And to summerize that entirely well written and insightful post with a movie quote:
"The Mob is Rome."

Lol - Because we get a free try at ARR it safe to say we would come back.
It is still however in their best interest to keep us pysched as we can be their word of mouth.
Who then would get others (non-previous players) involved and start watching, and those people dont get a free try so SE needs to then maintain the hype. Otherwise they may try another comparable (mmorpg) and not want to come over because they are already 100 hours into it.
We'll survive without a 2 week update on current Alpha progress.
In no way will Yoshi go a whole month or two without updates. He knows we are very eager to see what's next.
I'm just waiting patiently. :)
Really? wow hmm did you forget we have a FFXIV forums? when FFXI did not have that for years? and only got it onces they have to rebuild FFXIV? so ya i think they giving us enough information what do you want? a full book on everything going to happen in the next 10years to make you happy?
I mean come on -.- we have enough information if they give us anymore they wont be anything else to tell us in the next few month then we be really bored wishing we did not get that information.
You are comparing XIV to XI, both SE games and both examples of terrible communication. Both games terrible examples of marketing. And than you throw in this forum to the mix in which 80% of devs reply has been: we're working on it, we're looking into it, we cant discuss this at the moment, etc. They promised us weekly updates back in August and that failed. Servers went down with "we're working on it" yet again as a reply to comfort the customers.
SE doesn't know how to keep a momentum. The end of an era trailer was amazing but I bet you in couple of weeks most people will cool off and yet again we will go back to a dry spell. Look at all the previous instances. The game show videos, etc. It's always one step forward two steps back with SE.
Now don't get me wrong. XIV is the only MMO I've been playing since XI and only one I plan on playing. However, Tera, GW2, Rift, SWTORetc all had very transparent campaigns. GW2 turned out to be a disappointment from what I hear and the other two leaked subscribers very quickly. Does not change the fact that all of them sold a very large amount of copies and they are widely recognized titles. Ultimately, that's what XIV needs to do. It needs to sell millions of copies and they need to sell them to new customer because guess what. We already own a copy.
Facts are that XIV is still viewed as a failure. It still remains in the shadows. We know alpha will start on the 26th but that's it. The new timeline should been released with the new trailer. They have plenty of concept art, lore bits, screenshots, and other stuff they could be releasing weekly to keep people buzzing about the game. The latest producer letter was very disappointing as it rehashed most of the stuff we already knew.
It's a tough market out there and if SE wants to sell the game that charges monthly fee they need to amaze the average player. So far they been doing poor job with it.
If by terrible marketing you mean in the west, yes. Remember, XI originally wasn't even going to touch western shores until they decided on a Windows port and western gamers were more PC centric. In terms of other games though, they do well on marketing (could do better) but we can't really forget how pretty much all of their major titles sold purely based on 1 commercial alone lol, they never really needed a large campaign for their games before, but nowadays they do for their MMO for sure, especially since this is a second chance for a game that already failed.
Honestly, all they really need to do is slap it on steam from the get go too since XI on steam actually got decent sales and the preferred way to get it from what I seen with people who started joining around Abyssea.
Steam would help immensely
I am still dissapointed that we never truly got a flood of information. To me a flood of information would have given us an idea of how all the classes would work, but we are still somewhat in the dark about DOL/DOH which is something i've been waiting to learn more about since they announced the flood of information back in June.
I would hope that soon enough maybe before the new year they'll actually tell us everything there is to know or at least the overall concept behind the changes behind DOL/DOH as it stands now we just know it's faster and for DOL you can choose the item you want to gather but they don't go into detail as to how the overall concept will work which is something I've been hoping to hear more about.
Though I guess perhaps there was info this week because of the finale maybe they felt that was enough for this week but odds are we'll have something next week, though it wouldbe nice if they did update the other 2 classes types that are stillin the dark. Then again, maybe the information this week was the plot analysis and information regarding the finale, I guess since that story does tie into the alpha and because there was also a live letter they may have felt that there was no need to release an alpha video this week.
Since I guess maybe some of us wouldn't consider the live letter as part of the alpha footage even though it did show off a lot such as housing, armor designs, the other sex of the races they plan on adding as well as some gameplay. So it is highly possible that that's why they didn't release anything this week lol.
yeah..they should show fight with those adamantoise, iron giant, mindf...oops,
The Letters fro the Producer Live amounts to what I would call a flood of information. The screenshots and playing footage is pretty complete. I do not know of a single subject that has not been covered. The ARR site has lots of info. It has not been a week since the Live Letter and people are complaining they want more? Give them a break. The DEV team is on a one week break. They deserve a break. Alpha-3 should start Monday. You may not hear much about it but some footage is likely. They DEV team is really busy.... let them get their work done.
