OMG that went wayyyyyy over his head.....
He doesn't get it... Vil don't explain it...Let it marinate.

The grass does kinda suck. The game as a whole though looks so much better than 1.0 i'm wondering if i'll need a new graphics card... to play on max settings. I was at max everything but 8/10 draw detail on 1.0
Actually I dont think you get it. Vil isnt aganist this grass thread (neither do I think he made his point for it, If I can say - Id say he his happily riding on the fence lol)
Its a good example :P, though fantasy games will obviously be picking the prettier grass on average.
But again its a good example where having a shorter bladed transparent grass would give the 3d immersion (2d grass textures alone dont cut imo) while still maintaining that muddy patchy feeling in that photo. (that slightly transparent effect being one of the things I was mentioning to help)
While there may be an NDA.. bla bla something something Yoshida and others have ensured us that what we used to run on 1.0 will run much smoother on 2.0 :D
And their graphics programmer asked permission to let the system go beyond for the higher powered systems. I'm hoping in the graphics update or something they try and break our computers lol
I'm on the fence because its not really fair to judge based on Alpha screenshots when the game was stuck at 11:00am Eorzean time, and the lighting was still being fixed
I'm also on the fence because like someone else posted, I know how much resources something can take even if you bump something simple up such as a texture.
I'm just waiting on Beta to see how the game looks with actual fixed lighting
Yeah about your "grass" thread... You do realize that the images you posted were from Alpha (I know you know that much) and Alpha (By SEs own admission) was not meant to to show the visual range of the game, while your comparing grass... TBH you could have found a lot of games better than the one you posted to compare the grass visuals... Not many games can run toe to toe with SE when it comes to visuals. I think its nit picking at a non issue as well as a non existent issue. If a company tells you before hand "HEY THIS IS NOT MEANT FOR CONTENT, VISUALS, OVERALL MECHANICS, ETC. THIS IS MEANT TO STRESS TEST THE ENGINES, SERVER CAPACITY AND STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY." I wouldn't be so quick to make posted about the very things they said were not implemented... Its like asking about "Frontlines" before alpha is even released but hey to each there own... I'm sure this won't be the last post from a person who didn't read anything just saw something and decided to make a thread over a topic that has already been beat into the ground... Real question is when will the "I want XI back" threads start back up....
Yeah thats what I thought.
I myself dont really care or ascribe for the its alpha thing, at least here in the general discussions of a dead version of the game. And if we wanted to talk about 1.0 the grass sucked there too and it wasnt in alpha or beta.
If lets say I played alpha you could probably expect I made a small post on it. Thats you know if and all hypothetical. . . . . :) And in beta I would then plan to make a bigger post on it unless there were changes.
Also I've been watching check this out, pay attention to the plant detail on the ground:
http://www.hulu.com/watch/423834
http://www.hulu.com/watch/423805
In the second one you can see higher clusters of grass as well as more plant types. Like the windmill limsa pan scene.
What I feel is needed most is blending of the grass into the environment, in ARR they are look like distinct element - but grass should flow into the environment (usually). Which is what I tried to capture in those screenshots in the first page, the first two the plant elements are very separate of the environment. In the second they feel much more apart of it (I picked them for that reason alone - so hopefuly I dont get replies on "well I dont like the characters" or something).

Sure but the "new" screenshots are just like the "old" ones so I dont see your point.
Just want to say I'm not saying that beta cannot have better looking grass, I already said in this thread that I wont bother posting if beta has made an improvement - or if Yoshida said its something for later.
Also seeing that trailer again, besides the crazy jittering (which they said will be changed a bit) - the monsters look so good >.>
Yeah, and you can't even smoke it either! BOOOOoo...
is this thread some kind of elaborate trolling?
You know all this focus on the grass is going to bite you in the ass when the character models end up needing more work to compensate.
My offer to make a mob out of the grass still stands.
Just when my image of this forum started to improve you come with this...
You think you got grass problems?
Where I come from, Grass is a VERY BIG problem:

Where I come from, Grass eats you.
i agree with you. for example i think that some of the new textures arent that strong like in 1.0.
but on the other side.. well look at gridania 1.0.
was it really an eyecatcher, i mean when it comes to graphics, textures or details?
http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets...0/gridania.jpg
just speaking about gridania 1.0. <-> 2.0. comparison
the graphics greatly improved. but well lets see how limsa and uldah look now.
It's undeniable that Grass in A Realm Reborn looks bad. And I am also sure that Yoshida and his Team know it very well, so in the future they will improve it. What is impressive is that the only bad aspect of Graphic seems to be Grass! It means that they did a very good job! Keep it up!

