People faired perfectly fine in Final Fantasy XI...Hell they even had "FUN"

I'm italian as well, rarely lag. I prefer international servers, because I like interacting with people from all over the world. That was one of the things I liked the most on FFXI and I hope XIV keeps going this way.
Granted, but I imagine that is the intention...
Minimizing the proximity between different aspects that are cause for over-crowding and server congestion. Naturally, the social, economic, quest, etc aspects would be handled on your home server (like a home-base) and the heavily spammed or massive involvement content would open to the cross-server options.
Yes, yes I would becasue I have friend allover the world who I play games with.
I have become good friends with people far beyond my limited "Region" I know many American, Japanese, European, French, German, (ext) players that I would give up a bit of ping to play with. So in a sense yes I would blow the kneecaps from twitch gameplay mechanics if I can remain with my friends online.
Hell I play in Canada and get far from a "Superb" ping to japan yet I managed to play Theif who is highly dependant on position of monsters and twitch timing including multiple gear swaps and I never felt the grief that many other people seem to flaunt.
Christ I outclaimed Japanese players and a regular basis during my career as a Notorious Monster Hunter. So I don't see the issue with regional servers that everyone else pretends is a issue.
I REALLY hope they don't make regional servers as well.
One the best thing about ff11 and 14 is the possibility to play with all the world... if they kill this, they will kill one of my major element of fun and social aspect.
One of the things that makes XI and XIV so unique is the global servers, and feeling like you were playing with people all over the world.
I currently play with an American friend (I'm from the UK) and I'd be really upset if that was no longer possible. I also played XI with an American linkshell and made some great friends doing so.
Uh finally that knows what i'm talk about...! I think the major part of ppl that doesn't want regional server, didn't play any other mmo except XI ... They don't know how is important the latency is in really challenging fight like wow hard modes or swtor nightmares... (If we get that level of challenge anyway ..lol)... :)
Even if XI latency was better, it was a dead slow and even more static game worse than XIV (but it was ok 10 years, ago but now really NO. ) So the latency feeling was better.
This, i remember when there where rarely laggy night with 300-400 ms of latency (full server in italian primetime) and most intelligent thing to do was skip the raid night cuz even if it was slightly playable (still better than XIV lol) .. you had no chance to survive with that latency (avoid boss special moves, kill fast the boss cuz you know, in modern game there is the "enrage" usually in 10-15 min).
As i said before, people are "stuck" on XI or never tried High leven endgame in other games, and this is the greatest problem. Guess why Yoshi-P invited the team play a bunch of western MMO :P
I tried almost every tipe of mmo, i started with XI (played for 5 years, but now in 2012 i will never back on a such slow game) , then i stayed on wow for 3 years, then XIV, rift, swtor, and lastly tera, without mention the lolf2p.
So imho i have e better idea of what ppl wants than who has played only XI.. No?
And again, guess why Yoshi-P invited the team to play many western mmo... He said the jp developer where good only at make single player games (well imho in this gen, not even them) .
I'd be happy with regional servers, I'll be sad to leave my LS and friends but I would rather have better response times.
Hopefully they announce it, they will no doubt keep international servers for those who want to stay on them, probably just new servers for 2.0 players.
LOL this game is many times faster paced than FFXI, nice try though.
1.x perhaps.. who knows what they have planned for 2.0, faster servers mean they can do more interesting battles, if players aren't getting good enough response times you end up with stuff like current Ifrit.
LOL if you think Theif is twitch timing you obviously haven't played a recent MMO. (WoW boss fight)
Dragonheart speaks the truth, besides Jynx why are you even arguing about this it seems Yoshi-p has made up his mind and has something to tell us when the time is right, if you don't like it too bad.
Im sure they will keep international servers for those who want it.
Honestly I'd be really happy with locized servers. Playing with pple around the world sounds nice but it brings more problems than good things.
Lag is one. The you have the communication barrier. Lets say you join a high population server but I'd just happens that this server has a 30-40% population of Japanese players. That's a big chunk of pple that probably don't speak English and who might not be able to play with. Also there is the time zone issue where these players don't play at the same time you do. With that 30-40% population not really being reachable that makes your high pop server a Med to low one.
You can make friends anywhere in the world. It matters more to have smooth enjoyable game play and to be able to communicate and play with 100% of the server.
