Very weird comments, a bit tone deaf to me. Does he think losing the ears for a higher number of really bad looking hairstyles is something anyone would seriously desire?

I don’t understand why they didn’t simply unlock the current hairstyles for hrothgar across all faces and maybe add 1-2 unique styles? These god awful wigs are so bad it’s a joke and I don’t know how Yoshi P who always has such high quality standards thought this was okay?
The only new style I think works is the Snow one because it makes sense the ears could be under the bandana but still, yikes
With all due respect, modders can make a thing look good and get the best out of what they have to work with. That doesn't mean the programming in the backend is sound and it can just be carried over with copy + paste. (This is not an attack on modders, you are doing the best you can!) This quote sounds more like this is about adressing a core problem and making it work with the system better. A mod only has to work on your end, it certainly makes a difference when it has to be like this for everyone. As someone who worked in a game's QA and Level Design for a while (not on SE games), what sounds like a simple problem is often a symptom of a complex issue, and therefore what looks like a simple solution might break something you wouldn't expect. Or at least not achieve any actual improvement.
"I don't mind" if they decide to change the ears structure and they pick the long hair one like what male Viera gonna have now, or Wind Caller. That "kinda" covers up the earless.
But what they pick currently is just a short hair that fully shows the earless... :(
How they skipped Windcaller is beyond me :( It looks SO SO good on Hrothgar!!!
Fine. Give me my (or them, if you're referring to modders) dued respect.
It's a model, there isn't backend programming. It a few pooygons and a texture and there was already someone like you pulling random excuses out of nowhere and inventing scenarios to justify square.
Square doesn't need you to defend them nor do they need you to make up excuses. They're a multi-million dollar company who could have easily afforded to pay a sngle dev for 4-5 weeks to adjust a few models.
This isn't rocket science. They are not a small, struggling company. They had 3+ years of record profits.
Yeah, I'm not buying their excuses anymore, especially after the housing mess and this. I'm done being Mr. Nice Guy. My respect for the dev team is on a downward slide. If they can't respect the players at this point, then they won't get any in return. Not from me, anyway.
How does everyone feel, now that this thread surpassed the Viera/Hrothgar complaint megathread in replies? x3
Doubt it'll surpass views and it'll stay more relevant after this but it's generally impressive how organized this campaign for ears is ^w^
Edit: Also, that thread got roughly +200(?) posts in response to this dev hullabaloo too so it's a win-win all around for both threads in regard to viewership ^^
It seems like just as was the case for Viera and Hrothgar in general, the hair for Hrothgar may have been pushed out because they knew that after 3 years of nothing, we deserved SOMETHING. And he said he's aware of the fact everyone wants them, which I assume means it's not just the English-speaking community that was upset. We don't know how this works on the side of the server. Keep in mind they had to add an entire new FACE to midlanders to get the WoL facial hair instead of just adding a stubble option to the aesthetician. I saw comments claiming that he said that's because of a server limitation, though there was no source so not sure how true that is.
I guess my point is he already said if that's really what we want, we'll get it in the longrun. There wasn't much ambiguity about that (unlike the preliminary patch notes not mentioning the aesthetician am i right fellas?) so your voices are heard, yeah? I think that's a win for ya'll
Considering Hrothgar's player base is significantly low, it's refreshing to see the amount of people who spoke up about the unfairness of the situation.
I still think the overall discussion would have been more suited in my thread, considering this thread's OP only discussed the currently announced Hrothgar hairstyles... Whereas mine questions the slow pace, lack of promised race-specific hair and how we need more communication - but for all we know maybe the moderator has been looking at our comments.
Either way, it's relieving they saw our pleas and have taken it into account. Everyone did very well :)
Edit: The Viera/Hrothgar complaint megathread did blow up roughly 400-500 comments since the Hrothgar's hairstyle announcement.
I mean, he was laughing at them when they were shown, so i think he knows how people would react, but gotta play the innocent pity card. Now time for everyone to forget this happened and wait patiently for another 3 years only to get more half assed implementation. It’s a bit scary how similar this is to the healer situation. “This will take some time so please wait until x” and then it’s please wait, please wait, please wait, and nothing is ever done.
Damn y'all, you know you done goofed when even Vahlnir is done with SE's shit. I suppose its nice to see people waking up, on one hand it feels nice to see people not blindly praising the devs and acknowledging the faults, but on the other hand its a bit sad to see the game slowly take this downward slope, and that it took this long for people to recognize it.
There is no "we don't know how this works server-side". All information related to how characters look is entirely client-side. It's trivial to figure this out even without modding the game by simply observing the data sent to and from the servers. This is why breaking the tos and modding in this game is so absurdly easy to begin with.
In fact one of the many reasons why 1.0 was so laggy back in the day was because many menus were server-side for no reason (which was changed when they literally redid both the front and backends)
I've pretty much given up at this point. I held out hope for viera hairstyles and everything for years, but at this point, with the direction this game seems to be heading, and I am talking about everything... this Hrothgar hair quality, cutting of racial features, what people are saying about jobs, etc.. I really just don't know anymore. I want to see how the new story arc(s) turn out, and the graphical update, but yeah..
