath us. We also do not need voice-overs, because you see, reading is a higher art form. These low-brow games of which you speak, I never much fancied them to tell you the honest truth, and I dare say I never will. Personally, I shudder to think what will happen to the moral institution that is Final Fantasy if it becomes so corrupted to follow in pursuit of those games for a "quick buck".
This use of the word 'derp' is a definite departure from the norm, and I would caution we not tread too far down this path.
It's just not very "Final Fantasy".
I thought it was a female Roe when you clicked. I was like "shut up shut up shut up... Oh..."
Anyways, letter sounded good. Can't wait to try on the bathing suits. Hopefully lots of different colors!
Love the derping part. I'm really excited to be returning to Eorzea soon!
I'm probably speaking on my own behalf but I am sure some will agree with me. I don't think people meant that we are fine without it or having FFXIV be like FFXI. I think at the moment, the way FFXIV is at, it would be nice for a NEWER game to be at least FFXI quality in gameplay and community.. etc. I believe the two upcoming updates (1.18 and 1.19) is getting very close to the same feeling we have with FFXI. Not saying FFXIV should be exactly like FFXI, I'm just talking about feelings and the sense of familiarity. Of course once FFXIV get to where FFXI is at... I am sure everyone is opened up to new implements and features that other MMO have but yet stick with the FF ways that we enjoy most.
I know how hard it is to pick up someone's work and having to turn it around in a short amount of time with CLIENTS (us players) constantly behind your back wishing to change this and that while you already have a plan.
Well if you can think of a better way to convey such concepts, I would love to hear it. But alas I am not Shakespeare so until then you'll have to excuse my not-entirely-perfect manner of speech. Sorry we can't all be perfect like you.
What I am most afraid of is the departure of Final Fantasy from its roots. You see, like a tree, Final Fantasy has roots. And, like a tree, it may bend toward the light a little, but stray too far and it will break.
And as the saying goes, if a tree falls in the forest...
We must uphold the sacred institution of 'Final Fantasy' at all costs, even if it means omitting the terms "derp" from our vocabularies. Whatever it takes.
I'm not agreeing with giftforce's whining about the use of the colloquialism "derp", but I must point out that nowhere in the original Japanese text of Yoshi's letter are the words "derp" or "ponies" found.
That said, I am glad they are in the English translation. They are used properly.
I wanted to say about the bathing suits being introduced I liked the idea but why do the males have to have those retarded chest straps? Also don't forget to go ahead and make them for the male Miqote and the female Roegadyn. Good job on with this patch it has even a bit more content then I expected it to have, hopefully you can give us an estimate when we can expect to see 1.19 come our way, like 1 month or less?
... ... ... ... ... Where's the Elezen female swimsuit model D:
(Square Enix and its affiliates are in no way liable for raid wipes resulting from adventurers entering boss fights armored in bathing suits.)
You guys can't tell a parody when you see one?
I am doing an impersonation of the typical FF fanatic who tries to sabotage any addition to this game on the basis of "it's not Final Fantasy enough."
You see the irony?
When I (and others) have suggested adding voice overs, the response has been a resounding "learn to read", "final fantasy games are intellectual", "this isn't some derpy WoW game".
The same thing with jump, really.
So it's just really funny (from my perspective) when the same community has a positive reaction to Yoshi when he uses the word derp and so on (not that he specifically used it, as it so turns out). It seems ironic and borderline hypocritical from my vantage point.
Ahaha.
(Well I amused myself at least... maybe you had to be there)
You know, we don't fawn over the male character models so I don't know why the female ones deserve to get so ... objectified.
Not really sure what the point of this letter was, but communication never hurts.
By the way, did anyone notice his My Little Pony reference? lol
The translator added that reference. There is no mention of ponies, rainbows, or the word 'derp' in Yoshida's original Japanese letter.
Personally, I'd rather they would keep the translation as close as possible. These embellishments come off as cheesy and pedestrian IMHO.