As long as they don't force anyone to regional servers or make those exclusive to much better response timing (which I don't think it's what'll happen), I'm happy.
Personally I prefer an international one. Communicating with people from all over the world is what I seek mostly in a MMO. :)
Thanks Jinko, someone that understand what i mean :D ...
Guys, if i say that it's because i have a lot of friends that left xiv cuz of lag first of all!
Most of them are now doing Nightmare modes on SW (and some of them are crazy hard yeah)...
So when i show them a video of what has been implemented on XIV, like Chimera, Garuda and etc. they simply laugh at me saying things like:
-What kind of gameplay is that? All bind to the ground spamming actions?
-WTF ranged shooting besides the rock and they don't get loss of target??
- Why everything feels so heavy, slow and static?
- Lol everyone ranged, 5 same class in a pt, where is the balance? etc
And i simply can't contrast -what they say because i played always with them, did many first kill on wow (like lich king hm ) and so i know what they mean.
SO i REALLY hope that 2.0 will succeed for me, ( so i can tell them that i was hoping the right :P) , and for all the ppl that quitted before like my friends to bring them back.
No thanks to regional servers.
So, I live in Ontario Canada, it's about the same distance from Japan as Europe.
I never experience this dreaded lag that everyone talks about and just wanted to put that out there.
I do however experience a horrid lag, one which I would never take to a fight, on my laptop. It actually about doubles the time to take stuff to react, you can really feel it.
Lowering the graphics drastically, only help this so much.
My laptop aint bad either, it's an i7 Quad, 2 ghz, 6gb ddr3 ram, nvidia gtx540m. It just runs the game really poorly, and besides having to run the game in on lowest graphics, there's that horrid lag. Which I'm cool with, I just craft on it.
What I'm trying to say is, I'm not conviced the lag that people complain about during ifrit is based on you're region (since I've never had a problem on PC), but more on the specs of you're PC (processor or g-card).
When they optimize this game for lower end PC's, I'd imagine that retched lag on my laptop will be gone. While the game is playable on my PC, there's definatly room for improvement there as well. if they can work on those two areas, though there's always gonna be some lag due to the fact most of us play from the other side of there world, I'm sure we'll feel enough of an improvement.
I hope they don't region lock servers, the US one would be dead in a week -_-
Regional sever sucks.
Hi Folks,
Actually i like to play on international servers too (i´m an EU Player) but actually, with 2.0 it won´t matter on which server you are, because you can play with ppl from other servers.
So it would be like: Im on a fast server, with no lag, but can play internationally through content finder
If i got it right, it´s a really good solution i think! Or maybe im totally wrong, then pls correct me :)
Regards
Oh yes. Every time some sore loser doesn't get the claim on something, they'll blame it on "the server lag!".
I love how that becomes everyone's default argument for everything. Either that or "They beat me to the claim! ZOMG they're botting/hacking!". As though it's completely beyond comprehension and possibility that maybe someone simply had better timing than they did and beat them to the claim fair and square. It's right up there with people who feel every time they lose a fight in PvP that it's because the other person was hacking, or the other class was overpowered, etc. They'll never admit that the other person was simply a better player or had a better fight than they did. Their egos just won't take it.
Now, while that's not to say that server lag and the occasional hacker aren't a possible issue (they are in every MMO), it's not always the issue is all I'm saying. Those things become convenient scapegoats for people to use for their own failings.
People can be incredibly bad sore losers and will blame anything and everything except themselves. I'm sure "server lag!" has seen its share of undeserved attention in that case.
As for more things being handled client side... that would be a fix in some ways, but it would also open a hole large enough to sail the Titanic through (if it were still afloat). People would be doing the same crap they did in XI, with their speed hacks, their "teleporting across the zone" hacks, their "teleporting directly to a NM" hacks, etc. This all happened with XI because the server side seemed to give precedence to the client side in terms of where the player was at any given moment; it was abused like crazy. SE would have to put really careful measures in place to make sure that was kept to a minimum.
Personally, I guess the best "please everyone" solution is to have a mix of both. Have global servers for those who like the world-wide community like XI had (that would be me), and have some that are regional for those who are hung up a fraction of a second difference. I just wonder if those who are hung up on the lag/latency thing realize there are various other factors affecting their lag beyond where the server is located, and that those things are beyond SE's and their own control.