Ok, So just because of a comment made by the translator. I want to reiterate this for people who are looking in on the thread.
We aren't asking for this to be done instantly. We're upset, we're angry. And we're disappointed... 3 years of nothing have produced nothing. But we can wait. We've been doing that this whole time haven't we? We just want to see something come out of this that people actually enjoy. Rather than a half-baked hairstyle...
We're asking for things like... Show us works in progress. Get fan feedback whilst working on the product. The whole reason that games have Beta tests is to get feedback on how things work. If it's too mechanically intensive. If this bug is present. Etc. If you want to know what the fans want. Which according to the rules you set for yourself after the failure of 1.0. You do. You have to communicate with us. We may sound spiteful from this, which yes. I imagine some people are. But its because we want the game to flourish.
Because I get it! It takes time. Modders did it, it took them a lot of time on their free time, and they're not paid for it. You who are paid for it likely have other responsibilities to worry about and that's fine... just as long as you worry about this when the time comes and not throw something together. because at this rate...
This is going to be 1.0 all over again... Endwalker will be the 1.0 of the modern era of FFXIV. We can't let standards drop... It's like cooking... You can't produce good food if your standards are low. I don't think I've seen A SINGLE PERSON on social media or reddit commend the hairstyles for looking good. That should say something big about this entire situation.
We aren't gaslighting. We aren't guilt tripping. We're stating the facts as we see them. We are being completely patient compared to the people who spammed (CrabEmoji) MALE VIERA (CrabEmoji) in the devstreams.
We're willing to be patient. We just want to see results on the course, because if we don't. We drop standards. And if we drop standards. The game fails. Because who is to say it stops here?
As a Hrothgar player, these hairstyles just really cemented the feeling that to the devs, Hrothgar players are second class citizens. With the additional comments in todays livestream, I have a tiny bit more faith, but not much. It really feels like they waited 3 years and then quickly rushed out these styles. I would MUCH rather they took the time and effort to make the styles look good and keep the ears (resulting in a lot less styles more infrequently) than rushing a larger number of them faster. We had to wait SO long for literally anything, and then the stuff we got was rushed. It felt really, really bad watching him laugh as he announced them, knowing that the first bit of new customisation for Hrothgar in so long was an actual joke to them. I appreciate that the head shape is unique, and everything stated today, and that it'll take more work, but we'd rather wait and get stuff that is of a quality matching the other races than just get rushed and continued to be treat as second class citizens.
As a continuation from my last post I've said to my friends multiple times. I'm happy to wait patches and patches until hairstyles are done. I don't mind if these are added bit by bit. But I... We just want to see a result that looks good and that both us and Devs can look back and think 'That was worth it in the end'. We don't want to feel like a joke race anymore.
You all did wait! That's the problem! Almost three years you all waited! This is what you got for all that time. Maybe by 2026 you guys can get some hairstyles that include ears!
You know entire games can be built in LESS time than it took them to come out with a handful of styles for hrothgar?
It's not that they think we're stupid- Maybe when the XIV team goes to get player feedback, they have to wear a blindfold and pick a number from One to One Million so then Chad Girthquakes horrible suggestion to add 2-B hair for M. Hrothgar for memes is chosen- But if the dev team get's a number that doesn't have a suggestion, it's another 2-3 years back to the drawing board. Do not pass go, do not collect good hairstyles or 200$ and instead add another terrible looking outfit. - atleast that's my guess
And as far as the modders go- they have some AMAZING creations- and it hurts to see the hairs and features we are stuck with in FFXIV, then go see the hairs and features the modders have created (which are often incredible) then told we cannot have them & it's against the rules.
Just add a new hairstyle contest. And pick 10 winners per category- make categories for Male & Female Miqote, Viera, Lalafell, Elezen, Roegadyn, Humans, Au Ra. That way the focus is creating hairstyles specifically for those races & genders that then can be added for everyone at a later time- because trying to make universal hairstyles can often lead to VERY boring & disappointing results -gestures broadly at the current hairstyles-
I'd like to see the data they look at to decide what hairs to implement- I'm still waiting for Yshtola's hair to be added to F. Viera-
But I also think they should just design unique hairs for Viera & Hroth so that they keep their beastial uniqueness.
I can't find a suggestions thread about adding new emotes to umbrellas, or the punch emote or an eating egg emote. Where do they decide to add this stuff? Because it looks like more people want new hairs/ new housing features, new character customization- not if they can eat an egg or not. They could be working on updating the character creator and making it more versatile and on par with what modders can dish out.
Just imagine the features we could have if the time put into story was also put into hairstyles/ character features- I think it's just as important since the story involves our characters and we see alot of up-close encounters with them.