SE is changing one step at a time we wont even be talking right now if this was 2years ago SE lol so clam down and enjoy what they give us and wait for more information if that all you want.
Remember SE selling point would always be JP so get over it they never going to waste a big amount of money like they do in JP. JP had awesome tv ad for FFXIV lol maybe we get one here and people wont care why? becuase no one really see TV anymore but i hope they spam the shit out of it on Youtube that would get more western players.
Also i did not read half your post because i'm not going to read a wall of text you could have really said all that in a very short comment keep it simple please. Sure when people cool off we hit other dry spell who cares ffxiv no where near release so information not going to come out that fast when we closer to release i bet they do much better at release.
yoshi-p know what he doing so don't worry and remember NA is not the main selling point for FFXIV sure yoshi-p keep saying he want to get more players but sadly wow players jump to ffxiv 2.0 and leave in a few month so people who never played a final fantasy mmo is the sell point or someone who never play a mmo to start with.
You guys are so optimistic, weekly updates are highly unlikely if the past is any indication but I won't hold it against them, they are hard at work on the game
However they should stop saying "weekly updates", "flood of information" etc so people don't rage on them
You're completely delusional. XIV sold more copies outside of Japan for your information and not only XIV is in trouble. Entire Final Fantasy brand is in trouble. Wada publicly apologized if you don't remember. You're basically saying they should keep doing same thing and ignore western market. A completely idiotic idea all together. If SE plans on making money they need a strong foot in western market. If XIV doesn't make enough money they will abandon any plans of making expansions or supporting it. There is not going to be 3.0.
You tell me to keep it short and simple and you go on white knighting for two more paragraphs. Come on buddy, who made you a GM here?
until they show some release date i'll be on planetside 2
dont care much for the ARR videos anymore just want to play it when it gos live. im guessing march 2013 at earliest now.
I never said ignore western market but the new western players just don't enjoy final fantasy like how people use too. Really people need to stop using that dumb **** white knighting how am i defending SE at all here? I'm just saying they never made a big market plan for there MMO in NA and i hope they do but i don't see it happening.
You get your videos/information when there ready to show it to us they can't fail like they did so they have to make sure it good enough to show. + we talking about a JP company that 2years ago would not even care two **** what we have to say to them and today we talking on a SE forums. The company that have ignore most of there player base is not going to change overnight they have done good so far. Yes they need a strong western market but at the end that western market would end up going to the next wow-clone or wow new update or even blizzard new mmo whenever that come out. It's better just to take what we get and not have so much high hope you just going to be disappointed if you do anything else that something i learn about SE and there not going to change anytime soon so it best to just get use to it.
@Ricky: When they said a new flood of information was coming out they did just that. They give us load of information on UI,Housing, free company and many other part of the game. It's just never enough for some people. Or more like it never the right information they looking for / amount.
and the weekly updates they give us a 2+hour video in the live letter lol i think that more then enough for the rest of the week don't you think? once alpha goes back live they make more videos.
I'm pretty sure you way misinterpreted what I meant - and where extremely rude in the processes.
I said people who already are in game will of course come back we get a free trial of ARR. But people WE show the game to that DONT have an account have no reason to come (for the first time) if they start another MMO while waiting for SE. (lots of buddy passes could help prevent a part of this) But also keeping a good hype machine is another good idea.. lol
I'd get off your flame button - it does no one any good.
Warlock misinterpreting something?
Shocking.
I have a pretty unpopular opinion... but:
I think it's totally okay if SE goes quiet for a while.
I feel like they did a lot of great work when they weren't directly involved in player opinions and requests. I hope SE worries less about us, who have already fallen for XIV.. and focus more on the new life and blood of 2.0
I know a great many FF fans who didn't know XI even launched/existed.. and the same thing happened with XIV (for better or worse). I know a lot of people who would've played XI had they learned of it sooner.. but eventually decided against it because they felt they would be joining in "too late" and didn't want to "catch up" (and I'm talking.. '07-'09)
Hell, even I didn't know FFXIV launched when it did and I'd been excited about the idea since this video (in apparently '05-'06!?): http://youtu.be/sgtZvn5c4e4
I hope they market hard and strong, and try to get attention of communities outside of the lodestone with all of their features and updates.
