Yeah there seems to be this dillusion by some players that everyone subscribed to the game wants to zerg through all new patch content in one day so they can spend the rest of the time afking around town and crying on forums about lack of content.
this attitude isnt new though.It existed since 2.0 when the WOW players migrated to the game.They rushed to level 50 as fast as possible.skipping all story cutscenes and ignoring side quests and then bashed SE for lack of game content.

So first of all i actually find it >disgusting< that you are implying ALL the players want it the way you want it in your main post. Only TL;DR'd a bit through the rest of the thread. In general, people are right. It's not the greatest thing but there is nothing bad with staggering content a bit. Ok, Eurekas endless delays made it become a complete piece of dirt and Pagos was just "oof"(but they already admitted that they never expected so many people to do eureka and that they had not enough time to adjust Pagos in the beginning), but i still enjoy it as of now(i'ts just literally useless to actually use the weapons, except you get an insane good stat roll in Pyros).
Keep in mind pls that Final Fantasy always was and still is a heavy story-dependend game and at least for me it is absolutely understandable that they want players to enjoy the Story first.

APART FROM ALL THAT, you will STILL get Seiryu, 24 Man Raid, the new dungeon(ok, tied to MSQ but still), the 2 new things for Gold Saucer and the new custom delivery plus tons of quality of live updates RIGHT WHEN 4.5 DROPS. There is literally >no< other game on the market right now that get's updated so frequently and with so much content as FFXIV does.

To summarize/TL;DR: Staggering content is fine, as long as it doesn't go too far(hello eureka). FFXIV is one of the most frequently updated MMOs out there and the sheer amount of content is insane as it is. Crybabies gonna cry, fangrils gonna fangirl. But you gotta face it how it is.

I will be enjoying the msq story. I'm happy with that.

I wouldnt call 2 hours of story, 1 dungeon, 1 trial and 1 raid "much"

everything can be done within 4-5 hours and thats it for the entire week... lol

I wish they would release way more stuff at once, its already boring as hell

Yes, because having the playerbase wait six weeks (4.3) for content is totes a better solution. This whole notion of overwhelming the playerbase is laughably absurd. Let's call it what it actually is: a blatant attempt to keep people subbed when they don't have a lot of content.

If for no other reason then to prevent being spoiled on stuff. Some people actually care about being spoiled, while many people won't keep their spoilers to themselves. Seeing as there is no real drawback to doing it...yeah.

If they didn't reveal this content earlier you wouldn't complain. If they'd reveal Blue Mage right after 4.50 saying that it will be released a week later you'd be praising them for releasing new content so often. It's all a matter of perception.

Clearly you have not considered the actual implications. You're just looking at the single instance, in a void, and making claims based on incorrect information.

Let's say that we have several pieces of content released over half a year, as such:
1) Main story worth 3h in 1st month, January.
2) Raid worth 3h in 2nd month.
3) Primal (+Extreme) worth a total of 2h in 3rd month.
4) Main story worth 3h in 4th month.
5) Some new content worth 4h in 5th month.
6) Two dungeons worth a total of 2h in sixth month, June.

That gives a total of 17h worth of content. Do note that the numbers here are NOT relevant, so don't bother responding with "What kinda dungeon can take 1h to finish" and such. That's not the point.

With that "staggered" release, the wait time between each content is below one month (one month minus few hours of the content being done). The least is 669h in February, the most is 742h in March. That's a total of 4327h of wait time within the six months (for the July content).

Now, we'll have a batch release of everything. What happens?!
You end up having 17 hours of playtime. Then you have to wait...4327h until July release.

The amount of wait or play time does not change. Practically speaking, you get the same amount of stuff worth the same amount of time spent. You also have to wait for the same length of time between the release in January and the release in July. However, having to wait ~710h between new content releases several times is, for typical human, far less of a problem than waiting for 4327h.

If you care about money (don't want to be subscribed) and all you care about is the new content, there is zero reason for you to be subscribed between January and July. Just stop playing before then and resubscribe at end of June, rush through the content that's fully released then...yeah...Unsubscribe again waiting for the next several months worth of content. The difference between that and you getting a batch content "up front"?!...Everyone else will have already done that content by the time you start playing it. A slightly more "advanced" version of a batch "up front" release where many people would have finished most of the content before you start doing it, because they would have chosen a different order than you.

