Like how the post lists K'tyaka Nunh, and later lists J'nanhgo Tyaka? I suppose it's possible for a Miqo'te to join a different tribe in some circumstances. That being said, Maimhov as your full surname is only your father's given name without the tribal prefix. He could easily be A'maimhov Nunh.

Yes. My name in 1.0 was Dobenn Shezad, but Eyriwaen Zirhmusyn would fit better.

I might. My in-game name is Mishugashu Hawkwind, because I've always been Mishugashu in all Final Fantasies, and I just made up a last name. But according to this naming convention (I'm Lalafell Plainsfolk), my first name is my whole name! Mishu Gashu. I might like changing it to that.

Funny thing his how my name for my Midlander Hyur is nearly spot on lore-wise. I just need to write it out and provide some explanation.

When I created this guy, the first name "Jacien" was originally parts my Xbox Live GamerTag rearranged. I realized that it's close to Jason/Jace which is of Greek origin (not exactly Anglo Saxon, Celtic, and Briton) but it's similar to Jaxon/Jayden which are popular names medieval names. I assume there had to be a few people named Jason during the medieval era, right?

Plus, regarding real life, I learned from my mother I was to be originally named Jason before she changed her mind at the last second to something else, entirely. So I'm super comfortable with the first name how it is.

Now for the surname, "Visenad", this was actually a rearrangement of parts of my full name. Following these conventions, this really doesn't pertain to a profession or an outward feature (unless the vicing of nads is a profession). But with the magical power of imagination I can say that my character is from a distant location (a town or community) called Visenad.

I'm also writing a little background for my character for the heck of it that is lore-friendly to Eorzea (and not recycled trope garbage like avenging a clan or something). I'm even on working on incorporating direct relatives! After all, as a Legacy player, I can make so many characters!

That's pretty much it. This is the amount of thought I put into something so trivial when I could've just created a character called "Huge Jackedman" or something. I think I am going into the dark-side of RPing. :P

Also, I hope people know or are told later that you don't have to make your character's name follow these conventions. It's merely knowledge to have if you want to immerse yourself further when playing in Eorzea. :)

EDIT: This Advanced mode of editing makes adding bold/colors a lot easier! I never knew about it!

When I created my character and entered the world of Eorzea, Ferne had just posted a list of Lalafell Male naming conventions on the localization board (or somewhere else). I was originally going to make a Dunesfolk male, but as the conventions on that were not immediately available, and I prefer lore accuracy to personal choices, I went with Plainsfolk male instead. So far, I am pleased with the results.

The thing is...Hestern Nestern sounds a little harsh for a Lalafell name, I'm just now realizing. It follows the conventions, technically speaking Hes TERN Nes TERN (AB CB)...BUT WHAT IF IT ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH?

The names of my characters aren't changing but then again, I named my Lala with the naming conventions in mind and my Rogy's name has personal significance to me. =]

I really like this kind of lore to draw from, but my FF14 characters are based on my FF11 characters, which really aren't very dissimilar from the standards for these races. If I played a Galka with a Hume name, I would "translate" it to Roegadyn(sp?), but in practice, I play two Humes with fairly Hume-ish names anyway. The fact that they draw a little more from Italy or west Asia keeps to the general idea while being somewhat unique.

I'd leave mine as is, because there's a whole other naming convention from something else behind it.
However! Mules and alts... fair game :D

Actually, no. My name's German so I'll just change my back story to that I was found by Highlanders in a shipwreck off the coast of Ul'dah. Named so in an attempt to emulate the translated naming conventions as they understood it.

There back story done. Now I can role play like a real boy.

I don't plan on changing it at all. In fact, I'm keeping my character as close as possible to my 1.0 version. Maybe just a slight change in hair color (the tone of red).

The yous and yours were meant to be directed at the character, not you personally. This is where one and ones are supposed to come in. :p Silly me.

My name already fits in perfectly with the rule of Plainsfolk Lalafels, though unfortunately I am Dunesfolk, and I don't feel like changing races, so I might just leave it as it is. It doesn't stray too much from Dunesfolk rules, though, but it isn't perfect.

Going full white? I love having highlights in just so I can be different. Especially the hairstyle I used, not many people used highlights. :P

I used highlights to make it darker and I will use highlights again when I change it. I would not. SE has an unhealty relationship with the Apostrophe which i find annoying. I do not find it in anyway interesting, mysterious or special, randomly spliting a word to drop an apostrophe in. I'm suspecting that the japanese consider the apostrophe as a way to make up sounds in a foreign (to the japanese language) way, however the apostrophe is used mainly for contractions (which naturally fits their pronounciation) both in French and English. According to Wiki, German and Spanish barely use it at all.

Most people will simply skip both the prounounciation and typing of the apostrophe for words SE made, denoting the burden it creates, as small as it may be.

After reading the Lore threads I was tempted to create a name based on the great info, but alas I use a progressive naming convention that carries through all my MMO games ive ever played and I can't break myself from it lol...

I agree that they should tone down the apostrophe usage, but at the same time my name goes back to naming conventions older than FF itself - those of the Dragonriders of Pern - in which case the apostrophe is involved in contraction.

Also, if you consider the full pronunciation of the sounds used for tribe labels (in my case, Yah) the extra letters are removed, and the whole name contracted, making the apostrophe more fitting for Seekers of the Sun. For Keepers of the Moon, they seem more like a way to designate which part of the male's name is a number tag.

But I think the "stern" is nice as it is. After all it does mean "star" in German.

Back when the game first came out I tried looking back at mithra names to get a name that fits. I came up with Nala Apaloneh cuz it sounded like a mithraish name but after seeing this it now dosent fit my seeker kitty and is in fact more a dirty basement cat name (Keeper of the moon). I decided to mess around with it a little and came up with R'Nala Apaloneh (Ruh-Na-La App-Ah-Lon-Ah) which would make my father R'apaloneh Nunh (Ruh-App-Ah-Lon-Ah Noon) and try as I might it just seems off to me now :/ at least in my last name. I am so used to my name now after the 2 years playing that im not sure i can physically change it to fit conventions but kinda just did this for lore's sake and for kicks.

Also, why are you assuming that these apostrophized names are of Japanese origin? What if the character (NPC, not PCs) names are just kana resulting in a similar or equivilent pronunciation in their version and these naming conventions are done 100% for the Roman alphabet-using audience?

Same deal here, except that by going male, my surname fits Seeker first name conventions perfectly (and I've wanted an apostrophe since XI!)

My Hyur Midlander will re-roll as Highlander. Looks like the name Alicia Gratie is going to be perfect with the Lore.

I'm making the oposite assumption. That the japanese crew working on those conventions are using the apostrophe as a mean to create words with a foreign, special and distant feel from their perspective. It is most likely done without knowledge of the impact of the faulty usage from the roman/latin based languages perspective.

I doubt they created the words initially from katakanas as they are used to emulate pronounciation only and if you can find me a combination of hiraganas that would fit: "A’zumyn Bhen", then i'll give you a baggie of catnip from my own private stash. Keep in mind that this is mostly a hunch of mine. Speculation at best.
