How about starting by making PVP not feel like hot garbage, and then adding rewards to it that are worth pursuing?

When FFXIV is on top of the MMO world right now, they should avoid pulling these types of things. Usually in the past when they bring back old sets, they will mix them up for new jobs to use and make them dyeable versions. They didn't do that this expansion. They brought back the ascian gear sets from SHB, but left them undyable. Why?
I don't know why they keep introducing gear that isn't dyeable, and then the sets that do dye usually dye like crap. For example, the new red mage chest piece dyes the cloth and leaves the cape a dark blue. But why? If I want to dye the armor, why is there a huge chunk of it left as a random (usually hard to match) color? Also the white mage set, why does the red HAVE to stay on the dress? I don't understand who is behind these decisions, but the dye system and glamour system need a MAJOR rework.
Not to mention there's been no new PVP sets since the beginning of SHB, in the past each expansion has 2-3 pvp sets.
Also give reasons to grind dungeons for good looking new gear. Why do the 89 and 90 dungeons have no new gear?
The info on why it looks like DRG gear is below. Spoiler tags because Endwalker spoilers.
The radiant gear is based on the gear that the EW NPC Radiants wear since the scales have shielding properties against Blasphemy. It looks like Dragoon gear because the great Wyrm Vrtra gave his scales to make the armor for his Radiant soldiers. In the cutscenes, they show the raw patch of skin on Vrtra's side where scales were donated.
I was very very eager and hoping that the Radiant npc gear would be offered as useable armor so it was great to see it arrive.
Also, a lot of reskins/recolors and dye option unlock were requested in the glam thread so the player base has been asking for this.
I for one am glad to see the bonewicca sets redone in anything not gold. As for the pvp armor recolors, I did not like the Roman pvp style sets and I don't like the crafted ones but I know many people who refuse to pvp who are glad to have them.
The other pvp recolors added in EW were among some of my all time favorites and very glad to see the alternative.
What's "not"? The metal being more detailed?
The effect they've done on the metal isn't just "how different colouring works". They haven't just applied a different colour, they've gone over it and added detailed shading and texture that isn't on the original.
Let me grab the close-up of the hand jewellery again:
It's not just changing the colour of the existing model. They've gone over it and added a detailed texture of dark and light that simply isn't there on the original. Even the waist chain has gone from being flat to textured metal. Also the leaves twining up the arm seem to be less pixellated, though that could be the screenshot quality.
It's probably all a 2D effect and not changing the model itself, but it's very effective nevertheless.
And the Genji set two expansions ago made everyone look like a samurai. And the Edengate set made melee look like healers (the horror!).
It's not the end of the world that we get one set to dress up as a different class's style. Different styles and ideas are good.
As for it being "taken from NPCs", I like that it gives the sets a logic and a purpose for existing in the game world. They make sense in the setting instead of wondering where the in-game makers got the idea.
I honestly can't fathom why it should be some kind of insult for the models to be used as NPC gear instead of being kept exclusive to us.
And ARR gear was a constant recycling of its own gear a lot of the time. Recycling of gear sets has been baked into the game from the beginning.
(Though I still think Endwalker's sets needed more shuffling of roles.)
Regarding the first tomestones sets, I was slightly disappointed that they didn’t give us Kain’s outfit for the maiming jobs, except his spear which is given to Dragoon... I liked him in FFIV & Dissidia. :)
I hope they stop doing this. They out so much effort into MSQ scenes that we see maybe once or twice in our lifetime while playing through it, but then get lazy on things we stare at every day (glams) like if I could choose between slashing 20% of voice acting in msq in exchange for all original and dyeable armor sets I would take that deal in a heartbeat. Sorry but there is no denying glams is such a huge portion of this game that if they could invest in something, it should be this. I hope they upgrade the graphics to keep the game fresh as well.
If they are going to reuse sets they could at least flip around on the roles so to say tank get the earlier melee variant, caster get ranged and so on.
Not saying I agree or disagree with the situation, but this is kind of a norm for the “leveling” dungeons. For the most part the few leveling dungeons feature recolors of previous-but-obsolete dungeon gear, often on jobs that didn’t have them before (eg. Stormblood’s Ghost Barque Mask of Maiming from Sirensong is the same model as the crafted Beech Mask of Healing).
Personally I liked how previously tank-only or caster-only gear might feature on other jobs…but yeah, I will say the options this time were somewhat lackluster. I had hoped to see something like the Paglth’an sets shuffled (the “bat” caster set used on ninja for example).
