If I misunderstood his intent its because his words could lead one to believe otherwise. He said this
In response to this
Bold typically means someone is emphasizing something. So I'm not sure why he would give an "in your opinion" response to that. Also it is not one's opinion that gay men shouldn't be caricatured and stereotyped into one set box.
Square should release one masculine and 1 feminine hairstyle each patch and make them unisex, so everyone can enjoy them.
Please more curls, we don't need more ponytails with braids.
I get that this is a style we don't have a lot of and that people want, and there are definitely a number of distinct styles that could be picked out and added, but I still don't see how you expect it to be a thing that gets lots of variations on an ongoing basis.
If you made a grand list of "all the possible hairstyles you could make with any length of hair", this would be a small corner of it. It's never going to be treated as half the styles they should make on an ongoing basis.
Even "all the styles you could ever want to use on a male character" is going to be far more varied.
I'd love to see more undercuts, so yes, please.
Sis, genuinely confused here. What are you actually arguing?
Even if devs focused exclusively on producing just a third of the styles depicted in the OP, with the rate they release hairstyles, that's literally years worth of content. And here you are arguing the quantifiable limit of styles based on length??? Assuming you're putting aside artistic licence and the gravity-defying nature of the medium.
As it stands, there's a dearth of masculine styles, some of which are locked behind race. So yes, I'd like to see more of an effort in said direction.
Let me guess
Your first reply conveniently left out "Caricaturing gay men as yaoi boys is sick and twisted", while implying my response (which you bold-faced, and I didn't) was about the info in bold, which, from context, it was not.
You did indeed misunderstand, and are still rather deliberate in your failure to let the second explanation stand.
How do you know that my response [I quoted the full post] was primarily to the 'sick and twisted'? I used those exact same words with reference to the other gay stereotype - one which the poster appears to embody, as his avatar is that of a Roegadyn.
As for the 'fan fiction' comment - his post was in direct response to a trans person's comment about writing yaoi fanfiction. My second response (to your apparent dismay) addressed why the term 'yaoi' finds itself covering a multitude of genres that are not 'caricatures of gay men' but the West still uses it to cover everything.
I'll allow your confusion to stand, because anything anyone else says doesn't seem to make a difference. Hope you're enjoying it.
Let's take a look at a couple of websites with "current Japanese male" hairstyles. They run the gamut of FFXIV hairstyles (although I will admit the high fade short haircut is one of my favorites, and absolutely not something anyone well over the age of 50 should really attempt). There are quite a few that I would find good to introduce into the game if they don't already exist.

Hmm... then maybe you should have been more specific? "Gay people don't exist for your yaoi fanfiction or fetishism" was the bolded part of his statement. Ativan bolded it in his post, and we can all agree that bolding something means you are emphasizing it. If you didn't want to be taken out of context maybe you should have done a better job at articulating yourself. However, seeing all/most gay men as just cute yaoi boys is derogatory and demeaning to them. Why? Because Gay people don't exist for your yaoi fanfiction or fetishism.
No, I think I understand what you said pretty well.
Well I hope it was, since you just tried convincing me a few sentences ago that it was to that. Maybe you are the one who is misunderstanding yourself? Also just because someone plays a muscular character does not mean they are doing it for some sexual reason. I can't believe I actually have to say this.
Not sure why that person's gender identity matters here? Trans people can make insensitive and derogatory remarks the same way non-trans people can. I don't really care about the minutia of what yaoi may or may not mean. That's not the point. The point of the statement was that gay people do not exist to simply be fetisized by other people; Gay, straight, trans, etc.
Nope, no confusion here. It seems like you're the one who misunderstood, me and yourself.
We need a straight long hairstyle without a headband and no bangs. A curly medium length hairstyle would be good though. And a man bun hairstyle.
Honestly, when I look at that chart in the first post, I really only see "Natural hair with an undercut" "strait hair with an undercut, bushed back" "Wavy hair with an undercut." "straight hair with an undercut, brushed to the side." and two or three others that actually look different to me.
But I alternate between three or four variations of "Short ponytail with a single bang" so who am I to judge. More hairstyles for those who want them.
Though I still wouldn't mind an actually long, as in shoulderblade length hairstyle that I actually like for my alt.
My point is that even if they committed to releasing a "men's style" and "women's style" every patch, it's unrealistic to think that they'd release only the sort of styles from your list, patch after patch, when a lot of them are not that different to each other (or, from memory, to some styles already available).
They might boil it down to a number of distinct styles, but they're not going to implement that many similar ones and nothing else, and in any case people put a wider variety of hairstyles on their male characters than that. (Personally I am waiting for a long, plain hairstyle that isn't dead straight and isn't the lank one with the inbuilt headband and a weird shape that makes my Miqo'te's head look like he's lost an inch or two off the back of his skull.)
I think they've exhausted the neck-length-ish hair-in-the-eyes styles, but we still need more variety on both sides of that, not just short styles. Getting new styles should be about filling gaps in the overall range of what is available.