If all you're complaining about is the additional wait time...then you simply never bothered to do the math, because there's literally zero additional wait time.

They probably didn't think it would be a huge deal to split it up. They've done it with Ultimate. Perhaps they want to guarantee dungeon/24 man queues in the first week and give people time to spam some weapons/mounts out of the EX primal before everyone switches to BLU and starts to burn everything to the ground.

There's also a competitor patch launching around the same time as 4.5 which was only announced a couple days ago and a competitor raid 1-2 weeks after BLU around the end of January. I'm sure they are keeping track of this since Yoshi says a lot of people only spend 1-2 months on a patch then go play something else.

If you're that concerned with the possibility of being spoiled, then do the MSQ first. Even with their staggered release schedule of late, the MSQ always comes first. If they fronted loaded everything else, people more invested in the story could simply elect to do that first.

That being said, unless you go out of your way to find spoilers. They're generally easy enough to avoid. I still haven't done 4.4 yet frequent both here and reddit yet haven't been spoiled on the MSQ.

It has nothing to do with the wait time. I simply dislike bit sized content releases. When newer things come out, I want to jump into it yet because of these staggered releases by the time I'm hyped up... there's nothing left. I am far from the only one who dislikes this change either as it has been a frequent complaint—even being brought up in one of their Q&A if I recall. There was zero reason to delay HoH six weeks like they did. It makes each patch feel increasingly more hollow, and in my opinion at least, really puts an emphasises on how stale their formulaic structure has become. This is especially true for the .5 patches, which used to be much larger. Now we have a bunch of little patches instead of a main patch and an additional one.

What it boils down to is trying to keep people subbed longer. I get it from a business perspective. It doesn't mean I like or agree with it.

I appreciate the staggering actually. I was considering taking off work to knock everything out but with blu pushed back a week that's enough where I don't feel compelled to bother.

First, I don't care about spoilers. In fact I often check whether this or that character dies in a movie or a game before trying it, and if they do, I tend to not touch it. Not because I was spoiled but because most deaths in media are shoehorned for easy drama and I just don't enjoy that. Final Fantasy VII was the cause of this habit being made, in fact.

That being said, I realize that I'm not the center of the world and that there are people that do care about being spoiled. But if me or others aren't actually hurt by it...why not give some leeway to those that care?!


Also, there's a MAJOR issue with what you said. Everything except PvP is a story. You can spoil the raid, you can spoil the Blue Mage story, you can spoil the Trials, you can spoil the side quests etc. If EVERYTHING can be spoiled, you're basically gambling on what to pick, hoping that people will focus on spoiling that piece of content instead of the rest.

Again, the problem is that it's not always the case. People can be spoiled individually in game. Especially really social people...You know, the ones that many others claim MMO's to be for. There are many people that in discussion after doing something they find exciting will just spill the beans.

Sorry, but here I can only suggest not hyping yourself up. As I said, it's a matter of presentation. If they never revealed all that extra content until it was next in line, you would never "hype yourself up". In that manner I agree that they are choosing a rather irksome marketing plan. Stuff shouldn't be revealed until it's next in line. Not third or fourth in line. Expansions, being the large chunks of paid content they are can be exceptions to it...but individual patches should not.

Many people complaining about it are the sort that want to burn through the content and then unsubscribe, but are too impatient to do so "at the end" rather than the "beginning". Others are like the original poster, they see a shiny and they want it now. They wouldn't see a difference if they never saw that shiny in the first place.

Of course. The problem I have is with incorrect arguments though. Your post is literally the first in this thread that I can think of that gave an actually valid argument that is not just a matter of psychological conditioning that is always present (regardless of how they would be released). The argument about the bite-sized patches ending up just as the hype is building up. But hey, that too is known as a cliffhanger and is actually used throughout all fiction with more than one release per story.

All other arguments up till now were boiling down to either impatience or the humans natural habit of wanting the shiny stuff they see in front of them.


Some people don't like staggering releases?! Sure, I'm not telling you to like them. But they should at least be upfront with it and say that they're too impatient and they want everything that's revealed at once, not try to argue that the staggering release plan itself is some sort of problem, bad or whatever.

I don't mind a week delay, especially in a patch that has this much content in the first week. MSQ and 24-man cutscenes are going to take a long time.