Thankfully with social media today it'll be easier for me to spread the word and excitement (got my '06-'07 CoP static excited about ARR, and various other people) but we can only do so much as players. I really hope we're not the main demographic they want to appeal to. :)
I don't mind if SE goes quiet for a while either, though they could actually keep us apprised as of what's happening.
One post a week on a set day that they don't deviate from.
It would give people looking forward to XIV something to look forward to every week.
In most cases you would be correct. But the again most casrs do not have the history of FFXIV. Remember, this game was a complete failure upon release. In normal cases SE would have written it off and tried again. Instead they decided to salvage the game and in turn their reputation. They took it upon themselves to open up a dialog with their subscribers for which I applaud them. In my opinion once they started down that road with FFXIV they cannot turn back. What I was trying to do with me recommendation was to provide them with an organized approach to the dissemination of that information. I am not asking for a step by step blueprint for each phase of the game. All we need is a general outline of their approach, especially in the areas that caused this game to fail in the first place. I am not looking for the "Flood of Information" that was promised but those of us who have steadfastly supported this game and in turn Yoshi-P and his team deserve something.
This argument would be valid if the game was only striving to be a regional game, it is not. SE is attempting to develop a global product so therefore there approach should be global. What they can get away with in Japan after the launch failure will not work in EU and NA. Most people here need to be assured that their patience will be rewarded. Information goes a long way to fulfilling that reward.
Rizon, you keep talking about rewards - it may be just me, but haven't we been rewarded enough? Legacy, unique items, event items, progression (they didn't shut down servers). Why must we request more? Is there a limit to how much we define as our 'reward'? Not to mention information isn't something that really 'relates' to being a reward for us who stayed with game, because anyone can access it, not just people who've stuck with the game. Maybe it's high-time to drop this 'reward' approach because we've been compensated enough as it is.
I'm not condoning complete silence from them. But here in this thread we have complaints about a perceived (not actual) laps in video releasing and the result is something that could be interpreted as a hissy fit.
Speaking of that disaster you're talking about when it came to FFXIV 1.0. They did a great job of turning that game around, from the fights to the cut-scenes. It truly began to feel like Final Fantasy, even before the End of the Era. In light of this, I'd actually go so far as to say they've earned a moment's reprise.
Let them chill out, relax, recharge their batteries and get ready to redouble their efforts on 2.0. We can hound them for more information (and believe me, I have my ways of asking them) once we're done stuffing ourselves full of turkey and the holidays get closer.
Hyrist, keep the snurbles out of this! D:
The snurbbles have always been a part of this, since the beginning!
and Camate lied, he diddn't hide his kin under his desk.
And liars lose family members.
While in theory that sounds like a perfectly amazing idea and reasonable to expect. However you may have noticed that some of the idiot children here will take information regarding a concept or new feature and without all the details fill in the remainder of the information themselves. This leads to panic threads/rants/jumping to conclusions.
Kind of like, "I heard they are making the Ul'dah citizens look more arab. OMG SE supports terrorism, check for WMDs!"
This is obviously a joke example but no more ridiculous than most of the posts I've read lately. The sad, sad truth of the matter is that a fair percentage of the player base cannot be trusted with new information.
That being said, I'd love some minor updates and as far as most of the game I'd prefer to see it for myself in game and make my own conclusions (then keep them to myself).
The more you wait for information, the longer the wait for release is going to seem. Put the game in the back of your mind for now, and it will be out before you know it. A lot of us waited for info the first time around, and how did that work out for us?
Well, we get a custom chocobo, Legacy status (which comes with 7 free character slots at a discounted normal price), even I hear words of some sort of physical mark for surviving Dalamud (Rumored to be a tatoo).
This is on top of the Goobue, and the unique plotline only we've experienced.
So yeah, we've been recognized.
Not nice to exaggerate. I don't think anyone here realistically wants EVERY sliver of information as you put it. I'm going to exaggerate too and call people out as liars if they can't admit that there is A LOT we don't know about 2.0. How do I know this? Take a look at all the threads people post on speculations, where the only response people like you give is, "we don't know yet, just wait till the game comes out." I personally won't get upset by lack of information, but to pretend that the people who are more excited than we are to know more are "entitled" or too impatient is just dishonest.
Well, that was very judgmental of me. Guess that happens when you just throw a blanket statement over everyone who doesn't feel the same way you do. SE is known for saying vague things. "We will be adding something nice for housing, please look forward to it!" If that's good enough for you, great.
Can't we all just get along? Besides:

I could think of worse things like the internet going boom for example.