Its easy to tell the difference between latency issues and frame rate issues.
The fact of the matter is your are smack in the middle of both regions, your latency is going to be half of what an EU player experiences.
This isn't up for discussion, its proven that distance makes a massive different in these kinds of games, as others have said playing WoW with 300+ ms compared to 80 ms is night and day.
Fact is that EU players get 300ms tacked on before they even start.
Actually this isn't true, there is a good reason why US and EU WoW players don't get to play together.
Content finder will only work per region, you can't really connect two servers between EU and JP the data transference would be unbelievably big.
Hist a server in the EU
That way Americans can play with EU people and not suffer too much lag and EU dont suffer the crippling 300-400 ms we get now :)
Jumping to conclusions YAAAAAAAY!!!
By the way guys heres how you check your latency to your server
I only know 2 direct server adresses so here they are
Durandal - 202.67.51.111
Ragnarok - 202.67.51.121 or 120 (a bit hazey in memory)
So you basically ping those
to run a ping test got to CMD or command prompt in windows.
Type:
ping -t 202.67.51.111
And it should start pinging the address through your router.
Sorry guys
Really hate to say it but I really hope 2.0 doesnt turn into anything like suggested above first of all
WOW ruined MMOs!!!!!
They brought in instant gratification and easy achievements and WTF Achievements !! thats a stupid COD concept
Secondly the idea of most final fantasy is slow-medium paced imersive combat where strategy is prioritized above twitchy button pressing. (agreed FFXI was VERY slow - but the strategy element was perfect)
Now wow lich king and big SW monsters spamming loads of buttons sounds fun in some ways but tbh i can get the same kind of excitement from BF3 or Call of Duty.
Second WOW hard lol...
Try Old school COP or Bahmut pre all this lvl 90 bull crap and abysea or whatever its called.
Here a comparison of what insta grat games bring to the MMO community
firstly 2007 very fun fight Bahmut V1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExP-qis3E5o
Second Bahmut V1 2012 - post abysea bull
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUyyduk3pRg
And heres another great old vid from the good old days of difficulty
Bahmut V2 - 18 man battle !!
And yes they are sub bosses awfully strong as well spawned during the fight and u have to kill them quick cos mega flare kills if bahmut uses it :)

I'm not though, my ping to japan is 350ms and I'm 10300 ish km away, it's roughly the same distance as most of EU players. Some slightly more, some slightly less.
Because I'm the same distance away from most of EU (not half the distance like you seem to think), I'm just not understanding why others complain so heavily about the lag.
I have a pimped out rig with the highest speed internet I can get and I'm right in the city, so I'm not faced with every problem that most are.
However, even with my internet, if I play on my laptop, I experience lag. I'm not talking framerate lag either, i'm talking serious delay in enemy response and when i get off my chocobo.
On my laptop I consider the game unplayable for most things, that's why i only use it to craft.
I've got it pegged as hardware related lag.
If I had to guess, it's the nvidia gtx 540m.
But it shouldn't be the distance. Google the distances, Toronto Canada.
***added***
*cough*
So after over a year of having my laptop, I changed a setting and I can play the game with HQ graphics >.>;
I feel silly -.-;
I've played both CoP pre nerf and WoW heroic raids, and WoW is much much more difficult.
You sound like someone who has played WoW for a week and not even experienced Heroic raids.
Well if its not frame rate issues and its not latency issues what is it ?
It's one or the other, I didn't realise you get 300 ms from Canada my bad, even so you think 300ms isn't something to be concerned about ?
I sure as hell do, granted this game may not have fast paced battle like WoW, but it does require quick thinking when moving out of eruptions/plumes and other stuff.
I hope that in 2.0 the servers will allow for even more complex boss fights, the only problem then is the latency messing that up.
Ifrit isn't that hectic and we all know how many issues that causes.
P.s you say its not frame rate related but then blame the graphics card, make up your mind :P
Has everyone forgotten that Yoshi already explained his plans to create both regional AND global servers for 2.0? This has already loooong been decided since before 2.0 was announced.
They said they might add regional servers, and they did.
Ragnarok
Now if you are talking about regional servers located in Europe, or the US. He never said that, and the quote in the OP doesn't imply that at all. It just means an announcement about lag or latency, most likely about how 2.0's server will improve this.