That said, I don't think I would have minded if BLU were released at the same time. I might not have gotten to leveling it until a week later, and in the mean time other people will have already grinded to 50, but who cares? Other people leveling the job before me doesn't effect me, and even if I probably wouldn't get to BLU for a week anyway, there's nothing wrong with having the option to do it immediately.

Also, while I don't mind the 1 week stagger, they delayed some content by 2 weeks once, and that was god awful.

Then prioritize the content you're more invested in. This wasn't an issue throughout Heavensward. At least one not vocalized. In fact, there have been more complaints about the staggered release schedule than there ever were about potential spoilers. That being said, they can still split some things up. Blue Mage being a week late isn't a huge deal by any means, however when this becomes a consistent trend with content like HoH, Eureka and etc. It gets more than a little annoying. Ironically, both have stories that were widely panned.

That is terrible advice. Don't hype yourself up for the content because it'll be over with in less than five hours. Wow. Talk about building excitement for a new patch. It isn't a matter of people just wanting to devour everything immediately and unsub. I haven't unsubbed once in almost four years now yet I still dislike the staggered releases they've started doing for the reasons mentioned: I don't like bit-sized pieces nor do I like just sitting on new content until it builds enough of a backlog so I have more to do. I'll agree the fact they hype it in the Live Letters only adds to the annoyances since it feels like half the patch is missing—which, technically, it is. Put simply, I don't see an reason they couldn't go back to the Heavensward system. Let Eureak and whatever else stay in the .5 patches while the bulk is released in 4.5 proper. If some tweaks or whatnot causes a week delay. That happens. But the delays have mostly been intentional.

Of all the MMO's I've played FFXIV has the most constant and usually largest content updates

Staggering them out also staggers out all the glitches and bug reports and criticisms and all that so the devs actually get focused feedback they can work on more easily and quickly

Yeah. WoW used to dish out a good bit every patch, but over the years they've settled with less and less per patch. Legion was the exception because there was almost too much to do. BfA sorta makes me feel like Blizzard's skimping on their product. I know they're not doing so hot otherwise. FF XIV at least gets updated regularly. Whether people enjoy the content or not may be another story (looking at you, Eureka) but...in the end I've got more to do daily than I have with WoW for awhile.

I played about the exact same thing for 2 years in SWTOR back in like.. 2015-2017ish. One New update a year or so, if I remember correctly. Cash shop was regularly updated though..

Ignoring the persons that clearly only nit pick words and ignore the topic such as Bonbori.

A lot of statements that some of you are presenting is that the development team is staggering content to work out bugs, if any, as well as releasing the content make it better per se.

However, the issue remains that they are not creating a new patch to do these things. They are taking patch 4.5 and breaking it down in to 4.5a, 4.5b, 4.5c...etc, If blue mage was intended to be added in to patch 4.6 , for example, then there would be no complaint or issue from me as a player because now I know when to expect that content.

If for example the development team announces Blitzball as a gold saucer event for 5.0 but we do not actually get access to that piece of content until 5.1, for no other reason than "we dont want to burden you're time from doing the MSQ" . Then wouldn't you as a player, as a customer, feel cheated in any way?

The issue remains that staggering this content, seemingly last minute, without player approval or even input as if we want this particular content to be staggered is evidence of a
very disconnected development team and producer that have lost touch with part of their player base, and customers.

I do not wish to have content going forward into future patches staggered, especially battle-driven or focused content such as new jobs, raids(besides during expansion launches), or "unique battle systems(eureka, palace of the dead, heaven on high)". This type of content is the core of the game, and while it is optional other content such as Main scenario while mandatory would actually benefit from staggered release.

I personally feel parts of the MSQ should be staggered to make each MSQ event more poignant rather than being able to blow through that particular content. This can diminish the value of what you are doing story wise , lore wise if you can go through the Stormblood campaign and liberate two nations in a matter of days if not hours.

The concept of bite-sized content releases has impacts beyond just “how soon will it be available and/or consumed?” These micro-patches are enjoyed by some people because they bring some order and structure to the patch cycles and make sure you’re not overwhelmed by too much at once. I take the alternate view and just replace “overwhelmed” with “immersed.”