The thing is, i could kind of understand if this was the work of an indie company(no meme intended this time), but this is a literal billion dollar company, that has seen supposedly the most player retention and sales highs than ever before. So why are we seeing less effort being put in and just…overall bad decisions? Between the hrothgar hairs, content overall, jobs being gutted and cut down…what is going on? At this point i’m starting to believe the factor here really is Yoshi P just being more invested in FF16 and just kind of done with this game. The laughter at Hroth players was essentially the nail in the coffin.
This game, from what I've heard, is pretty much SE's only big moneymaker. It just feels like the more popular this game has gotten, the worst it gets. I feel like they think people will just stick around, because it's FFXIV. That players won't question design decisions, because it's Yoshida, or whatever else.
Absolutely true. It's not like building an encounter that can literally take months or an entire expansion that takes two years...it's just giving us some hairstyles. 3 years and this is what they have to show for it? Inexcusable.
How much you guys wanna bet that if there wasn't such a large uproar over this situation, then they would have left it as is?
Billion yen, maybe.
That said them charging 40 bucks for a whale mount should've been more than enough to hire one or two full-time devs considering the average dev gets paid aproximately half that hourly in Japan. A little more or a little less depending on position and benefits.
Which is part of my issue. I know people who fanta 5-6 times a month. This isn't a money issue. It never was a money issue. It isn't even a code issue because, again, this is client side nonsense.
This is "we decided to ignore the problem". This is what caused 1.0's developmemt hell. All problems could be fixed later. All features can be added later. All bugs, graphical issues and glitches would be fixed later.
It's concerning because it isn't just hair. Housing, PVP, instances/dungeons. Everything will be fixed later. Everything will be ironed out later.
I played 1.0. I quite literally abandoned my account because of how bad it was but when I saw the effort put into ARR I decided it was worth returning even if it meant buying it again. What I'm seeing is similar to what I saw back then.
Of course it isn't as bad because the game at least /functions/... for the time being.
FFXIV (2.0) is the game that dragged SE out of the mud and saved it from destined bankruptcy literally. And the overwhelming credits for that go to Yoshi P. clearly, which explains also why they let him rise so fast in the company ranks up to the position he is in at the moment.
But yeah, the big reason for XIV getting more casual and tries to appeal to more and more audiences is probably cause shareholders like when stuff grows and XIV showed extreme potential.
If you want to observe this btw you can google for the Square Enix stock and look at how the graph goes up and down on different dates. And then look up when expansions hit and XIV patches and keep in mind that this isn't the XIV stock but the whole big japanese gaming company. XIV has a huge gigantic influence on the stock.
I'm glad Yoshi-P addressed the wig issue. I'll be expecting my new beastial hairstyles in the mail by 6.2, the latest.
I took the full translation from Reddit, thanks to the translator :
It seems that the issue will take a lot of time to be fixed.Quote:

They have record profits. They can hire the people. They have had more than enough time and not only that but they were the ones who introduced hrothgar and then made no plans on how to improve them after 36 months.
My brother in Christ square, you introduced the Hrothgar. This isn't "oh it's hard". This is incompetence.
If you measure it by market cap, you could say dollars.
Yeah, you can see its contribution here, if you flip to page 9. It groups the operating income over 3 subcategories but I'd be interested to see if that's broken down by subcategory somewhere else; either way, they're attributing the rise in operating income within this category primarily to XIV. My guess would be XIV is outdoing the other subcategories in terms of operating income in relation to its share of sales revenue.
So if they're like "this is really hard to make" why did they recant on the statement of Hrothgar getting racial specific hairstyles then? Same goes for viera? Like...you released new hairs almost ever major patch while v/h were still begging for hairstyles to actually make our characters look unique from one another :/
3 years to get it together and you still couldn't do that......these are just riddled with excuses like....ugh. yes, I'm glad we got new hairs, but not happy at it with the cost of my ears :T. It also doesn't look like this was something that was well thought out anyway is the problem. It looks like it was all haphazardly thrown together....
I'm still waiting to see if they have even unlocked the hair from the faces.
As no where does it say it has.
I'm expecting that the only options that willl be available from the aesthetician are the wigs and then the bangs and sideburns which come with said hair styles.
Even the facial features image was that of the character creation.
Here's hoping that when they're upgrading the character model textures they're actually rebuilding the entire system from the ground up so that they can add further customisation features more easily in the future...
It's a bit too late now, though they really should have not bothered adding any new playable races until they had implemented a more streamlined process. It's poor form to complain about 'extra work' when they frequently embrace inefficient methods of development.
I also wonder where they're getting their feedback if they believe a sizeable number of players wanted the 2B hairstyle available for male characters. Far more people have spoken out over the years in favour of more masculine looking hairstyles for male characters.
Maybe it's time for Yoshi-P to ditch his female lalafell and female raen and be forced to play a male character for a while. He kept saying he wanted to see Hrothgar added because a bestial playable race was a desire of his - so why isn't he playing one?
That's kind of where he lost me.
He's saying he made it clear from the start they couldn't add any at all, but we have the official LL translation saying they would and every now and then (like during the art of Shadowbringers stream) they'd come out and say it'd be a while longer?
So which is it?