Re: Recolors
On recoloring I actually would love more of this. My main tank set has always been the cuirass given early on because of the red highlights. It is hard to find a cuirass with sub-colors (not the dye parts) that I like.
I find it bonkers that we got so many reskins in EW and not a single one swapped roles. That's the whole point of why I love when they do reskins! The colors may be a big different, but it lets me swap some old favourites around. The fact they're near carbon copies and no one got anything new (aside from, like, leather tint and that. Or straight up a version of an old dyable gearset that can't be dyed) drove me up a wall.
I was also triggered when I saw that the new crafted 90 set had the rotten skin of the PvP set with an ancient Rome feel.
It's not even in the Endwalker vibe, I don't mind that garlemaldais are between a certain style and something else, but this skin recycling sucks.
I was expecting a cool new skin that would absolutely make me want to get that new set for the glam, nothing, it just sucks recycled skin.
That he recycled skins, it would have been nice too the Ivalice skin where it was to cast and heal a kind of kimono, but in a dyable version, I would have found it too cool, but here... At some point we were treated to Void Ark, Dun Scaith, etc. dyable raid skins.
I guess the "cool" skins are on the Mogstation, it's a shame.
Wouldn't mind the rampant asset reuse if they swapped roles around. Still wanting heavy armor on healers and casters.
Maybe it's the last couple of dungeons not giving gear at all that has players feeling a bit more irked too? That and I'm all for re-used stuff, but only if it's shuffled around and dyeable, like previous posts have mentioned.
We did get gear from Mt Gulg though, but we don't from the Aitiascope.
Functionally we don't need it because they gave us the job gear that scales down to 89 instead, but it's still disappointing – and really there's at least some practical use for putting appealing gear in the X9 dungeon, which is to lure people into running it directly for glamour. So it's a pity that we got nothing. I'd take another recycled set over nothing.
Something a bit ethereal-looking and recoloured into Hydaelyn's white and blue colour scheme would look great. The i240 primal gearsets perhaps? Or the Labyrinth gear so the classic Warrior of Light armour makes a reappearance. Or the Twelve-themed PVP sets could have worked well. And could reuse the Bluespirit weapons with a crystal glow.
Basically, have something there that looks special and Hydaelyn-themed even if it's a recycled model.
Maybe they should just drop the unique DoH and DoL sets they add every expansion that almost no one can use because we don't have the plates for it to free themselves up to make more sets.
Or even better, lift the restrictions on them/make level 1 replicas so we have a wider pool of looks to pull from.
Lol, no
PVP in this game is a hollow shell only played for rewards or an extremely minor portion of the population due to the game's in baked latency and extremely disjointed pvp kits
it needs a top to bottom rework before it'll ever get any sizable amount of players outside of tomestone events or daily frontline queues for exp, neither of which are because PVP is any good.
They blame it on covid which I don't accept as a valid reason. IT has never really had issues working from home unless the staff is lazy and I'm pretty sure that Japanese workers have a much stronger mindset. I understand music since Soken had to recover from cancer and even then, he was working while in the hospital. He's a beast! But for the rest of the expansion, what happened? Maybe their workflow relied heavily on being near each other / working in the same room? I don't know if they had to work from home much but I get if it were a month or two late for adjusting but, it was about 6 months passed due and the expansion felt rushed despite its size. It didn't have the quality seal that you would expect them to have. It was/still is buggy, has a lot of clipping and rendering issues, outfits are reused, many features that were to be released for 6.0 were slated for a much later release.
Maybe we expected too much because Shadowbringers was such an amazing release, it set the bar so high it couldn't be beat?
The issue you mentioned is not a PvP issue though, it is a 'game'&'community' issue. The lag is in every content, and the comunity wanted a more casual mode that made it look too boring and unengaging the last years. It was actually pretty balanced at some points.
I dislike too, how they take more and more PvP sets and reskin them for PvE. I also think Deepshadow PvE Tome Set from last expansion was the 2nd PvP Set Shadowbringers was supposed to get, but already then they must have scrapped it in order to release on time. Usually PvP always got 2 PvP sets during 1 addon. Now only 1.
Why would I continue to play PvP if the sets just get added to Crafters later? Should we add savage gear to PvP too?
See, I’m confused over this too. I thought the whole point of the unique dungeon sets was so that those dungeons can still get activity (outside of just rouletting into them) and help out new players.
The new gear sets being reused are coming from those unique dungeon sets like Ghimlyt, Swallow, and Skalla. So…why even do those dungeons anymore? You can just buy the sets. What are they doing/thinking?