In terms of the player experience, I’ve always been fond of the classic EverQuest model, which I think was perfect at the time Shadows of Luclin launched. This expansion gave you an entire celestial body (the moon Luclin) to explore at your own pace and in your own way. Yes, it was entirely possible that early on you would go down a route that didn’t have the “best loot” or “best XP” or whatever. You might wander into monsters that were too hard for you or through an area that had environmental effects you weren’t prepared for. You probably even died by taking a wrong turn. But in all of that, you were *exploring*. How did you know you found a raid zone? The monsters tore your face off and you knew to bring friends next time.

Contrast that with “A new 8-person raid for level 70 characters has been located at (X,Y) in ZoneName” in the patch notes.

From a utilitarian point of view where time spent wandering is wasted and deaths are frustrating annoyances, the FFXIV route has more appeal. For a Bartle Explorer-Type player, funneling the players down a narrow hallway (haha unintentional FF13 joke) of content just means we’re being deprived of a huge chunk of what makes a virtual world exciting.

One way gives individuals the option of what they want to do first and the pace at which they want to do it. The other takes that freedom away by throttling options in a way that is nannying and patronizing (go at this speed and not that one; this is what you should do, not that).

It's both amusing and sad to see so many people twisting themselves into logical knots as they try to argue that less options for players is a better system for everyone, typically because such a system conforms to their own personal preferences. It demonstrates a lack of empathy and a paucity of analytical thinking.

I love having the choices of what content to tackle first and how fast I get to take them on taken away from me. What's the point of a giant numbered patch anymore? They're not exciting anymore because everything they could bring is instead staggered across the minor patches afterward.

I support this.

Wasn't the original reasoning behind the first Savage raid being held back being that the devs wanted to give players some time to get through the entirety of the 4.0 MSQ without feeling like they needed to rush, whereas from 4.2 onwards, only had 8-9 story quests for players already at level 70?

And that is fair reasoning. I don't raid myself anymore, but I would hate to be rushed to the level cap because of raiding. Leveling in a new expansion is the single best part of any MMO. So many new things, so much mystery. That gets lost really quick after the level cap is reached. I try to make that leveling last me awhile.

Yes please... I really quite sick of getting to patch day, realising none of the stuff that I want to actively do is here yet, finishing what is there in a couple of days, then just going back to the usual cycle while I wait weeks/months for the content I actually want to do to finally be released... Major patches just aren't exciting for me anymore, because the meat of them is almost always staggered for later release... All this fanfare for a couple of new instances I'll do once a week while waiting for the real content to get added, fun...

Heck, an alternative could be to include more adjustments to other content in the major patches... The additions to Lost Canals was welcome, for example, as are the additions to Gold Saucer... Similar adjustments of that level, to things like Eureka or Deep Dungeons would be great. Right now, if we get anything, it's relatively minor background adjustments... If with major patches you were adding new mechanics and new rewards to content like that? That's a reason to be excited for such content again. The adjustments to Eureka have actually been kind of pathetic in that regard... I get the idea behind letting us buy Pazuzu feathers, but... Those NMs were some of the only interesting ones... Giving people an excuse to never pop them again just makes Eureka worse, not better...

that's not really what our sub is paying for. SE will release content at w/e interval they want regardless of our subs. Our subs are only paying for ACCESS to FFxiv's servers, we don't "own" FFxiv like we do a standalone game (and most companies will fight that you still dont own a game even though you bought it).

Wasn't the original reasoning behind the first Savage raid being held back being that the devs wanted to give players some time to get through the entirety of the 4.0 MSQ without feeling like they needed to rush, whereas from 4.2 onwards, only had 8-9 story quests for players already at level 70?

Yes, but when the second two released you had to rush through the story raid and then move onto savage.

Why this is bad is not everyone does story mode with a static and some of us have absolutely garbage RNG. On top of this .... which is the supposed whole idea for SE doing this in the first place is I felt forced to rush the story raid to not fall “behind.” Which in my opinion you can *only* fall behind in raid. I don’t feel its possible to fall behind on BLU or Dungeons, or anything else really. So why stagger blue Mage? How would you fall behind? There isn’t a weekly lock out for BLU. Or is there????