Saying that in a grass thread. You're hilarious!
Dude just calm down guys. The game isn't out yet, and if you're going to not play because they grass doesn't look as good as you want, that is fine. It is still a modern game and it has high-quality textures and details built in. I'm sure the appearance of grass will fit the rest of the scenery and there will be detail options in the graphics settings that you can set to better looking or more horrid-looking grass depending on your device.
EDIT: The arguments that "this game doesn't look like that game" shouldn't be valid, because each game as their own pros and cons when it comes to graphics.
Not enough grass options.
Whats name to that game?
http://spoonyexperiment.com/2010/07/...breaking-news/
Google" spoony experiment grass battle" and you can find all the winners.
NDA \o/ but I made this thread in preparation that beta has no change, if you stay up to date on all things SE - the grass hasnt made some magical change from last gen to this gen (even some of last gen looks better).
And I dont think you get what I was exampling in those photos if you think I want ARR's graphics to look like them. I dont want them to look like that other game - since that game is a sandbox game (you can build wherever) the environments are quite flat.
I was showing the grass/fauna only - the technology or w.e you want to say, the strands are smooth and have a response to light to better blend, they actually have a short grass that is in large cohesive mass rather then singular dotted units (like ARR's)
Also ARR isnt high res, at all. They use tricks to make everything look great (except the grass) while using low resolutions. If you look at anything up close you can "see" the pixels. While the strategy is pretty cool for weak computers its not something I particularly care for, I'd rather have the detail. Of course how they design those textures they may not exist. However getting 4 models of grass right and changing their color up, I feel like I'm on the better path of compromise here.
Edit: my bad you said high quality, not high resolution - their textures are pretty cool for the resolution, but their resolution is pretty low. (also I never said I was going to quit or w.e - so no need to "calm" down)
>.> I lol'd
That game's name is Archeage.
yeah the grass sucks, but i dont care
Just smoke the digital grass and be mellow.
Thank you lol, you dont need to say its your issue - but all the derisive, malcontent, mockery on this forum is just sad.
Like people who want better animations or not for their characters - not everyone cares but its obvious we dont have that good of animations anymore. Although we also learned that animation blending and some pieces are missing so we can look forward to a change in beta, that may fix all the problems people were having.
Graphics are a step backwards from 1.0 but no matter how many times i bring it up people keep saying its not an issue...
ps3 limitations*
Yesterday Life servers almost went down. Some of the mobs had grass textures. The admin did a hot-fix which fixed the issue, but not before I snapped a few screen shots. Did anyone else experience this issue?

I thought they were just broadening the spectrum to allow lower end machines to run the game smoothly. Pretty sure the graphics will still be great if you are running it on the higher end.
People just want to play the game I suspect, and anything to slow that down is against their desire (also people like to mock each other).
We still have what I assume will be just like alpha->beta 1.0 where the lightning gets changed drastically and that will help a lot but there are defintely some things that have gone backwards as well.
I havent decided to catalog them just because A. can only use NDA free screenshots B. I wanted to wait till beta
So there after I read whenever the graphic updates of what will be done - I hope to point out some things that are manageable.
I wont suggest redoing all the textures, but if they have high res textures sitting around they should consider a patch (like on the graphic milestone update), I wont suggest redoing all the models but to create a small handful of short bladed grasses to be used on high setting I will suggest.
I understand they dont have all the time in the world and I'm not forcing that issue here, in my OP I added what I said to Zenaku which was if they said their graphic milestone would have it then that is awesome.
That is the hope :P
(alpha footage says that the screenshots are true - but again we have to wait till beta for the best idea, I dont see why I cant post this in the dead forums though, I mean the mods have let the meme thread live.. lol)
@Cedri, that photo is really cool~ Looks like a giant chia pet :D (try to add something to the main topic though, like grass in games lol)
.....
OMG He got 2 Facepalms in less than 12 hours....
Speaking that 2.0 runs better then 1.0 I dont see the argument either that you couldn't have both.
Yoshida has put it in these terms, if you ran medium in 1.0 you will be running high in 2.0 no problem.
That means they have plenty of room to keep the high settings for those who actually want a real high setting.
That aside, I agree 1.0 was very flat >.>
Because it makes all the scenery look much better? But maybe you care more about just speed runs for the loots.
If they cut down on quality on any aspect, it will make everything else look bad.
Clouds are hard to get to look good, because they generally are static :) I mean the cloud shape never change.
If you got multiple layers of animated clouds, that can look quite nice.
That's why most games with grass got clutter density/view distance/quality settings.
Those with low-end PCs can turn down settings low, while those with good comps can turn it up; there's no reason to make half assed job of it for everyone, just cause some can't play with max settings :)