I honestly came in to understand what people are asking for when they repeat that there have been "no masculine hairstyles since [a patch much longer ago than the last style I would personally consider masculine]" and if your example board is all there is to be suggested, then the problem is that you are after a very narrow style that already has some examples available in-game.
So there's nothing wrong with requesting some more hairstyles in the style you're listing, and I think some do fill current gaps - but they're not going to implement so many varieties of it at the cost of other styles, even if they made more effort to give plainer hairstyles and less with the braids and bows that block them off as "feminine".
I think you may have taken it too literally, I saw that pic more as a few examples and variations they could play with, not a Bingo card asking for specifically those to be added, and even then, it's not like we didn't already had like 5 hairstyles that look like 2B's yet having her 'actual' hair made the difference.
All the "short hair" got really repetitive this expantion. It's all the same length, same type. Using contest hair is great but ppl won't always create a selection with a lot of variety, sometimes the sames things keep coming back.
I found this in an old reddit thread (contest hair, sry for poor quality) : https://imgur.com/msRCFgn found it there : https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comme...n_at_14h_live/
It's close to something that male players here like. No shade but still better than spamming another anime young boy hair.
There's many ways in which short hairstyles can be made to look different to one another - and given that there's a lack of them at the moment, we're not really at risk of running out of designs for them anytime soon.
Especially since we only get one or two new hairstyles every five months, generally - which is roughly the same amount of time as a new content patch going live including the second 'half' of each patch generally launching a month after the first.
All i hope for is that while they release more masculine hairstyles for us, they also come out with longer ones that don’t look inherently feminine. I think literally almost every longer option available to us right now had something inherently feminine about it(the long wavy hair with the buns on top come to mind lol).
If the examples are not showing me the full scope of what's being asked for, then that is a problem of the examples – and it will not be conveying the request properly to anyone official who sees it, either.
And I don't think 2B's hair is relevant to this because it's a specific cosplay design. Of course her actual hairstyle is going to be better than an approximation, and they had to add it to the game for the NPC anyway.
I agree that they hairstyles cater mostly to feminine styles. Even the so called "unisex" are really just too feminine. It's so exasperating every time a new hairstyle is released. I don't hope for anything or more these days in this category. I still don't even understand why those who play female character continue to demand long hairstyles that have the physics of a flying surfboard.
Regardless, in my personal opinion I see way too many of those hairstyles irl to even relatively think they belong in a fantasy game, save for the bottom left(which I think is a good mix of fantasy and contemporary), the spikey straight/dred, curl styles.
Fantasy went out the window a long time ago with the motorcycle, car, Nier raid and many other additions to the game. Having modern hairstyles added isn't going to degrade the fantasy feel of this game more than already has been.
I am tired of using this same hairstyle I have been, the-fade-but-not-a-fade hairstyle, on Allison right now, my alt Rupert, on one of Allison's retainers, on both of Rupert's retainers, on 1 of Brandon's retainers (my 2nd alt) and on one of Dario's retainers (my 3rd alt) because that hairstyle is the only short hairstyle that even remotely looks like a fade yet I'm stuck with the god awful braids tacked on to the right side. I would take nearly ANY of the hairstyles in that pic because they're proper fades and proper undercuts but knowing the devs they'll probably add arbitrary braids to it.
For you, maybe. For me, there's a reason why I go play ESO, if at bare minimum to remember that some fantasy worlds understand constraints.
All I mean is that if we get short, masculine styles, then at the very least let them have some hint of final fantasy to them that doesn't look like a guy I'd see walking out of Starbucks.
At this point, I'd be glad even if we get a simple short hair like FFXII Gabranth, FFXII Cid, FFXV Cor, or FFXV Titus.
I must apologise, when I'd added the moodboard edit to the OP, I'd posted a message saying "this is what I'd personally like to see." It's a biased subsample, which wasn't reflected in the OP Edit comment.
Nevertheless, my simple request for short, masculine hair shouldn't have to be bolstered with a reference gallery detailing the entire breadth of possible masculine hairstyles. I'm certain the lead art team are more than capable on that front. I don't feel that onus should lie on me in order for my request to become valid for you or staff.
Great how this thread got bombed thanks to troll. Ativan get a life, stop lurking in the forums all day like a caveman.
I hate how we only have that one oversized pompadour for a pompadour hairstyle. I'd love it if we could get a normal sized one.

I need this for Josuke and Yakuza cosplay purposes!!!!
Ya'll are getting hair? /s
If anything, with the contest hairs finally being over we can close that nightmare chapter of hairstyle history and get some unique pieces. I would actually use a fade on my alt. You know, if bunnies could use hair.
I'm also hoping that we get more facial hair options for male characters - especially the stubble used by the Warrior of Darkness in promotional screenshots and in-game footage. Granted, recent commentary on that in interviews has been a bit more optimistic so I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll be getting it at some point.
That aside, I think the examples given by the original poster covered a broad range of potential options for short, masculine hairstyles that could be added to the game.