What? I didnt know ANYONE who did the story mode with a static. Everyone i know cleared the story quests and jumped straight into savage and never did the normal versions again. I'm not really sure where anyone is falling behind here.

as far as BLU is concerned, Im pretty sure Yoshi said its being staggered so everyone can do the MSQ's w/o being rushed. He hinted pretty heavily there's going to be a lot to do. It has nothing to do with BLU's content, as far I'm aware.

Umm. Did you not understand what I said at all? Because you essentially just agreed with me 100% except you then said people don’t want to feel rushed to do the story. Which... BLU isn’t tied to the story. So how will we be rushed.

And back to the other topic. You literally just said everyone rushed to do story mode to jump into savage. Which is exactly my point. I felt rushed to do story mode to not fall behind on savage. So if *any* content should be staggered, it should be story mode and savage mode of raids. Not BLU “to do story” that it’s not even tied to....

And BLU Is the one getting delayed while savage isn’t....... makes *zero* sense to me.

Idk about you or other human beings, but i can typically only do 1 thing at a time. Sure, you dont NEED to do the story before doing BLU content, but thats not the point. They want you to focus on the story w/o being tempted to do the BLU content instead. Less distraction = more focus.*

I think the issues separate from each other because we're talking about Raid story and Main story. EVERYONE goes through the MSQ but I doubt the same level of attention is required to enjoy any of the raid stories, so delaying Savage raiders a full week to focus on some side story does not really make sense to me.

and personally, i still dont understand the "falling behind on savage". I never felt rushed in the normal raids, I cleared them all in PUGs on day one of the patch in maybe 1-3 hours, iirc. is that lucky RNG? because thats a big oof if so.

Why though? Why does it matter what order we do stuff in or when we even do it? Why does SE need us to focus on the MSQ?

Honestly, the whole concept is bizarre to me, especially after 4.0 and good old Raubahn Extreme... Funnelling players down a single bottleneck doesn't usually end all that well, you'd think it'd be something they aim to avoid, rather than encourage...

SE's view on this is to keep people from being overwhelmed usually. Imo it doesn't really matter. People should be able to do what they want in the first week content wise. That said a week's wait for BLU isn't a big deal at all. The wait time between Eureka installments is actually kinda horrible though. The relic has basically been irrelevant in SB.

HW relics got a late start but they caught up eventually. Much sooner than SB relics have...and they aren't even there yet. lol

Unlike Stormblood the Anima Relic grind was more bearable due to its connection to content that you were currently running making it that much more passive in nature. You could brute force it and get it in the first week as many did for each step but it wasn't something that was completely walled off into itself like Eureka is. It didn't interrupt anyone's playstyle and helped increase the shelf life of past content making things feel like there was a tad more to do even if it was marginal at best. On top of that you also had the fact that during Heavensward era the Relic itself was a viable alternative to the Tomestone and Raid weapon even on iLvl alone, though it did have a later start. The current Relic has always been outdated serving as nothing more than a glamstick given how late the releases of each step was, a point where a good majority of the playerbase who didn't stop after Week 1/2 of a patch to already be heavily outgeared. I'll respect your choice to grind for an underwhelming glam stick but the Relic in this expansion has been atrocious with a grind:reward ratio that is so out of wack that it has become the perfect representation of what this expansion is: Dragged Out and Underwhelming

As for the thinning of content I will have to agree that this expansion has been egregious with it and hopefully it'll come to a stop come ShadowBringers. I never understood the "It's to not overwhelm the player on Patch day" when you consider that most of the patches from Heavensward and Stormblood are so tiny in comparison to most if not all of the 2.X patches, which released a good chunk on the first day. We are slowly getting trained to accept this as a fact in which I assume is a way of giving an illusion that we're still getting a lot of content which we're not. As for the content count we're essentially reliving Heavensward 2.0 with a "Asian" reskin only this time the content is dragged out, Eureka outdid Diadem in bad and the dungeons we lost became Ultimate. (Though Ultimate is pretty good). We haven't added upon anything and content is dying at a faster pace cause of the Relic's situation. Still let me be a bit fair in that regard, were it not for Heavensward coming out first and setting in stone the current formula Stormblood would have probably been way more acceptable to the playerbase but like it is now anything following it that didn't show any inkling of change for the better and instead for the worst, which Stormblood did do compared once again to HW, then that new expansion would have been lambasted for being bad. All I can hope for ShadowBringers is for Heavensward/Stormblood polish on content with ARR's quantity.