If they're going to reuse gear sets can they at least fix them up so viera and hroths can wear the headgear?
Variants are variants. Dedicated glamourers will still be running the dungeon because they need the version that comes with gold trim instead of silver.
On the other hand, putting them in levelling dungeons is a blessing because they come with a guaranteed drop at the end.
That said, I think the endgame dungeons should have guaranteed drops as well once they're no longer current. RNG is silly and you have to run things a miserable amount of times to get what you want. Even with guaranteed drops you can be stuck running it a number of times, but at least you know there's a finish line.
Exactly, Greek, so why Roman glams? I hope I won't get a "it's the same" reply.
Honestly, I wish. Since not liking pvp is good enough excuse to egt those glams elsewhere, why shouldnt't people who don't like savage be able to get dyable raid gear elsewhere too?
I definitely agree that the endgame dungeon sets should at least guarantee you a piece per run, it would allow activity and reduce the awful amounts of runs that you have to do to get a specific piece to drop.
What I don’t like is that they should have reused other stuff, like the Saint’s Arbor (hard) set or something because that still can’t be dyed.
And not, you know, shire again.
Definitely agreed there. We just got Shire, it was already dyeable twice over, and the new versions have a weird thing with permanent green highlights so you can't even dye them freely.
I'd rather get the Arboretum Normal sets (Plague/Thief/Duelist) because those are also waiting on dyeable versions and they have a stronger link to Sharlayan, appearing at both the Arboretum and the Gubal Library. The Royal Volunteer sets, on the other hand, were clearly intended for the Burn and only ended up in the Arboretum due to being in the same patch.
it's definitely a pvp issue more than PVE just due to player movement being far more affected by latency and causing a LOT more ghosting on anything other than perfect connections.
Maybe PVP used to be good, but as it currently stands it's not, it needs some serious love before i think they should even be locking those top 100 sets behind it.
anyways, this thread is about reusing sets and i think that's a fine thing to do IF and only if they do proper dye changes and some cross classing, otherwise it comes off as kind of lame.
Yet Id prefered the Exodus set for the tome and the new one first... idk...
Yes but thats exaclty the point, its role swapped, so for example a ninja can use my beloved healer set and it dyes not quite the same, which is pretty neat.
For the record, we only got like 2 unique leveling sets in Shadowbringers too IIRC, same as Endwalker. The first crafted set was a reskin in Shadowbringers too.
I think it was the same deal for Stormblood too? Yanxian stuff might have been new too, but I guess that's balanced out by most of the Nomad stuff being exactly the same but in different colours.
Reskins have always been a thing, but they usually come with the caveat of either being: Dyable, role swap, or more detailed color palette. All the current noise is due to every reskin being near the same for the same roles they were assigned to.
The crafted gear being old PvP gear is really disappointing for sure. The tome gear and raid gear is fine to be honest.
Now regarding glamour systems in general, have a decent glamour library and being able to dye certain parts of the armor instead of everything is stuff that is years on the community wishlist.
Game needs a new engine and investment in general for sure or it will prevent growth in the future, hope the CEO of SE is paying attention stuff besides NFT garbage.
Not gonna lie, I've been a little disappointed how many recolors I've recognized. That's always one of the best things about new dungeons, to me.
At least the AF sets are wholly unique... right?
As a huge glamour enthusiast, new gear sets are among the things I look forward to the most whenever any new content is released. I was also extremely disappointed by all the recolors in this expansion, especially since the choice of reused gear left a lot to be desired. Like, can we please not have 3 different recolors of the same set (e.g. WoD in ShB and Shire in EW)? And that PvP set recolor was the last nail in the coffin. Like many others have said, why not swap the gear between the roles? I'd love to get some of the healing gear for my BRD. Healing gear is almost always the one that fits my taste the most and, in my opinion, the best for female characters. I want my female character to look feminine even though I'm not playing a healer, and I'm sure healer mains who play male characters would appreciate getting something other than robes.
People like you literally get dunked 60 times in rival wings and never queue again only to endlessly whine on the forums pvp is dead. Its the only form of content in this game that has variables that isn't a wipe in easy normal content. Its literally the whining every single first time pvper in other mmos has where they have a nuclear meltdown because a long term pvp enjoyer dunked them effortlessly.
I think we completely deserve it.
People pressure Squeenix into creating new races that require several expansions worth of gear to be adjusted for every job, then turn around and make a surprise Pikachu face when corners have to be cut.
